We are proud to present the Mr Bongo pressing of Guilherme Coutinho E O Grupo Stalo's self-titled mythical album. Blending lo-fi, Brazilian tropicalia, jazz, funk and MPB with a unique aroma, this record is pure perfection.
It was originally released in 1978 on Erla - Estudio Rauland, an obscure record label from Belém in Brazil, that only released 7” singles, with this album being one of two exceptions. During the 1970s, Belém had a thriving nightclub scene, but it is thousands of miles away from the music industry hubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, making this record insanely difficult to find, even in Brazil. Added to the scarcity factor is the magical nature of the recording, which has naturally resulted in a hefty price tag to match. Original copies have become a prized, collector’s item.
The elusive Brazilian band leader and keyboard player, Guilherme Coutinho is a true cult artist. He passed away in 1983, at the age of just 41, and during his career he only seems to have appeared on a handful of marvellous records, which makes them all the more special. This album feels individualistic and distinctive from other albums of the day. Listening back to vocalist Elinho’s (aka Hélio Rubens de Oliveira) delivery, it sounds not too dissimilar to some of Belle & Sebastian’s songs. ‘Guilherme Coutinho E O Grupo Stalo’ is rich in charm, quirky and playful. It feels cinematic, soothing and benefits from being heard in its entirety. A proper album experience.

The Bam Jam Band - Would You Believe In Me
On their third seven-inch release, the band dares to reimagine a true soul classic — Jon Lucien’s timeless masterpiece “Would You Believe in Me” — with an irresistible disco twist.
This stunning double-sider delivers two distinct moods built on the same hypnotic backing track.
On the A-side, the ever-soulful Kiko, one of Portuguese finest jazz voices, breathes new life into Lucien’s original lyrics with heartfelt emotion and silky smooth delivery.
Flip it over and discover the B-side, a fresh Portuguese reinterpretation, passionately performed by Brazilian-born powerhouse Denize Machado from the ultra-militant Bamba Social.
With “Would You Believe in Me,” The Bam Jam Band bridges eras, continents, and grooves — paying homage to 70s soul while keeping the dancefloor burning.
A heartfelt tribute. A daring remake. A must-have for every modern soul lover.

Fire Water - Twilight
2
Fire Water - To The Point
Among the vast underworld of 1970s jazz-funk rarities, one name quietly resonates with collectors and rare groove DJs: Fire Water. With just one known, self-titled 7"—independently released in the early 1980s, the group remains shrouded in mystery. It’s the kind of hidden gem you might stumble upon in a dusty record shop or hear deep in a seasoned selector’s set.
Musically, Fire Water "Twilight" sits at the crossroads of spiritual jazz, soul jazz, and atmospheric funk, with meditative grooves and arrangements reminiscent of Weldon Irvine, Roy Ayers, or Doug Carn. The instrumentation leans heavily on Fender Rhodes, warm and hypnotic basslines, subtle horn sections, and Afro- Latin percussion.
The result is a sound both introspective and cosmic, yet urban in pulse—equally suited for solitary reflection or a sophisticated dance floor.
Little is known about the musicians or the backstory behind the 45s. Likely pressed in limited quantities and distributed locally, the original 7" has become a cult item over the decades, circulating among aficionados of obscure American independent music. For those in search of authentic, deep sounds beyond the commercial radar, Fire Water offers a sonic journey worth chasing—an aural relic that captures the free, inventive spirit of an era when jazz merged with soul, funk, and sonic mysticism.

Citation - "Inspiration of My Life"
Led by Nate Jones, Citation was a vocal group from Highland Park, on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan, that recorded two seven-inches on the seventies. Sean Brown, Terence Forsyth, Clayton Hooker and Walter Jones were the other voices of this band that gave us the highly collectable “Inspiration of live”, pressed 1977, by Red Line Records, the small independent that also unveiled North by Northeast's “Disco unusual”.
A superb midtempo Harmony Soul stepper that gives you goosebumps every time is played.
__________
Cho-Ko "Tried and Cried"
There´s almost no clues about Cho-Ko.
It seems the band must have been active on the early eighties on Waterford, a small town on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan.
They only recorded one single, in 1982, which also is the sole edition of Alternating Current, a label they must have created to put it on the market.
Once again, “Tried and cried” is a b side and the only reason for this elusive seven-inch to be on the wantlists of most of Modern Soul collectors.
__________
The Aferton Project -"Nowhere"
Dave Hoffman, Tom Deglman, Mark Janas, Boe Perry, Ken White, Kevin McGlennon and the great jazzy voice of Jill Kennedy were the core members of The Aferton Project, but also of Aferton Records, a small label from Springfield, Illinois.
Created by Hoffman as an output of Deglman's Drc Studio, the two LPs and nine singles released by Aferton Records, being Prog or Jazz Rock, AOR, Soul or Funk, credited to Satchitananda, The Force or Boe Perry, are all linked to these musicians.
“Nowhere” came out as a seven-inch in 1978 and was used as the opening track of “The Aferton Project Volume One”, the band's double LP release one year later, and it's the masterpiece signed by the collective.
A beautiful slice of “Blue-Eyed Jazzy Modern Soul”, with masterful musicianship, amazing arrangements, sublime vocals and a sharp use of the synth, that's perfect for the most discerning dancefloors.
__________
Ice-O-Matic - "Bein' Nice"
Conrad Johnson, Charlie Sporck, Eddie Dodds, Rooty Van Overen, Alvin Reed and Windfield Scott formed Ice-O-Matic, in Monterey, California, at the end of the seventies.
Trying to break through, the band booked a session at the Super Sound Studios, a local institution where The Beach Boys registered some records in 1978.
The two songs recorded there would be self-released on a seven-inch, that is their only record. “Bein' nice” is the b side of this record, pressed by their own Cold Cut Productions, it's a Modern Soul Masterpiece.
__________
Coleus – "Wonder why"
The only seven-inch recorded by Coleus is as much of a mystery as the band itself. The names in the credits of the label don't add much info, even if some state that Bobby Green, one of the composers of “Vegetatian delight”, the male Funk a-side of the record is the sax player on Webster Lewis' band on part of the seventies.
“Wonder why”, the b female side of this record pressed by Bell Tree Productions, is a true Soul Jazz masterpiece.
__________
Clonzo May’s Sextet – “Your Heaven is Too Late”
“Your Heaven Is Too Late" by Clonzo Mays' Sextet is a soulful ballad released in 1977 on Gibraltal Records. The track was issued as a 7" vinyl single, paired with the B-side "We Are Naturally High" . This release has become a sought-after item among collectors of rare soul and funk music.
__________
Oasis II Oasis – “I miss you”
“I miss you” It's the only thing Oasis II have done, the only thing RePete Records launched, the song Elvester Hobdy had written and the only record Lepoleon Peterson and Lonnie Reaser ever produced.
“I miss you” is the B-side of this rare and collectable seven-inch, pressed in 1979 at Deltron Record Pressing in Lafayette, Tennessee, and it's a fabulous Soul ballad comp'd for the first time in this exclusive collective.
__________
Arejay – “Kansas City Girl”
Arejay is an alias of Robert James, a brother of Larry James, the leader of Fat Larry's Band.
Unlike his brother, Arejay had a very successful career: with his band, but also playing with the legendary Delfonics, The Blue Magic or even as a manager of Slick, Robert only recorded this rare and collectable record, pressed on a seven-inch and on an almost impossible to get twelve-inch, that had only 100 copies.
“Kansas city girl” is the b side of this pearl recorded in 1983, at Hitman Studios in Hollywood, California. A supreme stepper that assured this Philly born singer a cult status amongst the connoisseurs in the Soul community.
__________
M & M Co. - Devoted to you
Very little is known about Carl McIntyre, Sam Moncivaiz and their M & M Co. project.
We know they were both Christians devotees. And that their only LP is a collection of religious songs, that reflect the AOR sound of the moment. It was recorded in 1980, at The Sound House in Hollywood, California.
There are no clues about Carl McIntyre but Sam Moncivaiz had a previous recording experience as leader of the family based Moncivaiz Singers, a group from Arizona, that, in 1979, went to San Antonio, Texas, to issue their sole record through Amen Records.
“Devoted to you” is a great AOR song, perfect for today's Modern Soul scene, that borrows its title for the highly collectable LP of M & M Co.
__________
Frank Pisani – Please don't make it funky
Chicago native Frank Pisani did it all!
Between the mid-fifties and the beginning of the the eighties, he recorded almost twenty 45s and two LP, starting in Doo-Wop, Rockabilly, Teen Songs to finally embrace Soul and AOR Sounds, either solo or with The Highlights.
Pressed in 1980 by Happy Day Records, from Oak Park, Illinois, “Please don't make it funky” is a brilliant midtempo Blue-Eyed Soul beauty that earned him cult status from the more forward-thinking DJs of the Modern Soul scene.
__________
Sonny Khoeblal – “Arrival/Born Again”
Sonny Khoeblal is a distinguished Surinamese pianist, composer and educator renowned for his contributions to jazz, fusion, R&B, and world music. Khoeblal began his musical training at the age of six in Suriname and further honed his skills at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Duo Ouro Negro - Aruandaí (digei de bairro re-edit)
1981 Angola Killer Jazz-Funk
Jazz-Funk at its best and now re-edit by digei de bairro. You can't miss this jazz-funk gem made in Angola
In 1969 Duo Ouro Negro went on tour to the United States. Their experience there was decisive for what we would come to know three years later.
“Don't forget your blackground” Raul Indipwo would exclaim in 1972, the voice of ‘Blackground’, the Angolan band's landmark album. Awakened to the activism of Black Power, attentive to the jazz that was being created on American soil, combined with an interest in the independence movements of the African colonies, what was then the most international of Portuguese bands recorded an album in Lisbon that was a vibrant cultural statement through music. In 1981, “Blackground” was revised with new arrangements, including the instrumental “Iemenjá” and “Aruandaí”.
Acoustic Guitar – Milo MacMahon, Raúl Indipwo
Bass – Steve Neil
Drums – Zézé M'Gambi
Flute – Perikles
Guitar – João Maló
Organ – Terinho M'Umbanda
Piano – Emílio Robalo
Producer – Raúl Indipwo

Daniel Humair & Jean Charles Capon - Water Mystic
Super Rare library recorded in 1980 by the powerful duo of percussionist Daniel Humair, one of the most avant-garde in the Swiss jazz evolution experiment, and the familiar and talented cellist Jean-Charles Capon (ex-Baroque Jazz Trio), who is associated with Jef Gilson and Henri Texier. A total of 15 songs that are a masterpiece in which the two performers' eye-opening acrobatics, including unexpected electric modulation, create an insanely hip groove at the edge of indigestion.
This magical production work was done by Christian Bonneau, a genius in the French radio music world who has worked on many national treasure-class libraries for Dominique Andre and Yan Tregger.
Licensed by Daniel Humair.

BOOGIE JAZZ FUNK AT ITS BEST
Rare 1985 session from guitarist Eddie Fisher, the East St. Louis native whose best known for the jazz/funk albums “The Next One Hundred Years” and “The Third Cup”. Fisher, who died in 2007, never really achieved major stardom, but has become a cult figure over the last years, thanks in large part to DJs and crate diggers who discovered his music and spread the word.
Perhaps the most obscure item in his catalog, “The Promise” was issued only on vinyl in 1985 on Fisher's own Nentu label and has been out of print for years . Boogie Jazz Funk at its best.

Duo Ouro Negro - Dança do Robalinho, pt.2
ANGOLA KILLER JAZZ-FUNK
Milo MacMahon and Raúl Indipwo, arrived to Portugal in 1959 and, over next three decades, they developed an international career in the music industry.
In addition to Portuguese and the various Angolan languages, the group recorded songs such as “Sylvie”, “La Kwela” and “Le Palmier” in French, among others, and also covered Latin American, Spanish-speaking, Brazilian and even North American repertoires, where on their various tours they came into contact with the struggle for the Civil Rights of the black population.
In 1969 Duo Ouro Negro went on tour to the United States. Their experience there was decisive for what we would come to know three years later. “Don't forget your blackground”, Raul Indipwo would exclaim in 1972, the voice of ‘Blackground’, the Angolan band's landmark album. Awakened to the activism of Black Power, attentive to the jazz that was being created on American soil, combined with an interest in the independence movements of the African colonies, what was then the most international of Portuguese bands recorded an album in Lisbon that was a vibrant cultural statement through music.
In 1981, “Blackground” was revised with new arrangements, including the instrumental “Dança do Robalinho”. Jazz-Funk at its best and now reissued for the first time in 7” format.
You can't miss this jazz-funk gem made in Angola.

This isn’t just a seminal album. It is an estuary. All the black rivers that would form Brazilian funk/hip-hop flow through it. Led by Paulista pianist Salvador Silva Filho – Dom Salvador – “Som, Sangue, e Raça” from 1971, one year after the explosion of Tim Maia on the scene, catalyzed the bossa nova and jazz background of its leader with the rhythm and blues of its members like saxophonist Oberdã Magalhães, nephew of samba-enredo master Silas de Oliveira and future leader of Banda Black Rio, who since the group Impacto 8 (which had, among others, Robertinho Silva on drums and Raul de Souza on trombone) had already been trying to reconcile MPB with Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Add to all this a mixture of samba, Nordestino accent, and even the black side of the Jovem Guarda represented by the authorial presence of Getúlio Cortes (older brother of Gerson King Combo, our James Brown “cover”) in ‘Hei! Você’. Alongside these elements and the presence of Rubão Sabino (bass), who still called himself ‘Rubens’, drummer Luis Carlos (another member of Black Rio), the record enlists the trumpet and flugelhorn of symphonic musician Darcy in place of the original Barrosinho (yet one more founder of Black Rio), who was traveling during the recording but would end up being a leading force of the band.
The album ‘Som, Sangue e raça’ paves the way for future generations of musicians and producers of the Carioca scene at the beginning of the 1970s. The lyrics that dealt with the question of race and the explosive fusion of samba, soul, jazz, and funk, elaborated by Dom Salvador and his troupe, Abolição, established the bases for the development of new sounds and tendencies in Brazilian music.

Private pressings have always been objects of demand and research by record collectors. In most cases, print runs were no more than 300 copies, and despite the total lack of recognition, this movement can be seen as a countercurrent act to the mass music industry. Private presses are non-commercial print runs distributed as a promotion or sold at concerts.
This was the case of Belair that, in 1980, recorded and sold the album “Relax, You're Soaking In It” at their own risk and distributed it in the San Francisco area. At the time, 1000 copies were pressed, which have become rare and highly desirable for collectors.

Majoie Hajary is an atypical musician. Born in Paramaribo (Suriname) to Indian parents and raised in Amsterdam. In 1970, in France, accompanied by the best Jazz musicians and with arrangements by Roger Guerin, she recorded “La Passion Selon Judas”.
The result was an incredible fusion of Psych, Funk, Indian and Jazz elements – deep religious Jazz in the vein of Jef Gilson.

One of the greatest musicians in the history of Brazilian music. Conductor, composer, arranger, band leader and, without a doubt, one of Brazil's most brilliant sax and flute players.
In 68, Paulo Moura brought together a notable group from the country's jazz and instrumental music to record the album "Mensagem". He walked between African rhythm and American and European avant-garde, transforming the Brazilian soul.

TRACKLIST
A1. Isolation I
B1. Isolation II
INFO
Music from the movie “Abbreviated Serial Killer”. In this soundtrack Masahiko Togashi and Motoki Takagi challenged “the limit of improvisational performance”.
The film was directed by Masao Adachi. This is a so-called “landscape film” about Norio Nagayama, a serial killer. Masahiko Togashi, who was asked to compose the music, recorded three songs as a duo with Motoki Takagi. Togashi said, “I thought it was strange to compose the human heart,” and the recording was done with “total improvisation.”
Recorded in December 1969. This year is the beginning of the Japanese free jazz trend. This album is an important work that Togashi, who was the central figure of the scene, and Takagi, who also had a strong presence at the core, said, “I challenged the limits of improvisation.” The soundtrack is one of the best free jazz albums in Japan.

On October 15th & 16th 2020, drummer Daniel Villarreal was joined by guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss for two afternoons of recording in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles.
For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble recording session they’d done in-person since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice moments from the sessions made it onto Villarreal’s critically-acclaimed 2022 album Panamá 77, bust most of the music remained unreleased.
Lados B is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various rhythmic modes and structures for improvisation - flow as informed by the Latin soul of Fania Records as it is by the otherworldly trance of Brain Records - while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free together (as heard on Parker’s recently-released Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, and the LA side of Makaya McCraven’s 2018 LP Universal Beings) to build harmonic buoys for their spontaneous melodicism. The result is a beautifully vivid illustration of context, creativity, and collective composition from a particularly rich moment in history.
Tracklist:
1. Traveling With
2. Sunset Cliffs
3. Republic
4. Chicali Outpost
5. Bring It
6. Salute
7. Daytime Nighttime
8. Things Can Be Calm
9. Rug Moti

(LP with obi strip) A magnificent concept album that will remain in the history of Japanese jazz
TRACKLIST
A1. By The Red Stream
A2. Warm, Honest And Love
B1. There Is Not Any War To End The War
B2. Something Over The War
INFO
The sound that swallows jazz rock, mode jazz, and free jazz is serious and profound.
A magnificent concept album that will remain in the history of Japanese jazz with the theme of global anti-war and peace
Hiromasa Suzuki, a rare pianist/composer/arranger who showed his skills in the groups of Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa. Collaborating with Big Soul Media, led by Jiro Inagaki, one of the best jazz rock groups of our time, this work is unusual for a Japanese jazz work, and the concept is based on the theme of “global anti-war and peace.”
The sound that swallows jazz rock, mode jazz, and free jazz is serious and solid, but at the same time, it is full of overwhelming dynamism.
Suzuki’s ability to manage a big band and create a masterpiece sound is also splendid, and Big Soul Media, which listened to Suzuki’s intentions and responded to his request, is also splendid.
Both Suzuki and Inagaki’s activities in the jazz-rock era are at their peak, and this work is also important in that it captures the overlap.

We Release Jazz is sooooo happy to announce the release of a very limited edition double LP for Boillat Thérace Quintet’s 1974 Montreux Jazz Festival performance, with 3 bonus studio tracks! This gem from the Geneva, Switzerland band follows the acclaimed WRJ reissue of their self-titled album (1974) and My Greatest Love (1975), their full-length with Benny Bailey. The 300-copies-only white sleeved DLP comes with the classic obi and features fully remastered audiophile-ready recordings.
Captured live at Montreux Jazz Festival, July 3rd 1974, this rare audio treat features Boillat Thérace Quintet fan-favorites including their infamous homages to Swiss Marmite ("Cenovis"), and Geneva's public transport line Tram 12 ("1224"), as well as remarkable renditions of timeless jazz numbers by Freddie Hubbard ("Straight Life" and "Backlash") and Chick Corea ("Spain").
Additionally, the double LP offers 3 bonus songs taken from the ensemble’s sessions for their self-titled debut: superb takes on Herbie Hancock’s "Dolphin Dance", Wayne Shorter’s "Adam’s Apple", and Claude Engel’s "5th of July, Dulong Street".
All in all it’s a beautiful soul-jazz/modal fest full of flair and heart, one that perfectly encapsulates the vibrant and inventive Swiss jazz scene of the 1970s. A must have for fans and collectors.
This new album from We Release Jazz follows the label’s celebrated releases of the Ryo Fukui catalogue (Scenery, Mellow Dream, A Letter from Slowboat, Ryo Fukui in New York, My Favorite Tune), Hiroshi Suzuki’s seminal Cat album, and Le Cercle Rouge soundtrack by Eric Demarsan among other jazz wonders.

Release Notes:
The Roger Webb Sound's Moonshade is one of the coolest records ever. Originally appearing via the legendary De Wolfe library in 1971, it's a sumptuous jazz-soul-funk instrumental set. Full of melodic, melancholic yet sun-drenched songs, rich with colour and contrast, it was composed by self-taught jazz pianist Roger Webb and features vocal performances by Barbara Moore. That's right; *the* powerhouse library music duo! It makes Moonshade the perfect precursor and accompaniment to Barbara Moore's eternal classic Vocal Shades And Tones. It will come as no surprise that original copies, if you can ever find them, will set you back north of 200 notes.
Moonshade is a phenomenal showcase of Brit maestro Webb's own roots in jazz. Those roots are served up here with a plethora of fast-stepping rhythms that truly give flight to the vocals of Barbara Moore, as they soar in wonderful ways. Moore sings wordlessly throughout, allowing her voice to act like another instrument in concert with the horns and keyboards elevating the fine arrangements. This is a deeply beautiful record.
The album opens with the ornate Baroque pop splendour of the sun-dappled melancholia of "Sunshine". Strings, piano and wordless female vocals combine to create this brief beauty of unimaginable grace. The cool "Gentle Eyes" features haunting and beautiful vocals, smooth jazz piano and horns and a general easy vibe without being easy listening, if you know what we mean. You do. Just listen. The pounding "Heavy Lace" is one for the beat-heads, funky open drums (!) with muted organ, bassy piano chords and ace horns. Sampled by Quakers for their great debut album on Stones Throw. The nostalgic "Yesterday" is wistful and beautifully melodic instrumental soul music with gorgeous acoustic guitar and flutes. It's followed by the light, lilting "Petal Soft" which features more Baroque styles, overflowing with flutes and harps. The bright, bouncing "Coaster" is an easy-going piano-led, guitar-driven swinger whilst "Grey Sigh" is another classic. A real highlight, with more fantastic propulsive drums and percussion and plaintive wordless vocals courtesy of Barbara. Speaking of which, the soft, sweet Rhodes jazz of the lilting "Sweet Thing" is another staggering showcase of the brilliance of Barbara. Just astounding.
Head straight past the honky-tonk-by-numbers piano jaunt "Cough Drop" and luxuriate in the soft, delicate beauty of the album's melodic, cyclical title track, "Moon Shade". Fragile flutes and acoustic guitar float across judicious bass notes before giving way to slightly ominous piano and, again, those beguiling wordless vocals. And then round again to the flute refrain of the intro. This time with the vocals to see us out. Majestic drama jazz at its finest. The cello-and-flute adorned "Sapphire" is a fluid orchestral beauty whilst "Interweave" rides with more urgency in its string and bass stabs. When the warm keys enter, it's a bonafide mellifluous wonder. The softer "Musette" begins in beautifully gentle fashion before pivoting for a driving yet elegant piano middle section. It reverts back to the mellow intro, for its outro. Understood? The melodic organ and prominent rhythm section running through "Reminiscence" makes for a delightfully understated folk-funk instrumental whilst the cool, rolling piano feels of "7.30 For 8.00" seem to perfectly suit the phrase "dinner jazz". It's no bad thing, c'mon. This classy, memorable set is rounded out by the half-minute mince of the Barbara-blessed "Sparky". It's just over too soon!
The audio for Moonshade has been brilliantly remastered by Be With regular Simon Francis, ensuring this release sounds better than ever. Cicely Balston's expert skills have made sure nothing is lost in the cut whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at Record Industry in Holland. The original, iconic sleeve has been restored here at Be With HQ as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue.

In July of 2022, just one month before jaimie branch’s death sent shockwaves around the world, the trumpet player and composer was in Chicago at International Anthem (IARC) studios putting finishing touches on an album. It was a suite of music she had composed and then recorded with her flagship ensemble, Fly or Die.

Tomasz Stañko Quintet - Piece 6
It would appear that Polish jazz is a well-known subject through and through. Dozens of outstanding albums, biographies of the masters,
hundreds of journal articles. As it turns out, it is still possible to find music that has been waiting for years to be discovered. On the 80th
birthday of Tomasz Stañko, Astigmatic Records presents the first part of Wooden Music, a conceptual project created by the maestro
and his legendary quintet, which has been stored in the archives of Radio Bremen for 50 years.
Tomasz Stañko was an exceptional Polish jazz trumpeter. He passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of numerous releases,
soundtracks, concert recordings and wild stories involving him. Before rising to the top, he honed his craft alongside Krzysztof Komeda
and Andrzej Trzaskowski. In the mid-1960s, he appeared on Astigmatic and Polish Jazz Vol. 4 – the albums that were a creative
manifesto for Polish jazz of those years. However, all this time he was constantly thinking about starting his own band.
In 1968 he completed the line-up – Janusz Stefañski on drums, Bronis³aw Suchanek on double bass, Janusz Muniak on tenor
saxophone and Zbigniew Seifert on alto saxophone, which he soon replaced with the violin. Stañko classified the quintet's output into
three periods. The first, composed, is associated with Music for K, Stañko's publishing debut as a leader, which became a permanent
entry in the canon of Polish jazz records. The second period is wooden music – it's the free jazz period, the least known in the quintet's
history despite the fact that it spanned more than three years. The third and final period is linked to the release of the band's final album,
the cult Purple Sun. However, the entire period between Music for K and Purple Sun is shrouded in mystery, as the band was mainly in
Western Europe at the time. In the early 1970s, all the musicians take one-year visas. In between tours they live in Germany: first in a
hippie commune in Wurtzburg, then in Darmstadt. They play in clubs on a day by day basis. The quintet is said to be distinguished from
other bands by their ability to completely "burn" in the fire of improvisation. They lead their lives as a single organism, touring without
wives or girlfriends. The compositions are blurred, the fascination with free music prevails. Short pieces and motives are the starting point
for further performance. The ensemble does not plan, they just play. On 28 May 1972 they play at the Iserlohn jazz festival. JG Records
would release this performance as Jazzmessage from Poland. The very music recorded there represents what the quintet called Wooden
Music.
The foundation of wooden music is the sound of the double bass and the violin, but it soon becomes apparent that all instruments except
for Tomasz Stañko's trumpet are wooden. A string orchestra is born, over which the metal trumpet can weave all sorts of hues
accompanied by the saxophone. What fascinates the quintet in wooden music is the melody, rhythm and timbre - where these are usually
just an element, they fill the entire piece in their case. Bronis³aw Suchanek, the last living member of the quintet, recalls:
"Wooden music is all about total improvisation. We used to arrive at a gig, start playing without really knowing where we were heading.
The only thing that guided us was the common and mental compatibility, understanding, friendship and respect along this musical journey.
Music was the first most important element to attribute to – it was free jazz in its purest form. If there are any moments that seem
orchestrated it is because we played together for several years, evening after evening, going from club to club. We knew each other
better than our parents knew us, we had total trust in each other – that's what made this music exist in the way it did."
