Following much love for his EPs, remixes and club sets, the virtuosic DJ/producer Simo Cell’s debut album 'Cuspide des Sirènes' doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it takes things to a whole new level.
With a fantastical menagerie of anthropomorphism, sounds create characters and tools; the mermaid-like Sirens, the mind controlling Octopus and the Magic Conch Shell:
“Have you heard of the legend of 'Cuspide des Sirènes'? This is not a simple tale, but an incredible tapestry woven over many years and through countless wondrous adventures. I will recount the legend as it was recorded in the ancient scrolls.
The album’s story explores the themes of magic, enchantment, charm, and allure, but also personal fears. The protagonist (me) embarks on a quest to find the hidden lake and confront his own demons, in order to understand and master his own power.
The protagonist is armed with a powerful conch shell. As he embarks on his journey, he will encounter Sirens who will teach him various chants. These melodies hold unique powers and grant the main character the strength to confront and overcome any danger that may arise.” Simo Cell
Musically, the LP is a continuation of Simo’s journey that began with the ‘YES.DJ’ EP, with a synthesized/modernized take on noughties hip hop, bass music, trap, ghetto house and ghetto tech – but here he broadens the scope, massively.
Exploring new pathways through magical landscapes, via infused melodies, emo and pop, the sensations are bright and addictive, like a sugar and endorphin cocktail. There’s a screen sheen and video game quality too, sounding like the high-octane score to an action flick from the year 3000, with unimaginably wild SFX.
'Cuspide des Sirènes' is the kind of record to stop someone in their tracks, to ask “what IS this?”, provoking bass face, perplexion, fascination and manic glee, all at once. Not so much organised chaos as intricately-crafted-borderline-unhingement, the album is slightly bonkers, in a very good way. There’s a boundless sense of childlike, unencumbered imagination at play, and an abundance of fun, but there are moments of serious-deep-beat-science for the heads, and introspective passages too.
There’s a lot going on, with detail, layers, flourishes, arrangement, melodies and myriad fresh sounds – but it’s never too much; just a really engrossing listen – the kind that that ruins ones appetite for prosaic, vanilla dance music, rendering such 2D pursuits boring and obsolete.
Ideally, the album is meant to be experienced as a seamless narrative from start to finish, so leave any inhibitions or preconceptions at the door, and let the pied piper of electronic futurism lead you way down the rabbit hole. More

Having previously used their dnuoS ytiviL offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think Batu, Bruce, Hodge and Alex Coulton), Bristol's Livity Sound crew turns to unknown French producer Simo Cell. The two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener "Piste Jaune" offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. The mystery man goes for the jugular on "Cellar Door", with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. Another fine Livity release.

E-Unity - BBB<3 (2011 mix)
Initially releasing on Oscilla Sound, then following up with records on Intramuros and FTD, E-Unity gained wider recognition when Resident Advisor described "post-Livity techno with a dreamy twist, from this promising young Frenchman". His next release – on TEM?T – saw him inaugurate the imprint with the ‘Duo Road’ EP – four tracks of electronic futurism, jerky rhythms and dubbed-out frequencies.
‘BBB<3’ is an LP of club ballads that echo his influences, ranging from hyper-pop, Latin music, the hardcore continuum and post-dubstep stylings, featuring heavy bass mutations, spacey synths and hybrid rhythmic compositions.
In an uncertain world, E-Unity takes the opposite approach to a lot of contemporary electronic music which is always faster, harder and somehow dystopian. Instead he offers a record filled with sensibility, love and positivity, fighting the evil forces with heart emojis and sub-reinforced sonic weapons.
E-Unity shows extraordinary musicality and eclecticism throughout his productions and DJ mixes. His b2b set with Simo Cell at Positive Education Festival and former monthly residency on Rinse France solidified his notoriety as an adventurous yet thoughtful selector.
TEM?T was launched by Simo Cell with a mission to release cross-genre electronic music, placing focus on the French music scene, whilst developing collaboration across different artistic disciplines. Previous artists to release on the label are Lolito, Less-O, Second., elise, E-Unity and Simo Cell, plus additional contributions from Low Jack, Peverelist and Skee Mask for their mix cassette series. LESS-O - Mamita (Vinyl Bonus Track)
Straight out blood relative business, TEMET’s anticipated fourth iteration comes courtesy of up-and-coming French producer Less-O - a relatively new name to the scene but whose musical lineage and shared DNA with Simo shall sound no stranger to our listeners’ ears. Raised in a family of music lovers and classical guitar players, Less-O first dabbled in music through the prism of drums, mostly jazz, which have played a big part in the development of his approach towards electronic production (he only picked up a couple of years ago), and obviously runs the length of his debut solo EP, “Shenanigans”, due out 9 November on TEM?T.
Recorded during the recent lockdown that pushed him to explore further ahead his then- dormant potential within the electronic sphere, writing most of the tracks over lengthy night watch shifts, “Shenanigans” champions a sound both dark and subtly elating. The EP fuses an immersive and brooding neo-noir ambience with Jon Hassell-ian brass a la Blues Nile and flooded machinery on ”Bumblebee”, whilst “Clan D” peeps at slowed-and-throwed trap motifs with muted savagery. A shadowy hood joint primed for slo-cruising around the blocks.
Contemporary trip-hop number is on the menu with “Meditative Walk”, laying macroscopic emphasis on faux-organic envelopes and insectoid sounds as ominous riffs and brittle chimes scud across.
Tapping in cross-knit seams of hard-edged bass and future dancehall, “Behind Closed Doors” reels out as a fractured kaleidoscope flush with hypermodern rhythmic shards, cascading bleeps and knee-buckling breaks. The mystique-imbued polyrhythmia of “A Third” rounds off the package with incendiary percussive flair, unleashing a hypnotic symphony of skilfully ordinated dissonance and rattling riptide froth.
Keep your eyes peeled, the Less-O adventure is just getting started. More
