The third Sources package comes from one perhaps one of the most radical of the New York underground independent labels in several different areas – Avant-Garde, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap and Freestyle, so welcome to the one and only Sleeping Bag Records from New York. Founded in 1981 by the Avante-Garde musician Arthur Russell together with Will Socolov and Juggy Gayles, the label kicked off with the seminal “Go Bang!” by Dinosaur L aka Arthur Russell and quickly established itself with further dancefloor smashes from Class Action, the Jamaica Girls and Konk among others. However undoubtedly one of Sleeping Bag’s most significant signings would turn out to be producer extraordinaire Kurtis Mantronik, who, with rapper MC Tee under the name Mantronix, would produce many of the most cutting-edge Hip-Hip/Rap and Electro classics of the 1980s including “Needle To The Groove”, “Ladies”, “Bassline” and “Who Is It”, all of which are included here as well as producing a brace of international smash hits for Joyce Sims including the electro-funk masterpiece “(You Are My) All & All” and the super-slinky “Come Into My Life”. Sleeping Bag would remain at the forefront of dance music culture with numerous other significant dance-floor smashes from the likes of Tricky Tee, Felix, Nocera, Dhar Braxton and Kariya’s brilliant “Let Me Love For Tonight” among many others. In many ways Sleeping Bag exemplified the perfect New York independent label of the 1980s with its shrewd A&R philosophy and an interesting balance of staff who were divided between old music industry veterans together with a brace of young keen new inductees who kept the label close to the streets – a winning combination all round. Out of all the labels featured in the Sources series, Sleeping Bag was the most consistently successful in its era and was undoubtedly the label which was the most hardwired into the sensibilities of the times. This is the most comprehensive anthology available of one of the greatest independent record labels of the 1980s.

The fourth package in the Sources series covers one of the most loved New York independent record labels ever, the iconic Sam Records. Formed by industry veteran Sam Weiss in 1975, the label launched with a the killer atmospheric funk anthem “Woman Of The Ghetto” by Doris Duke before heading into Disco territory with several hugely successful albums from John Davis & The Monster Orchestra before hitting big internationally with a brace of Disco smashes from Gary’s Gang including their most successful single “Keep On Dancing”. By the beginning of the 1980s Sam managed to deftly circumnavigate the Disco backlash and re-invent themselves as a bona-fide 80s Dance label immediately scoring with Rhyze’s “Just How Sweet Is Your Love”, Convertion’s “Let’s Do It”, Scandal’s “Just Let Me Dance”, K.I.D.’s “Don’t Stop” and Mike & Brenda Sutton’s “We’ll Make It” among others. This proved to be a fortuitous direction and by the end of 1982 Sam had scored high-profile successes with Vicky ‘D’’s “This Beat Is Mine”, Komiko’s “Feel Alright”, The Evasion’s “Wikka Wrap”, K.I.D.’s “Hupendi Muziki Wangu?! (You Don’t Like My Music)” and the sumptuous “Dreaming” by Greg Henderson. Sam’s impressive dance hit tally continued into 1983 with further successes like Steve Shelto’s pumping “Don’t Give Your Love Away” and Klassique’s “Somebody’s Loving You” before the label wound down for much of the next decade. Over the ensuing 30+ years Sam’s 70s and 80s releases have seldom been off DJs turntables whether via the Disco, Rare- Groove and Electro scenes or by the almost relentless re-edits that appear of Sam’s main output throughout this period. ‘Sources: The Sam Records Anthology’ continues the run of comprehensive anthologies of the most important labels in the evolution of Dance music.

Sources is a brand new series which will examine the output of a number of extremely influential independent U.S. labels throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.Bill Brewster, co-founder of the influential DJ History website and forum and author of the acclaimed “Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life” will be compiling and writing the sleeve notes for the series. The first six releases will concentrate on 6 New York independent labels which have each been massively influential in the evolvement of Dance Music over the last 30+ years – Easy Street, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Sam, Streetwise and P&P. Each package will be full of lovingly re-mastered original 12” mixes as selected by Bill. You can be sure that a variety of ‘secret weapons’ will emerge from each of these packages! The first Sources package comes from one of the most consistent underground dance labels in history – East Street Records from New York. Easy Street hit the ground running in the early 1980s with the uptempo break dancing gem, Hot Streak’s “Body Work”. However, the real story of Easy Street was their consistent ability to gauge the mood of the dance-floor with numerous HUGE underground classics which read like a who’s who of dance music history over the last 3 decades - Paul Simpson, Todd Terry and Blaze are just a handful of the names which have graced the Easy Street label over the years. The underground hits poured out relentlessly – “Main Thing”, “Share The Night”, “Ma Foom Bey”, “You Don’t Know”, “Treat Her Sweeter”, “Saturdays” and “Deeper” to name a handful, all of which are included on here. An essential package for anyone who wants to re-experience the culture of the New York dancefloors throughout the last three decades via one of the hippest labels in dance music history. Easy Street Records we salute you in style!

Steve Poindexter presents Kareem Smith - To The Motherland
Sampler 1 includes select tracks taken from Terry Farley's recent Chicago Acid House retrospective for Harmless. These samplers are geared towards the DJ's and vinyl lovers who may have missed these tracks first time around or to the new fans who have just discovered the windy city's own unique brand of machine funk and want to dig deeper! This sampler features DJ Rush's "Lookin' For Excitement", a frantic, snaking jack track of the highest order, one for the slam dancers - watch out for those snare drums! Also featured is Terrance McDonald's "Mind Over Matter", a deep, rolling electronic workout with building, epic synth lines and a jagged bassline that won't quit. Rounding out the EP in fine style is "To The Motherland", a tribal-esque percussion heavy cut from Steve Poindexter and Kareem Smith from '88. An excellent addition to any seasoned House fans record bag, or the perfect starting point for those who are new to the genre, "Acid Thunder Sampler 1" contains rare and out of print tracks carefully selected and re-mastered for maximum effect.

2010 marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most significant labels in Dance Music history - Trax Records from Chicago - the label behind the birth of Chicago House Music from the mid 1980s onwards. Since the label has never had any significant remix or re-edit projects through the course of its life we thought we’d do one! And who better to oversee the project then the world’s most influential and significant DJ Forum - DJ History. Trax 25 Vs DJ History is a compilation featuring 24 of Trax Records’ most in-demand tracks which have received significant re-edits from the contributors to DJ History including some of the most gifted Re-Edit experts in the world. The final track-listing will be selected by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton (also co-authors of “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” and “The Record Players”) and will be released to celebrate the label’s 25 years of influence upon the Dance Music world. The level and quality of the entries has been phenomenal with lots of well-known names from the DJ History forum all taking part including Disco Bloodbath, Greg Wilson, Leo Zero, Neville Watson, Ray Mang and many other names from the mysterious underground of Re-Edit culture. We believe that this is the first time that anyone has attempted such a project via public internet forum and gone forward with a physical release, so we will be really ramping up the PR and Promotion with this release! Following the success of the “Disco Discharge” series, “Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes” and the anticipated reaction to the forthcoming “Jumpin’” we will be embarking on a massive PR campaign which will include some mini-documentaries for You Tube, Blogs and Forums plus some national TV appearances from Bill and Frank, together with some of the contributors.
