Tracks like In Our Dreams and 333 706 move forward on meditative chords, harmonies stretching their reach until the tracks feel elated by their own momentum.
The B-side tilts the frame. Another Day introduces some melodic immediacy, folding a tender vocal presence into The Field’s glittering matrix of sound, softening the grid without dissolving it. Now You Exist is a grand finale radiating with restrained euphoria.

Two years on since his last outing on the label, 'The Follower', Axel Willner puts on his Field suit again to present his sixth full-length effort for Kompakt, 'Infinite Moment' - which sees him striding further across the deeper, richer rims of the hue cycle. In Willner's own words, "the threshold of creating something new had to be broken", as had been done with his past albums, including his acclaimed debut 'From Here We Go Sublime'. On this release in particular "stepping outside of the studio opened up fresh perspectives on the creation of new music" he confesses, and it was the opening cut, 'Made of steel, made of stone' - the first to be finished, that got him into the flux of things, making the "making of the rest of the album easier as I went". Substituting the uptempo vim of his previous pieces for a sense of mind-expanding horizontality, 'Infinite Moment' is an album filled with hope and draped in a diffuse, appeasing light; easing the pain and troubles of the human soul through a lushly forested recital of shoegazing modular, complex textural interplays and solar, atmospheric fractals.

Much-celebrated Kompakt staple THE FIELD returns to the spotlight with new album THE FOLLOWER, his fifth full-length offering after "From Here We Go Sublime" (KOMPAKT RSD 02 CD 57), "Yesterday And Today" (KOMPAKT 193 CD 72), "Looping State Of Mind" (KOMPAKT 241 CD 94) and "Cupid's Head" (KOMPAKT 290 CD 110). Swedish soundsmith Axel Willner is well-known for his mastery when it comes to the allusive layering of loops, but it was with his last album "Cupid's Head" that a newly-found, somewhat pressing snappishness started to replace the soft-hued sonics of his ambient-infused techno, imbued with a darker mood and stronger footing than before. A carefully gauged balance of stoic motorik and gloomy drones was key here - just as it is for THE FOLLOWER which goes even further in blurring the lines between concrete experimentation, body music and precisely laid-out arrangement, leading to one of the most rhythmically and texturally engaging listening experiences in Willner's catalogue.

Last year was brimming with serious label highlights, but if we were forced to pick one, we might go with THE FIELD's much-celebrated CUPID'S HEAD (KOMPAKT 290), a crowning achievement for a producer whose track record already boasts an impressive quantity of masterly crafted full-lengths. With CUPID'S HEAD REMIXE II, we cap off a series of remixes on limited 12" vinyl with contributions from sonic pundits JOHN TEJADA, TIM HECKER and TM404 - again a diverse, yet tremendously becoming selection of fellow artists from all corners of the electronic universe. The first rework to grace CUPID'S HEAD REMIXE II comes from none other than JOHN TEJADA, acclaimed puppet master and modular studio wizard. After hitting the shelves with WE CAN PRETEND (KOMPAKT 286) earlier this year, the LA-based producer continues his victory lap on contemporary dance floors with a deeply affecting take on album centerpiece NO. NO..., surrounding the somewhat desolate vocal samples with heartwarming synth washes and melodic momentum. What felt like a lonely soul looking for love on a deserted plain now finds itself walking down a brightly lit hallway, indulging in the sweeter moments of the melancholic spectrum - it's a staggeringly graceful track made to animate and mesmerize. The second rework comes from highly acclaimed sound sculptor TIM HECKER, whose most recent album "Virgins" ranked among the very best of last year's full-length offerings. At first sight, his mix seems to stick the closest to NO. NO...'s original ambience, but as always with the Canadian producer the devil is in the details: subtle tweaks and discreet sabotaging pave the way for epic drones and iridescent textures. For the final cut of CUPID'S HEAD REMIXE II, established Swedish beatsmith Andreas Tilliander brilliantly showcases his latest monicker TM404 with a slightly uncanny take on THE FIELD's monolithic looping, losing himself amidst frazzling acid bubbles and a deliberately stoic rhythm pattern.

CUPID'S HEAD REMIXE I opens with a surprisingly docile revamp of the album's title track by Dominick Fernow aka VATICAN SHADOW. You may know this exceptional producer from one of his other similarly expressive monikers (Exploring Jezebel, Tortured Hooker, Machinegun Warfare, Nuclear Pig Shit, Christmas Trees - the list is endless), but it's with this project that Dominick made most waves in the last years, resulting for example in the powerful "Ornamented Walls" album on tastemaker imprint Modern Love. Here, we catch him dialing back the noise and the grit to create a well-tempered synth essay where the dreamy and the sinister share equal airplay. The second rework comes from Ostgut Ton's freeform punters BARKER & BAUMECKER and hits the ground running with an ultra-kinetic breakbeat pattern that perpetually raises the tension. Interspersed by small pockets of release, this majestic cut sticks close to the source's melodic intents and underpins the excellent reputation of its originators as versatile and inquisitive craftspeople. The closing track of the record is engineered by SONNS, the solo project of Split Secs' Alexandre Mouracade - it's the floor-ready secret weapon in the package and a deliberately thumping take on THE FIELD's meandering loopscapes. As such, it rightfully occupies the entirety of the flipside and tops off an impressive collection of absorbing remixes for CUPID'S HEAD.

Continuously wandering off into the woods of its very unique sound world, the album finds not one, but many rabbit holes to bravely explore, basically rewriting the love letter to the loop that lies at the center of THE FIELD's quasi techno to include more than that one recipient. More open than hermetic, CUPID'S HEAD presents itself as tremendously accessible work, whose focus lies well beyond the tunnel vision of studio-bound antics or sophisticated navel-gazing. When The Gentle People first glided into the mid-90s on clouds of strings, sugar and sine waves, they sounded like visitors from another, more glamorous planet. Signed to Richard D. James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's cult label Rephlex, this multinational "E-Z-Core" lounge unit took the aesthetics of 50s/60s easy listening and exotica and gently smuggled them into 1990s club culture.
Soundtracks for Living was their defining statement: an album that "takes the lounge scene and runs away with it entirely… blissful and heavenly," as one contemporary review put it. Imagine KLF's Chill Out or Space growing up on French 60/70s pop, bossa nova, soundtracks, vocal harmony groups, library music and easy listening then slipping out for a late-night date with dub, ambient techno and bubble-bath pop. That's Soundtracks for Living: a record that can score cocktail hour, 4am taxi rides, and daydreams in headphones with the same effortless grace.
The Gentle People - Dougee Dimensional, Laurie LeMans, Valentine Carnelian and Honeymink - began in early-90s Brixton, throwing dress-up theme parties before taking their audio-visual universe into the studio. For them, music was "a way of life": soothing to the ear, rich in pop hooks, and pitched somewhere between the playfully idiotic and the hyper-intelligent. Their debut on Rephlex was the single "Journey", later blessed with a shimmering Aphex Twin remix that pushed their sugar-coated sound even further into outer space.
This Expanded Edition of Soundtracks for Living finally gives this glambient lounge-pop milestone the treatment it has always deserved. Spread lovingly across 3LP, it features new mastering from the original sources, allowing every harp glissando, string swell and analog squiggle to float in high-fidelity widescreen. The core album is complemented by a bonus 12" of unreleased and rare material, offering a deeper dive into the Gentle world: alternate takes, lost interludes, and secret soundtrack cues for lives not yet lived.

Stages was an obvious candidate for extension. Prins Thomas what he does best here: opens the arrangement, lets the synth lines breathe, stretches the groove until it starts floating a little higher off the ground. Nothing forced, nothing added for
the sake of it. Just more of a very good thing. I Wanna Be Myself gets a gentle nudge from Gerd Janson. The idea was simple: keep the personality, and give DJs a version that lands naturally in a modern set without losing the original charm. It’s still the same track, just standing a bit straighter.
And because the source matters, the original version of “Stages” is here as well. Always good to remember where the magic started. Three versions, no drama. Just strong music that already knew what it was doing.

Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige waren in der Zeit ihrer kurzen Existenz Anfang der 80er Jahre so etwas wie eine „Supergruppe“ aus dem Umfeld des Hamburger Musikmagazins „Sounds“. Im Zentrum stand bzw. sang Diedrich Diederichsen, andere prominente Mitglieder waren u.a. FM Einheit, Bettina Köster, Frieder Butzmann oder Albert Oehlen. Ihr Stück „Svengali Joe“ ist tatsächlich, wie man es auch dreht und wendet, eines der frühesten und gelungensten Beispiele von deutschsprachigem Rap, als solches aber bis heute weitgehend übersehen. Im Original zu finden ist es auf der Doppel-LP „Kirche der Ununterschiedlichkeit“, auf der neben Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige noch drei andere, verwandte Projekte mit so klangvollen Namen wie LSDAP/AO, Männer in nassen Kleidern oder Vielleichtors mit jeweils einer Plattenseite vertreten sind. Das Album ist über weite Strecken, sagen wir, etwas sperrig - mit Ausnahme allerdings von „Svengali Joe“, das seinerzeit, wie fast die ganze Platte, im Hamburger Hafenklang Studio aufgenommen wurde. Im Unterscheid zu den Liedern der anderen Gruppen wurde es allerdings vom legendären André Rademacher produziert, der hier für einen modernen, kompetenten New-York-Sound sorgte. Dazu tragen Schlagzeuger Johann Bley, Detlef Diederichsen an Bass und Gitarre sowie Saxofonist Heiner Goebbels das ihre bei. Unbedingt hervorzuheben ist auch der starke Vocal Support der großen Schauspielerin Angelika Winkler. Der Text selbst stammt übrigens nicht etwa aus Diederichsens Feder, es handelt sich dabei vielmehr um so wortgewaltige wie bildmächtige Auszüge aus den Memoiren des ebenfalls legendären, österreichischen Filmregisseurs und Marlene-Dietrich-Entdeckers Josef von Sternberg. Die vorliegende, neue Edit-Version von „Svengali Joe“ greift eher zurückhaltend in das Original ein, sie dient vor allem der besseren Textverständlichkeit, sowie natürlich optimaler DJ-Auflegbarkeit.
Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle begannen ihre lange Laufbahn ungefähr zur gleichen Zeit wie Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige, ihr Stück „Nokturn“ stammt im Original allerdings von 2008. Zu dieser Weltklasse-Band um den Schriftsteller und DJ Thomas Meinecke und die Künstlerin Michaela Melián muss an dieser Stelle nicht viel gesagt werden, jeder kennt sie, jeder liebt sie, und erfreulicherweise ist die Gruppe bis heute auf hohem Niveau aktiv. „Nokturne“, diese Quasi-Hymne auf das Nachtleben und die damit verbundenen, allseits bekannten Ängste ist klar eines meiner Lieblingslieder von FSK; und die Idee, davon einen weniger „rockigen“, mehr discoartigen Stomper für DJs zu machen, trieb mich schon seit dem ersten Erscheinen um. In dem vorliegenden Edit sind die Drums eine Kombination aus echt Kölnischer Kickdrum, New Yorker No Wave Disco Loops und den Hamburger Original-Fills von Carl Oesterhelt. Fragmente der Original-Gitarre wurden mit Disco Strings ergänzt, und das war es eigentlich auch schon!
Floh De Cologne hingegen kommen aus einer ganz, ganz anderen Zeit und Welt (unnötig zu erwähnen, aus welcher Stadt). In den späten 60er Jahren wurden sie zu Pionieren des so genannten Politrocktheaters, als solche natürlich weit und dezidiert links. Ihr Stück „Die Luft gehört denen, die sie atmen“ findet sich auf ihrem Album „Profitgeier“, einer Rockoper von 1971. Ich stolperte über diesen Song in einer länglichen Video-Playlist zum Thema „Obskure, deutsche Discomusik“, dort hatte er, obwohl sicherlich ausreichend obskur, genau genommen nichts verloren - tanzen können dazu im engeren Sinne wohl nur die wenigsten, aber das Video dazu ist wirklich äußerst sehenswert. Der vorliegende Edit stellt klar den umfangreichsten Eingriff in Struktur, Klang und Wirkung des Originalstücks dar. Dennoch: die Drums sind wirklich aus dem Original destilliert, der gleichzeitig anklagende und erhebende Text mehr oder weniger komplett vorhanden. Bass und Keyboards dagegen: alles komplett neu. Vor ein paar Jahren durfte ich die mittlerweile betagten Genossen bei einer Preisverleihung kennenlernen und, mit ein wenig Geduld, davon überzeugen, diese völlig neue Version doch bitte, bitte für die heutige Generation Discogehender freizugeben. Und so kam es dann auch.
