The timeless classic that is Energy 52's 'Cafe Del Mar', first released in 1993, has been rejuvenated and re-invented with 2 brand new remixes from Germany's leading beat scientist Ricardo Villalobos.
Mysterious like a deserted bay at midnight, and blissful like the balmy white sands of ibiza's hidden beaches, Ricardo's main mix snakes and meanders over 9 minutes of pure minimalist magic. Filtering and reducing the original's main theme and bass pattern, a purely electronic interpretation is formed with ultra deep kick drums, and silky, woody textured percussion.
Two mixes are included here; Ricardo's main remix introduces the main synth theme, bubbling teasingly throughout. The dub mix focuses on the pulsing bassline, while gentle and subtle harmonic elements float underneath the warm staccato beats. Ricardo Villalobos is surely one of the heroes of the modern electronic world, so it's a rather special moment indeed when he has a chance to remix one of the shining dance classics of the 90s.
Tracklisting:
A. Cafe Del Mar (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
B. Cafe Del Mar (Ricardo Villalobos Dub)

Energy 52's Café Del Mar is one of the most iconic tracks in dance music. Over the years, Café Del Mar has achieved legendary status, regularly featuring in lists of the greatest dance tracks of all time. To put it simply, Café Del Mar is a cultural phenomenon, encapsulating the spirit of an era and influencing generations of artists and fans alike.
Now this iconic track is being remixed by two of the most revered acts in electronic music, Orbital and Michael Mayer. Orbital, the pioneering British electronic dance duo consisting of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, have continued to shape the electronic music scene since their emergence in 1989. Their remix is an ode to the golden age of rave, with clattering breakbeats and an ethereal synth line pulsing through its early stages before the iconic lead warps into view. A key figure in Cologne's electronic scene, Michael Mayer co-founded the influential Kompakt label, contributing significantly to its direction and success. For his interpretation, Mayer leans into head spinning, hypnotic rhythms, with tribal drums and the patiently evolving lead line building towards a climax that is more subtle but no less effective.

SHORT INFO:
Energy 52’s Café Del Mar has come to represent the most euphoric and hedonistic pleasures of dancefloors - in Ibiza and all around the world - and has been remixed by some of the biggest names in electronic music. Known for its infectious melody and its strong impact on dancefloors around the globe it charted multiple times around the world and won countless awards. Now, 30 years after its first original release, Superstition Records issues a new series of releases, with brand new remixes as well as some of the many remixes from across the last three decades.
The third part in the series features remixes by Tale Of Us and Paul van Dyk, some of the most prolific electronic producers and DJs. First up are Tale Of Us, one of the biggest names on the dance circuit of the moment. Their “Renaissance Remix” was first released in 2018 and has already become one of the most popular remixes of Café Del Mar.
DJ Kid Paul and Paul van Dyk were close DJ buddies in the early Berlin Techno scene, and played around a hundred DJ gigs together, all around Germany and Europe, before they moved on in different directions. Now nearly 30 years later Paul van Dyk finally got the chance to remix the iconic Café del Mar. His XOXO remix slows the tempo slightly and employs crisp percussion and deep, pulsing bass while still maintaining the out-and-out exhilaration of that epic breakdown. Originally released in 2021, the Paul van Dyk remix appears here on vinyl for the first time.

Next year the iconic anthem Cafe Del Mar will celebrate its 30th anniversary, a landmark that will be celebrated with a series of brand new remixes alongside the finest existing remixes in specially remastered versions. Launching the series of vinyl releases in September is a remastered vinyl-only release of the original mix, as well as the best-known version of this classic track, the iconic Three ‘N One Remix.
Nearly 30 years ago, Paul M aka DJ Kid Paul recording as Energy 52 unleashed a record onto an unsuspecting public that would go on to define club culture for an entire generation of dance music enthusiasts. Named as an homage to the legendary Ibiza sunset spot, Café Del Mar broke down boundaries between the underground and the mainstream, charting in the UK singles charts on three separate occasions and named as the “best tune ever” by Mixmag at the start of the new millennium. In terms of cultural and emotional impact in dance music, it’s hard to find a record that comes close.

Flying Circus Music, returns with it‘s second release, this time rocking the deep, extended, dramatic house vibes of Radio Slave‘s interpretations of Humate‘s Love Stimulation. The new ‚Berliner‘ Matt Edwards took his popularity from underground to overground, and right back round again. The world-travelling DJ founded his solid, big room production style while his infamous bootleg and remix work was a mainstay of the UK electronic scene. Now, with the strength of his Rekids label and his unmistakable production approach, he re-works this early classic of german techno/trance ‚Love Stimulation‘ into two remarkable slow burning epics. The ‚Full Length Vox Remix‘ builds from very opening bars, carefully combining classic house sensibilities with a totally free and organic, long flowing arrangement. At over 15 minutes, its a heavy weight tool for those late, hedonistic hours! Carrying on the blissed out theme, we‘re also treated to a ‚Panorama Garage Remix‘, that bears a more raw, jacking house vibe, with its straight up beats and deeply-swung chord stabs. Radio Slave is a master at keeping things ear-tinglingly stripped, yet still filling the room with power, energy and tension. These two remixes certainly pay their dues to classic days gone by, but they also stand out as superb examples of the modern state of house. Judging by this release it‘sstill as strong as it ever was!!

„From a time when there were few „rules“ in the production of dance music, this track combines all sorts of elements that were heard in the music of the time. Subtle use of a sampled breakbeat, layered over the deep pulsing kick, give the track an irresistible energy on the dancefloor. This carries the listener while the gorgeous heavy atmospherics completely entrance them. The use of a simplistic single hit piano line at a couple of points could put the integrity of the track in jeopardy, but it‘s not so cheesy and lasts for a short enough time that once the deepness kicks back in it just forms a strange memory, like passing lights leaving a fading trace on the retina. At the track‘s climax the „drainpipe“ sounds rise up again, and are for a few seconds enveloped in one of the most intensely beautiful synth washes I‘ve ever heard. You want that moment to last forever, but as quickly as you have been lifted up, you are dropped straight back into the beat, and that snappy break sample sets you off again.“ (max duley @ discogs.com)The track "Mad Monks On Zinc" has been on Tobias Lampe‘s memory of a glorious clubnight in the very early 90‘s at the legendary "Planet" in Berlin. When Sven Väth played out this track he was freaking out on the dancefloor, but asking Sven for the track's name didn't lead to success, as Sven pointed on the record with a grin: the 12" only had a big question mark on it!Finally Tobias got a copy of that record during one of his regular record-huntings in Soho, but it wasn‘t until 1999 when he finally
discovered the actual artist & title. At this time Holy Ghost Inc. were better known for true splendid Techno with releases on e.g. Berlin‘s Tresor label than for their early 90‘s releases, when „cutting edge DJs like Andrew Weatherall were pioneering the Holy
Ghost Inc.‘s "Mad Monks On Zinc", the fourth and best in a series of deeply underground, eclectic EPs“ (Mixmaster Morris in Mixmag 1992).Now, almost 16 years after the original release on their own "Holy Ghost Inc." imprint "Mad Monks On Zinc" is reborn in company of two fantastic interpretations by Adultnapper and Martin Buttrich....just at the right time !
