Local Action kick off 2012 with a pair of vinyl-only tracks by DJ Q, including the massively hyped ‘Brandy & Coke’. Q’s a regular DJ on London’s Radio 1xtra, a legend in the UK’s bassline house scene, and his remix of Wooo Riddim (released on Butterz last year) is one of the best grime tracks of recent years. Here he proves that he can make garage with a million times more swing and soul than all that future garage / post-dubstep stuff going around – basically, he’s the real deal. Comes packaged on heavyweight red vinyl in a clear plastic sleeve with sticker. Early support from Brenmar, Sinden, Scratcha DVA, Mixmag, Brodinski and those that know.

Jennifer Walton - The Only Way Is Through
Local Action is proud to present Daughters, the debut album by Jennifer Walton. Walton is a beloved figure across various sectors of the alternative music underground. Outside of her own music and soundtrack work, she has been a live drummer for Kero Kero Bonito, collaborates with Sarah Midori Perry on the pair’s Cryalot project, has remixed Metronomy and worked with Iceboy Violet, BABii and more. She also makes music and DJs with close friends aya and 96 Back under the name Microplastics, and recently contributed to London collective caroline’s acclaimed caroline 2 album. The first seeds of Walton’s debut album were sowed during touring North America in 2018, where whilst ticking off life-long music goals, Walton’s father was dying of cancer. Grief is a constant presence throughout Daughters, and specifically the surreal nature of having to process it amongst a blur of airports, flight connections, hotel rooms and battles for stolen medication with the American healthcare system. Strip malls, drug deals, panic attacks; the artificiality of downtown American city districts dovetailing with reality in its most brutal form. Miss America for a day while life is changed forever. Weaving between real life diary entries, travelogue-style storytelling, imagery that ranges from mechanical to religious and a scattering of fiction (though we are obliged to mention that ‘Shelly’ is based on a true story), Daughters climaxes with the staggering run of ‘Saints’, ‘Miss America’ and its title track. Sampling unattended machines harmonising bleeps into the void in a London hospital ward, ‘Saints’ narrates Walton taking her father to and from cancer research trials, “sat, hunched and sick in the concourse as minutes became hours”. And to be very real for a moment, Jen is a friend, and first hearing the ‘Miss America’ demo is up there with the most emotional moments we’ve had in 15 years of running this record label. Finished in London across the second half of 2024, Daughters features musical contributions from some of the closest friends and collaborators that Walton has made in her time as a musician: aya (who also mixed the album), Daniel S. Evans, Joshua Barfood and Nick Granata (all of Shovel Dance), Alex McKenzie (of caroline and Shovel Dance), Aga Ujma and Bob Lockwood.

Local Action is proud to present Cyclorama, the long-awaited debut album by Ariel Zetina. A resident DJ at Chicago’s iconic Smartbar, a long-standing Discwoman family member and a key part of the city’s dance music and LGBTQ+ communities, Ariel has established herself as one of the most exciting electronic artists operating today - through releases such as 2020’s acclaimed MUAs at the End of the World and 2017’s Organism, and her meticulous approach to DJ mixes - as recently evidenced on Sestina, her 2020 contribution to Mixtape Club. Written across 2021 and honed this Spring, Cyclorama is Ariel’s most impressive and all-encompassing work yet, showcasing her as a producer, vocalist and also curator, pulling together an ensemble cast of her peers in Chicago (Cae Monae, Mia Arevalo, DANNN) and some of the most exciting names in contemporary club music (Violet, Bored Lord). Conceptually, Cyclorama draws heavily from Ariel’s background as a theater writer and producer. Popularized in 19th century German theater, a cyclorama (or cyc) is a large curtain, placed on the back wall of the stage. This creates an illusion of extra depth in the background, and often is used to represent the sky. In Ariel’s words, “I imagine all the tracks on this as the lights and action projected onto the cyclorama. The whole album is like the cyc, a representation of the sky. Or an imagined sky. An imagined dancefloor. An imagined theatrical production.” As well as drawing conceptually from Ariel’s background in theater, the album draws on a personal level from Ariel’s journey as a trans woman of color - most directly on Cyclorama’s three vocal tracks, ‘Gemstone’, ‘Slab of Meat’ and lead single ‘Have You Ever’.

Local Action’s first single of 2013 comes from DJ Q. It’s Q’s second release on the label, following the vinyl-only, instantly sold-out ‘Brandy & Coke’, and marks the first taste of his forthcoming debut album. Q’s been a legend to those in the know for almost a decade: his past single ‘U Wot’ was one of the biggest tracks to ever come out of the UK’s bassline house / Niche explosion, and his BBC Radio 1xtra show was a must-listen for UK dance music fans. His recent productions (on Local Action, Unknown to the Unknown, Butterz and more) showcase a producer at the top of his game, able to turn his hands to grime, garage, pop and more, and ‘Trust Again’, a collaboration with Brit School alumnus Louise Williams is vocal 2-step made to perfection. ‘Trust Again’ features the first vinyl remix in several years by Karl ‘Tuff Enuff’ Brown, one half of the legendary UK garage unit Tuff Jam – check Oneman’s Fabric CD or Ben UFO’s all-vinyl session for RBMA to see how their influence is still felt today. Remixes also come from DJ Q (4x4 remix) and a shredding take by bassline house heavyweight TS7.

Local Action’s biggest track to date (US iTunes’ #3 dance track of 2010) gets the remix treatment courtesy of none other than Paul Woolford. Simple story behind this single: we woke up one morning to an email from Woolford, one of the most celebrated house producers of the last decade for his work on labels like Cocoon, 20:20 and his own Intimacy imprint, saying he loved ‘Heartbeat’ and wanted to remix it. We sent him the stems, and he sent us this straight back – an impeccably produced overhaul of the original that starts with subtle, skippy additions before flipping full-force into a bottom-heavy synth jam, completely bringing out the original’s dark underbelly. We’re really excited to be releasing it. The original vinyl release of ‘Heartbeat’ didn’t feature the instrumental, so after four months of people asking us where to get it, we thought we’d tuck it on the B-side of this release. The artwork is a twist on white label culture that continues to inspire Local Action, with black and white centre-sticker artwork and a thick, grey sleeve.
