This is the second pressing of the highly sought after “Spectrum LP” by Shook. It features the funky track “Milestones”, which gained international fame through its Better Call Saul soundtrack (Netflix 2015, SE01E01) . The tracks on this album could be seen as an ‘east meets west’ album with French electronic music influences to Japanese techno pop and jazz funk.

Shook’s ability to blend his skills as a pure instrumentalist, and electronic music producer, into the signature sound of Spectrum, are the main ingredients for the success of Spectrum ever since in 2015. The characteristic sound partially originates from Shook’s use of historically renowned analog synthesizers, with every part recorded live in his home studio in the Netherlands.

The first single ‘Violet Hues’ is riddled with a boatload of both modern and classic synth-sounds and accompanied by smooth vocals, characterised by the vintage Shook-sound, but with a more developed musical pallet. Ransom Note coined it “Think Blonde Redhead mixed by Johnny Jewel…One of the best tracks of the year”.

On latest single ‘New Horizons’, Harder Blogger Faster describes Shook “on imperious form as he weaves delicate live instrumentation against fretting guitars and doughty baselines for a seriously laid-back slice of warm disco”.

Shook releases a new LP “RPG” composed with one hand and Influenced by Retro Video Game and Japanese Ambient Music.

“RPG” is composed entirely with one hand. Despite breaking his other arm and being unable to play his synthesizers, Wijnands did not give up and created the EP, showcasing his determination and passion for music.

Wijnands says: “I have been listening to Nintendo soundtracks nonstop while creating this LP, and it really cheered me up when I just broke my arm.”

Besides Retro Video Game Music, “RPG” draws heavily from Japanese environmental, ambient and new age music from the 1980s.

“RPG” showcases Wijnands’ skill as a composer and his ability to create evocative and immersive musical landscapes. The songs have a similar minimalistic aesthetic, where less is more, and the focus is on creating a serene and meditative atmosphere through the use of delicate piano melodies, subtle electronic textures, and synthesizer sound recordings to mimic the sounds of nature.

Despite the challenges Wijnands’ faced during the creation of “RPG,” the LP proves that he is still pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

Jasper Wijnands known for his stage name Shook has embraced the unique mixture of acoustic & electronic tones in his third album ‘Continuum.’ This record is very intimate and well balanced between his melodic piano work and his synthesizer sound. The record is a big departure from his earlier funky synth-pop styles and it shows a more space themed, ambient, melancholic side of Wijnands work. Highlights on this record are the upbeat Tidal which takes elements from minimalism but with Wijnands personal touch of airy production and melodic composition. The songs on “Continuum” have a strong melancholic and very appealing quality to it, which can be heard especially on the songs ‘Remember’, ‘First Memory’ and ‘Within’. The further you listen to this album, the stronger it’s emotions become with songs like ‘You Were Bigger Than Life’ and the delicate ‘Don’t Worry, It’s Okay’ which could easily be the main theme of a Ridley Scott science fiction movie. Highly recommended.
