1.11SOUND GATHERING TRIP
Canadian producer Dylan Khotin-Foote has kept his Khotin alias going for the better part of a decade; the impressionistic electronic project shifts with the movements in his life. Sometimes it leads, like when the club-friendly grooves of 2014's Hello World immersed him in the heart of Vancouver's underground dance scene, and sometimes it follows, like 2018's Beautiful You, a downtempo salve for DJ fatigue. His melodic sensibility and playful ear for atmosphere remain the rippling core of the project's fingerprint; whether beat-driven or ambient, a foggy smear or a dusted and pristine print, a Khotin track has a distinct and instantly recognizable swirl. During and after the 2020 release of Finds You Well, his second LP on Ghostly International, Khotin-Foote settled back into a slower vibe in his hometown of Ed- monton. Even before the pandemic, his pivots to softer production, and away from DJing, left him with fewer opportunities in Vancouver and club bookings overall, and as a self-identifying introvert, he was fine with that. But the change of pace did open space for Khotin-Foote to grapple with concepts of adulthood and career. At his lowest, he almost walked off this musical path altogether; instead, he doubled down on the craft _ the tone, pacing, and dynamism of new material _ arriving at a definitive full-length. With Release Spirit, Khotin releases himself from the pressure of expectation, fusing and refining everything we know about his music. The warmth and familiarity of Khotin's dreamy, dulcet style meet new ideas and frameworks, a natural progression, a modest revelation; Khotin confirms it is okay to move slowly and he's never sounded better doing it. The album title borrows from the "release spirit" mechanic in the video game World of Warcraft. When players die, they are prompted to release their spirit and return as ghosts to find their corpses and come back to life. Khotin sees it as a worthy metaphor for the impending change his return home presented and the resulting process of purging artistic expectations to find his creative self again. On this go- around, he is freer, more playful, and more intentional within his palette of warped synth, breakbeats, and piano sounds _ including the classic Casio SK-1 presets he's used since the start _ mingling with wistful samples, field recordings, and other abstract snippets. For the first time, he enlisted Nik Kozub to do the mix and assist with sequencing. Khotin-Foote has long worked with the Edmonton-based musician and engineer in the mastering phase, as well as their days co-running the label Normals Welcome, and this time was able to involve his ears earlier given their newfound proximity. "I think it's my best sounding record to date." We begin on "HV Road" or Happy Valley Road, where Khotin-Foote spent time during a family vacation in British Columbia's Okanagan Lake. His plans to record crickets at night are quickly foiled by his younger siblings; the cute exchange orients the listener to a core memory of sorts, setting the tone of universally understood warmth and wonder that has defined some of Khotin's most transportive tracks. Hazy percussion takes hold, and we are swept further into the wisp of "Lovely," a grooving, melodic standout built on the interplay between the beat and human voice-like hums. Khotin knows this zone well; equally suited for a reverie or a club warm-up. The bubbling atmosphere and absurdity of "3 pz" offer a cosmic/comic interlude and also speak to reflections on his family's move to Canada two generations ago, and the audio tutorials they used to learn English. "I can only imagine my grandpar- ents repeating some of the bizarre phrases." "Fountain, Growth" finds Khotin in collaboration with Montreal's Tess Roby (Dawn to Dawn) for the project's first-ever vocal track. Roby's soft cadence echoes atop spiraling air pockets of rhythmic production, lending a breezy, almost shoegaze pop feel. Throughout the single and the album, wind gusts between the compositional layers, akin to the roaming spirits of its namesake, curving around the birdsong of "Life Mask" and seamlessly reaching "Unlimited <3." The latter bumps in slow motion; disembodied whirrs from his Casio collide with 808 drums and sub-bass for a vibe that teeters on trap and instrumental hip-hop. Release Spirit rests in a dream sequence. Oscillating synth lines dance around the heartbeat of "Techno Creep," a hyperactive REM state before the digitized ambient sprawl of "My Same Size." In the final pass, Khotin imagines transcontinental travel from the glow of his screen. He recorded "Sound Gathering Trip" to soundtrack a genre of YouTube videos he's taken to that follows train routes through Europe and Japan. The scene is serene and moving; piano keys warble as static-filled sound design shimmers off the rails, from cityscapes to the countryside, an introspective ride through a world beyond his bedroom. It doubles as an apt parting image for Khotin's project as a whole: dreaming big but happiest when riffing on the details, shaping environments from the inside out. Over the last decade, he has stretched from his core in Edmonton, leaving a trace in Vancouver and beyond; but when all signs point home, he loops back to see it all from a different vantage, revitalized, refined, and free. Edmonton now Vancouver-based producer Khotin keeps his head in similar clouds as those on 2014’s “Hello World” cassette with a four track 12” of deep, reflective 707 house. “Baikal Acid” gets introspective on both sides—Side A features both a beat-focused and ambient rework of wintery, transitional zoner “Recycle”, and melodies are pushed similarly to the foreground on the B side where the EP’s title track and “Human Voice” further the dance-friendly lonerisms and sequenced realness of these late night hybrid moods.

Originally released in 2023 via a humble run of 100 cassette tapes, c-thru's debut album “The Otherworld” is now available on black vinyl with a full colour jacket designed by Vancouver based illustrator Tylor Macmillan.
C-thru - The Otherworld is a collection of introspective cosmic-leaning dance music that gives a healthy nod to the golden era of trance, ambient, and downtempo from Austin, Texas-based producer Jesse Edwards. Inactive for several years, these 10 tracks mark a new chapter for Jesse Edwards. Previous works include his well-received psychedelic project, Red Morning Chorus, that included Boards of Canada amongst its fans. Edwards began his musical journey in the late 90s playing shoegaze and experimental music with Jessica Bailiff (Kranky). The pair collaborated on several albums together, including works with Flying Saucer Attack, His Name is Alive, and Odd Nosdam (Anticon).
Essential listening for anyone enamoured with the golden era of futuristic audio. More

ZG - The Rising
Good news! Pacific Rhythm returns with its first long player of 2024 on July 5th from ZG, a collaborative effort from Zansika Lachhani and Grant (aka Tony from Frank & Tony). The LP titled “Out Of The Unknown” is the followup to the duo’s first incredibly well-received self-titled LP that landed back on NYC-based label Scissor & Thread in 2022.
Over the course of 6 tracks, ZG takes their sound a step further, building rich, deep, and complex rhythm patterns paired with thoughtful and unexpected musical arrangements. The voice of Zansika ties it all together to create a unique and singular vision of modern deep dance music informed by the duo’s life-long musical journey.
“Out Of The Unknown” effortlessly flows through dramatic atmospheric downtempo landscapes, MPC-style beatmaking, late 90’s deep house, and beautifully builds a bridge between UK and US-inspired sounds. Enjoy the trip! It’s certainly a beautiful one. More

Pacific Rhythm is elated to present a grounding offering from Oakland's Space Ghost entitled Private Paradise as our first release of 2022. The LP is an ode to Space Ghost's time spent at Sea Ranch on the Northern California coast, a place he and his partner visit to refresh their spirit and regain optimism and enthusiasm for the outside world.
Private Paradise possesses a rare ability to restore, rejuvenate, and inspire through each listen and is something we've only grown more and more fond of during the unforeseen complications we encountered during its release over the past two years. It's a piece of music that feels like a perfect nod to where we've been musically for the past 8 years and where we see ourselves heading in the future. Deep, contemplative, and uplifting audio that compels its listeners to focus on the positive forces in the world and the power of being present in a moment. More

Repress coming end of April!
“Other Phases Of Sleep” is Amsterdam based artist Kennedy’s first excursion beyond his ever-consistent imprint “Dream Machine”. On this EP he further explores the ethos behind his creative process he describes as - "a series of thoughts, sensations and sounds occurring from a person's mind, translated by machines."
The EP calls to mind the effervescent and driving energy of early Metroplex material while also paying homage to the Vancouver Sound and the optimistic vibe of the early 90s. Playful, sophisticated, and life-affirming dance music for those looking to uplift their mind, body, and soul.
Pacific Rhythm alumni Space Ghost rounds out the EP with a masterful remix of “Asleep” that slows the energy down to a crawl and leans into his love of UK Street Soul and cosmic flourishes. More

Pacific Rhythm is elated to announce the forthcoming release of “Exiles”, a deeply life-affirming and introspective four-tracker from one of electronic music's most prolific duos, Frank & Tony. This EP also marks the first release from the pair outside of their own imprint Scissor & Thread. Back in 2021 they approached us with the intention of contributing something that felt like a natural part of our catalog and it's safe to say they arrived right at home.
“Exiles” further explores the dubby, subtle energy they've crafted since the project began in 2012 and refines it down to the pure essence of genre. It's a deeply rewarding listen and we believe It's a wonderful addition to the on-going soundscape we've been building for the last decade with Pacific Rhythm. More

Pacific Rhythm is honoured to share the debut self-titled EP from Inner Flight, a duo comprised of Cooper Saver and Chris Macintyre. Inner Flight began as a long-distance collaboration during 2020 inspired by rural Canadian landscapes, natural beauty, and a myriad of musical fluencies spanning The Second Summer of Love, Andrew Weatherall, early Factory Records, and the deeper corners of the 4AD catalog.
It has since grown into an introspective and sometimes ecstatic body of work that we're elated to share with the world. Elevate your state of being with this idyllic soundscape from two of North America's finest vibe practitioners. More

Fresh and direct from Toronto, Pacific Rhythm is pleased to welcome Emissive (aka Evan Vincent) for a solo cruise on the label. While Vincent has appeared on the label twice as part of house music duo Active Surplus (alongside Ian Syrett), this new EP entitled Wave Science sees the young musician push his sound into warmer and more melodic waters. Vincent says the new tracks pay tribute to the Black American roots of electronic music; a historical fact the producer says is an ongoing source of motivation and inspiration in his work.
Indeed, this new four-tracker sees Emissive bring in a pinch of futuristic boogie and cosmic funk to his dancefloor recipe—versatile flavours that should go down quite well at a variety of Dance Opportunities in the very near future! All of the tunes were composed and mixed at Vincent’s home studio in Canada’s largest city, with the tracks getting a warm, Hi-Fi mixdown via Syrett’s Nagra IV reel-to-reel. Tech talk aside, Vincent says he wanted to avoid over-analyzing the production and instead summon the spirits of dance, love and seasonal warmth. Or as the artist himself says: “Less thinking, more feeling.” Check it out and we’re sure you’ll agree his approach paid off! More

Jesse Futerman Ft. Beverly Glenn-Copelan - No Title
Jesse Futerman makes his Pacific Rhythm debut with a life-affirming slice of music lovingly crafted in Canada’s French quarter in the summer of 2019. On "Luckey," the Montreal producer reunites with his good friend Beverly Glenn-Copeland—a Canadian music legend whose keyboard-inflected outsider folk has been making waves across the world recently—and a cast of guest musicians for a song full of vibrant emotion and plush instrumentation, as Futerman works with an ensemble playing cello, saxophone, bass, and vintage hardware to great effect. There's a melancholy tinge to the swooning synths, but the infectious vocals and pitter-patter drums are uplifting and reassuring. "Luckey" is the kind of track that just radiates contentment, joy and gratitude—Futerman himself says he teared up laying down Justin Wright's cello, which gives you an idea of the vibes contained herein. The release also comes with a beautiful reimagining from Peaking Lights, who puts a dubbed-out spin on the track, like '80s post-disco via '90s Afro-cosmic Ibiza tracks, rounding off an EP whose classic touch and classy arrangements will surely elevate any individual who is ?Luckey ?enough to cross paths with it.

Pacific Rhythm is once again reaching across the country to the Toronto megacity. Active Surplus is the duo of Evan Vincent (AKA Emissive) and Ian Syrett, who also appear on the fourth volume of Rhythms Of The Pacific. Their new self-titled EP is their love letter to the house music sound that first sprouted from the West Coast. It's laid-back, groovy and touched with lovely instrumentation, like the plucked strings on "Meera," a heartfelt tribute to a loved one. "Meera" and the billowing groove of "Ambrosia" might remind you of early Pacific Rhythm releases, with dainty arrangements and chords that waft across the rhythm section.
But Active Surplus put their own spin on things. The EP was heavily inspired by the stuttering drum patterns of Baltimore club, which undergird each track in subtle but noticeable ways, making the grooves that much skippier and slippier. A sampled performance from a Nomadic tribe appears on "Yeye," while the looped woodwinds and cool-blue keyboards offer a sweet melodic hook on the irresistible "One Beyond." There's a confident, naturalistic quality to these rippling grooves and silky sounds, which the duo credit to an obsession with water. After all, in their words, "we might not live by the ocean, but we're all H20 on the inside."

Good news! The esteemed Rhythms Of The Pacific series returns with its first new edition in three years, showing off the freshest sounds from the Canadian Riviera all the way to The Big Smoke. Khotin returns to the series after two blockbuster ambient albums—one of which was re-released by Ghostly International—and shows how his melodic gift still carries over to dance music with a piano house track that feels as dreamy as an old Vincent Floyd jam.
Wolfey makes his debut on Pacific Rhythm with a chilled-out, Joey Negro-style disco house track that sounds like it was made for a Manhattan lounge in the late '90s. And we extend another olive branch to the East Coast after releases from ANF, Ex-Terrestrial and Jump Source with Toronto's Active Surplus. The duo delivers a jaunty tune whose quirky samples and synth horns give you an idea of what to expect when we release their debut EP in the coming months. And have you heard of Chapters? That's okay, we haven't either—but if you've been out in Vancouver at all the last few years, you've probably heard their incredible, addictive dubby house track "Ray Trace." Lazy but propulsive, melodic but minimal, it defines what Rhythms Of The Pacific is all about: relaxed, quietly inventive and essential house music.
Thanks for listening!
