SCR DARK SERIES is the new label of SCR that’s concentrating on dark techno. Number 001 comes from no less than long time techno hero ALEXANDER KOWALSKI who delivered an amazing detroit techno floor burner driven by deep chords and subtle melodies. Alltime primetime favourite alert! For their remix CASSEGRAIN dubbed the track out and transformed it into a pulsating, reverberating dub techno piece that’s slowly morphing into more and more deepness. D_FUNC stripped down the original and gave it a bit more of a push with a heavy bassline and a strong string melody, Old school basement techno style!

While the saying goes that writing about music is like dancing about architecture, this seems to be rather unfitting when it comes to artistic works like ELECTRIC INDIGO’s release for the next installment on SCR-DARK SERIES, the techno-leaning sub-label of Berlin’s SUICIDE CIRCUS club enterprise of over 20 years of existence. Depending from which angle you look at it, her forthcoming record is either a legit piece of artistic expression well worthy of being written about, due to her incorporation of digital bits, pieces and sound bites, ranging from fragments of granular sound synthesis to chopped-up voice recordings or spectral processings – while at the same time, it’s simply two beautiful pieces of reduced, smart and abstract club music to listen and dance to, each accompanied by a hefty remix from a couple of hand-picked fellows in the likes of Bill Youngman and Dadub. Berlin’s notorious techno stalwart BILL YOUNGMAN contributes a distinct interpretation with his slightly broken peak-time banger of a take on “Cinq”, wilst DADUB, the duo made up of two of the core artists (and mastering wizards) of the well-renowned Stroboscopic Artefacts-imprint, reconstruct the original “Zero” to a fiercely pumping, blacker-than-black monster. Yes, we are indeed very excited about this release, obviously, and we’re really looking forward to seeing it hit the stores soon, as it turned out to be a rare case of heartfelt cooperation between like-minded souls and, first and foremost, friends, who engaged in a DIY effort to then have it culminate in an adventurous record – a kind of approach that, as another saying goes, was once referred to as True Spirit.

Alexander Kowalski is someone you should know. Not only is he a resident artist at our club, but with uncountable EPs and several albums on Heiko Laux’ label Kanzleramt and others, he has contributed more to electronic music than many others. To have a separate platform for the darker and harder productions of his, he created the alias D_FUNC. a while ago. When he approached us with the tracks that are now on the record in hand, we immediately fell in love with the Mills-like energy of them. Perfect drum programming, driving synth lines two perfect tools for any proper techno set. The Dirt Mix of Revalism which is included in the digital release package puts the original in a more modern jacket with its stompy beat – another proof of how well Alexander knows what the djs need to please their crowd.

SAMULI KEMPPI played live twice at Suicide Circus, and since his energetic sound really fit well with our club, we started talking to each other about a release on our DARK SERIES imprint. So here we go now, after releases on labels such as Prologue, Mote Evolver and Perc Trax, SAMULI KEMPPI now is ready to rock your boat with three tracks on our label, which define a very particular sound of their own. LAST DAY ON EARTH brings Samuli’s apocalyptic vision to the dancefloors. Dark hisses, well scaped spaces and a hookline with the pull of a spacecraft make up for a track that with no doubt will be one of the techno anthems of the next months. A killer of a track! On the B-side SPACING has similar sound aesthetics as Last Day On Earth, but comes along more playful whereas CALLING approaches the apocalyptic theme from a very different angle. Bleepy synths over a banging beat let you think of laser shots in the dark, haunting and scary.

The second record of our label comes along as another compilation of tracks delivered by our fellow resident DJs and friends. Our mate and well established producer FRANK MARTINIQ delivers “The Renegade Circus”, a smooth dub bomb that will work on the floors at any time of the night, with its smooth chords and gentle beat programming it will make people dance whether you open the night with it or play it peaktime to a screaming crowd. FRANKLIN DE COSTA’s “Birdy” stands in clear contrast to this. With its particularly raw sound design and its weird birdy melody this track sounds like the favorite song of a dusty machine taken from some still unwritten child book. MIKE VAMP’s “Licence to Thrill” rounds up this EP up with its pumping disco flavour, compatible with any throbbing floor.

SUICIDE CIRCUS RECORDS is a new label connected to the Berlin Club Suicide Circus. The label represents the club in all its musical facettes, ranging from house and tech house to techno and all its derivates. MATHIAS SCHAFFHÄUSER is a regular guest at our club. With Nuevo Romance he has delivered a funky theme for the late night romantics. FALKO BROCKSIEPER, also a regular guest gives us something For The Birds, a classical house piece with beautiful chords. BENI is one of our resident djs, a true school tech head. His track Growth displays well his approach to the dancefloor: dark and functional. Last but not least D_FUNC. vs MARIO BERGER show off with a strong techno tool. D_Func. is ALEXANDER KOWALSKI’s alias for his raw techno output and despite of the raw apporach to this dancefloor monster you can well feel his professionality in production.
