Blame The Mono - Rehabilitate The 2000s
Taapion is proud to present Blame The Mono's "Dubious Scars". This vocal-heavy EP expands on its techno skeleton towards many other genres, exploring the sonic tropes of styles such as hip hop or gothic punk within a solid 4/4 format. Each of these five tracks is the reflection of the artists' will to always go the extra mile and try and keep things innovative.
From the gothic imperium of 1nspiration Delicti, unnerving drive of Crackland to the trap-fueled moody relentlessness of Funfair, all tracks serve an aesthetic goal while keeping the low-end tight and the pace high More

2018 was a year in which Shaun Baron-Carvais, aka Shlomo, fully arrived as one of techno's most exciting talents. An individual at the centre of the city's rich and diverse scene, the Parisian affirmed the thoughts of many as he unveiled his fourteen-track debut album "Mercurial Skin" on Taapion to critical acclaim, marking a significant chapter in the Shlomo journey and a first for the imprint, with DJ Mag naming the LP #6 in their Best Albums of 2018, whilst featuring in Tsugi's top three albums of the year, with praise extending throughout the dance music world and beyond from the likes of Groove Magazin, TRAX and Mixmag, through to publications such as Liberation, Le Bonbon and more. The project signaled both the arrival of a highly anticipated album, but also a complete presentation of Shaun's universe as an artist, with Tsugi noting the release as a "first step towards the total blossoming of a big name in electronic music" as they welcomed him to curate their highly coveted cover CD, showcasing his diverse, expansive palette as both a skilled producer and also a highly accomplished DJ. Having revisited the project's material with updates and edits throughout his own live sets, the Frenchman now welcomes an impressive cast of emerging and established names to remix the package, spanning pockets of IDM and ambient textures through to warping techno as he releases the four-part "Mercurial Skin Remixes" on Taapion this September.
Telefon Tel Aviv's "Dub Remix" sees the US talent take influences from two cuts from the album as he offers up the enchanting and serene "Hadal Skin", Regis and Simon Shreeves combine to reveal the hypnotic and warping remix of "Napalm" under their CUB guise, before handing over to In Aeternam Vale who accents the wandering melodies of title cut "Mercurial Skin" with laser sharp kicks and tripped out vocal snippets. Netsh completes the offering in style, highlighting the original lead melody whilst interjecting slick drums as he delicately lends his hand to "Hadal Zone".

Taapion Records co-founder Shlomo drops his expansive and versatile debut album 'Mercurial Skin'.
A driving force within Paris' contemporary techno revival, Shlomo remains an individual at the heart of the city's bustling scene having swiftly established his own idiosyncratic sound with a myriad of releases on Delsin, Arts Collective and Soma and remixes for the likes of Oscar Mulero and Keith Carnal, not to mention reworks of his own productions from Norman Nodge, Johannes Heil, Tripeo and Donato Dozzy. As an artist, the Parisian performs both as Shlomo as well as his live ambient project under his full name, Shaun Baron-Carvais, with appearances from Berlin Atonal to Contact Tokyo, Berghain to Bassiani, Freerotation to Khidi, not to mention a residency at Concrete. Co-founder of Taapion alongside AWB and PVNV, a label celebrating its fifth anniversary having hosted some of the capital's most respected names in Fran ois X, Antigone, Bambounou and Roman Poncet, his wealth of skills as a producer, performer and A&R are clear to see. Having taken many forms and directions across the past 24 months, Shlomo now presents his and Taapion's debut album: 'Mercurial Skin'. More

Don Glori - Ponte (Liam De Bruin & Ennio Styles Remix)
Don Glori, a.k.a multi-instrumentalist Gordon Li, returns with a remix EP that tears open five tunes from his groundbreaking debut, Welcome. Taking an opportunity to sink into some of the ideas explored on the original album, the five remixes featured here sees some of Europe and Australia’s finest throw open the shutters and shine a light on Li’s inventive compositions and remarkable instrumentation. Rosie from the Block, a.k.a Belgian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ Roselien, leans right into the percussion and drum kit playing that made Welcome so infectious, layering this with cheeky bubblegum-beat bass lines that lend the whole affair an incredibly smooth, street-soul styling. Other key players include Swedish duo Mount Liberation Unlimited, lending their take on things an introspectively dark, brooding atmosphere that evolves into one of their trademark acid-house extended journeys; Australian radio DJ and producer Ennio Styles working alongside Liam de Bruin, hip-hop/soul duo Man Made Mountain, led by MC Cazeaux O.S.L.O, and an insanely infectious organic house take on hit single Dlareme by one of Melbourne’s finest, Teymori. A perfect companion to an album that broke open the Melbourne scene and laid out new parameters for the quality of jazz, samba and funk-inspired music emerging from that city, Welcome Remixes breathes fresh life into this incredible album and reminds us just how goddamn fun making, playing and performing music can be.

Aptly titled, ‘Welcome’ is the debut album from Don Glori. A kaleidoscopic free dive into his world, featuring 8 recordings of revolving jazz, Brazilian, soul and funk inspired compositions spinning together and blurring into a genre bending slew of new music. There is an intangible element of joy and connection sitting just outside the grasp of description or definition that can be felt throughout this album. Each song on this album captures the spirit and irrepressible energy that underpins the core of the Don Glori project. Imperfections are captured along with the moments of transcendence. Layers of vocal harmonies oscillate next to pulsating samba rhythms while spiritual overtones permeate throughout. Congas and percussion form a holy union with the drum kit, co-piloted by Don Glori’s own bass lines. Saxophones, horns and flutes flutter in between the musical canyons carved out by the piano and vibraphone. When you press all of these forces together you can start to feel the intangible; the intrinsic human elements existing in the creases. The sweat, excitement and willingness of each musician to dedicate their spirit and take risks on every track of this album. It’s clear from the outset that this is an expansive body of work, from the spiritual jazz opener ‘Maiden Waters’ to the bubbling street party that is ‘Dlareme’, and ending on the unashamedly seductive ‘Commodore’. This is the kind of record that will translate equally well to both the dance floor and the lounge room rug.

Scruscru & Los Protos - Primavera
You know that long hot days are fast approaching when it is Brazilian music that you crave. Thankfully the Scruniversal has got us covered with a second release that is as scorching as the first. It pairs MPB, samba and Latin flair with hard-edged hip-hop and funk stylings across a pair of tunes from Scruscru, each one a different collaboration. The first is alongside Tony Lavrutz and has gorgeous vocals and organic percussion paired with cut-up beats and jazzy keys that will ignite any floor on 'Rave Du Brazil.' It is Los Protos's jazz funk groover 'Primavera' that gets the good vibes going on the flip.

Release Notes:
The best twist in music lyric history?
On 7" for the first time ever, one of the most important rap records ever.
It's timeless, it's genius, it's just pure beautiful brilliance. It's Common's masterpiece.
One of the best songs in all hip-hop history, “I Used To Love H.E.R.” was the first single from Common's eternal 1994 LP, Resurrection. He personifies hip-hop as an ode to the art form he once loved, lamenting how the genre became too commercialised and, due to a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s, some of the purity and freshness of the culture was being lost.
Common uses a first-person romance narrative to detail the history of hip-hop, resulting in an extended metaphor that's sophisticated, clever, and delivers a moral message that touched millions of people and still absolutely blows minds at the song's conclusion: "'Cause who we're talkin' about, y'all, is hip-hop"
Perfectly produced by No ID and incorporating a gorgeous, melancholic sample of George Benson’s “The Changing World”, the plaintive sonic landscape provided the ideal foundation for Common’s innovative storytelling. Almost 30 years later, “I Used To Love H.E.R.” remains one the most significant moments in hip-hop: a classic in every sense of the word.
Common did discuss the true meaning of the track in a 1995 interview on “Yo! MTV Raps”, stating: “H.E.R. stands for Hip-Hop in its Essence is Real. And all I’m talking about his how I first came into contact with hip-hop music and how it evolved into where it is now. And it’s like all these gimmicks going on, all the phoniness, ain’t nobody being real with it. Everybody’s stressing that it’s real but ain’t nobody being true to it. I think that came about because — once it started becoming a business, then people started losing their soul and they started looking at it, taking it more as a business than an artform.”
On the flip, we've stayed faithful to the track used for the original 12" release. And what a track it is. Destined to be overshadowed by the behemoth on the A-Side, the frenetic neck-snapping jazz-rap "Communism" has it all - those horns at the start, the lyrical dexterity, the beat. Oh my.
So, one of the greatest pieces of music ever, in any genre. This is not merely music. It's high art. Speaking of which, we've recreated the striking original artwork from the 12" and shrunk it down to the 7" format. It looks and sounds stunning. The most important song in rap history, if you really think about it. We all miss her. We all miss hip-hop... More
