A DVD flashback of early 80s Berlin Subculture, featuring output by virtuosos of the city's underground movie scene, who rediscovered Super8 as an adequate outlet for their creative endeavours. Accompanied by a compilation of music, covering a huge range of styles and currents - from punk to ingenious dilettantes - this lavish package recalls the walled-in city's unique feel and lifestyle. By no means a nostalgic review of times long gone, this is, rather, an appraisal (with no claim to completeness) of a creative Berlin which to this day exerts its influence on German pop culture and beyond. Beside the DVD featuring 18 elaborately restored Super8 films (running time: 120 minutes), the luxurious package also contains a CD compilation of Berlin bands from the period of '78-'84, as well as a 100 page book with extensive material: lyrics by Dietrich Kuhlbrodt, Martin Schmitz, Rolf S. Wolkenstein, essays, background information, discographies and photo series plus interview with Wolfg ang Müller (of Die Tödliche Doris). CD & Films contents music by: - Einstürzende Neubauten - Die tödliche Doris - Malaria - Kosmonautentraum - Flucht nach Vorn - Christiane F. - Mona Mur - Alexander von Borsig - Sprung aus den Wolken - Die Unbekannten - La Loora - P1/E - Valie Export & Ingrid Wiener - Notorische Reflexe - DIN A Testbild - Frieder Butzmann - Sentimentale Jugend - MDK - Mono/45

Mark Stewart first made his presence felt as the front man for The Pop Group in the late 1970's. They were pioneers of the post punk dance sound and had success with singles such as 'She is beyond good and evil', and 'We are all prostitutes'. When the band split in 1980, Mark joined the emerging On U Sound crew as a part time member of The New Age Steppers. He then went on to form his own band with Keith LeBlanc and Doug Wimbish, the rhythm section of the Sugar Hill Gang, and guitarist Skip McDonald. With Adrian Sherwood and his production magic at the controls, The Maffia unleashed an awesome mix of styles that sounded like Bootsy Collins jamming over a bootleg Jah Shaka tape in an urban warzone. This incredible mix of funk, dub and electronic overload pre empted Techno and Drum & Bass by years. Mark Stewart, often copied, never bettered.
The film retraces the singer's steps and paths from the early days of The Pop Group right up to the present. Schifer, who followed Mark around for a full 3 years, has crafted a detailed, often intimate portrait of the artist, supplemented by interviews with a. o. Mark Stewart himself, Adrian Sherwood (On.U Sound), Daniel Miller (Mute Records), Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald, Keith LeBlanc, Douglas Hart (The Jesus & Mary Chain), Fritz Catlin (23 Skidoo), Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), Gareth Sager (The Pop Group, Rip Rig and Panic), Dan Catsis (The Pop Group), John Waddington (The Pop Group) Janine Rainforth (Maximum Joy), Massive Attack, Keith Levine (P.I.L.) and many others, plus never seen live recordings and music clips. Schlingensiefs Container
FOREIGNERS OUT! SCHLINGENSIEF'S CONTAINER
Austria 2002, 90 min., DV, full-length documentary by Paul Poet
lim.edition including container cutout model (also available separately)
FOREIGNERS OUT! SCHLINGENSIEF’S CONTAINER (O.T.: AUSLÄNDER RAUS! SCHLINGENSIEFS CONTAINER) is a thrilling and revealing, funny yet frightening chronicle and deliberation of one of the biggest public acts of tongue-in-cheek art terrorism in the age of multimedia.
Austria 2000: At the general election, Jörg Haider’s FPÖ had met with widespread approval – and for the first time since WW2 a party of the extreme right joined the government. Never slow to react, infamous German director Christoph Schlingensief soon retaliated with an extraordinary form of protest.
As a tangible satire on xenophobia, Big Brother madness and new nationalism Schlingensief decided to stage an interactive concentration camp – right at the heart of Vienna’s picturesque tourist centre.
And Austria just freaked – soon there were thousands of screaming people on site and almost a million connected worldwide via the Internet. Knife attacks. Punch-ups. Political intrigues. An incredibly heated week that captured the European drift to the right in real time. A hardcore route to democracy.
WINNER REMI AWARD APRIL 2003 AT THE HOUSTON WORLDFEST (CATEGORY: FILM & VIDEO PRODUCTION, ECONOMIC/SOCIAL ISSUES)
WINNER IMAGES FILM FESTIVAL FOR INNOVATIVE BORDERLINE CINEMA
BEST INTERNATIONAL VIDEO 2004, TORONTO / CANADA
OFFICIAL FESTIVAL SELECTION ROTTERDAM 2003, MAR DEL PLATA 2003, BRISBANE 2003
“Truly stimulating” (Le Monde)
“Furious and drop dead funny” (Rheinische Post)
“(In his work) Schlingensief has managed to translate the intrinsic meaning of film far beyond the actual screen. Under this consideration it comes as a big, but by no means unpleasant surprise as to how much Paul Poet’s film version of this event is a real “movie”. Instead of simply relying on an “authentic” touch, it constantly froths with an artistic life of its own. (…) Poet has retranslated Schlingensief’s happening into a piece of art that imparts the “action” and itself with inherent and perennial relevance. (Leading German film critic Georg Seeßlen / EPD)

"Die letzte Rache" narrates the eventful tale of the Worldly, an adventurer who enters the service of an ageing ruler in order to seek for him a successor. Unable to find a worthy heir, the Worldly succumbs to the temptation to seize power himself. The ruler, however, thwarts his plan and uses the Worldly, by means of a scientific experiment, to attain immortality. The Worldly wreaks vengeance by laying the ruler's kingdom to waste – thereby preparing the ground for unforeseen intrigue: the ruler's son and daughter, united in incestuous love, take revenge for the inheritance denied them by subjecting their now immortal father to everlasting pain and suffering.
First broadcast in 1982 on West Germany's second TV channel (ZDF) "Die letzte Rache" rapidly achieved cult status amongst film connoisseurs throughout Europe, Japan and the USA. Even in the more than twenty years following its first showing, this film has continued to attract audiences, with repeated performances in art-house cinemas. Its exceptional blend of expressionist character drama, comic strip, film noir and pop musical ensures that Rainer Kirberg's début film remains to this day a stylistically unparalleled work in the annals of German cinematography.
The original film material having undergone elaborate audio and video remastering, "Die letzte Rache" in this DVD edition appears in a new director's cut with additional film music by "Der Plan", a German avant-garde group that was renowned in its day.
"Die letzte Rache" is the first Rainer Kirberg DVD to be issued by Monitorpop. This will be followed up in the autumn by a 2DVD featuring "Der Grottenolm" and "Schatten im Zenit", including photo galleries, an interview with Rainer Kirberg as well as a selection of his short films and video clips.

MPS/SABA – A brief history of a pioneering jazz label
The Label MPS (for Musik- Produktion Schwarzwald) is known as the German „Blue Note“. The label was established by producer and music enthusiast Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (also named HGBS) from 1968 in Villingen. After he left the SABA enterprise, he made high class jazz productions in a wide variety. Till the 1980s, over 600 jazz vinyls were released in the whole spectrum from traditional Jazz to Free Jazz and Bossa Nova. For many german jazz musicians like Albert Mangelsdorff or Wolfgang Dauner, their career starts with the music recordings from Villingen.
Many famous international jazz musicians have also released on MPS. To name only a few, there are recordings from Oscar Peterson, George Duke, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie.
Elke Baurs documentary „MPS- Jazzin the Black forest“ is an affectionate portrait of the label and his founder HGBS. Interviews with many musicians and former colleagues and rare live documents revive a jazz era and the „Most Perfect Sound“.

“Enjoy each minute, while it casts its ray! Spring runs its course, love fades away”, according to German poet -Emanuel Geibel. Now, 200 years later, the era of digital archives allows us to bring back and savour the odd minute or two. And this is where we come in. The Berlin-based DVD label Monitorpop specialises in unconventional artists and themes beyond the mainstream, a.o. a retrospective on Berlin’s early 80s underground scene Berlin Super 80 or cult films by NY director Amos Kollek.
This compilation assembles a range of talents who pursue their very own, often radical and inevitably, idiosyncratic paths. Among them: Viennese artist Hermann Nitsch, photographer Miron Zownir, musician Matthew Herbert, Mark Stewart, founder of the legendary punk-funk band THE POP GROUP and performance artist Leigh Bowery. All interviews are exclusive to this compilation and the videos or slide shows feature rare, unearthed treasures not to be seen on daily television – stimulating distractions for all lovers of eclectic entertainment. Stay curious!
