Starting the dance, Dutch maestro Boris Bunnik dons his Versalife mantle to opens with ‘Skirmish 101’. Setting the machines to cycle, Bunnik fires a hefty slab of bass to bring down the walls whilst pristine robot like rhythms set your body in motion, all enveloped with sparse synthesis and shimmering effects. Crashing the joint with ‘Acid Baby’ - The Acid Pimp drops a no holds barred, riotous 303 workout that’s nothing short of a tour de force in exorcising the power of Roland’s most celebrated silver box. Putting pedal to the metal with drums and reverb, a smiley face or grimace is guaranteed!

Starting the dance with 303 maestro and label legend Tin Man, A1 “I Said Acid” is a tantalising twist on the classic combination of a Roland TR-707 and SH-101. As a metronomic pulsating kick carves out a squarely hewn path, slow opening filtered lead and hauntingly repetitive “Acid” vocals exert maximal pressure to create a sheer moment of joy. Balanced out by the dreamy atmospherics of A2 “I’ll Meet You On The Dancefloor”. UK Deep House supremo Rai Scott exerts her perfected knowhow: blending organically tinged percussion with profound melodic touches that meander across the borderlines of your consciousness.
On B1 “Necessary Order”, the machine mastery of Sound Synthesis collides in perfect harmony as Keith Farrugia demonstrates his deft turns of the dials that are becoming more in demand. Headed up by the foreboding sounds of Versalife with “Omikron” on A1, spacious atmospherics and half-step beat usher in a gnarled bassline that simply won’t let go. As delicately placed melodic touches light up an otherwise pitch black soundscape and open up the spaces in between, it’s a superb reminder of the Dutchman’s majestic talent. Accompanied with an outing from Belgium’s rising talent Mariska Neerman, snappy percussion and machine pulses greet you from the off on A2 “Twin”, evolving into a fully emotive and uplifting ride. Leading with layered synths, Neerman demonstrates her sparkling knowhow for drenching you in heart warming pads and strings that harmoniously sing.
Written under his Analogue-1 alias, head to B1 for the legendary sounds of James Zeiter shimmering through on “Counterpoint”. A subtle and stripped back 4/4 trip into the lighter side of acid inspired grooves that shuffles out into the unknown: tweaking all the way as the intensity build. Powerful stuff at the right moment, do not underestimate the alchemy at work here. Last but not least, newcomer Morthen Kiang leaves us on a punchy 909 driven martian inspired work out, that fully summons the vibe of our Red Planet friends. A perfect ending note packed full of machine oscillations and cosmic waves.

Offering up four tracks of sumptuous sounding machine led grooves, there really is something quite magical about Manzhos’ work that sets his sound apart from so many.
A master of understatement and muted grooves, this latest set of works are no exception. From the opening expanse of ‘Analog Electro’, metronomic snares give way to washes of delay soaked melody that subtly build and weave delight as simple combination of bass notes roll. Coupled with the pensive mood and cyclical melody of ‘Romancelectro’, we dive deeper into the fold as twinkling piano and strings unfurl: conjuring something ever so slightly in the shade of Select Ambient Works, a sheer slice of bliss.
Hitting the flip, the snappy percussion and perfectly restrained 303 of ‘Arctic Orbital Station’ bring to attention Manzhos’ability to hold everything back as he introduces additional layers of texture without overloading the senses. Last but not least, ‘13th Floor’ offers yet another moment of ethereal delight: rubbery bottom end and enticing melody leaving you feel all the more fuzzy as they take hold.

Throwing down another 4 track EP of high graded electronic sounds sourced from equally brilliant artists, this next edition welcomes the talents of Reedale Rise to open Side A with the charmed tones of ‘Resonant Light’. A magically crafted trip that treads the light fantastic and skips between a heavily swung 808 beat, quick fire bass and modulating synthesis whose dance equate to a greater sum than their singular parts. The accompanying off-kilter acid of Vectrax (Part 2) provides an interesting note by comparison – a wistful mid tempo machine jam that comes courtesy of the mysterious B.R. Posse. Make no mistake, this cut bears all the hallmarks of a seasoned pro.
Over on Side B, Innate boss Owain K leads the charge with a beefy 4/4 slice of dance floor fuelled house meets Techno cut on ‘Another Place’, taking his cues from EBE as he flexes his sound towards larger spaces. Signing off with yet another laidback gem, Wise enlists another up and coming talent in the shape of ‘Polytunnel’. Throwing down another 4 track EP of high graded electronic sounds sourced from equally brilliant artists, this next edition welcomes the talents of Reedale Rise to open Side A with the charmed tones of ‘Resonant Light’. A magically crafted trip that treads the light fantastic and skips between a heavily swung 808 beat, quick fire bass and modulating synthesis whose dance equate to a greater sum than their singular parts. The accompanying off-kilter acid of Vectrax (Part 2) provides an interesting note by comparison – a wistful mid tempo machine jam that comes courtesy of the mysterious B.R. Posse. Make no mistake, this cut bears all the hallmarks of a seasoned pro.
Over on Side B, Innate boss Owain K leads the charge with a beefy 4/4 slice of dance floor fuelled house meets Techno cut on ‘Another Place’, taking his cues from EBE as he flexes his sound towards larger spaces. Signing off with yet another laidback gem, Wise enlists another up and coming talent in the shape of ‘Polytunnel’. Dropping like it’s hot, the sumptuous tones of ‘Island Rain’ are nothing short of perfection as the Scotsman delivers a warm and comforting blanket of blissful melody and subtly tweaked 303 action.

Nu Groove spotlights the artists that made the legendary NYC label a firm favourite of crate diggers of the time with a series of its vital tracks revisited by leading selectors of today. The label, born in 1988 by Frank and Karen Mendez as an outlet for the experimental works of the Burrell Brothers, quickly became a home for up-and-coming genre pioneers. ‘Nu Groove Edits, Vol. 6’ begins with the late Soulphiction, one of Germany’s most prolific house producers, and their Tweakin Edit of Emjay’s ‘Come ‘N Get It’, originally produced by Rheji Burrell. Next up is another Burrell production, the eponymous single by Tech Trax Inc. receives a Dub Edit from enigmatic genre-bending duo Acid Jerks. Italian house and disco experts Dirty Channels return, unveiling their edit of ‘Better Than Sex’ by Dee Gorgeous, before the Grammy award-winning production duo of Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon close the package out with their edit of ‘Ravenswood House’ by Rheji Burrell’s N.Y. Marking ten years since his passing, join Defected in honouring the enduring legacy of house music pioneer. All proceeds of ‘House Masters: Frankie Knuckles’ will be donated to Frankie Knuckles Foundation as it was when the compilation was originally released back in April 2015.
“Frankie Knuckles, whom many consider to be one of the architects of house music is still highly influential to a new generation. Since his untimely passing ten years ago it has been incredible to see the continued outpouring of love and respect that he has received. His legacy is why the Frankie Knuckles Foundation exists. Through our work we honour him by supporting initiatives that he was passionate about: music education, AIDS and diabetes research, prevention and LGBTQIA+ youth homelessness. This commemorative vinyl release of ‘House Masters’ in association with Defected will allow us to do just that!”
