Kölsch - It Ends Where It Began (With Patrick Reilly)
I Talk To Water, the fifth album for Kompakt by Danish producer Kölsch, is the artist’s most personal statement yet. While all the trademarks that make his music so popular and powerful are still present – lush, melodic techno; swooping, trance-like figures; sensuous, shivery texturology – I Talk To Water is also a deep and intimate rapprochement with family and history, a beautiful, finely detailed document of loss and memory, and a tracing of the long, unbroken thread of grief that runs through our lives once we’ve lost those we loved.
The emotional core of I Talk To Water, then, is a cache of recordings by Kölsch’s father, Patrick Reilly, who passed away in 2003 from brain cancer. With time rendered elastic by the pandemic and its associated lockdowns, its sudden, alienating shifts in everyday living, Kölsch found himself reflecting on his father’s passing and ongoing spiritual presence, thinking about how best to memorialise such a significant figure in his own life. Those recordings opened a gateway, of sorts, for Kölsch to move through – a way to bring past and present together and entwine them in a sensitive, poetic manner.
Kölsch’s father was a musician – “touring in the sixties and seventies, in the Middle East especially, he was doing the whole hippy trail, playing guitar, and wrote some songs over the years,” he recalls. “But all in all, he decided to focus on family rather than pursue a [musical] career.” Reilly kept playing and writing music over the years, though Kölsch hadn’t listened to the material for some time: “I’d never had the guts to listen to it, because I just felt too fragile listening to his voice. It’s such a tough thing to go through.”
During the pandemic, though, Kölsch listened through the fragmented body of work that his father had produced over the years. “I decided I’m gonna finally release my dad’s music twenty years after his passing,” he reflects. “This whole album is about the process of loss, and for me it’s been one of my main driving forces in my musical life, the whole emotional aspect of whatever I’ve done has been based in that feeling that he’s not there anymore.”
Recordings of Reilly appear on three songs across I Talk To Water. His guitars drift pensively across “Grape”, offering a lush thread of melody that Kölsch wraps with clicking, driftwood rhythms and droning, melancholy bass. “Tell Me” is a lovely three-minute art song, a sadly beautiful reflection, minimally adorned with gentle keys and a muted pulse. And on the closing “It Ends Where It Began”, Kölsch lets his father’s acoustic guitar take centre stage for a lament that’s unexpectedly folksy, a guitar soli dream, which Reilly originally recorded in 1996. “He actually recorded it for my first album that never came out,” Kölsch reveals, “and I had it sitting around forever. That is purely him.”
These three imagined collaborations between father and son are poised and delicate. But their relationship also marks the gorgeous music Kölsch has made across the rest of I Talk To Water, from the itchy yet lush “Pet Sound” (titled in tribute to one of Reilly’s favourite albums), the flickering synths and yearning vocal samples that slide through “Khenpo”, the ecstatic shuddering that marks “Only Get Better”, or “Implant”’s slow-motion pans and subtle reveals.
There’s also the title song, where Kölsch is joined by guest Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), singing a mantra for internal reflection: “I talk to water / Searching for myself / Looking for answers / Oceans of you.” Farrell’s appearance brings another timbre, another spirit to the album, aligning neatly with his recent interest in electronic music. “He was completely taken by this idea of talking to water,” Kölsch says, thinking about the ways we collectively lean towards the natural world as a comfort and a listener, a guide through mourning, a way to map out the terrain of the heart. This mapping is something that Kölsch has proven remarkably adept at through the years; dance music for both body and mind, but also both for the here-and-now, and for the hereafter. More

Kölsch - Cold Air
2
Kölsch - Environ
The sun is getting stronger in our northern hemisphere and the festival season is looming around the corner. This calls for a new Speicher release from someone who knows how to deliver joy in abundance: Kölsch. The first track’s name “Cold Air” might be somewhat misleading as it is a hell of a heater. Same goes for the heavy polka hitter “Environ” on which Rune is conjuring the vibes of his legendary Speicher debut from 2010, “Loreley”. As you’ve come to expect from the man with the hat: This is 100% primetime customer satisfaction with heart and soul.

Repress!
The follow-up to KÖLSCH's much-acclaimed full-length "1977" • A sublime collection of melodic techno vignettes between musing introspection and explosive expression • 2xLP+DL CODE edition pressed on 180gr vinyl
Revered Danish producer and live performer KÖLSCH follows his 2013 hit album "1977" (KOMPAKT 276 CD 107) with the new full-length "1983", again chaining up heroic techno tracks for a grandiose sonic journey to the vibrant heart of today's dance floor. Coupling contemporary production pizzaz with nostalgia-tinged soundscapes and sweeping melodies, this opus acts as both a skilfully composed portfolio of personal memories and a sublime collection of crowd-charming cuts - a modern classic in the making, coming from a master of his craft.
Hot on the heels of SPEICHER 84 (KOMPAKT EXTRA 84), featuring club crackers DERDIEDAS and TWO BIRDS, the latest full-length offering from KÖLSCH is very much a travel album: "When I was a kid in 1983, we used to drive through Europe every summer on the way to the south of France", he explains. "A lot of my early music memories stem from these long travels, as we would listen to all my father's favorite records on the cassette deck. After getting a walkman, I would make up my own soundtrack for travelling, with early electro and hip hop creeping into my life. My father of course did not like it, and it never grace the official cassette deck of the car, obviously"
These trips became a primary source of inspiration to a hungry young mind forced to sit on the backseat of a car for several days: "they were also journeys through the seasons. In Denmark, it would be spring time, so I could nearly see us driving through spring into the summer. The scenery would change, and so would the mood in the car." Informed by the symbolic quality of these slightly gauzy childhood memories, KÖLSCH's unique melange of emotional and functional elements works exceptionally well for the full-length format - a seamless transition of musing introspection and explosve expression, where catharsis never seems far away in dance-ready techno vignettes like MOONFACE, UNTERWEGS or PACER.
From beatless opener and title track 1983 to the filigreed piano banger DIE ANDEREN or the bleep-infused synth-fest E45, each cut operates as its own little time capsule, storing bits and pieces of recollection and then magically transforming them into epic, beat-driven soundscapes. Confronted with other producers' input (and other memories), these traits find themselves extended in the most interesting ways - TALBOT, THE ROAD and CASSIOPEIA (also featured on KOMPAKT EXTRA 79) make excellent use of GREGOR SCHWELLENBACH's emotive orchestral flourishes, while BLOODLINE's lyrics come to life thanks to the distinct timbre of TOMAS HØFFDING of WHOMADEWHO fame. A new powerful take on an earlier collaboration, PAPAGENO 30 YEARS LATER not only rejoins WAA INDUSTRY on vocal duty, but also ends the album on a wonderfully elegiac, yet hopeful note - basically turning water into wine, as we've come to expect from KÖLSCH. On his fourth album proper, Now Here No Where, Danish producer Kölsch (aka Rune Reilly Kölsch) is charting new terrain. Fans of his ‘years trilogy’ – 1977, 1983 and 1989, released on Kompakt over the past decade – were privy to a kind of sonic diary, an autobiography, tracking the artist’s early years through three albums of superior, meticulously rendered techno. Calling in collaborators where needed – most notably, the strings of Gregor Schwellenbach – there was still something deeply personal going down, not quite hermetic, but internally focused; the albums proved not only Kölsch’s mastery of his chosen form, but also his capacity to make techno personal, individual, and to trace histories of the self through music. But on Now Here No Where, Kölsch finds his feet firmly planted in the present. For Kölsch, this makes Nowhere Now Here “an album about life in the year 2020. A time defined by confusion, misinformation and environmental challenges. It is an emotional interpretation of personal and mental challenges, observations and personal growth.” Kölsch does this with music that effortlessly balances emotional heft with the dancefloor’s brimming desires. It’s a space that Kölsch has navigated for a while now – one of techno’s breakthrough acts, an in-demand DJ across the globe and a prolific and restlessly creative producer, he’s also Kompakt’s biggest-selling act – but Now Here No Where ratchets up the lushness, making for a delirious drift across twelve tracks that are at once perfectly poised and deeply trippy. kölsch - Little Death
The year could not be complete without having a new release from the man behind the hat – KÖLSCH. He returns to SPEICHER following a phenomenal year of touring that took his DJing from the top of the Eifel Tower to the main stage of Tomorrowland. His IPSO imprint evolved into a global event and he released together with TIGA “HAL”, one of the biggest tracks of this summer. For SPEICHER 106, he takes an unexpected turn with EMOTICON. Found sounds take on new sonic form and the result is an unconventionally unique groove odyssey. LITTLE DEATH is anything but tragic or small. A choir chant explodes over top of an enchanting house beat which elevates over time to an almighty apex that we have learned to love and rely on from KÖLSCH.

1989 marks also Kölsch’s intensified deployment of real-life orchestral sounds and the conitunation of his extremely fruitful collab with Gregor Schwellenbach: after contributing to predecessor album “1983”, the Kompakt affiliate, composer and multi-instrumentalist now conducts the Heritage Orchestra for tracks KHAIRO, LIATH (featuring a violin solo by Kate Robinson) and SERJI, the latter of which Schwellenbach co-wrote and co-produced. The 24-person Heritage Orchstra consists of violins, violas, cellos and double basses, adding the sweeping drama and organic, richly layered textures that only real strings can produce – a deeply humane tone that is set with the album’s opening recording of the orchestra tuning its instruments (which incidentally also incorporates a voice recording from 1989 of Rune Reilly’s grandfather Ludwig). Seeing Kölsch’s propensity for vocalist cameos on his albums (Trœls Abrahamsen on “1977”, Tomas Høffding and Waa Industry on “1983”), one shouldn’t be surprised to find beautiful cut IN BOTTLES, which features vocals written and performed by Aurora Aksnes. After having produced such timeless tracks as “Loreley”, “Der Alte”, “DerDieDas” or “Cassiopeia”, expectations for new Kölsch material are expectably high – “there’s no doubting Kölsch’s mastery”, concluded Pitchfork when reviewing sophomore album “1983”, while Resident Advisor observed that “many electronic producers claim their albums have themes, but few can evoke a sense of faded nostalgia like Kölsch”, conjuring “moments of real magic”. 1989 certainly delivers on all of these fronts, engulfing the listener from the outset with its sonic coupling of classical composition and contemporary production – without sacrificing the impact on the dance floor: “despite its melancholy undercurrents”, Pitchfork finds Kölsch’s music to be looking “to dance for catharsis”. It’s how the Danish artist was able to inititate a head-turning run of global domination with his touring around the globe, remixes of Sven Väth, Flume and Coldplay, Ibiza commitments and his own BBC Radio 1 Residency radio show. Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac maybe put it simplest, noting “that man is sort of king when it comes to pianos and house music. He’s got a way of wrenching your emotions.”

KÖLSCH returns to SPEICHER / KOMPAKT EXTRA following the tremendous success of last year’s “Grey” (KOMPAKT EXTRA 93). A single that surprised everyone by catapulting the Danish artist into daytime UK radio. Alongside launching his own BBC1 residency, he continued to evolve as a DJ which has led to residencies launching in Cologne and Ibiza. KÖLSCH also launched his own record label IPSO which debuted a collaboration with MICHAEL MAYER with more to come...
For his latest SPEICHER instalment, Rune revisits the bold, catchy minimalism of his earlier days: think of his INK AND NEEDLE alias or KÖLSCH’s very first SPEICHER / KOMPAKT EXTRA release (KOMPAKT EXTRA 68) and you’re not too far off the mark. PUSH is a raucous, sawtooth-y banger that quickly evolves into a high-flying space ride, thanks to its bursts of melody and a deep string break. On the flipside, GOODBYE creates a delightfully melancholic mood enhanced (and transcended) with organ-like synth textures, retro-futuristic bleeps and fragmented alien voices.
Our SPEICHER series rapidly heads towards 100. Where it goes, only we know - so savour the flavour while it lasts. More

Patrice Bäumel - Luce feat. Chiara Gamo
2
Patrice Bäumel - The Cave
Patrice Bäumel makes his most welcome return to Kompakt’s Speicher series and it’s exactly as compelling as you expect it to be. “Luce” is a slenderly pumping piece of minimal soul featuring the otherworldly voice of Chiara Gamo. Once more, Patrice masterfully demonstrates how little elements he needs to create suspense, density and warmth on the floor. “The Cave” follows the same mantra, sucking us into a mystique stalactite cave full of echoing droplets and enchanting whispers. We follow him blindly.

Robag Wruhme - Naila
2
Robag Wruhme - CDV Feat. Bruno Pronsato (Remix-Edit)
Robag Wruhme isn’t just a producer; he’s a sonic storyteller. His tracks are known for their emotional depth and technical brilliance – the perfect blend of minimal techno, deep house, and ambient music—each track a meticulously crafted journey through sound. With influences ranging from classical to jazz to world music, Robag’s music is as diverse as it is enchanting. His latest offering on the trailblazing Speicher series is no exception. True to his unmistakable style, “Naila” meanders between heartwarming positivity and menacing darkness induced by one of those bass lines only Robag can deliver. In short: He nail(a)ed it! On the flip side, he joins forces with the ominous Bruno Pronsato – an elusive character that has a string of cult releases on Perlon, Musique Risquée and Foom under his belt. “CDV” was initially released on his album “Live At Club Der Visionäre” on Logistic Records. Robag’s slick re-rub is pushing things decisively in an afterhour-ish direction. Mental music for mental times!

Raxon - Your Fault
2
Raxon - Beskar
We’re kicking off the new year in style with a fantastic new double header by RAXON. This Egypt-born, barcelonese powerhouse has left his scent marks all over the place in recent years. He has developed an instantly recognizable sound and that’s no small feat in these times shaped by so much formulaic dullness. “Your Fault” sees our Catalan hot shot in an exuberant disco mood. Mind bending chord progressions foiled with Raxon’s trademark vocal stutters guarantee for wonderfully twisted hands in the air moments. With “Beskar” we’re entering Star Wars nerd territory. Jedipedia says, Beskar is a uniquely resistant iron that develops a wide range of properties—and colors—in the hands of skilled metalsmiths. Alright. Musically speaking, we’re dealing with a stealthy, funky as hell trance-not-trance juggernaut. 2024 is off to a good start:)
“Your Fault” zeigt unseren katalanischen Draufgänger in ausgelassener Disco-Stimmung.

2
DJ Hell / Wassermann - W.I.R. (DJ Hell Mix)
Servus everybody!
Why "the hell" didn't anyone think of this before? It was so obvious: When the same music goes the same way, the truth always lies on the turntable.
KOMPAKT presents the long-awaited "two-tracker", cold-pressed and remixed. The Voigt brothers meet Helmut Geier and vice versa, or: Kölsch meets Löwenbräu, because we stand by you, star of the south.
So let's welcome the megahit "W.I.R." by Wassermann from 2000 in a brand new DJ Hell remix, and a remix by Voigt & Voigt of DJ Hell's "Anything Anytime" anthem from 2017. Two classics that go down like liquid gold. It comes from the heart. More

Hunter/Game / U S H N U / Bawrut - Reload
2
Hunter/Game / U S H N U / Bawrut - Clapa
SPEICHER is going back to its classic double header split EP format. HUNTER/GAME are no strangers to KOMPAKT, having released a number of singles and the “Adaptation” album back in 2016. “Reload” was written in cooperation with Buenos Aires based U S H N U and it’s a total corker of a proto trance inspired track – the kind of trance that would have graced Dorian Gray’s Sunday morning dancefloor.
We’re extremely happy to finally welcome the ever excellent BAWRUT to our family. Hailing from Madrid, he has been one of the most creative forces in recent years, carving his own niche of percussion-heavy, psychedelic techno. “CLAP” is an unpredictable monster, taking so many twists and turns, causing such confusion that your synapses will give up making sense out of the chaos and book a flight to the Bahamas.

Barnt / Michael Mayer - Teller
2
Barnt / Michael Mayer - Duration
Speicher 125 is a most auspicious collaboration between two great, inimitable voices in techno: Kompakt co-founder Michael Mayer, and Magazine’s own Barnt. They’ve both been productive of late, Mayer with his “Brainwave Technology” EP in 2021, Barnt with his first release on Kompakt, "ProMetal Fan Decor Only Product" in 2022. Of course, they’re also busy with their respective record labels, and international DJing schedules.
You may already have heard their first track, which appeared on Michael’s "&" album from 2014, the psychedelic “Und Da Stehen Fremde Menschen”. For Speicher, though, they set their sights firmly on the peak time dance floor – the result is two stunning cuts of techno euphoria.
On “Teller” Barnt and Mayer unleash a synth storm, tense and thrilling. Percussion piles up against the incessant buzz, but before too long we’re submerged in waves of dense texturology, making the track an object lesson in tension and release. “Duration” is a bittersweet anthem about "life long love". A moving voice tells us about "faith in life" while gleaming, synths, choral swarms and snares shower down from above to form an epic tale about duration and devotion.
Weirding the groove and updating the emotions, Speicher 125 is a monster. More

Robag Wruhme - Un-spoke-en
There's no 123 without 4 in our beloved Speicher series. Robag Wruhme is back with two intense, low-slung monster tunes in his unique masterful fashion. "Fire" is destined to set your peak time dancefloor on fire with its killer bassline and trippy sequences. "Un-spok-en" is equally relentless and unfathomable, garnished with a haunting vocal snippet.

Marc Romboy - Monsieur Buchla
The kick drums of tomorrow once again begin to rumble in the smog infested, strobe stricken clubs of today. Kompakt’s Speicher series always strives to provide the dance floors with a soundtrack to grant our mind and body temporary refuge and escape. We feel it is more than ever needed considering the darkness that surrounds us all in these times.
We welcome back Marc Romboy. A gifted producer, DJ and friend that has been behind the decks as a key supporter of Kompakt’s music since the beginning. Beyond that, Marc is an astute musician, with releases on many of the esteemed; from Ovum to Innervisions and of course his own Systematic Recordings his music is incredibly varied.
They say that the third time is a charm but in this case he returns to our Speicher series again with a two track EP that feels more like a sequel that is true to the excellent consistency of his previous output. Armed only with a Buchla Music Easel, the Roland TR-909 and an Arp 2600, “Randomized” is pure techno as it tweaks and twists into a complete frenzy. Marc pays homage to the legendary Californian synthesizer inventor Don Buchla with the very trippy churner, “Monsieur Buchla”. More

Robag Wruhme - Frontex Frappant
Repress!
Dearly beloved, we are gathered together to celebrate the long-awaited matrimony of the DJ and dancer. For many of us, the summer of 2021 appears to be the occasion we have waited for more than a year.
And who other than Robag Wruhme to commemorate the soundtrack to this once in a lifetime experience. He makes a return to KOMPAKT EXTRA’s seemingly endless series SPEICHER. But is it a follow up to his SPEICHER 115 of last year? That is a firm “No” though is preceded by a “Yes” so perhaps we should just leave it as a big maybe? It really has no matter in the end when the music is just perfect for THIS moment. Before you get overwhelmed with emotion, flip that record over and escape to the “Frontex Frappant”. Robag Wruhme provides his signature peak time dexterity, making a solid strike to protect the border between unity and redemption.

Robag Wruhme - Calma Calma
After last year's lauded 3-track EP "TOPINAMBUR" we're more than happy to announce ROBAG WRUHME's return to SPEICHER. On the A-side, Robag delivers a deep hypnotic chugger that goes by the simple but ultimately affirmative name "YES". In all its simplicity, it's one of those tracks that gently tosses you down the famous rabbit hole. The flip side "CALMA CALMA" is pure summer festival bliss, resurrecting the spine-tingling a cappella from C'Hantal's proto techno classic "The Realm" for the 2020's. Both tracks are 100% Robag... highly emotive, über sexy and yet somehow hazardous.

Marc Romboy - Beyond
MARC ROMBOY returns to our KOMPAKT EXTRA series with STALKER / BEYOND. Since we last saw him in 2018 on SPEICHER 103, Marc has kept plenty busy with a release on Bedrock, a collaboration with Stephan Bodzin, plus a series of releases with Petar Dundov on his own Systematic Recordings. Beyond Marc’s rigorous DJ touring schedule, he performed live in a Planetarium and ended the year with a highlight, performing live at Philharmonie Cologne together with violinist Miki Kekenj and the Takeover! Ensemble. Marc appears to be looking back to the deep, twisted forms of techno that shaped his early years with this double header. STALKER clearly delivers a typical Detroit-ish 90’s grittiness and drive which resounded the dancefloors of the German rave scene of that era. BEYOND is a deeper cut for those late-night dreamers who are into the sound of Carpenter. A growling synth and laser light synth mingle relentlessly until a delicate piano quickly realizes that IT’S THE place.

After ANNA & KITTIN’s monstrous “Forever Ravers” which is already deemed as one of 2019’s biggest tracks SPEICHER is back with 3-tracker brimming with raw energy from three hotly tipped up and comers. BLACKRACHAS commands the A-side with his immersive late night tune “Giorno Di Pioggia”. It’s pure trance (not trance) of a darker kind with ecstatic melodic outbursts that’ll tingle all the right places. Stockholm’s CHRISTIAN NIELSEN is making his welcome return and he’s out to kill. Imagine a chimera made of brute early 90s Belgian proto-techno and uplifting hard house beats that recalls Jason Nevins at his prime. Last but not least, ODD OSWALD & STEPHAN BARNEM deliver a smart industrial banger complete with unexpected twists and turns that’ll certainly do the right kind of damage on any trusted main floor.

For over 25 years, KOMPAKT strives to bring Techno, House and everything in-between to the dance floors of generations that come from (or live) in the past, present, and future. Today, we proudly present an anthem that truly speaks to us in the spirit of what lead us to create our SPEICHER series. ANNA returns for her third round on SPEICHER following an incredible year of non-stop touring the globe, remixing JON HOPKINS and contributing to a recent AFTERLIFE compilation. KITTIN (formerly known as MISS KITTIN) needs no introduction - she is nothing short of a trailblazer in dance music history by contributing countless times through her voice, music and DJing. Together they are FOREVER RAVERS - dispatching a message of everlasting unity for the dance floor community. ANNA brings her most voracious production skills to date interwound with KITTIN sounding at her best in an explosive consequence that we can only describe as being a must-hear Techno hymn. ANNA takes the original past the stratosphere with her RAVING IN SPACE MIX. Not to be misinterpreted as a dub version, ANNA keeps the potency of the original but expands the core instrumental elements that moves from suspension to release in a decisively throttling means.

Repress!
Since their first release as Extrawelt 'Soopertrack' dropped on Border Community in 2005 Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have had a remarkable run. They relentlessly toured the world with their highly esteemed live show and released plenty of killer releases on labels like Traum or Cocoon. Naturally, our ears were wide open when the Hamburg-based couple sent over a bunch of new productions to the KOMPAKT HQ. Announced as what they call a new, alternative path of production for them, more precisely "less computer, more hands on" we were directly intrigued by the power and rawness of their new sound.
In particular, two cuts stood out: 'PINK PANZER' is pure analog funk. A sluggish beat is paired with a highly effective synth riff. The idea is as simple as it gets but it's executed in such a masterful way. You can drop this track anywhere and anytime - it'll certainly set things on fire right away. 'ARGONAUT' follows an equally simple recipe but ups the tempo and energy levels by 100%. Heavy prime time saw tooth techno for the new generation that recall vintage Thomas P. Heckmann – perhaps if he were to wake up in a funky mood. More
