Next up from Mind Fair is a crafty cover of cosmic classic, That Thing, by That Thing. Originally released as a currently scarce 12 on AVI in 1977, That Thing was a one-off synth-pop project produced by Dutch musician Geertjan Lacunes – who worried the outer limits of various European hit-parades during the ‘70s and ‘80s under the alias Jerry Rix. German label Jupiter picked up the quirky curio and repressed it as 7 for wider distribution, no doubt envisioning that they’d licensed a novelty monster the scale of Chicory Tip’s Son Of My Father - which alas was not the case.

The track was however a firm favourite of pioneering Italian DJ, Daniele Baldelli, since its wonky bass riff can be heard spinning in and out of a multitude of his legendary mixtapes - where it`s twisted, almost inverted, by the maestro’s use of EQ.

Back in 2020, Mind Fair have fashioned a faithful but you-betcha beefed-up reworking. The crazy lyric - care of Chicken Lips cohort, Johnny Spencer - and cowbells accompanied by un-MIDI-ed Moog and modular synth twitches, italo arpeggios and fuzzed guitar tones.

Fabrizio Mammerella delivers a remix that's like a meeting of NYC’s Emergency Records, and Belgium’s Antler and Subway. Chris Barbosa and Morton, Sherman and Belluci. ‘80s New York and ‘90s New Beat. Dropping the chorus into devastating delay, chopping Johnny up into percussive Pop Muzik snippets. Sealing the psychedelic deal with a deft dose of analogue acid.

In comparison, Eric Duncan’s re-imagining, initially comes across as kinda muted, but that’s just to catch you off guard. While pitched down, and the drums for sure more sedate, it’s definitely the trippier of the two revisions - with all sorts of strangeness throwing abstract shapes deep in its detail. That 303 now sounding severely stoned.

It’s like that cat at the afters, the one who commandeers the drinks table in the kitchen and then bends any and every unsuspecting ear - spontaneously connecting the disparate dots in the universe, seemingly without stopping to draw breath - while endlessly shaking folks’ cocktails. The kind of nut that everyone knows, but can never work out how they make it home.

Tongue-in-cheek weirdness worthy of Eric’s Rub N Tug partner, Thomas Bullock, and his mate, DJ Harvey, too slow to disco, too high to stop dancing, it’s quality psyche gear for the experienced, discerning, dimensional traveler. There’s a dub for those that can’t quite handle the vocal (lightweights!).

The second half of the Mind Fair double header is the 3rd and 4th of 4 new tracks, none of which will be on their hotly tipped and eagerly awaited eponymous LP due later this year on Golf Channel ! 'Take me to the Bridge' is a cover of the disco classic featuring the vocals of Lauren Faulkner & Charmaine Bains, all percussion and sweet sweet rhodes, perfect morning music. 'Let the Music Take Your Mind' does just that, a languid groove that liquefies your brain and transports you slowly down the river, drifting on a lazy summer day with nothing to do except watch the trails... The package is rounded out by a remix from Joel Martin and Gerry Rooney aka The Velvet Season and the Hearts of Gold which takes over where their own filthy bangers 'Camel Toe Central' and 'Wild Honeyz' left off.
It literally booms out and just screams warehouse, dragging the ghost of 'Ma Foom Bey' kicking and screaming into saucer eyed 2014. Both 12's feature stunning full colour artwork by Thomas Bullock aka Tom of England of Rub n Tug fame.

I was deep in Texas when a call came through..."Hey man it's Cherry ! ...We got some sick new shit for you, gonna blow your mind" I waited nervously for the package. it arrived two weeks later. I slipped the hot black acetate from its wrapper and placed it on the turntable... Wired guitars wail like banshees on heat, primal beats erupt drenched in dark juice from roots of trees slick with crunk. Flutes and bells hang like exotic flowers that reek of jungle sex and all night long the pulse goes on and on and on' As usual Cherry was right...this most surely is one sick motherfucker of a record. Don't get me wrong there's warped beauty here aplenty but you gotta take it easy. Don't ingest it all at once...make sure you're in comfortable surroundings, trust me I know...six months later and I'm still feeling the burn.

On a fishing trip two years ago, the two main guys behind Africaine 808: D Leyers and Nomad - went to a tackle shop to buy some creepy crawlies (saltwater worms), not knowing that they were about to make a life changing discovery. In front of the shop a blind man was jammming on a little electronic organ, stomping his feet, singing, growling and basically making a scene. The boys were quite impressed with the fella, who introduced himself as 'Blind Double D'. They offered to bring him home and record him. He turned the offer down, but offered instead that they could record him on the spot in front of the tackle shop - if they bought him a bottle of good Bourbon. He explained that he would never set foot into a studio again in his life: he was sick of music production and the music industry in general, and that he just wanted this bottle of Bourbon and to be left alone. The boys got him the bottle, and recorded Blind D.D. on the spot with a tape recorder they borrowed from the tackle shop. Unfortunately, the tape was stored in one of the tackle boxes over the trip, and some of the creepy crawlies crawled into the tape and stank it all up. This added some extra funk to the recording. With Dirk and Nomad's usual studio trickery and production skills, they created the two versions of this very very funky, creepy, stanky track. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do. This record is dedicated to Blind D.D, wherever he is...

Now he teams up with Golf Channel's own wild man Mike Severson from the psychedelic Disco rock outfit Heroes of the Galleon Trade. After a session one night, the two step out for a cold one and bump into burly biker bar bandit Randy Winter and the singer song writer sex visionary Emily Infinity. After a few drinks they invited them back to the studio and the vocals were set. Put on your jean jacket slip on your leather boots and ready yourself for a night thrill ride. From a basement studio in Hackney, East London comes PAYFONE's 2nd release on GOLF CHANNEL - QUARANTINE b/w PADRE, PRAY FOR US. Following on from 2014's extremely well received PARADISE heater, PAYFONE continue down a similar path for the A side QUARANTINE. Featuring once again 24 year old vocal powerhouse Louis Howard Jones, QUARANTINE is a semi auto biographical take on the hardships of a an underprivileged youth, set against a tough Phil Passera production that sounds more New York City 1984 than New Port County 2004 (Jones was born and raised in Cardiff). Cruising at 120 BPM, the dark funk guitar intro gives way to some heavy slap bass and deep synth that touches Michael Jackson's THRILLER before the direct and brutal vocals of Jones hit you right between the eyes. PADRE, PRAY FOR US is a bizarre Afro-Cuban inspired homage to Passera's Italian father Sergio ( who's telephone call can be heard on the songs intro). Featuring the lethal trumpet of former Cuban military private Eikel Venegas Hernandez, this instrumental takes you to the Pinata Party via downtown Lagos. Golf Channel every time !

Two pieces of snarling filter house from NYC heavyweights Robbie Busch aka DJ McBoing Boing - record dealer to the stars, digger extraordinaire, & DJ of sweaty underground parties around the world, and Josh Dunn - one part of the sorely missed 100 limousines, and one third of the holy trinity that put on New York's legendary Foreal People party. For two guys so deeply immersed in the rich history of urban dance music, from the Blues & Gospel through deep Disco, Soul, Chicago and Detroit sounds, you could be forgiven for expecting to hear a rich homage to the sounds of the past. Instead we get the future ghost of Ron Hardy playing the record backwards on a janky turntable with a quarter for a counterweight and fucking shit up in every conceivable way.
