New Jack City, - The Golden Age
This November sees the launch of Manchester based imprint Music Is Love Records, kicking things off with a four-track release of sublime house cuts in the form of 'Back In The Dayz' by Dutch duo New Jack City. In true Manchester fashion the labels philosophy is to create a platform for releasing 90's tipped underground house music and embodying a hands on attention to detail with heavyweight vinyl, hand curated artwork and
high grade remix artists set for each release. Local acts, artist friends and up and coming producers will be providing releases from the off with label owners Oli Furness and Angus Jefford delivering remix works on each under their Music Is Love guise. Arnhem based New Jack City launch things here, they're relatively fresh faces on the scene having formed their collaboation in early 2011, their ethos is heavily focused on Chicago house music with an old school grit and rawness incorporated. Title track 'Back In The Dayz' opens the release, utilizing timeless 909 drum programming with a big open hat, off-kilter claps and weighty kick. A subtle sub bass softly meanders around the drums in the background adding a bouncy shuffle while warm Rhodes chords build the track alongside a filtered vocal chop. Classic house stabs are introduced to the latter stages alongside a soulful spoken word vocal about the feeling of house rounding off the old school vibe. Next up is label owners Music is Love's rework of 'Back In The Dayz', adding a sharp intensity to the drums with an insistent snare pattern running throughout and the signature sounds of 90's house, a deep bubbling organ hook brought in, this is a brilliantly contrasting remix from the duo with a clear distinction yet capturing the vibe of the original cut beautifully. Next up is 'Gimme That Chance', a pacier affair picking up the tempo slightly and embracing a US Garage vibe. Dreamlike synth chords, warbling pad lines and a sonorous walking sub-bass build the tracks body while an amalgamation of vocal chops are layered, looped and processed throughout, creating an ever evolving dynamism. 'The Golden Age' closes the release with crunchy distorted drums and heavily reverberated synth shots running from the start, the track takes on a darker form than the preceding tracks with a peak-time dance floor approach. The introduction of a warm melodic synth melody in the centre stages adds a unifying house touch, breaking things down before the pumping heavily swung rhythm re-enters and tails out the track. This is an outstanding inaugural release from Music Is Love Records and a clear indication of the sheer quality to come from this brand new Northern England based label.

Music is Love boss returns to his home label after a few brief excursions on Hot Creations & Viva Music last year, and he returns in style. 3 summer time slammers and a stella remix from the Mak & Pasteman boys. Middle Ground is a dusty filtered house track, aligned with a soaring string section, which narrate the warm uplifting journey this track lays down. Mandingo was made as a tool for Oli s sets last summer and after some huge reactions and some serious demand, Mandingo was set for a vinyl release. Big stabs and plenty of funk this track is party ready. On the flip we find Mak & Pasteman return to Music is Love after an appearance on the 3rd LOVEBOX VA in 2016. Piano4 is flipped into what these boys do best, Simple stripped back grooves delivered with stupendous power. On B2 is the original take on Piano4 which sees Oli flexing his power house muscles on this big piano track. Piano4 is an unrelenting beast that twists and turns its way through various passages of maximum intent.

oli furness - 64
The thirteenth release maybe unlucky for some, but not here. With label head Oli Furness delivering the Weather Underground EP featuring a shudderingly good Bodyjack remix. Music is Love Records make their own luck as always. Comprising of the standard format from Music is Love with includes 3 tasty originals paired with a killer remix. The crew deliver just that. Crash Gordon opens the vinyl with a BANG. It's off kilter groove is an instant head nodder and super infectious. Oli always pushing the boundaries with his production and with this we get a nice display of his skills, bringing out the tone and life in the sounds. Bodyjack has the task of remixing Crash Gordon and steers the off kilter track into much heavier territory. Something Bodyjack does so well, heavy and rolling whilst keeping you firmly locked in. The B side opens with a big party track entitled Big booty girls, a track ready to make any party lose their Sh*t. Heavy machine drum grooves as are often found on the Music is love boss's tracks and yet again they are central here, a heavily distorted 707 cowbell driving the frenzy is the most notable. Killer stuff. To round up the ep we find the track 64. This is a continuation of the party vibes of the B1 but done in a very different style. Here we find the vibes of late 80's Miami, Booty shaking 808 drum patterns and funky ass loops. Staples of Mr. Furness's Sound.

Maintaining the focus firmly on the underground and keeping that no-frills party vibe running throughout their output, Music Is Love keep things flowing at a steady pace with their 12th release. Dedicated to continually curating original ideas, the premise behind MIL012 is all about the label paying homage to their most prominent musical influences. Leading the way behind the new concept entitled Tribute, head-honcho Oli Furness teams up with one of his favourite producers - Chicago house legend Paul Johnson - for a four track EP, with two tracks from either producer intended to highlight the impact of Johnson's impact and influence as an artist. Paul Johnson has been a staple of house music over the past 20 years, and has long been a revered DJ and producer known for his distinctive rhythm and soulful sounds. Continuing with his penchant for up-front house music, Johnson kicks off the EP with Movin Baby. A stomping 4/4 beat marches over an intermittent vocal grab, while 90s afflicted key chords flourish steadily on top of trailing drum sequences to give a predatory rhythm with a solid dance-floor focus. I'm A Freak follows up, infused with the sort of unreserved energy that has characterised Johnson's music over the years. A solid train-track house groove built from only the sparest of elements kicks things off, before a hypnotic vocal prevails over incessant percussive slices, a wubbing sub bass and thick melodic tones, racing alongside the flecked groove for five minutes of deliciously locked-in pleasure. Irresistible, stripped-back grooves are clearly a preoccupation for Furness, who delivers more heavy-hitting house in the form of Gurl and Nightclub Romance. Gurl is characterised by crisp, clean percussion sequences, snapping snares and an entrancing male vocal that coheres rhythmically over the cowbell and marching drum combo. Laying the focus on a classic house aesthetic with acid-fused textures, Nightclub Romance finishes off this well-crafted EP. Acidy stabs and shuffling drums coerce against a flurry of hi-hats and sporadic, dubbed vocal murmurs to give a stomping groove aimed squarely at the dance floor; its unadulterated, primitive authenticity make it the type of track that would have worked just as well in the 90s as it would have today, a testament to the thematic style of the whole EP.

London-based artist Jonny cade has already enjoyed solid recognition for his releases on the likes of 2020 Vision and Morris Audio. This time round, he raises his game once again for Music Is Love's 10th release, dishing up a serious dose of house goodness aimed squarely at the dance floor. Get On My kicks off proceedings with hurrying drums that shuffle over a rumbling bassline until 90s inflicted keys quicken and build the tempo over the course of the track. The ticking hi-hats, snares and hand claps are woven intricately over the shifting key stabs, while a faint female vocal teases and whirls throughout. Confused Keys slows the tempo slightly, with a more defined bassline paving out against the groove laden percussion sequences and distorted vocal sample. Elasticated keys ricochet off each other until a melodic interchange of pads submerse at the break, slicing the elements of the beat and taking it closer to peak-time. Nottingham's Nail adds resounding deepness with his mix of Get On My. Shuddering key pads flourish to form the fore of the track, bouncing off the percussive loops that rhythmically swing out over faint synths to add a true deep breadth to his remix . Give it All Up finishes off the 4 track EP the way it started: swift pace, swaggering 90's inspired house. A flurry of claps and snares are matched by groove-heavy drums and a vocal sample that upends the overall hands-in-the-air mood of the EP. Fomenting his own melodic sound that is part house, part garage, Cades material is coherently woven together, without ever being cast free from an underlying rhythmic house groove throughout.

oli furness - Creepin in the shadows
Music Is Love is back with its 8th EP, this time coming from label boss Oli Furness with a remix from U Know The Drill. Furness is the Manchester based producer who, in the last couple of years, has established himself as a very real voice in the global house conversation thanks to EPs on labels like the legendary Nervous, Morris Audio and Skylax. Following releases from artist like New Jack City, Liam Geddes and Mikki Funk, this EP offers four more firing house tracks that once again prove this label knows its business. 'Hunger' is a bulky, macho house jam with hardcore kick drums, ravey bassline stabs and crisp hi hats that drive the thing along. It's expertly produced for maximum dancefloor damage before 'Overjack' comes good with a killer bassline and reverse stabs. Baring plenty of classic hallmarks but without ever sounding tired, this raved-up house bomb kicks and squeals, ducks and dives with a great sense of energy that it is impossible to ignore. The same track gets a firing remix from Dutch duo and Slap Funk Records alumni You Know The Drill. This fun loving pair layer in even more ravey stabs, smooth out the groove and have it to bang like a heavyweight boxer for six sweaty minutes. Finally, 'Creepin in the Shadows' again nails a heavy dancefloor groove and is sure to prove an essential weapon for discerning house DJs. Lively, rubbery drums, shuffling hi hats and attitude laced vocals make for a sweaty, bulky workout that the likes of DJ Sneak will surely lap up. Across all four tracks Oli Furness lays out his muscular house vision and does so so convincingly that dance floors will not be able to resist his offerings.

2013 proved to be an excellent start to life as a label for Music Is Love. As well as truly finding their feet and establishing a breed of music representative of what the label symbolise, they simultaneously introduced us to plenty of fresh new talent and particularly pleasing was the unearthing of numerous promising UK artists. Bringing us nicely into the New Year with the label's 7th release is London-based artist Mikki Funk, who's next in-line from the MIL roster to unleash his first full EP after appearing on the MIL VA back in February. Throughout Funk's work, so far, you will find a supreme blend of US/UK garage and soulful house, and those ingredients is what makes this latest EP so essential. First up is the rhythmically unfolding house sounds of Out of My Head, with its bouncy bassline, classic 90's house piano chords and sensual female vocal building over swirling synths to give a real Balearic opening vibe to the EP. It's one for the dance floor and kicks off proceedings engagingly before Need No More maintains the pace, albeit with a deeper complexity. Spritely percussion combos drive this at a steady pace under a characteristic Funk bassline whilst deep, warped chords add greater dynamic and supersede the elements of the track. L.A's Esteban Adame - an artist with a quite prolific musical background - brings his deep, creative flair for a remix of Our Love. Chunky hand-claps and thumping kicks take precedence while scurrying hi hats race over a heavy bassline and chopped vocals as some nicely shaped synths swirl and resonate throughout. There's a fresh sense of variation with Funk's work - subtle melodies are laced with overriding house/garage sounds giving a revived take on the genres that have helped mould his style. Closing out an assured EP is Our Love, couched in the influences of classic house and built on archetypal 90's elements. Classic piano key chords and intermittent string stabs combine with an engaging female vocal as a groove-heavy bassline oscillates beneath the surface to round off the EP nicely and amplify what Mikki Funk is all about.

After serving up a vigorous taste of his garage-house approach on the highly successful Music Is Love VA earlier in the year, Jackmaster K is the latest artist from the MIL roster to continue the imprints in-house premise. With each EP the label release, they give us something different amid the infectious house they're building a reputation for. On MIL006 the Birmingham-based producer adds to the labels progressing status, with an EP that comes complete with two heavy-weight remixes from Liam Geddes and New Jack City. I Need Your Love kicks things off, a welcome reminder of Jackmaster K's affiliation toward classic sounding house. An effectively crafted vocal female sample is cut-up and diced out over a bumping bassline for the opening track, as a flourish of piano key stabs, flickering keyboard trappings, intermittent horns and tribal drum patterns are splashed over the introduction of a male vocal snippet to carry everything along nicely. Jackmaster K's penchant for introducing and weaving numerous elements of US house/garage into a track is testament to his varied style; something personified in Feelings. Swinging snares and old skool chorded pads are merged against a bouncing bassline that flows gloriously along over splashy hi-hats and punchy piano stabs. The utilisation of different female vocal hooks gives the track a 90s sounding aura - thematic of Jackmaster K's work - building into punctuating sax arrangements that filter soulfully through the track. For the B side of the EP aficionados of classic bumping house New Jack City bring the remix of the title track, dishing up their characteristically groove-heavy rhythms for another stripped-back roller. Their remix of I Need Love maintains an essence of the vocal and horn elements of the original, providing an overall tougher sounding beat. A hard-hitting, low-slung bass underlies the fore of the track while prolonged key chords and ticking hi-hats combine with a dubbed down male vocal and crowed jeers to take the track down a path of heavier house terrain. Fresh off the back of his MIL005 release and rounding off the EP in faultless fashion is Milton Keynes producer Liam Geddes. Stamping his distinctive house sound over Feelings, Geddes gives us the deepest offering of the four tracks. The drum groove and bassline are deep enough that just an intermittent vocal hook and crisp handclaps are enough to flesh out the proportions of the track. Ticking hi-hats, bass kicks and the build-up of warm key chords at the breakdown prove how effective simplicity can be in a remix, concluding yet another fine release from Music Is Love.

The prospect of a Music Is Love release has become an increasingly notable proposition for electronic music fans with their assured consistency of groove-heavy beats having already resulted in four high-grade releases. The label has effectively cemented their reputation as a trailblazing imprint for fresh sounding house and from the introduction of New Jack City through to the much hyped Maxwell, their latest rendition further emphasises their status as reliable purveyors of effortlessly deep, contemporary house. Liam Geddes comes to the foreground for MIL005 with the Milton Keynes-based producer having already provided a glimpse into his artistic foray with track Keep Coming on the VA release. He layered into his nuanced take on deep house with a stripped-back, stylish melody that oozed mature house sophistication. Following up in a similar vein Again & Over kicks off proceedings with a techno-driven rhythm ruthlessly building in stature. A cascading bassline forms the fore of the beat while industrious rattle-shakes and chord remnants of Kerri Chandler's Its You interpose momentarily in the background. As the track builds sirens grow in presence and juxtapose beautifully against a sprinkling of keys which intersect harmoniously at the breakdown while the hypnotic bass and ticking hi-hats kick back in and flow increasingly along. The opening track is a statement of deeper and darker intent from Geddes, taking a more low-key and retrospective approach. The insistent sense of energy and style manifests itself purposefully into What You Been Drinking; a more measured musical aesthetic of the LP. Prolonged key chords simmer in the background and ease the beat along against a flux of warped key chord sequences, penetrative kicks and a brooding female vocal hook which shadows the track and gives it a mysterious trippy-like feel. Wednesday Blues amplifies procedures further blending elements of Chicago/Detroit house with Dyed-esque rhythms into a satisfying whole. Coarsening in its delivery, groove-flecked harmonies, intricate percussion combinations and harmonizing key chords take the listener on a deep journey into a high-stepping house roller. The coalescing of sounds and slick transitions within the track serve to highlight the compositional stylings of his evolving musical panache and this exhibit of coolness and audible flair continues into I Got Something U Aint, a fine balance of groove and rhythm rounding off the LP in assured fashion. Bumping kicks, a subliminal bassline and deep chorded stabs maintain the pace and combine head-noddingly along against an engaging female vocal sample.
Liam Geddes' penchant for utilising deft vocal touches and heavy-hitting basslines personifies the LP and tracks are altogether formed with great dynamic range and filled with confident underground dance floor flair. Evolving a vigorous house/techno sound over the four tracks his shimmering stripped-down style lies symbiotic with MIL's approach for nurturing the freshest of talents.

Two releases, two Juno number ones- you could say that proceedings for MIL have surpassed all expectation. But then again, looking at their output so far it's hardly surprising. The impact of the label has been unanimously received as an imprint dedicated to curating fresh and original house true to the genre from some of the most hotly regarded up-and-coming producers in the electronic music scene. The forthcoming 3rd release maintains the expectation still and comes from Manchester-based Tom Maxwell, another highly anticipated producer on the UK scene who makes his first foray into the EP world. His first track featured on Jamie Trench's excellent debut EP and his most recent second release came on the equally successful MIL Lovebox VA, two finely pieced productions that served to showcase Maxwells unique take on the deeper side of house.
The coolly considered Spun EP underpins Maxwells musical perspective further and resonates with early UK and US garage with heavy 90s house influences. First track Feel Yourself delves straight into deeper territorium, a solid opening introduction of melodic intent that steadily builds with swirling synths and wood-block drumming underneath crisp hi-hats, a groove-heavy bassline and reverberant, deep chords. The utilisation of classic 90s piano rhythms grow in presence over a gospel-like vocal, handclaps and quick, shuffling rim shots at the breakdown kicking powerfully back into a head-nodding groove that rally takes the track to greater depths. Talk About's snare groove and infectious rolling bassline form the forefront of the second track. The execution of teasing Aliyah vocal flourishes are used perfectly as a glue for the beat with the RnB melodies sparsely bouncing around each other in effortlessly cool fashion. The combination of spacey-synths patterns the build up with the intuitive match of chords combining with a hypnotic bassline that instinctively flows with ease. The tile track is remixed by Dutch heavyweight Gerd, quickening the tempo in typical fashion with a more garage-fused take on the original, laying down hard-hitting drums, heavy basskicks and New Jersey hi-hats underneath chopped-up, filtered vocals and big 90s stabs which dominate and guide the track throughout to create a real roller. Maxwells version is a more deep-set vibe that swings intricately along with deep house chords meshed formidably with the timeless Happy Clappers vocal snippet. Arrays of quick garage-chimes flirt with ticking hi-hats while filtered synths swirl around in synchronisation with the bassline creating a hypnotic spun-like grove that dips in and out with it's harmonic rhythm and intimate melody. Theres plenty of quality on this latest offering from Maxwell.

A hugely promising first release from New Jack City helped established Music Is
Love as a label synonymous with deep, underground house music. Now back with
their second installment, MIL kick off the first of their 'Lovebox VA' series, a double-
vinyl release that includes tracks from 8 artists on the label. The premise of this VA
is to preview the diverse musical talent available on the roster, laying the foundations
for what listeners can expect from each artists' subsequent EPs. It's also a serious
exhibition that delves further into the visionary perspective of imprint owners Oli and
Angus. The journey through the labels acquisitions will no doubt help illuminate the
appeal of MIL as a label focused on exploring and showcasing some of the finest
talent in the underground house scene at the moment.
The EP is formulated to span the variety of influences indicative of the label's
sound, characterized by each artist's uniquely different offering. Keep Coming is an
outstanding introduction to Liam Geddes, an incredibly tight production with a heavy
bassline containing shades of Kerri Chandler fused with deep chords and swirling
synths that build and coalesce back into a straight-up groove. Maintaining the garage
tendencies, Maxwell's Need You is all about melody, rhythm and intimacy with
skittering percussion laced together with resonating, deep piano stabs and moody
bass over an accentuating R&B vocal.
There are head-nodding grooves on all tracks, stylized by cut-up vocal flourishes, shuffling hi-hats, groove-heavy basslines and inviting deep house/garage sounds. This mirage of house and garage can be heard on Banjax's Give it to me, a track that pieces tougher bass, dubbed chords and heavy bass-kicks to really compliment the soulful vocal hook. Jackmaster K quickens the tempo slightly utilizing the classic Happy Clapper's house sample anchored over sharp snares and a hacienda-like bassline to create a real Balearic 90's vibe. Tracks from JMX and Mikki Funk will capture the imagination of dance-floors all over with their uplifting, house rollers. The former is more garage tinged, fusing a looping vocal sample over sharp, organ stabs that build throughout while the latter embodies tight percussive elements interwoven with piano stabs, a female vocal and deep bass to give a nice contemporary vibe. It's no surprise that Jamie Trench's Juicy has been gaining some serious heat and earning plaudits from the likes of Ross Yallop and Richy Ahmed. This track nods increasingly to earlier influences with a rolling bassline that resonates with melodic
similarities to Omar S' Day, albeit in a more exuberant way. Swinging hi-hats and
percussive rhythms give it a hip hop-like feel, complete with a punchy vocal that
descends into stripped-back dance floor house at its finest. New Jack City pick up
from the success of their highly rated debut EP with yet another straight-up banger.
The key with these guys lies in their simplicity. They call on classic tracks of 90s
garage and New Jersey house and encapsulate what it means to be contemporary in
today's era, effortlessly embellished in Just Love It.
Oli and Angus have managed to collate and produce a collection of tracks that not
only echo but amplify the passion that they draw their influence from. The difference
in approach and outcome from each artist results in a highly impressive outcome,
with 8 effective tracks that serve as a seamless statement of purpose to how
contemporary house music should sound. It's not just about the musical aesthetic.
The artwork is handcrafted with a unique gatefold vinyl sleeve to accompany the
double vinyl release. The emphasis on extending quality in all aspects of the label
has helped create a refreshing dynamic to the label, and as so long as the label
owners pertain to their musical philosophy then no doubt we'll carry on witnessing
some of the most promising talent in underground house on MIL.

Asa Tate - Last Dance
A student of the Weatherall school of DJing, Asa Tate has showcased an astonishingly mature approach to production over the years that belies his age. You’d be forgiven for thinking these 4 tracks had been discovered from a dusty DAT tape, locked away in the vaults of a northern Italian club and rediscovered after 30 years....Listen more closely and you’ll notice the contemporary production flair and more recent influences that make this EP a perfect reinterpretation of the mid 90s house sound: sitting somewhere between dream house and Morales finest work under the red zone moniker.
The EP wastes no time in setting it’s intentions with the A1 Title Track, “Replica” - after a brief and floaty progressive house intro the refrain “ E-e-e-e-e-e-e-ECSTASY” echoes loudly over sampled vocals, euphorias piano chords, throbbing lead synths and a bouncy tech house bass line.
“89” is a sultry deep house cut featuring rising Spanish star, Dariam Coco on Vocals. It floats like a butterfly, but stings like a bee, as the soft chords are interrupted with huge drum fills deftly transforming an after party jam to a peak time moment.
We continue to “ Unknowns” - a masterclass in building tension and holding it - this track simmers with restrained intensity for almost 6 minutes. It’s trademark Asa Tate production at its most understated and classy. We round of the EP with the fittingly titled “Last Dance” , a wistful composition that brings us back down to earth slowly, safely and gently; always grooving but never pushing - this one is the soundtrack to the end of a long summer day and reaffirms Asa Tate’s claim to be a modern master of Deep House.

Info:
A DJ, producer and significant figure in contemporary electronic music, Marcel Dettmann steps forward to contribute to Running Back’s ongoing Mastermix series. Whereas previous editions of Mastermix have taken an ear to the sound of lapsed, legendary clubs such as Wild Pitch and Front, Dettmann’s curation deftly captures the man himself in ongoing perpetual motion, raiding the vault for his own precision-tooled edits, long-employed on dancefloors to devastating effect. Alongside a continuous mix, this release arrives as a 3LP gatefold, and as a limited edition cassette.
Closely associated with Berlin’s techno landscape, Dettmann was born and raised in the former GDR, then later immersed in the bleary-eyed counter cultural landscape of post-unification Berlin. Initially oriented by post-punk, industrial and new-wave music, Dettmann has been DJing since 1993, always expanding and perfecting his repertoire. He later began working behind the counter at the city’s tastemaking rave boutique Hard Wax, and a decade after he first dropped a needle, became (and remains) resident at notable local nightspot Berghain/Panorama Bar, where his instincts have helped sculpt the signature sound of both main dancefloors.
Of course, you’re probably not asking, “Who is Marcel Dettmann?” More importantly, you might want to know; just what treats has he gifted us here? The trip begins with a simple pitch-shift skywards, transforming Identified Patient’s creeping ‘The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania’ into a peak-time freakout, before an alternate take on Toctronic’s ‘Bis uns das Licht vertreibt’ emerges from the vaults for the first time. Dating from 1995, and one of Dettmann’s all-time favourites, Cristian Vogel’s ‘Untitled’ clambers back into the box with respectable cuts, while John Bender’s ‘Victims of A Victimless Crime’ kicks off the flip sporting a new arrangement, transporting us back to the foundations of a confident, stripped-back sound.
A few subtle edits to Clark’s perilously funky ‘Dirty Pixie’ takes us to Dettmann’s remix of Junior Boys. Produced in 2010, it transposes the Canadian duo’s sophisticated pop with our curator in his minimal prime, and has since become an irresistible prize for high-minded diggers. The same can be said for Experimental Products’ explosive proto-electro anthem ‘Who Is Kip Jones?’, empowered from pricey Discogs purgatory with just the slightest of tweaks. It’s deservedly sandwiched between the guiding influences of Chicago and Detroit in the form of Mutant Beat Dance’s raw ‘The Human Factor’ and a shimmering new version of previous solo production ‘Water’, featuring close friend and Ostgut Ton ally, Ryan Elliot.
The second half of the Mastermix seamlessly connects the mechanical past and digital present of EBM and industrial in the dance, with Dettmann’s instincts as a guiding hand. Severed Heads’ iconic ‘We Have Come To Bless This House’ emerges with mere nips and tucks, while Nitzer Ebb’s ‘Shame’ is significantly reimagined as a highwire act of rhythm and tension, setting up a sensual second take on a 2017 remix of ‘Limbo’ from Swiss synth heroes, Yello.
Core musical memories are shaken and stirred with a context-shifting take on Frank Duval’s emotional classic ‘Ogon’, while Ian North’s ‘Sex Lust You’ and Ford Proco’s notable Coil collaboration ‘Expansion Naranja’ effectively throb with only minor adjustments, respectfully imagined as “shadow versions”. Meanwhile, a simple breakbeat lifts Albert Kuningas’s ‘Astraalprojektio’ in the direction of wide-eyed dancefloors, while a fresh take on K-Alexi Shelby’s ‘Season of The Real’ inexplicably emerges somehow even funkier than before.
The conclusion of the compilation leads back to Das Tier from the prolific experimentalist Conrad Schnitzler, whose swirling synths and hypnotic vocals are duly tightened by Dettmann, but only as he puts it, “in conversation with the original.” Concluding three discs and thirty years of commitment to the dancefloor, this Mastermix not only offers us the opportunity to eavesdrop on this endless exchange, but to gain some sought-after material for our own record collections.

Norman Connors' Mr. C is a masterclass in sophisticated modern funk and boogie-infused soul that was way ahead of its time. Originally released in 1981, the album finds the renowned jazz drummer/producer at a creative crossroads, boldly diving deep into street-level boogie-funk without losing his soulful, jazzy touch. What once might have puzzled jazz purists now delights soul/funk aficionados; it has quietly become a cult favourite and now, nearly 45 years later, Mr. C sounds fresher than ever. Brimming with infectious heavy funk, lush arrangements and soul-stirring performances, it's an album that flirts with perfection, ensuring its enduring significance in the boogie/jazz-funk-soul canon.
From its opening moments, Mr. C makes one thing clear: this is Norman Connors at his funkiest. The majority of the album is a straight-up party: think dancefloor-ready beats complemented by punchy horn riffs and slick early-80s boogie vibes. There’s heavy use of synths and drum-machines, demonstrating Connors' gleeful embrace of contemporary funk trends. Each track shines in uniquely thrilling fashion, showcasing Connors’ versatility and happy knack for blending genres whilst crafting unforgettable melodies.
Irresistible thumper “She’s Gone” opens the album with a dyno-Rhodes electric piano groove and a seriously thick boogie-funk rhythm. Lush string accents and horn stabs weave through the funky bassline, while the vocals (handled by a young Beau Williams) soar with gospel-tinged emotion. Over four decades later, it endures as a masterpiece. Living up to its name, the shimmering “Party Town” brings deep Electro-Funk Energy by layering bubbling synth bass and shiny lead synth lines. The groove is downright addictive, a brisk, brass-kissed jam that implores you to move. Up next, the sophisticated funk of “Keep Doin’ It” is a low-slung post-disco glider, propelled by a sleek vibe, leaning into the late-night boogie sound. Funky guitar, tight drumming (with Connors’ jazz-honed chops in the pocket) and smooth vocals urge you to “keep doin'” whatever it is that's working. “Stay with Me” works a bit of island flavour into the mix, riding a thick Caribbean groove complete with tropical percussion and an upbeat tempo that could almost be calypsoul. The fusion of Caribbean rhythm elements into an R&B context demonstrates Connors’ willingness to experiment with global sounds while keeping things soulful and danceable.
Side B opens with the sassy funk-deluxe workout, "Anyway You Want" dripping with that soulful strut. Bringing a real quiet storm swagger, “Sing a Love Song” slows the tempo ever so slightly into a sexy, swaying jazz-funk gem, featuring a young Glenn Jones on lead vocals. The arrangement is elegant, built on warm keys and an undeniable groove. The celestial “Love’s In Your Corner” is all about soulful uplift. Featuring the legendary Jean Carn's powerhouse vocals soaring over a brass-kissed driving funk, it's an R&B burner. The refined, jazzy instrumental “Mr. C” is a slinky, smooth, funk-filled mid-tempo groove, with sax and warm keys gliding effortlessly. Connors combines jazzy arrangements into the post-disco/boogie framework one last time, and the result is sublime. It’s sophisticated and cool and, as a finale, “Mr. C” wraps up the album in classy style.
On release, Mr. C flew under the radar but time has been exceptionally kind to this record. DJs, collectors and soul connoisseurs alike have since rediscovered its magic. As ever, this crucial reissue has been lovingly remastered by Simon Francis, cut by engineer of the year Cicely Balston at Abbey Road Studios and pressed to perfection by Record Industry in Holland. Norman Connors was something truly extra. He was a visionary. And Mr. C is proof.

Tolouse Low Trax - Solid Rock
Tracklist
A1. Jonquera – Cause & Utility
A2. Jonquera – Tales Of Decay
B1. Tolouse Low Trax – Amp
B2. Tolouse Low Trax – Solid Rock
Info:
Avenue 66 opens Series 33 with a Düsseldorf–Lyon connection.
Jonquera first encountered Tolouse Low Trax a decade ago in a small Lyon club. That night, his hypnotic slow-motion set was cut short, yet it left a lasting imprint. The Düsseldorf artist’s mechanical psychedelia, and the influence of the Salon collective have been a constant touchstone for
Jonquera, even inspiring playful “Düsselcore” edits in his Tera Octe days.
After several LPs, Jonquera returns to the EP format with Cause & Utility / Tales of Decay. Built from improvised drum, bass, and vocal recordings, the tracks are reworked through heavy looping and acoustic treatment, a method inspired by his recent live shows. Cause & Utility revolves around the
abstract idea of two dogs as concepts, enriched by the earthy drone of a hurdy-gurdy. Tales of Decay paints a surreal image of a house losing its rooms like a body shedding parts.
The MPC sorcerer Tolouse Low Trax, aka Detlef Weinrich, brings his Düsseldorf circuitry and autobahn funk with two tracks of pure rhythm apparition. Amp is a quintessential Tolouse Low Trax cut, built on concealed rhythmic structures, swampy bass lines, and fragments of radio and voice
samples. The piece extends his exploration of how art can mirror the flow of inner-city traffic; drifting without a clear climax. Solid Rock echoes this idea, first conceived as a variation on Amp where particles repeat themselves. The result is distinct yet conceptually linked, evoking the
density of a crowded neighboring city: beginning in apparent disarray before locking into an abstract, hypnotic funk.
Series 33 begins with the convergence of Jonquera’s looping experiments and Tolouse Low Trax’s mechanical psychedelia, a dialogue between Lyon and Düsseldorf.

4. SHORT INFO:
Weaving between self-built zithers, drones, clarinets, slide guitars and drum machines, ‘Sun Arcs’ is a beautifully
unique sound offering with inventive, free spirited and DIY sensibility.
Blue Lake is the musical moniker of American born, Copenhagen based multidisciplinary artist and musician
Jason Dungan, who signs to the Tonal Union imprint for the release of his new longform album ‘Sun Arcs’. It
follows 2022’s release ‘Stikling’, earning a nomination for ‘Album of the Year’ at the Danish Music Awards plus
warm praise from The Hum blog and musicians and DJs alike including Jack Rollo (Time is Away/NTS) and Carla
dal Forno. A self taught player, Dungan began freely experimenting with self-built multi-string instruments,
preferring to build his own hybrid 48-string zither and working in the realms of left-field ambient music, off kilter
folk and improvised acoustic minimalism.
Musically it portrays a form of double life led by an American-identifying person living in Scandinavia, and a new
found presence in Denmark, seeking out underdeveloped marshlands and barren stretches of beach adrift from
other rhythms and distractions. Highlighting their individual and potent importance Dungan concludes: “Both
places feel like “me”, I think on some level the music is always some kind of self-portrait.” ‘Sun Arcs’ depicts
the intricate balance of nature’s cycles and the paths outlined by the seasons, from a winter dormancy to a warm
sun drenched scene. The album scales new glorying heights and further defines Dungan’s musical narrative,
inhabiting a unique space in left-field, improvised and experimental music, borning his most accomplished
compositions to date. A singular and visionary expression, drawing on an array of instruments and sound worlds
with a renewed sense of joy and discovery.
The album's rich tapestry was mixed by Jeff Zeigler (Laraaji, Mary Lattimore, Kurt Vile / Steve Gunn) and mastered
by Stephan Mathieu (Kali Malone, KMRU, Félicia Atkinson)

MANUEL GÖTTSCHING - Shuttlecock
LP Vinyl
Special Remarks:
Many of you will remember Manuel Göttsching by his Masterpiece "E2-E4? and know the fact it got sampled by far more than once. Think "Sueno Latino" to start with… and the plethora of further re-recordings by Derrick May, Joe Claussell, and a bootleg by Carl Craig that prove how "Now" and Iconic Manuel´s Work is. The 2006 edition "Joaquin Joe Claussell meets Manuel Göttsching" is the first attempt to bring these once illegal mixes finally to a broader and wider audience. It comes with 2 very rare and first time officially released tribute mixes of 1970´s Göttsching Classics, carefully remodeled by Joe Claussell (21.12 minute "Deeper Distance" plus 10.17 Minute "Ain´t No Time For Tears"). The last words, however, are left to MG himself, with "Shuttlecock", a final eighteen minute excursion, which has Manuel improvise over a soft carpet of delayed bell sounds, before the guitar fades away and the track deepens and thickens, like a dark river sweeping along ever more motives and harmonies. A perfectly balanced collaboration released on both CD and LP.
Consisting of 3 concert recordings which were originally released on the 6th CD Album Private Tapes : Tracks 1 und 3 were recorded at Bataclan in Paris, 12/1976, Track 2 in Berlin 8/1979

SHORT INFO:
Black Light Smoke is the electronic music moniker of Jordan Lieb - producer, songwriter, and award winning film and TV composer. A Chicago native, Jordan transplanted to New York City in 2001, where his career as a multi-disciplined musician has taken flight in many forms.
Currently residing in upstate New York, Black Light Smoke returns to Scissor and Thread for his first full length debut-album: Ghosts.
The 12 tracks (plus three digital bonus tracks) span everything from 90s house, smooth and deep soulful beats, dusty grooves and thoughtful treaties on the state of creativity, capitalism and identity.
It’s a collection that sits together as a listening experience perfectly, building peaks and sliding into serene troughs, all with a strong sense of radical thought and creative experimentation. Tracks bend and warp in unexpected directions, while gritty, distortion and overdrive counterpoint classic rave stabs and vocal samples. Taken as a whole, the album could be the soundtrack to a night drive through the city, as much as certain tracks will no doubt find themselves woven into the sets of the more leftfield and genre pushing DJs. Either way, it’s an essential release from one of the most exciting and vital producers out there and the first artist signed to Scissor and Thread back in 2011.
The album title, Ghosts, tells two stories. One is personal - an artist embracing the shadows of his past in order to move forward and complete a body of work. The second story is a search for the original meaning of house music - not just the usual sample, appropriation or casual nod to the originators of house - but a meditation on the living story of Black America in which house music is an inseparable chapter. Both stories are a reflection on grief and the transformation of trauma into celebration.
100% of Jordan Lieb’s personal proceeds from this record will go to Little Bit Foundation, empowering students living in poverty to achieve their academic goals.

Press release:
NECHTO returns with its second 12” vinyl compilation, continuing the mission of presenting forward-thinking techno from both rising talents and trusted names. Each of the six tracks adds a unique voice to the raw and honest collection.
Mecha opens the record with “All My Love”, a hypnotic debut techno track shaped by years in drum and bass. Contakt follows with “Peak Jam”, a one-take hardware jam built around the warmth of a signature synth. “16th Symphony” by Human Safari is a jazz-influenced cut intended for special moments in a DJ set. Unspent delivers “Moog Gorning”, a track that shifts from percussive 4x4 to broken rhythm, carrying deep personal emotion. ARGIE’s “Strangers” captures the tension of connection and distance with layered percussion and melody. Franz Jäger closes with “Get Simon to sync”, a rave-influenced hybrid track designed for peak-time impact.
With contributions from the UK, Poland, Malta, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden, this compilation once again highlights NECHTO’s dedication to showcasing both emerging and established artists while pushing the boundaries of modern techno.
