Patrick Chardronnet - Dropout
Already a mainstay in the scene with admired releases on brother label Poker Flat, and of course Connaisseur, Patrick Chardronnet returns with a wonderful 2 track EP on Audiomatique. A delightfully trippy, post-minimal adventure, ‚Piper‘ raises the brow for Chardronnet, dropping the big room synths this time in favour of a very organic, low-slung addictive groove. Sparse, tricky percussion underpins the headsdown late night vibe, as a drifting ensemble of mystic vocals and haunting horns unfolds over 11 minutes. Enchanting, mesmeric and deeply spaced, this reduced-percussive foray explores Chardronnet‘s more hypnotic side... a priceless cut of of hybrid house from a modern master. On the B side the driving, textural chimes of ‚Dropout‘ ensnare the listener into another beautiful and mysterious world. Solid-state, bass-led percussion and crisply-cut percussive fx remain subdued whilst an epic, swirling synth landscape weaves its dreamy tale. Suggesting moments of real drama, yet all the while maintaining an addictive, slow burning vibe, its a an amazing journey into this producer‘s remarkable, inimitable sonic world.

For almost as long as there have been DJs, there have been DJ tools: Bonus beats, acapellas and ambient overlays have long been the stock in trade of selectors interested in more than simple crossfades from outro to intro. But back at the beginning of 2007, Luciano put a new twist on a triedand- true idea with No Model No Tool. The inaugural release on Cadenza Split Composition, a sublabel of the iconic Swiss imprint, No Model No Tool revitalized the recombinant concept, offering DJs a selection of readymade miniatures that worked like sonic building blocks—oddly-shaped bits and pieces designed to be stacked and shuffled to the DJ's delight. In retrospect, it was a prescient move: the past few years have seen a resurgence of interest in layering, looping and Lego-like play, thanks to the rise of CDJs, Ableton and Traktor/Serato Scratch. And now, at long last, Cadenza Split Composition returns with another grab-bag of toys and tools designed to inspire. CSC02 showcases the architectural talents of Alexkid, a veteran of the French electronic scene and staple of Laurent Garnier's F Communications label, who delivers a set of origami blueprints that practically beg DJs to get their hands dirty. The A- and B-sides serve as the twin foundations: Both "El Cinco" and "Mocco" offer loose and lanky rhythms, rich with crystalline details and crusted with dubby delay. The chugging "El Cinco" might remind you of Wolfgang Voigt's classic studio 1 project, while "Mocco" follows a corkscrewing groove through a psychoacoustic hall of mirrors, all face-melting harmonics and throbbing oscillators. Both cuts more than hold their own as standalone tracks, in fact, but the second vinyl offers ample opportunities for more mischievous mixes. On side C, "Instrulentro," "Lampara" and "Fosforo" are oozy, woozy drones, reminiscent of a seasick Subotnick, while "Sheiker" coaxes supple, unquantized rhythms from a disintegrating gourd. Side D, meanwhile, pops the top on a bottle full of spirits, unleashing eerie whistles, Banshee sighs and lilting female vocals. Recalling the Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) of early 20th century ghost recordings, they turn these easygoing grooves into something approaching haunted house.

Some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. And so did Yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. His new release for Desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt Benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of Balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a Commodore64 high score melody. Raised in Turin, Italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for Yassin Legali, also known as Yaya, from an early age. His father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for M'Bamina, a band consisting of musicians from Benin, Zaire, Italy and Cameroon. M'Bamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like Manu Dibango and Salif Keita, were sponsored by Paco Rabanne and played all over Africa, including a show for the presidents of Senegal and France. Their final show was with James Brown in Paris in 1985 - the year Yaya was born. Well-versed in his father's legacy, Yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in Turin clubs. Just one year later, he was already DJing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. Manu Dibango and Fela Kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by Masters at Work and Dimitri from Paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

Per Martinsen aka Mental Overdrive shouldn't need any introduction being the granddad of the norwegian electronic music scene and all...Hidden away in a little snowcave near the polar circle he's currently preparing the bits that eventually will become his debut album for Full Pupp. We've heard some bits and though we'd like to keep them all under the lid for a little while longer, here's a little sneak peek of what he's done and hopefully preparing you off his unique take on modern dance music taking in elements of new wave, new beat, detroit and dubstep on the way. Per unleashed this on us at one of the Full Pupp nights in Oslo and recently we saw how it took the roof off at Fabric... For the b-side we paired Per up with the equally Detroit-loving Blackbelt Andersen which gives us a hi-speed samba techno work out with a unhealthy deep bass. Seriously, just because we can't write proper release sheets doesn't mean the music's not good...

Loop Hotel, - Room 101
2
Loop Hotel, - Room 102
Come and spend a night at the brand new Loop Hotel...! Its a one-ofa-kind international spot where quality, infectious house and techhouse music is piped into every room. So exclusive that its visitors wish to remain anonymous, we are left only to imagine who might be behind the project - yet its clear the calibre of the producer involved is very high indeed! Based on the concept of a two track partnership, a solid state jacking groove is introduced, building up a musical statement with a combination of rich analogue equipment to create the vibe. The partner track then, removes all the previously explored musical elements, keeping the beats intact, and builds a new track again from the foundations up. Room 101 is a tooly, playful house jam, whose strong opening beats provide the basis for a stylish array of synth themes, classic house organs and tweaked out acidic stabs to unfold. Keeping the beats then, of course, Room 102 takes things down a darker route, with a more reduced family of elements describing a heady, even more acidic late night moment. Each track complements its brother remarkably well, and becomes engaging to hear how the emotions, flow and vibe are changed, while maintaining
the same functional percussive elements in both tracks. Watch out for this new series of releases, that explores the endless possibilities of hidden grooves locked inside the mind of their producer... ready to be expressed on vinyl! Welcome to Loop Hotel.

After collaborations from Berliners Jaxson & David Keno and Londoners Glimpse & Alex Jones, Kindisch heads to the Southern hub of Germany's House source: Frankfurt. This time reaping the harvest from the joined forces of Level Non Zero label owner Chris Wood and the main man behind one of the most infamous record stores in the world, Meat. Both have released acclaimed records on labels such as Get Physical, Below and Level Non Zero. 'Le Beat N'est Pas Triste' is a straight up sweat on the walls filthy Tech-House number. Off kilter snares, crowd risings chants and pleasantly distorted vocals that sound like they came out of a 80's horror science fiction film, squeeze every drop of energy out of the sound system. This is one of those tracks you wish you could hear when running from ruthless gangsters through a run down industrial city. We at Kindisch love grimy, thick and choppy percussion, in fact - the heavier the better. 'Le Yack Noir' is just that: a percussive workout combined with some drum machine claps all riding a wave of rising sub bass. Although that could be enough to keep this tune going, the boys are not satisfied and decide to snaz it up by tossing in some actual Yak mating calls, squeaks, diced and pitched vocals. Just don't play this one too loud in the wilderness. Rounding it out is a little comedown from the sonic high that the first two tunes have induced. 'Outil' utilizes a more bouncy old-school House bass line that sits comfortably along side the disco claps and filtered organ stabs. Chris and Meat's studio skills and deep understanding of electronic music seem like a match made in heaven. That is if your heaven is Saturday night at 3AM. If so, then you better make sure you have this record on you when the man upstairs dial's your number.

Stefan Goldmann delivers a ground breaking edit of a classic: A minimalistic cut up on the edges of perception celebrates one of the most thrilling works in music - Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre Du Printemps! Staying 100% true to the original score, he moves through over a dozen classic recordings of the work in 146 individually treated segments. Nothing has been left out, nothing has been added. Still everything totally changes every few seconds. Probably the most radical approach to editing & electrifying classical music ever.
These are some of the most revolutionary notes in the whole history of music. Written in 1913, Le Sacre Du Printemps redefined what music could be, much as Beethoven's Eroica had done a century before. While it's debut performance caused massive riots, it has become one of the most celebrated works of music ever since. It has been performed and recorded by basically every reknown conductor and orchestra in the world and is one of the most often played orchestral works of all times.
Stefan Goldmann's edit is as radically innovative: nothing has been left out, nothing has been added. Staying 100% true to the score, he blends through dozens of recordings of Sacre in 146 individually treated segments - without ever messing with Stravinsky's intentions. Every few seconds the listener encounters a different performance, room and recording set up. A minimalistic journey into the depths of interpretation and concert hall acoustics, microphone positioning and mixdown decisions. A silent and masterful celebration of an original. This disc also features a "classic" live recording of Sacre by Pierre Monteux.

Born out of long, hot sessions in the their Ibiza studio last summer, 10% is a techno roller. Built around a killer groove, open hats, and dramatic synths. 20% takes a whole different route. Tough house beats lead the way, backed by wonderful old skool samples, and the occasional warped horn section. Awesome stuff, and a truly wonderful release.

Opener ’Dance With Me’ is a main room beast of a track. Full of drama, atmospheric delight, and spooky wonderment. It builds from the opening bars, layer upon layer of trippy melody and raging synths, before stripping back to the melody at the break. Then things really intensify, stepping up yet another gear before dropping from a great height into ’that’ riff...On the flip label boss Wink steps up to give his take on ’Sleep With Me’. Powerful drums and synth line open the show. Followed by keys, like armour piercing diamond droplets, which lead us from the dark into bass-heavy light.

You know, it is most important to get into the flow… When styles have fallen into oblivion, when dance is subliminal, when positions never mind, when discussions have faded, when every substance has been dropped, when everyone is free of inert mass, when the set-up is cleared of significance, then mindset and music will be automatically starting to float freely. The journey of the most successful explorer, the commander of floating ship starts from a pool full of nutritionally dense ideas, a primordial soup filling a feel tank – as opposed to a think tank. Moves that make a jam session – that's how to begin with when entering and establishing new playgrounds, designing organic technologies, expanding universes. There's enough space to place countless seeds of sense, causing the jointly communication between the players of the jam to flower out. The players of these jams are the many spirits of Ricardo Villalobos. His philosophy of the flow of absolute sound is in full evolution here. Following the last two vinyl releases (PERL69-1 & PERL69-2) featuring "Minimoonstar", "Electonic Water" & "Amazordum" plus remixes on the b-sides by Shackleton, San Proper & Baby Ford, the CD contains the full session mix of Minimoonstar (32 minutes!) as well as a cd exclusive bonustrack entitled "Skinfummel".

Poker Flat proudly presents “Collaboratory”, Steve Bug’s fourth artist album! Based strongly on the ideas of collaboration, shared ideas, mutual respect for fellow artists and the strength of combining forces in the studio, Steve chose some very special producers and vocalists to work with on this exciting project. From Berlin natives and well known high-climbers Cassy and Clé (of Märtini Brös), to one half of the Detroit Grand Pubahs aka Paris The Black Fu, ace producers and equally dextrous vocalists are assured. The Southern Hemisphere‘s hottest new export Simon Flower features with Bug on their new teasing cut ‚Passing Clouds‘, while
Minimise boss and techno legend Donnacha Costello also went head to head with the Poker Flat maestro in the studio. Thats not to forget the stunning full-length vocals of Brazilian talent Virginia Nascimento on the slow-spun ‚Trust In Me‘, and the classic Chi-Town cut ‚Like It Should Be‘, on which Helsinki‘s Gigi makes a magical rare appearance, sharing her inspiring and heart-felt message. While the snappier moments of the album willl work dancefloors into a frenzy, the whole album
breathes an analogue warmth, which is hard to find these days and which underlines the organic character of a fantastic, song-based listening album.

A short introduction
16 Billion Drum Kicks is the new major Sino outing introducing Brazil's top electronic music producer, Renato Cohen. It delivers here a cleverly produced fusion of tribal-esque grooves, Samba Jazz and Funk amalgamated onto its firm foundation of its dancefloor Techno roots. With the help of legendary guest artists such as 70's Brazilian Samba Rock Marku Ribas, Sao Paolo's Samba virtuoso Bocato and Techno hero Technasia, amongst others, Renato conveys a combination of sonic subtleties and frenetic nuances that takes the listener through a myriad of emotions. A first fresh album sure to build on you, it is both a gem to listen in a relaxed state of mind as well when engaged in lightning pace. It's in 2007, after more than 10 years of production and performances, that Renato felt he finally reached the maturity and level of eclecticism required to work on a bigger scale project. He spent the next two years working on the production of his first album, 16 Billion Drum Kicks. With the mainstream Techno style moving to a minimal, darker and melancholic sound, the album finds an alternative, conveying a global positive mood and dancefloor energy. It is an experiment that combines organic sounds with electronic music and features many Brazilian Jazz and Samba musicians, such as the 60 years-old Samba-Rock legend Marku Ribas on the track Cosmic Man, and the wellrespected trombone player Bocato, in an unexpected Samba-Jazz version of Pontapé. Techno producer and long-lasting friend Technasia also collaborated closely with Renato at the different stages of the production of the album, including mixing and mastering. It's with this project that the two fellas realised they could bring the collaboration to the next level, and came up with the idea of a Live/ DJ performances series entitled Sino Live!, a mix of mashups of their original tracks together with loop and re-edits of well-known Techno classics. The newly formed duo performed during summer 2008 at several festivals, including Monegros (Spain), Electromind (France) and Wire (Japan).

Returning to present the third in Archipel's excursion series is label boss himself, Pheek, and his partner in aural beautification of the world, Stefny, who both bring their passions together to form "Japan Excursion Joint 3". The record begins with Pheek's "Voices in the Fog" which eerily and most definitely very pleasantly does seem to resemble, in the mind's eye, extra-dimensional voices in a superbly thick and warm blanket of fog which rolls and swirls as it crawls through dark pre-dawn evergreen forests, carrying with it the scent of geosmin and fir sap. "So Worried" is a little more delicate but just as enchanting with opalescent melodies weaving their way through gentle layers of rhythm which are ever evolving and forming new patterns which crawl over the entire surface of the mind. On the other side of the same wax coin we find Stefny's piece "Wormhole" which gets right to the point and prepares you for a superheated and electrified journey between interdimensional space as all the colours of memory from your past, present and the deja vu of your endless futures come together and wrap themselves together to form one of an infinite of superbly glowing singularities. Pheek now closes things of with a helping of warm "Chicken Sashimi" which is intensely layered with an array of piquant and very flavorfully rich tastes that collide to form a single and constantly growing, changing, hypertaste, leading to no less than the fullest of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Baby Ford has been making electronic music since the late 1980's and is regarded by most as having been one of the key players in the UK acid house scene. Since then he has steadily released countless numbers of compositions ranging from the chart topping Oochy Koochy and Ford Trax to the blissfull underground walks in space that have recently appeared on labels such as Perlon not to mention the work he has done with fellow collaborators such as Ian 'Eon' Loveday as Minimal Man, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior on his own highly respected Ifach, Trelik & Pal SL imprints.2009 See's the man himself open a Tin Of Worms for London's Autoreply with a classy, versatile 2 track EP that sums up the present & future on the A side + tells a story of what once was on the flip. The title track Tin Of Worms showcases crisp, tight linear drum programming - a ribcage shaking sub base & supernatural sounding synth sounds which build & drop in a question & answer format over its 8 minute cycle displaying the original principles of minimal techno alongside forward thinking sound design. For the flip side we proudly introduce Westway which is original Baby Ford material written on the eve of the millennium, recorded on Ford's now defunkt hardware set up and mastered from DAT. This track conjours images of smoky late night jazz clubs with its smooth intermittent piano chords & strings that seem to float in an out of the mix like the warm breeze on a long summer's evening - set starter, nightclub techno lesson, afterparty showpiece the choice is yours! This EP has been mastered by the legendary Kevin Metcalfe of 'The Soundmasters' who has worked as an engineer at RCA Records, CTS and Townhouse Studios. Kevin mastered Bford 9 and the entire Ifach catalogue not to mention 'Diamond Dogs' by David Bowie as well as countless projects with Lee 'Scratch' Perry & King Tubby.

BACK IN!!
It's a hard task to capture the raw emotional elements of deep electronic techno, and on his Ovum debut, Itamar Sagi has managed to capture and mold it, on this Detroit influenced EP."Fiona", the "A" side track is the leading song on this powerful EP. Pulsating stabs and tracky raw beats commence and quickly set a hypnotic sexy vibe, while the rolling bass-line makes your hips jack from side to side. The simplicity of the rhythm and melodies work magic capturing the ear of any listener or dj. Raw, jacking, deep, and sexy are the best ways to describe this timeless track.
"Agnes Blue", is pure detroit. Pumping, raw and in your face rhythm patterns combined with lush sensual pads, solid bass and seductive swirling synths . This immediately takes a hold of your whole being, once heard, and never lets you go. Nor do you want it to stop! The lasting appeal of this style of music has never died and it never well! Truly refreshing and welcomed!

For over fifteen years, Orphx has been exploring the grey areas between techno, industrial and electro-acoustic music. Using an assortment of synthesizers, samplers, feedback systems, and various homemade instruments, Orphx combines the dark, experimental aesthetics of early industrial music with the pulse of techno, electro and dub. The project began in 1993 as a trio, consisting of Richard Oddie, Christina Sealey and Aron West. The group began to explore a shared interest in experimental music, taking their name from the ancient Orphic cult. West left the group in 1995 to focus attention on noise project Tropism, while Oddie and Sealey began incorporating more rhythmic elements into Orphx, inspired by an immersion in acid house, electro and minimal techno. Orphx has since gained a substantial international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European "rhythmic noise" scene, while making increasingly strong connections with like-minded artists on the experimental fringes of techno. Oddie and Sealey have performed in numerous countries around the world and have collaborated on numerous audio/visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical output. Orphx has released a number of influential albums and singles since the mid 1990s, combining elements of techno with power electronics, rhythmic noise, and electro-acoustic soundscapes. More recent releases have combined all of these approaches into new hybrids of synthetic / organic sound (Circuitbreaking, 2004; Insurgent Flows, 2005, Teletai 2008). The Division 12" featuring legendary techno producers Surgeon & Substance on Sonic Groove marks a new phase for the project, developing their unique sound and further blurring the boundaries between techno, industrial and dub.

Here we come with an EP that will happily surprise many. We are honoured to (re)introduce no stranger to the underground circuit, Troy Geary aka Mr. DJ Slip. He has been involved in the scene longer than many remember, with countless hits on some of the best record labels to date. Here we present a timeless, bone-grilling track with remixes by none other than Argentinian madman, Franco Cinelli and an abstract remake by our Mikael Stavostrand. This will be the first release in our new series called “ReVision” within Thema’s Catalogue where we will be re-issuing some classics with remixes by the new breed of movers and shakers as well as past heroes. We are honoured to be able to work with some of these artists and we feel it will also give some of this music a second life within the vast bloated world of forgettable “track-of-the-month” releases. Know your past and you will know where the future is. And speaking of the past, with summer upon us here in Brooklyn, we’re stealing a moment of quiet reflection before being swallowed in the madness that is post-Vernal Equinox-New York City. This loop in time has us circling somewhere around 1999. It’s only important because that’s when DJ Slip’s mighty “Available Light” first assailed us wide-eyed surface dwellers. It’s a sly yet unassuming hulk of a timelessness that goes out the way it came in: stone-faced, head down, eyes closed... not saying much because it doesn’t have to. You know the type. Señor Franco Cinelli has unravelled the original, exposing the light within, working the pumping bassline of the original into a shapely creature that sprawls across Slip’s incandescent expanse. This remake will tickle the fancy of those that enjoy the big room sensual bass line mayhem. You have been warned! On the flip: Mikael Stavostrand returns!!! ...and it appears that he’s just come back from safari as well. You see, Mikael went ahead and used the source material here as the backbone for his own unwritten tale of subterranean jungle survival. We think. In any case, this is indeed the wet and feral offspring of a consummate master and a young, fresh-faced mad craftsman.
