Future State' is Roger 23's second release on Baud and it features five stirring tracks that delve deep. This is House music, but it is House music that digs into the machine that is House music. Layered rhythms force these tracks forward to an unspoken conclusion, although there cannot be any doubt about the tracks' intentions! Roger 23 has a reputation for producing music that combines great intuition with a roughness that is equally as challenging as it is soothing. 'Future State' is no exception to this rule. Bursts of melody and atmosphere draw the attention to relentless, yet not straight rhythmic patterns and vice versa. These five tracks are a remorseless leap into what dance music can be. Made with optimism and an open mind, they explore darker territories in an inviting and open-ended way. The last track on this EP being a short, blissful Ambient piece that abstractly channels the energy of the other tracks serves as one last lap on the rings of Saturn. 'Future State' plays with meaning, intention and focus and in the process refocuses itself time and again. It is an extremely versatile exploration that is as engaging and believing as can be.

Neurhythmics once again enters the deepest realms of house music with the help of the one and only Roger 23. Roger’s pedigree as an artist is unquestionable having released tracks on Playhouse, Swayzak’s Volt Musik imprint and Meakusma amongst others. Here he delivers arguably his strongest and most retro infused set of jams to date for the label that knows no boundaries when it comes to deep grooves. Opener ‘Optical Tjeck’ is a bumping, overtly Chicago influenced cut with rough-edged kicks and a springy bassline that jumps in all the right places. Edited moments of bleeped-out interest keep things moving onwards and upwards with a loose approach to structure that makes it all the more fluid. ‘Capital Theme’ rediscovers the joy of the lo-fi bassline with Casio clicks and claves and an emphatic set of synth chords that sweep throughout giving the track a clear cut emphasis on the melodic. Yet for all that, the beats are irresistible and the tight programming and ever-changing percussion will make this a sure fire hit. Flip to the B-side for some serious squelch in the form of ‘L.a.d.’ which features an almost tangibly elastic series of sounds with a snare roll that Farley Jackmaster would be proud of. The rawest of styles, but with a contemporary edge to the production that will press all the right buttons. Coupled with a slowed-down, deeply sinister vocal in the most pure Chicago style this is a club killer and no mistake. Finishing up the EP comes ‘Transcendental State’ which moves in a familiar, yet strangely unexpected direction. After some wicked 808 percussion to begin with a sliced chord and synth breathe an air of freshness and melody into the drum patterns making for an uplifting gem of a track. Once again Roger’s ability to vary the arrangements and pattern structure mean this is full of surprises at every turn. All of them nice and all of them bound to please on the dancefloor. Neurhythmics once again brings you the finest house and techno transmissions from the underground.

Legend of the electronic music underground scene, Roger ‘23’ Reuter is the kind of artist who prefers to let the music he plays speaks for himself. All other information stays behind the curtain, and that’s probably a good thing in our era plagued by too much promo-bullshit, useless blah-blah, and fakes. Let’s focus on real things. Most people know him thanks to his two great records on Playhouse released in the middle of the 00’s : In strict tempo in 2005 and Blind youth in 2006, which contained unexpected minimal dark electro gems like Die phantomspeisung or Ain’t no dirty games. His more recent records (which are more dub-influenced) have landed on other reputed labels, such as Baud and Meakusma in 2009. I’ve known Roger for five years now, and he’s one of my favourite DJs (thanks to his knowledge of underground music history, his astonishing diversity, and great skills). Each of his mixes feature amazingly eclectic selections from obscure italo-disco to smoky dub-techno, surrounded by pieces of nasty electro, shadow-gay house, vintage weird waves – all with a very deep and unique touch. It’s always a great trip and an intimate experience to listen to him. I’m a big fan of some of his previous productions, but his new record to be released on Poisson Chat Musique shows for the first time a most personal, melancholic and sensitive side of Roger (Elemental 7). The calm but mighty No solution on the flipside also confirms him as one of the most interesting dub-techno producers around. Just let the deep sub-bass, the serenity of the atmosphere, and the strength of the ensemble grow in your mind and body, listen after listens… Finally, Ambient V is a kind of synthesis of the two previous tracks, mixing the smoke-filled abstractions of Elemental 7, with the dub-techno spirit reflected by No solution. In 2015 we stumbled across an EP by a low-profile Romanian producer, which retrospectively was a pivotal event for the development of the label. This record was Serb's 'Transient Recs 1', released via Listen2me from Bucharest. We were deeply touched by the harsh and progressive sound of the tunes, which at the same time were so musical.
After a remix for Fehlzuendung and his LP 'A12 Proceedings' in 2018, things are coming full circle in 2021 as ?erb returns to NDR with 'Transient Recs 2', a collection of tracks produced between 2015 and 2018.

The third long player on Night Defined Recordings sees SUED affiliate SW. presenting his new mini LP ‘Night’ and walking a tightrope between jazz and club music. The tracks manifest and dematerialize themselves almost in a non-tangible and floating way, which can be seen as more than just a musical approach but rather shows the artist referring to issues of volatility and evanescence. While listening, some may find themselves in the dark and dusty atmosphere of a jazz club, where the band in the corner at the other end of the room is playing their instruments just when the beat kicks in and puts you right into the club atmosphere.
