Bergstrom cuts to the chase: cavernous, reverbed chords, slicing high hats and steely snares strapped to a sinewy 909 kick, with a siren droning faintly in the background. Four-to-the-floor Ekaterina is the fever dream of funky house: icy hats and reverbs trick out a heavily filtered synth and a heaving sample of vintage polka. Kicking off the flip, more war: State And Revolution evokes a kind of long march beneath forbidding skies, its occasional skirmishes between razor sharp hats and muted claps blanketed by echoing synth stabs. Finally, Damperhof draws the curtains and departs the dancefloor: a mournful, impressionistic cello, a slow throb, a little acid, sombre chords bouncing around the ruins... this is Mirko at his most expressive.

Rene's return to Blank Slate, one year on, with two further excursions in grooving, minimal, dubwise house music, moody and haunted; a kind of widescreen steppers, Berlin style. Right from the off, the Cywilizacja sequel is one step beyond, with hectic, scattered claps, and filter effects running into the distance. Again, melody and ambience are conjured from the moans and whispers of old films, but more pressingly than before. Half-submerged synths stick close to the hard-driving 808 beat. Midway, the elements become unglued, slipping out of synch, going off on their own... before the bizarre climax. Lamia retains the disquiet but eases up a little on the theatrics. Bobbling bass and queasy pads pock the orchestral miasma; some singing whipped from a student Tarkovsky opens the way forward for the bones of a rhythm.

instrumentation, samples from vintage 78s, internet videos and analogue electronics, this fifth instalment holds nothing back. Those familiar with Keita’s production will know that his sound is a unique blend of raw, crunchy disco beats, touches of acid and a left-field sensibility which creates an intense and captivating atmosphere on the dance floor. A vibe that has seen his tracks become secret weapons for DJ’s as diverse as Ivan Smagghe, Pablo Fierro, DJ Nature, Frank Tope and Hot Toddy.
Kicking off the EP we have a track called Broken, a high energy and uplifting slice of loopy filter disco which hits all the right notes. Exploration, collaboration and curiosity define the rhythm at the beating heart of Mehmet Aslan’s exemplary compositions. The Swiss-born producer of Turkish heritage has already forged a singular path through production, DJing and full-band performances, navigating the more esoteric corners of Berlin’s club culture without sacrificing his musical heritage or innate creativity. Opener ‘Spectra’ provides a forceful, almost industrial breakbeat that establishes the exigency of the album as well as its sense of wonder, while ‘Euphoria’ reaches the potency of its promise slowly, with Aslan’s modular melodies meeting the flourishing percussion of guest player and multi-instrumentalist, POPP. Finally, ‘Aura’ delivers a cinematic conclusion, mixing an elegiac organ motif, haunting guitar chords and the prophetic sense of a scorched earth. Here, with patience and soaring production, Aslan once more makes the abstract and the unthinkable somehow tangible, mixing in sampled birdsong. Accordingly, ‘Auguri’ is being released in accordance with EarthPercent, the music industry’s climate foundation, co-founded by Brian Eno. A portion of the album’s publishing will be credited as part of ‘The Earth As Your Co-Writer’ initiative, allowing artists to directly credit The Earth in their new compositions. Here, streaming and publishing from Aslan’s recorded sounds are automatically paid back to a number of vital initiatives worldwide. Leaning into some of the most vital questions and anxieties of our time, ‘Auguri’ is not a project without a sense of hope. From studio to sea, Mehmet Aslan continues to look to the skies and beyond.

It’s 2024 and Egyptian-born artist of South Sudanese origin Sam Alfred has had a monstrous 12 months. A new year means stepping in a new zone with new tunes. This is Forward Step. First is the title track “Forward Step (Journey Mix)”, an epic cow-bell-laden house hammer that blooms into a euphoric flower. Running with a 90’s club flavour, Sam lays airy synths over punchy piano and rave stabs while an all-powerful speech plays out, celebrating the idea that we’re all in control of writing our futures. There’s a bubbling over of excitement on this one as it builds and builds and builds! Up next is “Care 4 U” – a crunchy drum club roller paired with fuzzy bass tones and a super hooky vocal loop. A section that’s been lodged in our brains from the moment we heard it. Toss in airy pads and a key melody that’s also impossible to forget and this track’s got you hook, line and sinker. In true Sam Alfred style, “Care 4 U” is yet more proof that this lad is a wizard at writing jacked-up club cuts, each full of fizz. Third in line comes “Keep It” a relentless hypnotic piece of techno. Outer space synths drone while shuddering percussion rumbles beneath. It’s here where the EP takes a darker turn. The curtain closer and focus track for the EP drop is “Distance” – an acidic house track to seriously lock and load to. Characterised by sharp hi-hats and lively keys, as its name suggests this one goes and goes and goes.

030/313 – Berlin/Detroit, the fundamental techno union. Now Carhartt WIP, whose roots can be traced to Detroit, Michigan, join forces with Tresor for a collaboration that celebrates the enduring spirit of two music metropolises. Referencing the early 90s compilations like “Tresor II – A Techno Alliance”, they present a 12” mini compilation with exclusive material from both cities.
The compilation opens with “I.D.L.E.”, a lost Model 500 track, of essential funk that touches the techno soul of The Motorcity, with trippy melodies and cosmic drilling traversing electrified Mojo freeways. It’s followed by another true Detroiter: Ectomorph’s “Searching (Live At Globus)”, a first extract from their live set at Globus in 2021, which BMG and Erika played on borrowed equipment after Erika’s case was lost on a flight. The A-Side stays in Detroit and finishes with “Your Body”, an exclusive track by AMX, also known as The AM, one of Detroit’s freshest funk techno sensations. She carries on the mentorship mindset by having learned from two of the greatest: D.I.E. and Scan 7. “Your Body” is a classic techno feel swinger, where subtle chords meet drum machine funk in the spirit of early Detroit techno.
DJ Stingray 313 opens the B-Side with a bang. Precisely hacked techno, full of dark funk and that special industrial jack, that the man in the mask has made his own. A total “Dynamic Instability”. Magic & furious. The thrill continues with “Metal Goat”, by JakoJako, one of Berlin’s brightest synth sensations. She provides an introspective grower that slowly evolves into a fast-paced techno grinder, laden with micro shifts and magic twists. The final tune comes from Erik Jabari, a newcomer from the 030 zone, emerging from the Hard Wax peers with haunting modular synth techno–a feverish minimalistic trip of motorized kicks. DJ Pete performed as spiritual guidance on this one. It’s floor proven. An overall cachet of “030313” - the small compilation with a huge techno heart.

Over the last two years, Ahmet Sisman has become one of the most interesting newcomers within the German Techno scene. His music is located at the junction between Turkish roots and western post-modernism, but still always succeeds in orchestrating the dark energy of the night, too. Consequently, his last EP "Hit Me Low" (Dumb Unit) could be found in the charts of Tiefschwarz and André Galluzzi, and the percussive masterpiece from '98 "Buiya" belonged to Sven Väth's most popular tracks of the Ninth Season last year. "Hey Now", Sisman's debut for Cocoon Recordings, is not hiding his passion for the Chicago Trax sound, but supplements an incredibly deep brilliance of sound by pointed percussions, modular Acid and lots of echo reverb.
The two protagonists of the flip side, however, don't need any introduction: for more than 15 years now, Johannes Heil is an essential part of the German Techno community. With classics like "Paranoid Dancer" (Kanzleramt, 1998) or "Calling" (1999), he belongs to the musical long-term memory of Techno but beyond that, he always was a reliable guarantor for musical development, too. The same is true for Heiko Schäfer aka Heiko M/S/O, who is DJ, club promoter and producer (e.g. for Pascal FEOS ("Our Music", Ongaku 1995) and Atom Heart ("Mihon #3", Pod Communications 1992)) since 1988 and thus a very important figure in the Rhein Main Techno scene. Their first co-production "You Should Know" uses the power of percussions, but at the same time, takes a bow before the best productions of a DJ Pierre with some Wild Pitch strings and is thus perfecting the modernisation of the Sound of Chicago.
