Firehouse Crew - Jah Love
Recorded in 1997, Mountain Top features the commanding vocals of Tony Roots, backed by the legendary Firehouse Crew and produced by the visionary Fada Waz (Clifton Carnegie). This record’s release was driven by the people, evidenced and encouraged by the countless wheel-ups and sing-alongs during King Original’s international tour dates over the last three years whenever this seminal recording was dropped in the set.
Tony Roots, known for his cultural and spiritual themes, delivers a powerful vocal performance, reminding us that life’s most important journey is overcoming obstacles to find ‘Jah Love on the Mountain Top.’ This message is as relevant in today’s fast-paced, easy-come-easy-go consumer culture as it was when recorded three decades ago.
The Firehouse Crew renowned for their work with iconic acts like Luciano and Sizzla—shine brightly on this riddim, with the MPC drum machine-centered sound of 90s Jamaican roots reggae. An up-tempo 4/4 steppers beat layered with rich analogue textures and soulful instrumentation defines this timeless recording.
The first of many collaborations between Studio 55, Before Zero Records, and Footsie, the King Original legacy continues into the future, honouring the enduring contributions of Fada Waz and his collaborators.
Clifton Carnegie aka Ras Wazair aka Fada Waz - Clifton Carnegie, known as Ras Wazair, founded King Original Sound System in 1973, establishing it as East London’s foremost reggae sound. Operating under his Studio 55 moniker, he collaborated with legends like Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown, Michael Prophet, Cornell Campbell, and Frankie Paul through imprints such as Original Sounds, Studio 55, and Original International. A mentor to many of the UK’s top sound systems and a key figure in London’s RasTafari community, Ras Wazair’s connections with prominent Jamaican artists, bands, and producers like Fattis Burrell ensured that Jamaican music remained an influential force in the UK sound system scene.
King Original?Founded in 1973 by Fada Waz, King Original Sound System shaped East London’s reggae scene for over two decades. Fada Waz and his son Footsie—a UK Grime pioneer who in later years expanded the legacy through his KO LP series and sold-out King Original mixed-genre events at London’s top venues—worked together until Footsie assumed full control following Fada Waz’s passing in 2021. Having worked with artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, D-Double E, Wiley, and Skepta, Footsie’s dedication to King Original has reinvigorated the legacy that underpins all UK bass music—the reggae sound system. Joining Footsie is his brother, Wazair’s last born Ras D also Jah Model, and long-time collaborator Sir Spyro, producer of two UK number-one hits with Stormzy and son of UK reggae stalwart Nerious Joseph. Armed with cutting-edge QSS sound system technology, King Original continues to set trends, shaping the future of UK bass music.
Tony Roots?Hailing from Manchester, Jamaica, in the 1980s, Tony Roots emerged alongside iconic figures like Garnet Silk and Tony Rebel. While his peers remained in Jamaica, Tony moved to the UK, where he went on to release ten albums and numerous singles, including hits like Grow Your Natty Dread Locks and Hola Zion. A steadfast champion of Rastafari, Tony has collaborated with legends such as the Firehouse Crew, earning worldwide respect and a devoted following within both the reggae community and the UK sound system scene.
The Firehouse Crew?Formed in 1986, The Firehouse Crew became a cornerstone of the 1990s roots-reggae revival. Initially associated with King Tubby’s Firehouse label before establishing their own, the band rose to prominence through collaborations with producer Philip “Fattis” Burrell at Xterminator Records. Their contributions to timeless albums like Luciano’s Where There is Life highlight their extraordinary musicianship. Over the years, The Firehouse Crew has backed iconic artists such as Sizzla, Buju Banton, and Beres Hammond, cementing their legacy as masters of roots reggae.

Dezarie - Iron Sharpen Iron
Dezarie, born in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, is a distinctive voice in roots reggae, known for her powerful yet gentle delivery and song writing. Her debut album, Fya (2001), produced by Tippy I, Kenyatta Itola, and Vaughn Benjamin, became a cornerstone of the Virgin Islands reggae movement. The album launched an international career that has seen her become one of the most sought-after female reggae artists. Dezarie has released five acclaimed studio albums, including Gracious Mama Africa, solidifying her reputation for delivering thought-provoking and soul-stirring music.??
Now, twenty-four years later, Fya returns in a fully remastered vinyl edition. The album’s all-live instrumentation reflects the classic Jamaican roots sound of the 1970s – solid roots drum rhythms, heavy bass lines, and crisp bubbles and skanks. The music was arranged and performed by I Grade Productions producer Laurent “Tippy” Alfred and bassist Kenyatta alongside the core members of the Midnite band: Vaughn Benjamin, bassist/drummer Phil Merchant, and drummer Dion “Bosie” Hopkins. Also featured is the rhythm and lead guitar work of Tuff Lion.??
The remastered vinyl reissue allows Fya to be experienced in its full analogue warmth, making it available for the masses once again without the high collectors’ prices of the original pressing.

Akae Beka - Dub And The Reap
Sagacious reggae lyricist Vaughn Benjamin’s words are particularly cutting during Sow And The Reap, the final recording of Vaughns immense catalog of works with I Grade Records. Produced by Zion I Kings, and taken from 2021’s album Polarities, Sow And The Reap folds topics of political dominance, mass migration, and injustice into a thought provokingly coherent whole. The song brims with Vaughn’s characteristic dual-meaning word-play, using evocative metaphors of nature and agriculture to illuminate global policy. Sow And The Reap’s timeless lyrical principles are matched by its inexorable reggae rhythm, featuring hefty programmed drums by Romain “Teflon Zincfence” Arnett, and sombre trombone and space age synth, both supplied by much missed multi-instrumentalist Drew Keys. Backed by its correspondingly haunting dub.
This series honours both the vocal and version culture of the reggae sound system and the profound lyricism of Vaughn Benjamin. We have consistently received two requests in relation to releasing the LPs: "Can we have dub versions?" and "Where can we read the lyrics?" Our response is the 'Akae Beka - vocal, version and word-sound collection.' Before Zero Records worked with Tippy I Grade to mix a series of dub mixes from a carefully curated selection of his extensive works with Vaughn Benjamin. The vocal and corresponding dub mixes were then cut to wax by Lewis Hopkin of Star Delta and wrapped in a collage made of Ras Marcus's artworks, which he crafted for various LP covers of Vaughn's works throughout the years with the lyrics transcribed and printed on the rear of each sleeve.

Akae Beka x Tiken Jah Fakoly - Everything Bless Dub
Two lyrical and spiritual forces meet, as Akae Beka and Ivorian veteran Tiken Jah Fakoly awaken the profound realisation that all is inherently blessed, encouraging us to accept life as it unfolds. Produced by Zion I Kings, Everything Bless is a gentle yet powerful reminder to embrace the present moment, cherish the divine connection with our spiritual kin, and nurture inner peace and contentment. Vaughn Benjamin meditates on the need for both determination and trust, while the ancient voiced Tiken sings in Bambara, over Mamadou Sidiki Diabate’s cascading Kora, reassuring that Jah will guide. The accompanying dub version pares down drums and vocals, maintaining the same sense of joy. Taken from 2021’s album Polarities, Everything Bless is released as a seven inch vinyl single for the first time on via Before Zero Records.

Akae Beka x Chronixx - Black Carbon Dub (I Grade Dub)
Before Zero Records present the Akae Beka Vocal and Version Series. This represents a turning point in the presence of Vaughn Benjamin, the voice of Akae Beka and Midnite’s presence in the sound system world, merging the vocal and version sound system culture with the deeply spiritual music and word sound of Akae Beka and Tippy I Grade.
Two of the deepest thinkers in reggae music, Vaughn Benjamin and Chronixx, trade reflections on their collaboration, ‘Black Carbon.’ Originally released on the 2021 album ‘Polarities,’ the song is available for the first time as a vinyl single, backed by its dub version. Adorned with the swirling flute of Sheldon Bernard (Beres Hammond, Harmony House) and David Pransky’s brittle, Kora-like mandolin, the twin reggae intellects, with their uniquely delicate voices, introspect on how ‘all ah we forward from the same carbon.’ The song’s message juxtaposes the unity that binds us with a critique of the prevailing narratives and structures that weaken this bond. It underscores the universal truth that we all originate from the same elemental blackness—a truth mirrored throughout humanity and the entire spectrum of creation. Yet, it pointedly highlights how this shared essence is often unrecognised or undervalued in the social and political realms, especially for nations and diasporas connected by the original human hue. The A-side vocal mix is followed by Tippy I’s lavish, questing dub, bringing the instrumentation to the fore. Produced by Vaughn and Zion I Kings.
Each 7” vinyl sleeve has the lyrics transcribed and printed on the back. This series represents more than a collection of music; it is a multifaceted, intellectual and spiritual revelation encapsulated in melody, tone and beat. The never before released dub versions complement each vocal mix with grace and innovation, creating the perfect settings for reflection and integration of the lyrics.

Akae Beka - On
Akae Beka's rich, deep, and multi-layered songwriting style, soulful, healing melodies and uncompromising devotion to RasTafari were developed over decades of performing with the St. Croix-based band Midnite and recording numerous albums. At the time of his untimely passing in 2019, Akae Beka had released over 70 LPs, making him one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known.
Jah Grid, features all-live instrumentation roots. Vaughn Benjamin's vocals and writing were exceptional and coupled with mystical and intense music played by veteran roots players. The album was produced by Tippy I, Blackfoot, and Vaughn Benjamin, and included live drums, heavy bass grooves, and melodic keyboard playing. Tuff Lion played guitar on several tracks, and Akae Beka produced and played on three songs. Jah Grid was a powerful listening experience, with each song taking the listener to new dimensions of lyrical content and musical presentation.
After years of eager waiting, vinyl enthusiasts who are also fans of Akae Beka can finally get their hands on a 12" vinyl LP version of this album, thanks to Before Zero Records. This provides the opportunity to appreciate the album's analogue form and the artwork, which is a 12" square masterpiece created by Ras Marcus, the artist who created the powerful visual presence that became associated with much of the I Grade/Akae Beka works over the years.

Akae Beka - Good Thoughts
Akae Beka’s inimitable style of rich, deep, multi-layered songwriting, uncompromising devotion to RasTafari and soulful healing melodies developed over decades performing with St. Croix based band Midnite and countless recordings. At the point of his untimely passing in 2019, he had released over 70LP’s. He is without a doubt one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known.
Rule the Time, originally released as a CD LP in 2007 is a full cup of innovative deep roots reggae that showcases outstanding musicianship alongside the visionary vocal and lyrical powers of Vaughn Benjamin. Lovers of the “old- time” heavyweight roots will deeply appreciate this unique album with its potent drums, deep bass, enchanting melodies and live horns. The production on Rule the Time was led by Vaughn Benjamin and Tippy I of I Grade Records, with additional co-production by Kenyatta Itola, Tyrone “T Rock” Davis and Seth Theodore of Million 7 Sound. Vaughn’s creative musical arrangements and one-of-a-kind basslines provide the anchor for the unique sound of this album.
Following 16 years of anxious anticipation, for the countless Akae Beka fans that are also vinyl connoisseurs, this LP is now being released on as a 12” vinyl LP courtesy of Before Zero Records. This offers the listener not only the chance to enjoy this LP in an analogue form, but also the chance to hold the artwork as a 12” square masterpiece, created by the hands of Ras Marcus, the artist who gave the powerful visual presence that became synonymous to much of the I Grade / Akae Beka works over the years.

Akae Beka - A Healing
Akae Beka's inimitable style of rich, deep, multi-layered songwriting, uncompromising devotion to RasTafari and soulful healing melodies developed over decades performing with St. Croix based band Midnite and countless recordings. At the point of his untimely passing in 2019, he had released over 70LP's. He is without a doubt one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known. The stellar production trinity that is Zion I Kings have been involved collectively and individually in creating some of the most highly regarded contributions to the vast Akae Beka catalogue. Beauty For Ashes was named as the best reggae album of 2014 according to iTunes. A monumental achievement for undiluted, uncompromising RasTafari roots reggae music this side of the millennium. Two of the LP's tracks, Weather the Storm and Same I Ah One, have been catapulted into global notoriety in part due to the viral success of the YouTube video of the 'Dub in the Rainforest' session organised in St. Croix by Tippy I in 2014. The video offered an unparalleled audio visual insight of the powerful, captivating, energy of Vaughn Benjamin, Pressure Buss Pipe, Ras Batch, and many of the bredrin and sisterin of St. Croix rallying around the I Grade Dub living dub experience. Following 8 years of anxious anticipation, for the countless Akae Beka fans that are also vinyl connoisseurs, this LP is now being released on as a 12" vinyl LP courtesy of Before Zero Records. This offers the listener not only the chance to enjoy this LP in an analogue form, but also the chance to hold the artwork as a 12" square masterpiece, created by the hands of Ras Marcus, the artist who gave the powerful visual presence that became synonymous to much of the I Grade / Akae Beka works over the years.

Majical & Kibir La Amlak - Haile Selassie Dub
Majical, a wordsmith, undefinable by genre. An MC and a Rastaman that's journeyed through garage, grime, hiphop and reggae to arrive at his own destination he's coined as 'roots hop culture'. Part of the RU1 Fam, a UK hiphop collective who received international recognition for their debut album Otito in 2018. 'Do You Know' started out as a dubplate on the 'King of Grime' instrumental by producer Lewi B. Majical penned this song to exalt the many earthy achievements of 'King of Ethiopia' Emperor Haile Selassie. On hearing this version, Kibir La Amlak approached Majical to make a new version of the track together, that brought it into the world of UK Reggae Sound System he hails from. The track was first recorded in 2017 and then remained as a dubplate, championed by UK sound system 'Iration Steppas' and South African sound system 'Kebra Ethiopia'. It was also performed as part of the Kibir La Amlak live dub show on numerous tours around the world. After countless requests, Majical and Kibir La Amlak both felt that this coming anniversary of the birth of Haile Selassie was due time to release the track for public consumption. Its since been re-recorded, remixed and remastered and is now ready for release.

Warp present the the first three full length offerings from Autechre; Incunabula, Amber & Tri Repetae. Having been unavailable on vinyl since 2001, these recordings reveal the geometry of the duo's early transcripts from post-acid house electronica through sparse, hypnotic ambience and into the b-boy flavour that characterised their mid-nineties excavations of jungle, industrial and hip-hop.
Amber, the second full-length from Autechre and considered by many to be their ambient opus (though we imagine they wouldn't call it that!) having been out of print on vinyl since 2001. Amber contains eleven tracks of sparse Ae minimalist machine modules that blur the boundaries between isolationist electronica and richly vivid techno soundscapes. Considered by many fans to be the most crucial recording from the group, it contains some of their most immersive soundscapes to date. Steering away from the post-hardcore dynamics that shone through on Incunabula, Amber moves further away from anything resembling 'techno' and moved into more territories of abstract ambience. These eleven crystal-like cubes of sound came together to produce some of the most mind-bendingly hypnotic sounds to be committed to wax during the 90's. Placing Ae up in the ranks of legendary composers such as Steve Reich and Manuel Gottsching as well as their Artificial Intelligence contemporaries with whom they were crafting the building blocks of the future. There is something uniquely immersive about Amber, it's almost as if as you are playing it the sounds are fading away before they even begin, when played from the start you can lose a lot of time within the endless gradients that adorn its cover, before the sounds just seemingly, disappear.

Across a remarkable run of releases in barely half a decade, London’s Loraine James has established her identity through a blend of refined composition, gritty experimentation, and unpredictable, intricate electronic programming. While titles released under her given name on the esteemed label Hyperdub tend toward IDM-influenced, vocal-heavy collaborations, James reserves her alias, Whatever The Weather, for a more impressionistic, inward gaze. On Whatever The Weather II, rich worlds of layered textures flow seamlessly from hypnotic ambience, to mottled rhythms, to cut-up collages of diaristic field recordings. The result is a uniquely fractured beauty, born from a compelling union of organic and human elements, processed through a variety of digital and analogue methods.
James titled Whatever The Weather pieces based on an innate sense of their “emotional temperature” at the time of recording, but she notes that often, upon revisiting them, they will feel somewhere else entirely on the thermometer; such are the whims of the environment. Compared to the album’s predecessor and its Antarctic imagery, though, Whatever The Weather II is a warmer outing, as signaled by the desert clime of its cover photo which is once again shot by Collin Hughes, and the package designed by Justin Hunt Sloane. Also common to both albums is the mastering work of friend and collaborator Josh Eustis (aka Telefon Tel Aviv), who lends his keen ear to James’ complexities, to craft a strikingly three-dimensional sonic experience.
“1°C” opens the album with James speaking through thick static, idly pining, “Bit chilly, innit… Can’t wait for it to be summer,” as a bed of granular tones and scattered vocal samples emerges. This ineffable mood carries through “3°C”, where high-frequency oscillations flutter across the stereo field, a vigorous, minimal kick rattles through a broken speaker cone, and spacious synth harmonies burst and fade into mist. “20°C”, the longest entry in the collection, daydreams through a din of conversation and minor-key chords, before blossoming into a series of glitchy, staccato percussion patterns. “8°C” rides a sole, wandering keyboard line adorned with minimal counterpoint. In these moments, James effortlessly draws order from a diffusion of ideas, and an air of playful spontaneity creates the common thread.
In discussing this project, James notes that the first Whatever The Weather LP (Ghostly, 2022) was created concurrently with Reflection (Hyperdub, 2021), and that there was some degree of stylistic cross-pollination between her two musical frames of mind. At the time, she shared her feelings on genre with Pitchfork’s Philip Sherburne, noting, “Yeah, I might look different from most people who make IDM, and I’m from a different time period, but I don’t really care about the term being negative or positive. I feel my music is IDM and I do my own spin on it, being inspired by other stuff and fusing it all together.” This go around, she dedicated several months of focused energy to the alias, and to the development of its distinctions: no collaborators, fewer beats, and a process based primarily on instinct and improvisation.
The album’s singular sound arises from James’ favoring of hardware over software, as her battery of synths is modulated, transformed, and reassembled through an array of pedals with few or no overdubs, effectively anchoring each arrangement to its precise moment of creation. The greatest effort in post-production was given to sequencing, on which the artist places the utmost importance; taken as a whole, the suite ebbs and flows with a fitting sense of seasonal flux and naturalistic grace.
The final act of Whatever The Weather II offers some of its most affecting moments, beginning with “9°C”, where the haunting echoes of children on a Tokyo playground break through intermittent bursts of static, steeped in a bath of off-kilter, bubbling tones. Here, James displays one of her many strengths: a fearless approach to sonic collage, elevated by ambitious experimentation and pacing that manages plenty of surprises. Never content to remain in the same sonic space for too long, “15°C” follows with soft pads and glistening countermelodies, abruptly joined by a jarring, cyclical rhythm that mimics a loose part inside a whirring machine. Like much of James’ work, it bears an internal logic that only makes sense in her hands.
Closing track, “12°C”, drifts from bustling human spaces into a concrete groove, weaving melody and texture into a truly unusual, soul-stirring fullness. In its final moments we hear, for the first time, a languid acoustic guitar and gentle, finger-tapped beat over her pitch-shifted voice, a callback that ends the album with wry ambiguity, and a hint of more to be found beyond the horizon. Whatever The Weather II is full of such passages, where formal composition appears like a film in negative, and conventions are upturned with wit, intelligence, and skill.

Marshall Allen - Angels And Demons At Play
Two days after his 100th birthday, Marshall Allen started recording New Dawn, his debut solo album. A member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra since 1958, Allen assumed leadership of the band in 1995. Throughout his nearly seventy-year career, Allen has never released a solo album under his own name, and yet, instead of capping such a legendary output, New Dawn seems to herald a new beginning. A love letter to spacetime, it channels a century of musical intelligence into seven tracks, showing Allen at his most protean—freely moving from relaxed, transdimensional palettes to bluesy big band and beyond.
One of music’s vanguard avant-saxophonists, Allen continues to deliver durational feats during the Arkestra’s gigs. Still, the compositional energy contained on New Dawn is striking. Allen was approached with the idea of a solo record by Week-End Records’ Jan Lankisch. The Arkestra’s Knoel Scott — who has lived with Allen at the Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra since the 1980s — worked with Allen to pore over the archive of unrecorded material and develop this debut. Scott assembled some of Philadelphia’s brightest jazz stars as well as some Arkestra veterans for the sessions. New Dawn was then recorded over a couple of days in Philadelphia, with additional recordings to be added in the coming weeks and months. The legendary Neneh Cherry will lend her unmistakable voice to the title track “New Dawn”.
Though greatly informed by the philosophy of Sun Ra and his Saturnian teachings—traverse jazz’s traditions, dig deep into spiritual geographies — New Dawn signals Allen as his own singular voice, one that’s swinging and bopping and reflecting into the future, with no sign of stopping. Week-End Records is proud to release this debut solo album by Marshall Allen.
“New Dawn is clearly an extension of Ra’s legacy and sound, but it’s also a masterful endeavour filtered through Allen’s tastes and approach”. – John Morrison, The Wire, November 2024 (cover story)

Poppeye - Be My Baby
Recorded around 1978 is this wonderful slice of Seattle soul by the group Poppeye.
"Never Gonna Give You Up" is all set and ready like a loaded gun for the dancefloor. It's on that right side of feeling good soul music without being too disco or too cheesy. Lovely synths get it all up and running but its the light and airy guitar rhythm backed with stabbing horns and the group's harmonies that keep it all together , with James Clifford's vocals floating long like a Mac Davis "Im In Love" outtake. Wonderful stuff!
"Be Mine Baby". is like yacht rock on the next level. Rasping echo guitar riffs and a head nodding baseline kick it all off. The tightness of the horns by these well accomplished musicians is all here. Dont really know what to say other than its KILLER!

NO RETURN!
Genre: Latin, Jazz, Funk, Psychedelic Rock
Here comes a true South American LATIN JAZZFUNK treasure from Argentina!!!
Sound Essence is more than proud to present these lost recordings from 1974 to music lovers again in all their glory.
CARLOS FRANZETTI, who has once again been in the spotlight in recent years thanks to the re-release of his strong late 70s JazzFusion record "Graffiti", was also in charge of this record called DEDOS. The story behind:
In 1974, after CARLOS FRANZETTI was living in Mexico and worked as the musical director of FERMATA International, he returned to Argentina. In Buenos Aires his friend MOCHIN MARAFIOTTI was recently appointed A&R at the local recording label MUSIC HALL . Marafiotti asked Carlos if he wanted to record some of his music and he answered that he had in mind a group playing LATIN JAZZ . After a couple of meetings they came out with the idea of covering the RUBEN RADA tune DEDOS recently recorded in the US by AIRTO MOREIRA along with the OPA TRIO. Carlos contributed his own composition "Doce y Diez" . He selected the group consisting of his friend and member of the uruguayan Band TOTEM, Ruben Rada on percussion, Ricardo Lew on guitar , Emilio Valle on bass and Osvaldo Lopez on drums covering keyboards and vocals himself . This formation recorded tracks and vocals in a three hour session and the next day the track was mixed. Music Hall released "Dedos" and "Doce y Diez" on a single record and after months of discrete airplay and not so good sales the project for an album was draped.
"It is a rewarding experience to see a re-release of this two songs a half century after the original release.
It was hot and it looks and sounds even hotter now. I love it!" (Carlos Franzetti, New Jersey, December 2024).

Tracklist:
A) Take Words In Return (C2 Inst Rmx)
Schwarz' original is a vocal-based house-anthem, which emerges from his musical finesse to gasp for air in form of a folk-inspired hookline. After a percussive break the record's to-the-floor efficiency is unleashed. This is where Carl Craig's remix begins. From dreamy to sawing synth-lines, he utilizes the original's massive potential - to 12 minutes.
