Besides using the razor-sharp spokes as an attacking tool, the tessen was also used as a throwing weapon, for fending off knives and darts and as a swimming aid. Samurai could also secretly take them to places where overt weapons were not allowed. More

Farron enters faster territories on this record, telling the story of the hunt after the mysterious jade antique that is hidden in the infamous 'House Of Traps'.

After entering the house, one already feels the oppressive atmosphere. The ubiquitous feeling of not being welcome here is obvious when the golden walls invert and you come to face countless swordsmen ready to attack. The vigorous atmosphere of 'Penny At The Chain' boosts up your confidence for what is about to come.

But what if the intruder is skilled in kung-fu? The mob retreats automatically and bars of iron come down to confine you. 'Wilshire 1015' and its driving bassline, warm pads and whirling breaks will calm you down a bit. But what's next?

In the twinkling of an eye, a field of razor-sharp nails come through the floor that you are standing on, and the escape route up the stairway becomes perilous as the stairs suddenly form into an array of sharp blades. 'Hiatus Phase' keeps you focused and light-footed, so you can manage the jump up to the next floor.

However the next stirring event quickly follows. The moment you feel safe, a giant golden net unexpectedly launches from every direction and traps you in the middle of the room, hung over the floor. As if this wasn't enough, the mob is rushing back again - armed with bows and arrows. But the varied atmosphere of 'All In CST', its floating pads and filtered breaks energize you, and so you are able to make a getaway from the most lethal attack.

After dodging the giant blades suddenly swinging in from each side, you are finally there. The golden cage and its arcane content. The warmth of 'Conback' and its sparkling pads slowly fill the room as you open up the cage. Another trap, or a bright future? Find out... More

The talented producer and sound designer that is Farron is an artist also known as Lachriz, Quiem and Twuan and has made notable moves on Forbidden Planet, Renascence, and his own Shaw Cuts label. The good folk at Kimochi sign up his widescreen sounds here on a gorgeous 7 track 12" that mixes up plenty of slick techno & ambient styles. There are spacious and jittery rhythms with moody ambient pads, immersive and beatless dreamscapes, dubbed out rhythms and body-popping broken beat workouts with war undercurrents of sub-bass. It's a stylish record that is captivating throughout and looks as good as it sounds with its hand-sprayed sleeve. More

The fourth instalment on Berlin-based Savy Records comes courtesy of Farron, a Bavarian producer, live act and founder of the Shaw Cuts label. 'Sparking In Silence' is his first outing on Savy and demonstrates a meeting of minds between the two imprints, with both Farron and Savy founder IDA sharing a similar musical ethos and aesthetic. Across the versatile and dynamic four-track EP, Farron displays his intuitive production skills, wielding techno, breaks, and clever, creative rhythms to craft moments that stretch across a night-long journey in the club. 'Sparking In Silence' opens with 'Artura', a raw and moody analogue old-school Berghain banger, boasting addictive, crispy 909 hi-hats designed to elevate and invigorate the dance floor. 'Radioactive Sepp' takes on a gorgeous, groove-laden tone, with squelchy synths and a punctuated rhythm. On the flip side, the mood is peak emotive and epitomises the Savy label sound, with 'Home As Wide' gliding on sublime pads and intoxicating breaks. The EP closes with 'Naviar', a cosmic-leaning track that rounds out this richly nuanced and highly memorable record. More

With the VOI 031 Voitax enters a new series of releases that will continue to expand the labels explorative musical and visual output with more talent. The series kicks of with no one less than IMOGEN, who was bursting out on the scene only a few years ago. Ever since, she established herself as an ambitious selector behind the decks and became a prominent figure in the world of dance music. Her first solo EP "What?" on Voitax presents a strong package of five tracks that clearly reflect the influence of her homelands prosperous electronic music heritage. A distinguished set of breaks are fusionend with Electro, IDM, and Hardcore without ever loosing touch to its groovy rhythmics. While this release is certainly loaded with strong dance floor material, the quality of her production process remains remarkable. The roughness and edginess of the entire EP reveal a strong connection to her 808 and modular system, that helped to create unique textures and granular soundscapes. Instead of resampling UK sample packs over and over again, IMOGEN is ambitious to create her own signature sound through a sequence of personalized studio equipment. With this approach she manages to fusion a punky style of 90's rave culture with sophisticated futuristic sound processing. Each track meets a different atmosphere, as the approach to rhythm, speed, sound and arrangement evolves from the beginning to the end - yet, they all remain part of the same story. With the VOI 030 - "Sense", the project Z.I.P.P.O enters a new sphere within its own sound direction. This release is characterized by IDM texture work, glitchy percussion and drum patterns, that find their room within deep atmospheric spaces and carefully placed delay programming. Certainly, recognizable is Maffei's eclectic taste for more complex electronic bits, which are also known from his more demanding DJ sets. "Sense" brings together different factettes of his nicely equipped studio arrangement, as you get to hear a range of grainy saturated hardware synthesis to innovative and more complex sound design. The sound of this record combines a bit of everything while keeping its very own character. If you like to give it a name, then it might feel like Aphex Twin meets Doppler Effekt and Pan Sonic. More

Arad, real name Dara Smith, first joined the VOITAX catalogue in June 2020. Back then, the Irish artist served us up with "Radiance Haze" - a 6-track EP, spanning from heavy-hitting breaks to the ethereal ambience, with heavy features of Smith's vocals. Known for his multidisciplinary vision on music, he has also previously made seminal moves with his work as one half of Lakker, alongside Eomac, dropping groundbreaking music on heavyweight labels such as R&S, Blueprint and Stroboscopic Artefacts. For his second EP on VOITAX, Smith now returns with five beautifully crafted tracks that he titles "Augmented Fantasy". While following a similar approach, he does not fail to expand his repertoire of celestial dream-like atmospheres, which he carefully surrounds with a whole variety of vocals, and accurately placed broken drum patterns. In addition to his own singing, Arad also presents two impressive collaboration tracks, in which one of them features the voice of Stine Omar, also widely known as one half the Berlin-based pop duo EASTER. Driving rhythmics and processed, grainy vocals turn this piece into guaranteed hit material. Another collaboration with the befriended vocalist and music producer Nina Hynes serves as a touching closing chapter for this brilliantly produced, eclectic 5-tracker. All pieces are perfectly glued together while keeping their very individual character and soundscapes. The listener is certainly left with an augmented fantasy, as well as a curiosity to hear more to come from the Irish talent. More

With the VOI 029 we are presenting the UK-based Mercy System, also known as Adam Crawford. Growing up in a small town on the outskirts of Manchester, he brings a dark, swung, early dubstep influence to his beats. With "Recognise" Crawford now lands his debut EP on Voitax, a personal project that represents his patiently accumulated skill set in sound design, as part of an excellently produced dystopian UK Bass four-tracker. This powerful package combines high-definition sample work with outstanding arrangements. With the right eye for voice shaping, crowned with beautifully placed drone delays, dense bass, and broken drum patterns, this EP also explores the realms of Dubstep nuanced with UK Garage, Grime, and Dancehall, while keeping its unique character. We are thrilled to hear more to come from this newbie among the UK Bass producers. More
