André Wittmann's debut album under the moniker Spur was made with both the body and the mind in order to indulge in an odd but somehow familiar "dance of cultures" as the young Lübeck-based Bavarian calls it himself. "I find it disturbing to see how all those fields of music are still strictly separated until this day. I'd rather see them all combined", he explains the idea behind "Nowhereland" which compiles a selection of the best cuts out of 20 to 30 compositions Spur perfected them during a month-long stay in Ghent in early 2014. On "Nowhereland", semingly odd time signatures form the backbone of what are essentially club-orientated tracks. Spur, who started playing drums as child, took to other instruments like guitar, marimba, violin and piano and whose influences range from Hip Hop to Stravinsky and Flamenco or Gamelan, approaches songwriting both theoretically and intuitively. "I aim at putting the mind and the body in motion", he sums up the idea behind the uniquely odd but somehow familiar "Nowhereland".

After celebrating 10 years in the business in 2013, Cadenza Records reach another milestone in a stretch that has made a big impact both on the musical and nightclubbing landscapes. The 100th release from Cadenza comes, aptly, from label boss Luciano. Reviving his Lucien-N-Luciano moniker especially for the occasion, the label will release 'Grace Of An Art' in March. The single comes backed with another new production, 'Rickson Trephala' and the vinyl release will come accompanied by a limited edition CD featuring a mammoth 60-minute track, grandly titled 'Timeless Song For Lovers Of The Morning Enlightenment'. 'Grace Of An Art' perfectly encapsulates Luciano's current studio mindset, following on from previous Cadenza single 'Cachai'/'Dance Unity'. A Herculean piece of rubbery tech-funk, just shy of fourteen minutes, and demanding very much your attention for the duration, as Luciano teases and coaxes intricate sound design and inflections over its steady and assured mechanical beat. Vocal refrains and its thick, rumbling synth line loop around the bones of the track, grainy claps and cavorting rim shots keeping the arrangement animated and spirited. More head music from one of the masters! Flip side, 'Rickson Trephala' is another highly spirited composition. A flexible bassline wraps itself around a minimal and energetic beat, choc full of abstract sounds and glitches, as intricate as you have come to expect from Luciano. Light keys provide the 'barely there' melody, the track relying on its infectious bass and an assemblage of blips and tweaky sounds to charge up the neurons. The 12" vinyl of this landmark Cadenza release comes accompanied by a bonus CD featuring one track. Both epic in length and title, 'Timeless Song For Lovers Of The Morning Enlightenment' is a grandiose piece of intelligent electronica, echoing the ideas of sound experimentalists such as Global Communication, but very much with Luciano's stamp on it, filled with sad pianos and wandering percussion and soaked in a dubby reverb that is both engaging and rewarding for those who last the distance.

The B-side features an alternative version of “Holding You” that brings Nôze’s dancefloor roots to the fore and dubs the track out into a taut, Detroit-infused workout, while remaining true to the allure of the original. A quest for form which is never static and accompanied by two constants - repetition and reduction. Reduction requires repetition in order to make the intangible tangible for man. This repetition also stimulates our perception and helps us find an inner self while illuminating towards the primal thought. Another synonym for "intangible" is "not human" - for the most reductive of primal thoughts, sprung from fractal chance, does not deal with human beings but with a formal language that is universal, drawing from the innermost, and only becomes tangible in accidental, fortuitous moments. Our efforts to free this formal language, by means of fragmentation, from the human conventions that bind us to overabundance, turns out to be - in our limited human perception - a never-ending search for artistic discovery. Repetitive Juxtaposition LP takes up two individual, but in their essence mutual, interpretations of seeking and breaking form, and places them - not opposite but next to each other.

There is quite a charming story of mutual love between Borrowed Identity and Tenderpark behind this record. The two have been exchanging letters of enthusiasm for each other for quite some time. And so the idea of this joint record has grown very naturally. For the 'Caps and Chords EP' Borrowed Identity teams up with his longtime musical partner Mechanical Soul Brother once more. As the title of the EP suggests, the two studio wizards come up with three very elegant Deep House tracks which are indulging in tender chords complemented by sweet Soul vocals und Funk samples. There is quite a charming story of mutual love between Borrowed Identity and Tenderpark behind this record. The two have been exchanging letters of enthusiasm for each other for quite some time. And so the idea of this joint record has grown very naturally. For the 'Caps and Chords EP' Borrowed Identity teams up with his longtime musical partner Mechanical Soul Brother once more. Having seen the first two releases on his self-run Unison Wax label win plaudits from critics and contemporaries alike, Berlin’s Diego Krause starts 2015 with a fresh EP of deep and textured house music. A1 opens the EP in style, its deep sunken bassline and clamouring percussion underpinning intoxicatingly woozy chords and a soulful vocal sample. Demonstrating Diego’s ability to pen strong groove-led house tracks, it exemplifies the headsdown vibes that we’ve come to expect from him. The breaks-orientated A2 offers up a new dimension to Krause’s production skills. Here, sharp drum breaks punch out a funk-tipped rhythm accompanied by a sweetened melody. If A2 reveals Krause’s hip-hop roots, then B1 evokes the producer’s schooling in New York and New Jersey deep house. A chopped up vocal samples loops over terse drums, a warm sub-bass and a Fender Rhodes sounding chord hook. The emergence of a nebulous piano refrain completes the package, making for a track that is both soulful and playful. B2 closes the EP in style. Tumbling hi-hats and reverb-licked bass patterns are joined by a wistful melody that finds Krause exploring the emotive juxtaposition between up-tempo and down-tempo sounds. The result is a subterranean house jam that will fan the white-hot embers of a 6am dance- floor. With 2014 having seen the Berliner tipped as a big name in the making, Unison Wax 03 offers up four tracks set to add to that momentum propelling Diego Krause further onwards and upwards.

Amsterdam based Cubicolor have established themselves as one of house music’s most exciting new names, with early singles “Next Planet” and “Got This Feeling” picking up support from the underground all the way up to BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong. Their first release of 2015, the “Magnum EP” sees them develop their warm, indie-leaning melodic sound with three beautiful cuts first heard in their recent Anjunadeep Edition mix. Title track “Magnum” is a luscious rolling juggernaut, driven by head-in-the-clouds melodies and anthemic, glowing chords. “Moments” shows off Cubicolor’s moodier side, weaving eerie melodies around a techy groove. The perfectly formed Italian label Claque is kick starting 2015 with a tidy new two track EP that features label boss Carola Pisaturo and Nick Anthony Simoncino in collaboration, and deep house pioneer Ron Trent on remix duties. The label has been doing its do since 2006 and always offered cultured releases, and this one is no different. Italian Simoncino has released lots of great 12inches and Eps on labels like Mathematics, Skylax and Creme Organisation, whilst label boss Carola Pisaturo also releases on a range of other labels, if not rather infrequently. The one original is Breeze, a deep, smoky house cut with kicks way below the surface, humid pads and spoken word vocal snippets all making for a spiritual and seductive atmosphere. Full of genuinely emotive soul and conjuring up a cuddly atmosphere that is insular and cerebral, meaningful and wholly complete, it is an archetypal deep house track that puts all modern imitators to shame. Remixing is Ron Trent, founder of Prescription records and alongside Chez Damier someone who very much laid out the blueprint for deep house in the mid 1990s. His remix allows a little more colour into the mix. Strings, melodies, jazzy lines and more expressive percussive hits all make for a more uplifting listening, but the track is still resolutely deep and spiritual. These two cuts are essential for any true fan of the deep.

The Standard of Moonstarr is a Toronto artifact excavated from what had been the Royal Cemetery in the ancient intersection of Dupont. It's approximately 4,500 years old and was probably constructed in the form of a hollow wooden tones with flourishes of jungle and techno represented on each side through elaborately inlaid programming. Although interpreted as a standard by its discoverer, its original purpose remains enigmatic. It was found in a royal tomb in Toronto in the 1920s next to the skeleton of a ritually sacrificed man who may have been its bearer. It is now available, in a reconstructed form, on New Kanada. The "Metropolitan" had survived in only a fragmentary condition. The ravages of time over more than four thousand years had caused the decay of the wooden house frame and bitumen glue which had cemented the baselines in place. The weight of the tracks crushed the object, fragmenting them and breaking the end frequencies. This meant that excavating the tracks were a challenging task. New Kanada excavators had been told to look for hollows in the ground created by decayed samples - and to fill them with bruk breaks, or wax to record the shape of the objects that had once filled them, rather like the famous parties of Columbus, Ohio and the entire Midwest. When the tracks of the Standard were discovered by the excavation crew, they found that the referential pieces had kept their form in the vinyl pressings while their digital frame had disintegrated. The present form of the "Jump Steady" is a reconstruction of this time, presenting a best guess of its original sound and aesthetic. It has been interpreted as a hollow funk break measuring 21.59 kHz, inlaid with a mosaic of 90's era jungle, red house painters and techno bravado. The track has an irregular shape with end pieces in the shape of truncated acid symbols, making it wider at the bottom than at the top, along the lines of the dark period of Reinforced. Inlaid tonal panels cover each long side of the "Highs and Lows". Each presents a series of scenes displayed in three registers, upper, middle and bottom frequencies. The two isolated EQ's have been dubbed "Highs" and "Lows" for their subject matter, respectively a representation of a morning feeling, and scenes from a deserted campfire.

Following on from last year’s “Your Charizmatic Self” EP, Night Slugs executive producer Bok Bok teams up with composer and keyboardist Sweyn Jupiter on a romantic new double A-side single. “Papaya Lipgloss” is a song about young love, presented in two distinct but equally weighty versions. Both mixes share a common melodic motif, skeletal yet sincere. The “Club Mix” draws on tribal House energy: a sweltering rhythm built of Latin percussion, Linndrum funk and pumping subs, over which melody gradually unravels in bursts of stark, juicy colour. Synths form a sensual narrative, remaining ever poised even as their pulpy goo engulfs all surfaces. This is intimate club music that brings a new kind of intensity to dance floors. Meanwhile, the “Sour Mix” is saturated and dripping with bitter-sweet nectar. This version sees “Papaya” transformed into an opulent bedroom jam, complete with quaking kickdrums and purring Moog bassline. A halftime drum kit of dumpster-drive 808s keeps things gritty while melodic goo leaks from between all the cracks.

Muscle and Mind is the return of Oscar Mulero to long plays, after Grey fades to Green and Black Propaganda. 'Muscle' and 'mind' may seem antagonistic terms in real life, but in terms of music they make sense together, especially when talking about techno. The coalition of introspection and abstraction is not incompatible with the rough and the percussive, and this album is a good example of this. The underlying message behind the title refers to the reflection of mental states in the body, the genesis of emotions where body and mind are managed by the sense of hearing. Throughout these twelve tracks, one can dive into the musical world of this producer whose discourse mutates in every album, always intricate, always meticulous. Darkness acts as a thread and repetition as hypnotic therapy. But now, he sets his usual hard sound aside and looks for a much more cared for and precise sound , where there is room even for a harmony and musicality that go hand in hand with danceability. The combination of atmospheres and rhythms is constant throughout the album. Each of the cuts has been prepared with few sonic elements. He takes elements away one by one, and keeps exclusively the necessary. A record that has been developed during endless hours in airports and travelling, absorbing influences from all over the planet. Made in solitude but surrounded by people who don't know what you are really doing on that computer. To close the circle, the album was mixed in professional studio using solid state technology, which gives this work a unique warmth that cannot be achieved in a domestic environment. Muscle and Mind will be released on vinyl and CD. The digital version will include extra tracks which will also be published in an EP. This will precede the album with edited tracks from the album and remixes by Stanislav Tolkachev and SHXCXCHCXSH.

the penultimate issue of raster-noton's unun series features »gomila park«, a new project by the two swedish musicians martin rössel and carl michael von hausswolff that started in spring 2013 in palma de mallorca. on their first ep released as a duo, they present three rather unconventional and diverse tracks. »leibniz«, for example, is characterized by a heavy rock attitude with lots of distortion and screaming guitar riffs. the b-side on the other hand, including the tracks »calculus« and »ramon llull«, is the more experimental part. considering only the track titles, »gomila park« is a homage to two of the first mathe- maticians and philosophers that helped developing the binary system and, generally speaking, the digital world. but despite all that, »gomila park« is also a matured piece of work that was held in trust for at least two years. it's once more an inspection of a fundamental possibility of music, a reference to the past. similar to mika vainio's »vandal« ep, »gomila park« echoes the tradition of rock (music) and is thus the counterpart of a younger, historically unbur- dened generation of producers like ueno masaaki or kyoka

The next release on Rinse is the second in a series of three EPs of gorgeous, punch-drunk house music from label regular Rupert Taylor, aka Xxxy. The follow-up to last year's acclaimed 18 Hours, it's a further spiral inwards for the tripped-out, wistful style he's increasingly come to make distinctly his own, with clouds of arpeggiated synth notes and vapourised voice rolling atop pillow-soft, droning bass. melody and disembodied vocals. Yet listen closer - or at peak time - and it's deceptively tough, building to a mesmerising blur of colour amid body-shuddering kickdrums. In contrast, 'Lately' is one of the brightest and most upfront Xxxy tracks to date, with its major key melody, synthetic chord stabs and spiralling momentum channeling both the spirit of electro pop and the futurist impulses of early Detroit techno - a heady cocktail. The former's gently plucked strings and trickling water summon up a contradictory tangle of atmospheres, with meditative warmth mingling with inescapable creeping anxiety, all underpinned by seething sub-bass. 'To The Sky' is a beautiful, vast abyss of a track: Iustina's vocals drift through space amid reedy drones and environmental sound, conjuring up an unlikely nexus point between British electronic dark masters Coil and the rugged sound system intensity of Digital Mystikz. We are proud to present our new release by Detroit veterans Keith Tucker & Anthony ‘Blaktony’ Horton. One of underground music’s most enigmatic characters since the mid-80’s, Anthony 'Blaktony' Horton first appeared as a member of the house group ‘Sight Beyond Sight’ (Submerge / Soul City / 430 West records). Further exposure in Detroit’s underground presented him memberships within various groups and collectives (Optic Nerve / early Aux 88 / Aux Men / Alien FM / Scan7), recording on labels like Direct Beat, Elypsia, Puzzlebox, Trans Atlantic, Minimal Soul, Night Vision and numerous guest features.

We started ‘The Classic Series’ featuring tracks that we love, bought, played out and which we have the feeling more people should know about them. For this first edition, It is a great honor for us to welcome such a living legend, a pioneer from the Chicago House scene: Mr K Alexi Shelby ! At the age of 12 he was already moving in the right circles, befriending Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy whilst frequenting the famous Warehouse. His upbringing in Chicago in the 70s and 80s meant that he was exposed to a range of genres and different styles of music including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Curtis Mayfield and David Huff. These same names would prove to be the roots of his influences. This projet includes two classic and timeless moments of Chicago house & techno music. On A side : ‘K’ Alexi’s Vertigo’, a massive, rare and very demand acid track from K-Alexi. Released in 1989 on legendary Transmat records, already play by major players like Robert Hood, Derrick May, Dj Rolando, Mike Huckaby or Martyn. On B Side : ‘You Get Down’, previously released in 1997 on his Nepenta Lp ‘Brings You Absolute Power’, a new edit here called ‘U Get Down’. A real piece of Chicago Jackin’ House ! From the tropics comes Whiskey Disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators.
It's loosely connected to Sleazy McQueen and his assorted cohorts. Kloof Street Diggin sees WD label honcho Sleazy McQueen team up with longtime DJ cohort, Romano Arcaini for three super-sized re- edits of the highest order. Each of these three songs are based around samples sourced during SMQ's recent tour stops in South Africa. Peace, Love + Harmony, the perfect track to segue between house and disco! Flute and synthesizer call and response building to an unexpected vocal explosion. On the flip, Disco De Moda, named after the Johannesburg party with a decidedly digital disco bent, arps and chugs to robotic climax. Finally, tidings are closed with the organic and synthetic, tied together in Private Life; a blend of flute and synth undulating to a psychedelic crescendo.

Holiday 80 inherited a massive collection of wax at a very early age, inciting a deep and lifelong respect for vinyl and the dark grooves. This instilled a profound love not-to-be-contained by a single genre. Each song on this palette reflects that diversity and spectrum. From the smooth intro on Kto dal nam deszcz with its easy groove to the boogie-blaze of Bez tego i owego. The rolling synth bass and sizzling strings of Zabawa w stylu folk are at once dark and light in a tense contrast. As comfortable on the B2 as in the basement, we hear the acidic melodies of Teleniedziela.
