Returning to continue Shall Not Fade's Season Series with a second LP, Joe Newham serves up harmonious and glimmering jazz infusions under his Gavinco moniker. The Brighton-based producer saw success with his Dumont LP earlier this year, and fans will recognise his smooth composition immediately on Beriza.
"West Horizon" begins the record, an expansive slow burner with haunting vocals, leaving room for a club beat that sets the tone going forward. Field recordings feature prominently on the title track, a laid back style which evokes tropical heat and lazy evenings, easing you into "Savoy's" dance floor grooves complemented by syncopated hand percussion. Hints of sax and strings provide the ear candy on
"Momento", a gentle poolside jazz exploration. "Like This" is punchier, tight funk riffs contrasting discordant piano bits which swirl to an uptempo rhythm. "Creative Times" centres its flute melodies while the rumble of sub bass slowly swells into a perfect pairing of dance music and jazz. The closing track continues this energy.

‘Deep Roots’ is a ravishing journey through lush, fantastical landscapes and paradisiacal coastlines.
It is here you can find Gavinco’s soothing synths and expert organic rhythm. From the title track through to ‘Transmute’, the A-side slowly builds up in energy, playful brass and lo-fi vocal samples creating an irresistible vibe whilst keys trickle like streams through swung jazz grooves.
The salt in the air makes way for glimmering stars on the B-side of ‘Deep Roots’, picking up the pace in ‘Showdown Groove’ and ‘Inspirations’ but maintaining the serene atmosphere of the album. ‘Homage’ then closes out the record via intense, mind-melting melodics and emotional vocal harmonies, rounding off a stellar LP where each instrument lives, breathes and brims with feeling.
“This is a deep jazz house album that I made with various old electric guitars, acoustic drum kits, Rhode & Hammond keyboards. I love world music, so I wanted to have an international selection of genres for the tracks so they could sound like they originate from any part of the globe. I wanted the listener to reflect and feel more engaged in the music by adding a meaningful or inspirational speech or voice for each track that is integrated into the rhythm of the music." - Gavinco
Joe Newham aka Gavinco first emerged on Houseum on the ‘Four J’s’ compilation back in 2018. He quickly followed things up with the “Caravella’ and ‘Interflow’ EPs in the years after, with this year’s ‘Deep Roots’ now marking the Brighton artist’s third escapade on the label. Newham combines a myriad of production techniques associated with genres anywhere from Acid House through to Afro-Beat, incorporating each element carefully into his versatile discography, making him a crucial player in the smooth house scene that’s released on notable imprints like Shall Not Fade, Novaj as well as his own outlet Satta Records. Shall Not Fade's Season Series imprint hosts Brighton-based DJ and producer Gavinco (Joe Newham) for its first long-play release - Dumont LP; a mellow yet rhythmic collection of jazz house explorations. This is his second LP in a year, and blends organic instrumentation with clubby samples.
Dumont is a polished piece of work, smoothly produced and flowing from song to song imperceptibly like the pianist improvising to entertain punters in an uptown jazz bar. The title track is all swinging, dusty sax scattered with sharp natural keys, although the rough and ready undercurrent suggests something clubbier. It prepares you for the harder "Electronic Feeling" that takes similar jazz stylization but ups the house beat; a bassiness builds into the end of the A-side with "Transit" centering around saxophone loops and elevated percussion that gets hips moving. This is stripped right back for wistful guitar and soulful female vocals in "Sweetness" - "Carry On" acts as a meeting point between this and the danceable rest of the record, summer vibes passing through it as the pulse of house influence builds. Newham plays with Herbie Hancock-style flute trills during "Fusion", vintage funk guitar rising hazily from the rhythm like a mirage. If "Fusion" evokes sun-baked Balearic beaches, "Devouee" is the gentle tide cooling them, fading chord stabs mirroring placid sax.
Digital bonus track "Estrella" carries a layered brass section, building to a euphoric drop - though taking a sound palette from candlelit jazz clubs, this is sunshine music. More
