Wow, this one's a biggie! Some smoothed out modern Soul for the discerning right here... dig it! Released in 1980 Charles Johnson's ?"Baby I Cried, Cried, Cried / Never Had A Love So Good" is a formidable double-sider, the A-side is a sweet slow jam where Charles lays it on the line in true grown man's fashion over a slick backdrop that is not a million miles away from some Philly style loving. The B-side is the big one though, a proper modern dancer, lovely production and the band is fully in the pocket. Drop this one and watch the dance light up, real music for the dancefloor! This particular 45 has long been a collectors item, and on a good day it can fetch hundreds on the Soul scene. This is a fully legit reissue, and features the classic golden Alston label artwork. Raphael 'Ray' Munnings is famously known as the band leader and singer of the mighty Bahamian Funk legends The Beginning Of The End, he is also a formidable solo artist in his own right with a clutch of sought after, rare 7" singles throughout the early to late 70's as well as numerous appearances with his band. 'Opportunity Knockin' from 1972 is an early one from Ray, released on TK Disco's Alston imprint, it's often been a rare 45 and doesn't show up very often. 'Opportunity Knockin' is channelling the usual sun-soaked vibes of his later material this single is a sweet one for summertime, breezy horn infused funk with tough drums and that Caribbean vibe. The b-side is also a winner, 'Sleep On, Dream On' is an uptempo slice of wah wah driven Soul with a serious groove and a peace-loving, ecologist theme running through Ray's vocals. Sublime stuff, for real fans of Funk and Soul rarities! Nab this rare 45 of Caribbean Soul, re-issued here in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. This monster 1976 LP from Nassau's Munnings brothers aka Beginning Of The End is a stone cold classic. Fact. Well deserving of a place in any record collection! This, their second LP (with 1971's infamous "Funky Nassau" preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound - a mixture of tough funk rhythms, Bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock - is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. Not surprising considering the band were one of the Bahamas foremost musical outfits. The brothers' musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of Nat King Cole and Count Basie at their fathers well known nightclub "the cat and the fiddle", what we get on this LP however is not jazz, but lean, melodic SOUL music! Original copies of this seminal LP can change hands for 100's on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. The LP has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. Not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of Miami's TK Disco empire. Now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the Munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. Released during the late 1970's Disco era, Milton Wright's sophomore long player has always stood out as a singular, innovative example of the deepest, rarest grooves known to underground Soul lovers all over the globe. They’re young and tough – and especially wonderful too – easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the Windy City! The set’s a Chicago soul gem from the early 70s – recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe that’s different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene – definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like The Delfonics or Soul Generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. Arrangements are great – handled by Tom Tom Washington, Eugene Record, and Cliff Davis – very much at the best Brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. The title cut’s a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier “Sly, Slick, & Wicked” track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called “This Is The Lost Generation”, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip. Re mastered and re released for 2015 in conjunction with Brunswick. Too legit to quit.

This is a masterpiece. And we mean it. Beautiful, golden-era soul written by Leon Sylvers III, produced by Jerry Butler and Keg Johnson.

The Sylvers were a family from Los Angeles who were very successful during the 70’s and into the early 80’s, with chart hits – deep into pop-disco territory by then! – including ‘Boogie Fever’, ‘Hot Line’ and ‘High School Dance’.

This is the groups second album, from 1973, and is one of their strongest. Opening with the awesome mid-tempo ‘We Can Make It If We Try’ the record moves through funk, boogie and deep soul moods, finishing on a hazy, acapella version of The Beatles ‘Yesterday’.

The Sylvers always provide a goldmine of samples. This album has been flipped by Madlib (for MF DOOM), Homeboy Sandman, 50 Cent, Ghostface Killah, Black Milk, Roc Marciano, David Banner & 9th Wonder and more.

Nico Gomez, a Belgian orchestra leader of Dutch roots, has long been a favourite with Latin fans, record diggers, DJs, and collectors alike. His blend of bossanova, latin jazz, and easy listening always turns up a few choice nuggets and surprises; what is perhaps most remarkable is that it was recorded in Europe.

Back in 2013, Mr Bongo re-issued Nico Gomez's sought-after 'Ritual' album from 1971, and now we follow it up with another jewel from his catalogue his 1972 album 'Soul Of Samba'. For this re-issue, we have opted to present it with the cover art originally used on the Trio Records version released in Japan. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the album was released with different cover art under the title 'Bossa Nova’, on Omega International and International Bestseller Company records, respectively. We loved the beautiful psychedelic design of the Japanese version and wanted to use it for this re-issue.

'Soul Of Samba' features several euro-bossa-jazz favourites such as the catchy 'Rio'; which was a firm DJ choice cut at jazz dance nights, including Brighton's 'Jazz Rooms' in the 90s. It also featured in Rainer Trüby's classic ‘Glücklich' compilation series which explored European-Brazilian-inspired music. The beguiling ‘Aquarela', with its engaging latin shuffle, entices feet to the dancefloor and is not one to miss. 'Agua’ has a lazy-quirky latin-funk feel with breathy-stoned vocals floating in the background. The album additionally features numerous breezy latin, Brazilian, and easy listening joints, some of which are ripe for sampling.
