The long awaited first release from Melbourne diva house/ bizarro group Zanzibar Chanel.
'If Ru Paul and William Onyeabor had a love child' states the back cover, a hint of the quirky funky productions that have come to define the sound of Zanzibar Chanel… Or perhaps an inside joke from a group who have, until now, remained largely unknown to those outside of Melbourne's underground scene. Performing alongside their better know Melbourne counterparts (Andras Fox, Tornado Wallace, Harvey Sutherland, Michael Ozone) for the past few years, Zanzibar have crafted their own take on the esoteric house sound of their hometown. Elements of Andras Fox tape funk, Tornado Wallace sun bathed synths, but with the raw edges of MPC production and a 'don't give a fuck' DIY approach to music making and performance. Funky junk is first vinyl release from new Australian label RUFF RECORDS, the lovechild of Zanzibar front man and solo producer Zac Segbedzi. With a focus on unheard sounds from 'the down- underground', a broader artistic mission statement and a recent relocation to Europe, Ruff is a label to look out for in 2014…
