Cologne based lone ranger, producer, coffee drinker and occasional bike rider Steffen Baldo aka Ugly Drums has been fine tuning the spokes of his career for 10 hard working years. Making early marks in the scene with his "Next Room EP" on German based label Polyfon, which received support from Moodymann, MCDE and cemented his reputation early on. Steffen later released dance floor workouts on Rush Hour, Fifty Fathoms Deep, Black Key Records, Quintessential and KOLOR LTD. His 2013 album left a burning mark on the sample based house scene, pushing the boundaries of the melting pot of his home base Cologne. Mr Drums has also extensively backed up his original works by remixing the likes of Manuel Tur, Toby Tobias, Holly Backler, Andy Ash, Inkswel and Bartellow. After the smashing "Get Up" edit released on FACES alongside Kid Sublime and Jayson Brothers, Ugly Drums is back on FACES Records with his best work yet "The Freak EP". Co-produced by Kalakuta Soul System, Chesney and featuring Detroit based MC/Producer :brownstudy, Steffen deliver a multi dimensional, raw, untainted EP, that displays a splash of all colours- House, Disco and Hip Hop. Part two of 6th Borough Project’s ‘Find Your Rhythm’ remixed EPs sees OOFT, Frederick, Haku, The James L'Estraunge Orchestra all provide new takes on these much-loved tracks.
Stepping up first, OOFT reimagines ‘Bad News’, opting to portray a deeper tone to his version compared to the Scandinavian disco feel of the original. Revolving the track around a prominent, rumbling bass synth yet maintaining an undeniably bouncing, dancefloor groove. Following this, Fredrick takes to ‘Right Next Time’, moulding it into a big room powerhouse. Laced with dream inducing arps and a hardy topline, tied together with an undulating bass that resonates within the belly of the track.
On the B side, Haku steps up with a Dub version of ‘Release’ reworking the bassy afro stylings into a gritty, lo-fi 4x4 beat. The modulated synth stabs interlink with a punchy acid line whilst the rhythmic vocal exhalations add an ethereal touch to proceedings.
Last of the remixes, the spacey dub makeup of ‘Back Where It All Began’ gets flipped by the The James L’Estraunge Orchestra, beautifully rescoring the track into an orchestral masterpiece. It slowly builds and builds till it opens up into an incredible DnB infused, jazz closer that will leave the bodies begging for more.

6th Borough Project’s 2017 standout LP “Find Your Rhythm” get’s the remix treatment from five in demand artists. On the A side Mathias Schober flips “Someday” from a chuggy acid number into a brooding synth laden techno stomper, whilst Lay-Far switches the DnB flavours of “Back Where It All Began” into a breakbeat tinged house roller. The final remix on the A side is taken by Afrobad, who creates a broken beat rhythmic stepper out of title track “Find Your Rhyhtm”.
Flip it over and Jad & The take things deep with their remix of “Release” creating a sun kissed, blissed out version of the original. Whilst Deep Space Orchestra take the closing slot of this Fifty Fathoms Deep remix package turning “One Way Out” from a rave leaning bass track into a hard hitting, glitched out rhythmic weapon complete with killer drum programming and a touch of the UK funky to it.

To celebrate Fifty Fathoms Deeps 2nd year of pressing we asked some of our favourite producers to remix a selection of cuts from our back catalogue and as expected they've all come up trumps! The EP opens with Fouk boys riding the groove on their remix of Ugly Drums Don't Let Life (Passing By) then Thatmanmonkz goes left of centre with his reimagining of Phil Asher feat James Massiahs Move Ya Self. On the flip New Zealand's Frank Booker comes correct on his take of Lay-Fars Triptych to round off a great package. The EP is a fitting way to mark another year of quality music from Fifty Fathoms Deep. More
