Nerve Collect co-founder Gamma Intel follows up label partner Identified Patient's inaugural release with his thrilling E.M. EP. Across six club-ready cuts, the Dutchman explores the spaces where bass, techno, electro and acid all intersect.

Laurens van de Werken is Gamma Intel, a project that has roamed through a number of different worlds since debuting in 2017. From early outings of chugging techno and dark wave on brokntoys to more inventive rhythmic explorations and futuristic sound designs on Pinkman via deconstructed jungle on Mechatronica, it is impossible to define what he does. What unifies it, though, is his ability to twist and contort sound in surprising new ways. For proof, listen to him spread his sonic wings on Rotterdam’s Operator Radio, or play at some of the hidden underground gems around Europe that deal only in forward-thinking sounds and you will get more insight into his love of leftfield electronics. It's the same story with the Elektrostaat collective he is part of: they host musically adventurous club nights in Rotterdam that offer a different take on electro, acid and techno. It's best to forget handy genre tags, though, because as this EP proves Gamma Intel is always on the move.

'Little Mirror Man' opens up with an elastic but thumping broken beat. A flurry of jungle drums rain down next to scratched metal stabs, bleep-techno melodies and all underpinned with heavy bass rumbles. 'Save Pair of Hands' doesn't let up, with knick-snapping hits and earth-shattering bass weight. As heavy as the groove might be, there is still plenty of room for deft synth designs to bring plenty of emotion. On '5AM-SBM' you are tugged in many directions at once - nimble drums dart about beneath prickly percussion and flaming hits that have a mind of their own. Although the low end is distorted, the details up top are well-defined and given plenty of space to make their mark.

The flipside takes off on turbocharged techno-electro fusion 'Sleep & Cry.' It's a devastating and visceral drum track that also packs an emotional punch as celestial chords suspend you at the doors of heaven. 'Panthera Leo' soundtracks the end of the world as acid lashes about amidst controlled but unrelenting drum chaos and finally, the drilling bass and frantic drum programming of 'Trust' is another all-powerful club track. Its dark energy sucks you in for a white-knuckle ride to remember.

This EP finds Gamma Intel pulling off plenty of unusual tricks and twists on his way to conquering the dance floor.

Following from a.s.o. 's self-titled LP, we have a set of remixes taking their trip-hop torch songs in new and different directions.
Under his Lew E moniker, Lewie Day takes 'Go On' for a trip to trance-town. Brooding minor key menace as Alia Seror-O'Neil's melancholic vocal gets twisted into strange shapes, eventually becoming an instrument of its own. Mutating from the organic to the synthetic during an adrenaline-racing breakdown. Day sounds like he's having a great deal of fun playing with and defying the conventions of the genre.
Maara explores a similar space on her re-rub of 'My Baby's Got It Out For Me'. Once again, Seror-O'Neil's voice is flexed and warped, spinning around the stereo field, as emotive as she ever sounds but more abstracted. Gossamer light with a heavyweight trance chassis - an iron fist in a lace glove.
Rising star Cousin moves in an earthier and more dubwise fashion on his remix of 'Falling Under.' His trademark shuffling, layered percussion comes with gnarly electronics and blissed-out synths. All the while, that vocal refrain leads us through the bong smoke toward the light. A work of restraint and release, the perfect fit for a.s.o.
Purelink's redo of 'Rain Down' is closer stylistically to the original. Bubbling synth-bass grooves atop a breakbeat, the vocal chopped and diced tastefully. Balearic street soul vibes, a hypnotic and heady five minutes. Beautiful business.

A track which lifts you gradually through a true journey of escalating, dynamic atmospheric soundscapes with crisp detailed break patterns that ebb and flow to an intricate collage of synths, keys and vocal hits to an inquisitive melody. A2 - Suspended Animation
Conjuring an ethereal feeling with grand atmospheric backdrops reminiscent of early Intense, Suspended Animation is a calming yet suspenseful track which slowly builds with expressive break patterns and minimal kickdrums as subtle basslines rumble below. Long echoing effects and melodies gently nudge the proceedings forward, ASC once again showcasing the diversity of his production toolset.

AA1 - Repetition
It's been a while since a pure two-step drum loop has had this much impact - make no mistake - the breaks of Repetition will bore their way into your brain like Pulp Fiction did in the mid 90's with a thumping kickdrum and stabbing snare tweaked to perfection. While the beats drive the track along, a collage of audio texture surrounds them with a signature female vocal sample closing out phrases filled with finely tuned synthwork.

AA2 - Pharaoh
Landing with immediate impact and building the mood with a subdued urgency, the Hot Pants breaks of Pharaoh surf the dunes of sound to an abundance of sheer atmosphere as ASC crafts a stunningly evocative track which is aptly titled, transporting the listener to mystical Egyptian sands, the synths and horns whispering like the echoes of of a bygone era demanding their timely reprise through the medium of Spatial.
Epic.

His 2019 debut LP 'For The Ones...' saw Yelfris delving deep into his Yoruba religion and its shamanic chants, subtly infusing those deeply personal elements with electronica and live instrumentation creating a beautiful pulsating soundscape. In purposefully mutating the acoustic sound of his trumpet he adds depth without losing his power and tenderness. Manifesting an adventurous and experimental shift in his composition, drawing on his classical training and love of jazz whilst at the same time delving further into the world of electronica.

With the LP's impressive palette of epic, cosmos-weaving trumpet melodies, fuzzy keys and psychedelic textures at their disposal, Quantic, K15, LCSM, Osunlade, Maxwell Owin, Contours repurpose and rework some of the album's key moments, bringing an injection of dancefloor - friendly sensibilities to the proceedings.

With this offering, Yelfris' incredible musicianship is re-contextualised for a new audience, making itself right at home on the dancefloors of the world.
