Already, two releases deep, Renegade Hardware's 'From the Vaults' series has proven itself to be acquire-on-sight material for all serious DnB heads. We've seen landmark EPs from Chase & Status and Total Science reborn for the next gen, reminding everyone of the incredible contributions Hardware's roster has made to this music. And now, something a little bit different. This release is a four-track compilation of some of the most heavyweight producer collaborations ever cut to vinyl. Seriously.
For one thing, there's the proto-Bad Company combo of Absolute Zero & Subphonics - now better known as DJ Fresh and Maldini - dropping the dark, clinical and underrated 'The Code'. That's followed up by the haymaker that is Noisia and The Upbeats' 'Sacrifice', an expansive, cinematic and violently aggressive cut that helped establish the modern concept of "neuro" as we know it.
Then we have the darkside 'No Fear' by the pioneering jungle explorers Digital and Spirit. With the passing of Duncan Busto (aka Spirit) in 2018, this release is ideally placed to reintroduce his name and his legacy to the current crop of young ravers and record-buyers.
The final entry is Gremlinz & Overlook's rework of Future Cut's already-heavyweight 'Horns'. The original, not to mention the 'Horns 2000' relick, are classics in their own right, but this 2015 take does things differently, coming with a cold brutality and transforming the original into a whole new beast.

Next up from Renegade Hardware's 'From the Vaults' rerelease series we have an EP that might have just celebrated its
twentieth anniversary, but still sounds as future-proofed as ever. This is the 'Street Level EP'.
First, a bit of background. By 2001, Q Project and Spinback - or Total Science as they're known in combination - were
already well-established pillars of the junglist community. Between the pair of them, they'd delivered anthems like the
perennial 'Champion Sound', released on labels as disparate as Reinforced, Good Looking, Hardleaders and
Metalheadz, and even dropped a full-length album, 'Advance', on their own CIA imprint.
As we journey from 'Street Level' to 'Rebel Soul' onwards to 'Room Service', we hear the influence of Total Science's
junglistic roots, a sound that has remained steadfastly relevant across the generations. Breaks and samples are sliced,
twisted and manipulated into heart-palpitating arrangements, with an expert's ear for rhythm programming keeping us
just the right side of insanity.
The EP is closed out with Source Direct's remix of 'Out of Touch', reconfiguring Total Science's break and bass workout
into an evolving old skool-tinged surrealist landscape. So, we're shown yet another facet of drum 'n' bass music's
possibilities drawn out by Hardware's roster.
And again, Renegade Hardware's 'From the Vaults' series delivers. Many current junglists are actually younger than this
EP, which is why it's huge that this music has become available for them in an accessible form. Clearly, this era of
stylistic meldings as jungle influence combined with drum 'n' bass technique should be a cornerstone of their musical
education.

Before they RTRNed to jungle, before they produced for Rihanna and Rita Ora, even before 'More Than Alot' propelled them to mainstream recognition, Chase & Status were part of the Renegade Hardware camp. A storming run of releases - certified by Hardware's military-grade quality control - helped set their trajectory to stardom, none more so than 2005's 'Ten Tonne EP'.
Now, 2021's ravers, selectors and collectors - everyone who may have missed the EP's first outing - get to experience the heaviness for themselves as Renegade Hardware kick off their 'From the Vaults' series of rereleases. From the opening eponymous track, the blueprint of this EP and the whole 'From the Vaults' series is laid out clearly.
'Ten Tonne' combines the grittiest of bassface-inducing roll-outs with an underpinning sense of funk, a blend that typified Renegade Hardware's output. Straying neither into mass-market formulism nor the realm of soulless technical exercises, this is music with heart and passion as well as undisputable studio science.
Moving through the Vicious Circle collab 'The Grudge', the snarling and seething basslines of 'Trapdoor', and Prolix's stomping remix of 'Barbarians', we hear the roots and foundations of the world-dominating act Chase & Status were to become. These tunes are not curiosities or museum pieces, but vibrant and powerful pieces of DnB that are as relevant for contemporary dancefloors as they were when they first dropped.
