Cologne based lone ranger, producer, coffee drinker and occasional bike rider Steffen Baldo aka Ugly Drums has been fine tuning the spokes of his career for 10 hard working years. Making early marks in the scene with his "Next Room EP" on German based label Polyfon, which received support from Moodymann, MCDE and cemented his reputation early on. Steffen later released dance floor workouts on Rush Hour, Fifty Fathoms Deep, Black Key Records, Quintessential and KOLOR LTD. His 2013 album left a burning mark on the sample based house scene, pushing the boundaries of the melting pot of his home base Cologne. Mr Drums has also extensively backed up his original works by remixing the likes of Manuel Tur, Toby Tobias, Holly Backler, Andy Ash, Inkswel and Bartellow. After the smashing "Get Up" edit released on FACES alongside Kid Sublime and Jayson Brothers, Ugly Drums is back on FACES Records with his best work yet "The Freak EP". Tidy discofied house EP from the faces boss.... also featuring the talents of Tokyo's Kez YM... TIP Friends come first, so to speak. We hold the words of those we hold dearly as gospel, and this EP mirrors that feeling. After his last release "One" on Room With A View (w/ Detroit Swindle remix) and several contributions to labels like MCDE, Endless Flight or together as Creative Swing Alliance on Wolf Music, Tsuba & City Fly - FACES Records & MCDE labels head honcho Pablo Valentino decide to release what he describes as his first full EP on his own imprint FACES. "Friends Say So" is a nicely stripped down filter-jam; you don't need much when all the elements are good like this: a haunting female vocal sample, gritty lo-fi beats, a disco loop. Reminiscent of early Shake or the very first Sneak records, this beauty will definatly set the floor on fire. "What Does It Take" sounds like a straight up Shelter anthem from '92 that just got unearthed. Heavy on the 909 and Juno keys, its the kind of late night jam that leaves everybody with a smile on their face. On the B-side, "Nuff Thangs" opens up things nicely; lush keys on top of a disco sample set the mood for things to come with "Can't You See", a female diva singing her ass off over dirty-as-hell MPC beats and rhodes stabs.
