Two years after the release of the Polarius EP Inner Voices Of A Clown, Danny Wolfers returns to Altered Circuits, this time under his best-known alias Legowelt, for Ruins Of Cracktopolis: a collection of "hymns to survive the dystopian circus of today's techno scene" in the artist's own words. On Do You Know Who You Never Be, a short staccato lead and dark chords revolve around a monolithic kick drum pattern that takes care of the cadence and bass. A mysterious vocoder and a laser sequence that gets torn and twisted to the max join, but the track never loses its steady pace - it gets help from shakers so much mixed to the front they could be lifted from a B'more track. Amidst the effervescing 303 lines and bold drum sequences of In A Trance Dance All Night" Wolfers finds a canvas for a stretched synthesizer jam with eighties breaking allure. This melody, together with the pads and vocal, are drenched in reverb - they float like mist ascending from the The Hague dunes. Throughout Ruins Of Cracktopolis, more vintage Dutch West Coast, the hiss-laden broken beat that guides the bass sequences and ominous blippy synth patterns switches to a 4/4 structure and back. These make for captivating shifts in pace while the minor progressions continue unfolding. Like Twin Peaks targets prime energy once the arpeggiator sequence present from the start lowers an octave. The track runs smooth like a pomade slick-back; it's only tempered slightly when the crunchy kick and tom change place for a moody chord sequence break. Even if these four tracks target the club, they are equally suited for - quoting Wolfers again - "leisurely home listening". Their greatest strengths are, as so often, their melodic aspects. The artist is known to be a synthesizer aficionado, but his unique personal touch immediately shines through no matter which gear he works with. The machines never seem to dominate the composing process; quite the opposite: it's as if he isn't programming or registering as much as trying to teach them his take on electronic music. More

New album by the irrepressible Dutchman... The '2080' part of the album title is taken from the Roland JV2080, a legendary digital synthesizer from the nineties that was used a lot in the making of the album. Bought second-hand in Tokyo for a couple of hundred dollars, it lends the record a very dewy eyed soul, whilst the 'Crystal' part of the title stands for the self-made 'DIY germanium crystal compressor' Legowelt used throughout the writing process. The album itself features ten new tracks of pure Legowelt music mainly recorded in De Hague in the past year, but also on the road during tours of LA, the Californian desert, Tokyo (which spawned 'Crystal Cult 2080') and Tejada Gran Canaria (where 'The Future of Myself' was written.) Where his last album The Paranormal Soul was an organic trip into misty forests, this one seems more concerned with medieval spirits; it's deeper, darker and the whole thing is tied together by a more coherent sense of ancient alchemy. Gi ven the use of a DIY germanium crystal compressor during production, it's no wonder everything feels warm, fuzzy and mystic in a way that draws your attention in like that fabled philosopher's stone... glare too long and you might just turn to stone. Right from the opening track the mood is so encapsulating you are drawn right into Danny Wolfers' mysterious electronic world. From there various different tempos are explored and plenty of famed synthesiser work comes to the fore, wrapping grooves in trippy themes, impish spirits and plenty of organic lushness.

Dutch producer Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt needs little introduction unless you’ve spent the past two decades buried beneath a Mont Blanc avalanche. His enormous collection of synthesizers, as well as his unwavering love for analogue production tools, justifiably places him in the synth music “Hall of Fame”. Since releasing his first material in the early 1990s, Legowelt has incessantly produced music and continues to display seemingly limitless creativity. As a result he has built an unparalleled discography that also includes an assortment of artist aliases.

During these days where lo-fi analogue house productions seems to be the it thing, its time to dig out a release by one of the true pioneers of house music. Not an outsider but one of the names thats been around forever and thats known for several timeless house classics. Almost 20 years after its original release date we are happy to share this forgotten and overlooked gem by Roy Davis Jr. - Roy's Chicago Basement Traxx. Originally released as 4 track ep on Kumba Records, but we thought it was appropriate to shine some light on our three favorites, Chemical Warfare, Jack Da Rhythms and Broken Machines. Three dirty, raw, jacking and most of all intense tracks, that are among the best things that came out of Chicago. Jerking rhythms, hypnotic synths and live arrangements stripped to the bare essential! Endless respect to Roy Davis Jr. for being such a versatile and inspirational producer. Oh and this one is not changing hands for big money (which we see so often as sales argu ment). Untill recently it actually always used to be pretty cheap on Discogs ps. we thought of releasing this on Clone Classic Cuts, but this is what the word Jack is about... and despite the Basement in the title, our Clone Jack For Daze series dedicated to Chicago inspired tracks seems the only appropriate place for this!
