The Coastal Commission “On the Rocks”

Atmospheric synths with a deep rolling Dubby Bassline beckon you to the dancefloor.
The staccato 606 drum machine snare hits snap over the track before a monster kick
drum comes thumping out of the speakers.
“On the Rocks” has served as a killer intro track by many International Dj’s including
Grant Dell who recently opened with it in Los Angeles for “Sunday Sessions”.
A big tune in South America and in particular in São Paulo, Brazil it serves as a great
mood builder for Dj’s looking to captivate their audience right off the bat.
The Coastal Commission literally tuned the Arp Odyssey Bassline to shake down the
walls, ceiling and floor while making this track. Always a massive fan of Night writers
(RIP) “Push the Feeling on” Sam read an interview where they revealed that they wrote
the B-line using a Sequencial Circuits “Arp Odyssey” and that sent him on a mission to
track one down. He eventually found one covered in dust in the back of a thrift shop in
Santa Barbara for $50! (They now go for bout 3K). Excitedly Sam rushed it home to the
studio to clean it up & after some playing around the Bassline was found and the other
elements were built around that.
The track finally breaks down to a beautiful jazz trumpet with muffled voices
conversating in the background saying “Yeah that was Funky!” releasing the tension
before building the strings back up with the vocal “Come on” commanding you to keep
dancing.
“On the Rocks” is hailed as a Modern Deep House Classic by fans and definitely one
that will stay in your record box.
Jesse Outlaw feat. Jason Harris “I’m Underground”
Jesse pens another hypnotic slab of awesome West Coast dance floor tech funk
alongside Jason’s Harris on vocals.
Jason weaves his story of Underground living in the Los Angeles scene over a pounding
kick drum and scattered percussion. The haunting keys keep the listener locked in as
the dub Bassline throbs beneath the track. As the tune proceeds it hypnotizes you &
carry’s you off into a dank basement groove. Only ever on Dub plate & used on the
second PCH “Summer Sessions” mix CD this track finally gets a full release and is
remastered by Martin Iveson.

Marking its 10th anniversary, Automatic Writing presents Scenarii Vol.3, a 3×12" collection bringing together 12 tracks that map out its evolving sound over the years, from reduced minimal house to deeper moods and more direct club material.

Rather than a retrospective, the compilation unfolds as a series of moments tied to the people around the label. Each track reflects a specific encounter : long-time collaborators, artists met along the way, and connections formed through parties and shared spaces.

Across these three records, you’ll find familiar faces from the label’s catalogue, artists who have played at our Automatic parties, and key figures from different generations of the Paris underground scene.

The records will be available individually, as well as gathered in a limited anniversary box set exclusively available on Bandcamp and at Yoyaku Record Store in Paris.

20:20 Vision has been defining the house underground for decades now, and much of its earlier material remains as revealing as its newer output. A case in point is this reissue of the rare Echo Beach release. Founder Ralph Lawson and his old pal Carl Finlow's recordings from The Farm in the Rhubarb Triangle retain a warmth and analogue weight that contemporary production struggles to replicate - all hands-on-deck live passes through drum machines, synths and outboard desks, the process audible in every groove. The discovery of unreleased cut 'Blues Dimensions', which was rescued from corrupted DATs, is the real find here: rasping Moog bass, P-Funk refrain and heavy Rhodes that sounds anything but archival. Top drawer excavation.

Released during a period when Hood was refining the minimalist aesthetic he helped pioneer, the record balances mechanical precision with emotional intensity.
The tracks unfold through subtle shifts in percussion, looping synth patterns and driving basslines, to create a meditative momentum that sounds just as fresh today. "Invincible" draws its power from restraint, demonstrating Hood's belief that minimal elements can produce maximum impact on the dance floor.

Hot Digits main guy Fingerman - a veritable of the UK nu-disco and disco re-edit scenes - is the man at the controls on the latest missive from the imprint's vinyl-focused Wax Digits offshoot. He's in prime form from the off, offering a deliciously chunky, effects-laden, dub disco style rework of a New York no-wave era 'downtown' disco classic. He doffs a cap to pal Chewy Rubs and their joint love of heavy, looped bass guitar lines on the stretched-out funk-goes-deep disco wonder that is 'Bestest Beat', before cunningly rearranging a more string-laden slab of disco-funk grandiosity on closing cut 'We Love It'. We certainly do, and there's a fair chance you will too.
