Mermaids return to the sacred black wax after a five year break. It appears to have been time well spent, as their sound has matured into a rhythmic, expansive feast.

Coming on like a psychotropic, hallucinatory distillation of their anything-goes More Ritual show on Netil Radio, this action-packed EP is an evocative, cosmic journey that defies classification. There are sprinkles of deep house, disco and bass with a tropical, outward looking feel.

Opening track Crystal Eyes patiently broods it’s way up the energy ladder, winding around birdsong, field recordings, flamenco guitars and ear-worm grade drum patterns that grow into a propulsive, bass-driven finale.

Find The Light merges a driving a low-end with plaintive keys and sparkling percussion; high-energy dreamer music for weary-legged dancers.

The B-side kicks the mission off into a voodoo state with Raising The Altar; a mysterious and intrepid slo-mo juggernaut that carries the listener through a shamanic odyssey with enough sway to topple a pyramid.

Gilded Key closes the set with an uplifting, strings and percussion drenched groover that will leave you grinning widely, still drenched in the steam-heat of the ritual.

Mermaids are a band from Glasgow who've previously released their own blend of live, slow-burning disco on labels like Foto, A Friend In Need & Non Local and supported the likes of Errors, The Field and theeSatisfaction. Their debut EP for Glasgow Underground carries on this super-cool disco aesthetic but, crucially, adds in one ABSOLUTELY ENORMOUS TUNE. "Who's That Girl" is a summer anthem waiting to happen. Glasgow based MermaidS have been quietly making waves since 2011 with an infectious blend of choppy edit-style punchers and slow morphing body music. The duo have already had releases on their own eponymous imprint as well as Nonlocal out of Canada, but made their biggest splash on Ali Ooft's recent FOTO Recordings' sampler EP Four's A Crowd. Their contribution 'Run With The Night' easily stole the show on the release and made its way into many well respected record bags including Roberto Rodriguez, Ben La Desh, Andy Ash, Martin Hayes of Rose Records and the always on point Sleazy Beats gents. The tides are steadily turning in their favour and have carried them to Young Adults for their finest material yet. The Handsome Stranger EP kicks off with 'Cherry Cola', a looped-up thumper that builds on perfectly paced vocal refrains until it crescendos and blasts an unforgettable horn all the way home. 'Signal' revs up gradually and gains momentum with ease, displaying MermaidS' keen ability to chug with the best of em.
