mak & pasteman - A. Jam One
2
mak & pasteman - B. Formation 131
Following releases on Redlight's Lobster Boy Label & Breach's Naked Naked Imprint, Mak & Pasteman return with their own label, Materials. Reflecting the texture in their music the first release is a 3 track EP spanning various influences, building on the palette of sounds they have developed over the past few years.
"Jam One" see's the duo venture into emotive synthesised house drawing from the darkness of their Drum & Bass influences right into the sounds of Detroit & Chicago. "Formation 131" removes any expectation of conformity leading directly into a heady break layered over dark atmospheric textures. The track builds on deep subs & distorted 808 hits juxtaposed with the dark emotion of early Jungle. "Stagger" begins ominously layering chords and filtered piano stabs over solid drums gradually building in a trippy synth line, from here we get the low end basses & tight production we have come to expect from Mak & Pasteman.

mak & pasteman - Tell Ya Something (Extended Mix)
We’re both over the moon and at the same time sad to have this track with us on Food Music, as we wave goodbye to one of UK house music’s most talented duos. After releasing their sublime ‘Tell Ya Something’ with us, Mak & Pasteman will be calling it a day to focus on personal projects and what a way to sign off. This looped up disco thumper tops the tree when it comes to the right vibe and production, and as if this wasn’t enough, house legend Junior Sanchez joins the digital package with a huge rework and completes the perfect send off for Craig and Matt. Thanks for choosing us to close your huge musical chapter - and we hope you won’t be missing for too long!

Mak & Pasteman return to their label Materials with a 3 track EP that explores Techno & dark textures to new depths. "The Whale" incorporates our love of dark twisted bass textures and driving analogue drums. Whale like noises and cinematic spoken word samples create suspense before unleashing a deep set grinding rhythm filled with twists, turns and atmospheric shots. “Runout” see’s us getting outright sinister, Pairing a twisted serial killer sample with complex textures and raw edgy drums. We like the darker side of music at times and this track gives us the chance to explore our moodier side. Mostly made with our Dave Smith gear we wanted to capture the raw gritty edge of these machines. “Artifacts” the final track off the EP doesn’t let up, this is warehouse techno with militant attitude, dark vocals, suspense like strings and a vibrating analogue bass tones. Creating a track with rich industrial textures and sparse pulsing drum work.

Mak & Pasteman, - Again
Leeds/Nottingham duo Mak & Pasteman might be in their 20’s, but their musical influences stretch from the funk and soul of the 60/70’s, through Juan Atkins’ proto-techno, to soulful house, D n B’ and UK Garage. Which won’t surprise anyone listening to this, their debut EP for Shifting Peaks, a 4 track statement of intent that sounds like it couldn’t have been made any time but 2012, but also feels like 20 years of hardcore continuum is embedded deep in it’s musical DNA . EP opener ‘Do the Same’ works a looped up, garagey, energy fuelled vocal around a broken beat, pulsing bassline, and deep pad washes for a hypnotic, but floor friendly outing. ‘Lost’ takes off on a darker tangent, combining a hypno-synth riff with fat drums and buzzing dark-core bassline , before the disembodied vocal sample emerges from the shadows and the spacey breakdown punches back into the brooding body of the tune. Vinyl crackles meld with percussion, subtly orchestrated drama underpins the arrangement , and an atmospheric afterglow from rave’s distant past radiates throughout. On the remix front, Leeds hotshot Youandewan keeps the momentum he built up in 2011 going strong into 012, as he strips down ‘Lost’ into 6.30 mins of synapapse stroking, dubby house. It nods to (post ? ) funky, it probably has relations that fought in the dubstep wars, but in the end it’s deep, immersive house music. San Franciscan Lando Kal didn’t hang about last year either, with quality outings on Rush Hour, Numbers and Hotflush. Here he takes snatches of ‘Do The Same’s vocal and loops it over a rolling, grimey, Washing Machine style bassline and punchy 4/4’s for a brooding, floor friendly mix.
