Following the critical success of last year’s ‘Cold Feet’ LP, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Alek Lee returns to Isle of Jura with his most introspective work to date, the ‘Blue Bird’ album. Across eight tracks, the Athens-based artist explores what he describes as a "Peculiar state of minds & Dub Orientated Feelings," blending his signature guerrilla style production with deep, organic soul.

The album’s centerpiece and title track, ‘Blue Bird’ features the haunting vocals of singer-songwriter Keren Ilan. It is a raw, heartfelt exploration of the aftermath of a breakup. The lyrics speak of a "desert heart" and a "loss that grows tall and loud," eventually finding a path toward healing as the "blue bird sings the dawn." Musically, the track is anchored by hazy, sun drenched guitars, a central instrument that weaves a consistent Balearic thread throughout the LP.

The journey through ‘Blue Bird’ is one of shifting shadows and unexpected textures. ‘Treasures’ is a standout instrumental, leaning into a grit-flecked, bluesy "twang" reminiscent of Duane Eddy, while ‘The Beach Road’ sees long time collaborator and ‘Shame On Us’ bandmate, Yovav, lending his magical bass and guitar work to a track that feels like a slow drive toward the horizon.

Side B shifts the energy toward the dancefloor and the sophisticated leftfield pop of the 80s. ‘First Rain’ is a subtle house leaning gem underpinned by a kick drum and lush, synth heavy emotive chord progression. ‘Thanks to Sade’ is a seductive downtempo groove with epic guitar lines shifting through, while ‘Remember the Good’ brings a subtle reggae skank and a French-influenced organ sound into the mix. The LP comes full circle with a smoked out Dub version of the title track ‘Blue Bird’.

Alek Lee’s second 12” on Antinote starts with an uptempo opening to a rather downtempo record. Playing with some of the genre (namely, deep house) codes like the use of a politically-aware speech or vibes, Alek Lee can’t resist to give Time his special treatment nonetheless: using some of his dubby tools and bringing in a warm trumpet he takes the song onto a rather windy road. Don’t fall for it though: Time is a red herring…

Towering dub techno titan Brendon Moeller takes care of the 10th EP from Fossils Records and does so with a typically excellent six-track. The New York-based South African has long since mastered the art of space and restraint in his music and that's laid bare again here. 'Motion' has sinewy electronics and warped bass making for a fuller cut than you might expect from him. 'Disko Inferno' is a jumble of percussion and fizzy synth warmth and 'Habitual Ritual' then sinks into deep, dusty and ritualistic rhythms. 'Apparatus' is Moller's refined take on deep jungle and there are dancehall mutations on 'Samurai Steps' and serene deep space trips on 'Meltdown', making this one of his most varied EPs.

feels anything but new. Enter Sean Green… a mysterious new name whose sound suggests
deep roots, sharp instincts, and the quiet confidence of a seasoned producer operating under a
fresh alias. While details remain deliberately sparse, the music speaks volumes.
This four-track EP is a journey through deep, soulful house and broken beat, threaded together
by warmth, musicality, and an unmistakable sense of craft.
Opening track “Really Love” ft. Will Heard sets the tone beautifully. A deep and soulful house cut
driven by a funky, rolling bassline, it’s elevated by Will Heard’s silky-smooth vocal
performance… emotive, effortless, and perfectly at home on the Soul Quest imprint. It’s the kind
of track that works just as well on a late-night dancefloor as it does in a more intimate setting.
“Green Alot” shifts gears, stepping confidently into broken beat territory. Jazzy keys dance over
a syncopated groove, revealing Green’s love for classic bruk influences while keeping things
forward-looking and fluid.
With “I’d Rather Be With You”, the EP digs deeper. Grittier with electro break-beat energy with
equal measures of soul. Sublime vocal work and lush keys create a rich, emotional atmosphere
that lingers long after the track fades.
Closing cut “Hold On” pushes further into darker broken beat territory… tense, driving, and
hypnotic, rounding off the release with purpose and depth.
Marking 20 releases of Soul Quest Records, this ep feels like both a celebration and a
statement of intent. Whether Sean Green is a new voice or a familiar hand in disguise, one thing
is clear: this is a debut that demands attention.
