Icho first emerged under the guidance of legendary producer and soundman Jack Ruby, but it was his haunting rendition of Cat Stevens' "Where Do the Children Play?"—featured in a BBC documentary—that introduced his voice to the world beyond Jamaica. Equal parts soulful and haunting, Icho's voice echoes the spirit of a bygone era, reminding us of the roots and depth of classic Jamaican music. A mysterious figure from reggae's golden era, Icho Candy has always stood apart. A devout Rastafarian with a gift for prophetic songwriting, he joins forces here with some of his closest musical allies. Prince Alla appears on the title track "Pressure Them" and contributes two solo performances, while the legendary Viceroys collaborate on "Pave the Way" and "King of Kings." This album is a tribute to Icho Candy's, Prince Alla's and The Viceroys legacies. A truly enigmatic character from the golden era of Jamaican roots music, Icho Candy is an artist that has, to me, always been shrouded in mystery. A devout rastafarian born with a gift for prophetic songwriting, Candy always writes in a way that is true to himself and his deep seated beliefs, regardless of the external pressures he endures as a veteran artist, an incredible feet for an independent artist with a career that spans fifty years. First recording for the great Joe Gibbs and Jack Ruby in the late seventies, Icho's big break in the industry came with the hit record "Captain Selassie", a track that is widely considered to be one of the greatest rastafari anthems in dancehall. During this time Icho also recorded for labels such as Jah Life, Rockers International, Tesfa, Jah Shaka and many more. Like so many of the great artists in the eighties Icho recorded and toured in America for an extended period alongside Sugar Minott, Nicodemus, Nitty Gritty, King Kong before returning to Jamaica to record two amazing albums for the late Jah Shaka. The A side of this latest seven inch gives us the classic writing style of Icho Candy. Pairing his lyrical depth with an early 70's Phil Pratt style production. An eerie horns line meets the clean sharp, older school backing vocals provided by The Mighty Viceroys to create something magical, the type of record we thought we may have already heard on some scratchy 45 deep in a soundmans crate. Yakka once again returns to the label on B side duties, providing another Tubby inspired voyage into dusty fx units and quick draw fades. The bassline increases, the vocal decreases but the vibe never ceases.

Poor Man’s Friend Records is proud to present a brand new 7” featuring the legendary Cornell Campbell. This 45 delivers a powerful message from The Gorgon, a prolific artist whose recording career spans over 60 years. First recording for the venerable Coxone Dodd at Studio one, Mr Campbell has built a cult following with his trademark Falsetto voice. Equally adept at writing beautiful love songs as he is deep spiritual roots cuts, It's fair to say many of his works have become Iconic milestones in the evolution of the genre. In the year 2025 Cornell Campbell warns us of the pitfalls of living our life in an egotistical way, “ Just try sweeping up your backyard, before you find fault with people's yard.” A searing condemnation of those that judge others based on their wealth, this mid seventies style roots production was cut by the Poor Man’s Friend Rhythm section at their studio in Bristol. The B side dub was masterfully orchestrated by label stalwart Yakka, whilst the horns were played by Cornerstone Horn section.

Swiss powerhouse The 18th Parallel presents another slice of fine modern roots reggae! All Fruits Ripe is a heavyweight showcase album rooted in the foundations of reggae while firmly anchored in the present. Recorded between 2015 and 2025, the project brings together a powerful lineup of Jamaican vocalists — Micah Shemaiah, Keith Rowe (from rocksteady duet Keith & Tex), Rod Taylor, Var (Inna De Yard, Pentateuch), Hezron, and Itral Ites — each representing a different generation of conscious reggae music.

The album features six vocal cuts and five dub versions, highlighting both lyrical strength and sound system culture. Carefully mixed by master engineer Roberto Sánchez, All Fruits Ripe stands as a transnational reggae statement: Jamaican voices carried by a European band deeply connected to the roots with a profound respect for the culture that gave birth to reggae and dub. Known for being the late J Dilla's favourite MC, Detroit rapper, Guilty Simpson has been a force on the Detroit hip-hop scene for over 20 years. His deep gravelly baritone voice and commanding delivery gives him a distinctive and powerful presence. He can throw lyrical blows with the best of them and has become known for his forceful battle rhymes. However, he also maintains a penchant for storytelling and is quietly adept at waxing philosophical on life and love. Guilty has worked with Madlib, Slum Village, Phat Kat, MED, MF DOOM, Black Milk, and of course J Dilla. Recognised as one of the greats, his heavy-weight lyrical swagger is 100% Guilty. Abstract Orchestra is a UK Hip-hop ensemble formed by producer Rob Mitchell. Abstract cut their teeth covering the work of J Dilla and MADVILLAIN, leading to a collaboration with Dabrye and MF DOOM on the remix of 'Air', and the original release of 'New Day' featuring Illa J (brother of J Dilla). Abstract has become part of the Slum Village family, after working with Young RJ on two of his albums, re-working 'Fantastic Vol.2' in collaboration with SV, and most recently, appearing on the new Slum Village album 'F.U.N' The track starts in a dream like state before the live drums drop. Guilty Simpson's heavy, low baritone voice delivers lyrical punches with intensity. The track feels like it's in two parts, the 1st part creating tension through the percussive strings and broken bass line. The 2nd part drops with a much thicker texture and more layers, creating a lush and deep sound that Includes synths, strings and deep reverb vocals, all before a return to the dream like outro. Guilty Simpson is the Big Bad Wolf, with lyrics such as "back for revenge", "when a good guy becomes a villain" and "tally up the men I bruise….Guilt" - Mic drop…..

Blademasters is a new Melbourne instrumental project formed by Patrick Ryan (Cantrips) and Lachlan Stuckey (Surprise Chef). Drawing on the spirit of David Axelrod's bold cinematic jazz works of the 1960s and 1970s (Songs Of Experience, Pride and The Electric Prunes' Release Of An Oath), the debut Blademasters release King's Knight / Live By The Blade features Stuckey and Ryan performing delicate acoustic guitar arrangements in unison, set against dramatic movements by a rhythm section comprising Hudson Whitlock (Karate Boogaloo, The Pro-Teens, Frollen Music Library), Jethro Curtin (Surprise Chef) and Tom Pettit (Let Your Hair Down). Recorded live in the Dune Castle Throne Room by Henry Jenkins, King's Knight and Live By The Blade evoke a cinematic intensity, capturing a charged stillness between action and resolve.

Track one is a cover of Nat King Cole's "Calypso Blues", performed by percussionist and singer Nené Vasquez, who is part of the Mo' Horizons family and used to play in Shakira's band in a former life. Super Oud is a musical project from Bremen, Germany, combining traditional Middle Eastern sounds with modern electronic grooves.

The 7:45s are a soul collective from Manchester, UK – the brainchild of songwriter and bassist Sam Flynn. Inspired by the house bands of labels from Motown to Big Crown, the young collective spotlights guest vocalists on each tune. Named after 7-inch vinyl, The 7:45s write snappy singles that blend the vintage feel of rare groove with the songcraft of perfect pop. BBC Radio 6 Music has played seven songs by The 7:45s this year. Music in DNA is an album recorded in the early 1980s in New York City by Yasuhito Ohno, a young Japanese man breaking free from the constraints of his homeland. The album is a naive burst of outsider DIY enthusiasm, inspired by the multiple avant-garde movements of the era, in music, painting and performance, as well as the native energy of 80s NYC. Ohno channeled his youthful "edge" and zeal into open-minded lo-fi musical explorations using a mere two machines: the then-new technological glories of a four-track cassette recorder and that polyphonic synthesizer masterpiece, the Roland Juno-60; on several pieces he vocalizes. These seven tracks have a zestful, innocent, anything-goes charm, free from preciousness and self-consciousness: a raw and youthful human spirit at play in a new world. Ohno was also inspired by the humanistic promise of the general technological developments of the day, including DNA research, personal computing, and early computer graphics, an example of which can be found on the cover. Ohno later returned to Japan, becoming a renowned composer/producer. In an era of jaded cynicism, Music in DNA is a welcome taste of big-hearted innocence, a revival of a raw self.
