Will Saul - No Title
For Phonica’s landmark 25th main label release we present the latest 12” from Will Saul.
Will is known to many as the man behind Aus Music and prior to that Simple Records as well as an excellent recent mix for the highly respected DJ-Kicks series. If that wasn’t enough to keep him busy he has produced a sizable back-catalogue for his own labels and the likes of Kompakt, Buzzin’ Fly and Systematic.
Will’s relationship with Phonica goes back a long time, as a core member of staff he worked in the shop in its early days and needless to say, we’ve been following his career since day one, so it feels right that he returns to Phonica, though this time as an artist on our main label.
A prolific producer, he’s explored everything from Micro-House and Minimal Techno to Deep House and Acid. For the ‘Lakeside EP’, Will unleashes three peak-time House tracks, starting off with the anthemic ‘For Joanie’ and its heartfelt vocal loops, onto the uplifting and euphoric ‘Drama’ before rounding the record off with the late 80s electro-pop vibes of ‘Never Enough’.

Release Info:
Will Saul is a key figure in UK dance music. Approaching his twentieth anniversary as a DJ, producer and label founder, Saul has helped break the career of key artists such as Leon Vynehall, Midland and Dusky via his Aus Music label, has himself played some of the world’s finest nightclubs and contributed to !K7’s storied ‘DJ Kicks’ mix series, which he also curates.
Finally returning to the production fold himself with his first full-length album in thirteen years, ‘Open Too Close’ is a condensed trip through the influences, discovery and sense of history that have helped shape his career and drive a forward-facing, unblinking passion for new music. The record’s concept reflects Will’s enormous skill and knowledge as a DJ, and as it’s title suggests, “"represents what I play in a club if an 8 hour set was condensed into 10 tracks.”
Having held residencies and made regular appearances at some of the world’s finest clubs including The End and Fabric in London, Panorama Bar in Berlin, Trouw in Amsterdam and Robert Johnson in Offenbach, Saul is uniquely qualified but this refreshingly straightforward approach. Eschewing the lingering, almost cliched expectations for a dance artist to create an album “that sounds good at home, as well as in the club”, ‘Open Too Close’ instead draws on the timeless futurism at the heart of the music that drew Saul into electronic music culture. Simply put, futuristic, melancholic sci-fi soundscapes meets stripped back raw sample driven house music, all executed with the precision and panache of an artist who truly understands how to move a dancefloor

Release Info
'Bugs' is AUS label owner Will Saul's first solo EP in over 4 years and follows his inaugural release on new Aus compilation series, Inside Out. Here's Will on the A side.... 'Bugs' is inspired as much by dancing at Plastic People/Co-op to the Bugz In The Attic as is it is by Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra track Bugs In The Bass Bin. Hopefully I bring my own twist to these key influences...... 'The Map Room' tumbles with big, swinging drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout before Matt Karmill takes 'Bugs' off on a linear dubbed out excursion to complete the package....

Mr. Beatnick - Call Of The Wild
Inside Out is a brand new series that invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. Coming from Aus Music label head and DJ-Kicks curator Will Saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. The mix will be release digitally and on CD, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl. Each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. It is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, A&R as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. Depending on who is at the helm, Inside Out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while DJs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. The results will be a window into an artist's world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album. The idea stems from Will Saul's own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. That feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer. For Will's mix he enlists an array of artists who he's worked with over the years, many of whom have released on one of his labels in that time. These include the likes of Lone, Pearson Sound, Move D, Gerd, Youandewan, Martyn, Falty DL, Dauwd, Appleblim and Marquis Hawkes.

Info
Up next for Aus is label head Will Saul. Following his vocal heavy collaboration album as CLOSE for !K7 last year this 12" see's Will venture back to the dance floor for some light relief. With anticipation for the release of his DJ-Kicks mix in June growing, he lets these two tracks loose to tide listeners over. The high-octane "Pedal Power", which also features in his DJ-Kicks mix, and the weighty but spacious "Valhalla". Both tracks were born out of a number of live jams on a small outboard setup with a laptop used only to record. A Jomox Xbase 999 drum machine triggering a Moog Minitaur for bass, all running through a number of highly tweak-able pedals and outboard fx units with a Roland Juno for pads. It was a refreshing low maintenance change for Will following the CLOSE album and there will be a few more 12"s of this ilk released over the coming months. This summer sees Will embark on an extensive world tour to promote his DJ Kicks album and look out for another CLOSE EP at the end of August which features 3 collaborative tracks with Second Storey (Houndstooth) and vocalist Kid A with an extra special remix from Seven Davis Junior

Will Saul, - Speak & Spell
For the final of the Simple Sounds EP, we bring in the disco courtesy of two of Will’s favourite fellow artists. Putsch 79 take Will’s album cut ‘Speak & Spell’ deeper and darker but maintain Will’s original chord progression. The undulating dark disco mix slowly evolves into a fabulous euphoric crescendo that’s already proving to be irresistible to our feet. On the flip, Northern lads 2020 Soundsystem, led by Ralph Lawson and Dubble D, re-interpret Will’s underground classic Pause in their signature live style. Not to be missed is that p-funk keyboard solo in the last quarter! Putsch 79 are two young Finnish freaks, rocking shit on Clone Records and beyond. They're all about warm grooving disco beats, throbbing basslines and smooth chords with influences from techno and house – a match made in heaven for us! 2020 Soundsystem are bloody good live and you should check them out at one of Europe’s fine discoteques.

Will Saul, - Out There
On this EP is Will and Tam Cooper’s exclusive new track ‘Out There’ and the Gui Boratto remix of their ‘Sequential Circus’. Out There features an arppegiated chord sequence that drives the track to the breakdown, where the melody switches from soulful to dirty ol’ euphoric. The bassline playfully moves around with the chords while sweeping old school strings take us home. It features an
unwitting vocal performance from one of Will’s favorite producers.... Sequential Circus (Gui Borrato remix) Taking just one of Will’s original chords and a shard of the melody Gui builds one of his trademark pulsating, futuristic grooves before opening out the full melody to create an epic dancefloor moment. Brazillian Gui Boratto is an architect, musician, composer and prolific producer. From 2005 he dedicated himself to his own productions and compositions. He came to the attention of the wider electronic community through his releases on Kompakt, where he released his stunning debut album ‘Chromophobia’ to general critical acclaim that saw him wowing the best clubs of the world with his colourful live performances.

Will Saul, - 3000 AD
Will Saul presents ‘Simple Sounds’, a double CD that serves as an insight into where both of his influential labels stand in 2007, five years after Simple’s creation. Will has gained an admirable reputation over the last few years as not only a show-stealing DJ, but also a talented A&R and producer. His previous albums for the label include ‘Simple One’, the first label compilation that elegantly encapsulated the sound of Simple, and his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Space Between’, a soulful and melodic journey geared towards home listening rather than the dancefloor. He is resident at The End in London and Weekend in Berlin, and most recently has remixed for Freerange, Initial Cuts, Fresh Meat and Phonique’s summer anthem ‘Bang’ on Dessous. Acting as A&R, artist and DJ for the project, his intention is to blur the distinction between the traditional artist LP and DJ mix. Will contributes new and exclusive tracks, selects remixers to work on some of his older material and sequences a mix that captures the sound of both of his labels, Simple and Aus. CD 1 exhibits Will as an artist and A&R. Influential artists such as Partial Arts, Gui Boratto, 2020Soundsystem and Wahoo (Dixon from Innervisions) are invited to reinterpret tracks from the catalogue and Will has produced four new tracks for the project. On opener ‘3000 AD’ a soothing synth breeze unveils space soon occupied by spasmodic, shifting percussion and liquid bass. ‘Kitt’s muted guitar strides through a wilderness of ghostly echoes and metallic glitches. The Partial Arts remix of Will & Lee Jones ‘Hug The Scary’ plunges into the deep, as futurist frequencies radiate and escalate into a stringed choral crescendo. Wahoo’s take on Will’s sublime ‘Mbira’ offers a densely layered latin rhythm with melodies that hark back to the early days of Detroit, before Sideshow sends ‘Sequential Circus’ floating off on a cloud of dub. ‘Cubrika’ continues with themes of space and compression, opening with epic synth lines and driven to its climax by laser pulses and bubbling bass. ‘Out There’ peaks with euphoric arpeggio lines, before Gui Boratto dives headlong into deep melodic techno with his fresh rework of ‘Sequential Circus’. Will’s bumping remix of Chicken Lips ‘Motion Sickness’ is low riding electronic house, that leads us 20:20 Soundsystem’s closing take on ‘Pause’, which slathers the original with electric funk. All the tracks have been lovingly re-edited by Will with the aim of ensuring a better home listen. On CD 2, contrast brings definition, and this mix serves to make it clear that Aus is the organic to Simple’s electronic; two polar opposites seamlessly reconciled by Will’s careful track sequencing – a fitting reflection of his successful running of both labels. Warm, spacious, immersive and with loose traces of disco, soon the groove gets jacked and moves from Aus, closer to Simple territory. The CD opens with Aus Music cuts from Lee Jones’ solo work as well as in his alter ego as part of Berlin bliss troupe My My. Sideshow then weighs in with two tracks, both taking on disco from his unique perspective, while Phonique, Jimpster and Spirit Catcher transport us back to the realm of Simple electronics over the past 5 years with radical interpretations of Simple mainstays. Canadian wunderkind Mathew Jonson and deep master John Tejada both dissect Sideshow, Will Saul revises Content, Sebo K & Metro take a turn then Motorcitysoul and Alexkid close the curtains on a real high.Further to the CD, 3 vinyl EPs will be released over the Autumn with the exclusive tracks and remixes commissioned for Simple Sounds plus a ‘vinyl only’ Putsch 79 rework of ‘Speak & Spell’. The Simple Sounds tour commences at the end of the summer – heading first to Bestival then on to Brazil and back across Europe visiting Sankeys, Basics, Watergate and a host of other great spots all the way to Russia.

System Olympia - A Mezzanotte
Four tracks from '20 Years Of Phonica' on limited 12" vinyl!
Shop regular and ever-rising star Nyra comes through with the pumping club banger ‘Broken Needs’, channelling early 90’s Hacienda sounds and hazy Ibiza memories.
Shanti Celeste offers her take on the Chilean producer Niños Indigo’s track ‘Luna’ which featured on her album ‘Vuduwave’, a 2017 release on Phonica Records Special Editions. Shanti’s mix takes the delicate organic atmospherics of the original track adding her bass-heavy rhythm and combining the intricate melodies to create a hypnotic effect.
Next up, the Amsterdam-based duo Dam Swindle bring the party with the epic ‘Allright (Just a Tribute)’ a no nonsense feel good slice of club magic. One of the duo’s most effective productions: DJ bag-ready, perfectly balanced house music.
Finally, Italian synth queen System Olympia delivers us ‘A Mezzanotte’, hitting the perfect note between early Italo pop, and US R’n’b. More

One of our favourite producers to explode onto the scene in the last few years, Gene On Earth turns in some solid energy in the form of ‘Club Jacket’. Sounding truly contemporary and classic at the same time, the track recalls both Jeremy Sylvester and MK.
With 12”s on Slow Life, Small Hours, Voyage, Oscillat Music, & In Dust We Trust nothing is stopping L.A. born, Berlin-based, DJ and producer Huerta. With his ‘Hit the Bit’ track, he gives us a bona-fide floor-filling house anthem.

Willow - Willbush
Four tracks from '20 Years Of Phonica' on limited 12" vinyl!
We start off with a collaboration from Paramida & E-Talking. Paramida is the well-respected head of the Love on the Rocks label whilst E-Talking is the pseudonym of Emmanuel Corre, one half of Nummer who have given us stunning releases over the year on their own label, AD93 and Going Good. ‘Read My Lips’ strikes the perfect balance of old-school warehouse acid and early morning Berlin dance floors.
Next up, Dauwd’s bass-heavy monster ‘Slam’. The US born, Berlin residing DJ & producer Dauwd has been pushing his sound through various styles and genres since the early 2010s. From dub-steppy and tech-house beginnings to his most recent house and dub-techno Psssh imprint outputs he has been driving record collectors crazy for his 12’s for over a decade!
On the flip, Daniel Avery's ‘Bell’ finds the Phantasy and Mute artist at his most contemplative and melodic; it’s streamlined stylings reminiscent of UK Artificial Intelligence 90s techno and Kompakt’s golden era.
Finally, Mancunian producer Willow’s ‘Willbush’ shows why she has been a leading name in the underground house scene for over a decade now, including releases on the renowned Workshop label. More

Kieran Jandu - From My Soul
Four tracks from '20 Years Of Phonica' on limited 12" vinyl!
At the forefront of jungle’s new wave, Tim Reaper joins forces with Comfort Zone on the drum & bass anthem ‘Subterranean’. One of the heaviest sonic technicians around, Reaper and his collaborator Comfort Zone offer up a quality tune, based around a familiar vocal sample.
Toby Tobias has been a long-time friend of the store, collaborating with the Phonica crew on one of their monthly DJ nights for almost a decade. A prolific produce under many pseudonyms, including Alphonse, and on the Rekids, Klasse Wrecks and Emotional Rescue labels, Toby’s ‘On My Mind’ contribution is a complex house-not-house, bassline-heavy wriggly groover that becomes more compelling at every listen.
NTS Radio presenter and Eglo artist Shy One has been attracting attention with an original sound that is a mixture of live percussion, and funk mixed with UK bass. Here, ’Uncle G’ offers exactly that, combining broken beat, heavy bass and jazz sensibilities for a breezy, refreshing offering.
Finally, our own Kieran Jandu rounds out the 12" with his ‘From My Soul’, a hypnotic house anthem. More

Australian producer Ben Sun joins Phonica’s main label with a solid four track EP of House music in its various forms, from slick Disco loopers to deep ambient tribal rhythms.
The now London-based Ben Davidson has a string of well-received records under his belt, under the aliases Benjamin Sun, Earth Patterns and now as Ben Sun. His regular outings on Delusions Of Grandeur and Voyeurhythm are particularly of note, as well as recent excursions on Utopia and Razor N Tape. We’re delighted to have him as part of the Phonica family now too!
The 12” starts with ‘Trip’, a gradually building filtered Disco teaser, with classy deep House number ‘Mellow Madness’ following up. On the flip is the sumptuously balearic roller ‘Glow’, before the record’s euphoric floor-filler ‘Siren’ rounds out the record in style. We have a feeling this particular earworm will be lingering in records bags (and USB sticks) for some time! More

Lea Lisa - Love To The End (Manchester Club Mix)
2
Lea Lisa - Love To The End (Sunset Mix)
After her stunning release on our deeper House focused Karakul label, we are over the moon to welcome back Swiss producer Lea Lisa on our main Phonica imprint.
The ‘Love To The End EP’ takes influence and inspiration from a particular early 90s UK Techno rarity by Mark Goddard titled ‘The End’ (The Truth EP), a beautiful and emotive take on the classic sound of UK Techno that’s been much loved and highly sought after for decades, even being a particular favourite of Aphex Twin. It’s an ode to the original, rather than a remix or cover. The two mixes re-imagine the sound of soulful and deep Techno, combining driving basslines and drum machine grooves with atmospheric and nostalgic synth lines.
On the A-Side’s ‘Manchester Club Mix’, the focus is laser focused on peaktime dancefloors with a slowly building level of euphoria matched with rolling drums until the breakdown chills the mood and the plucky, earth shaking bassline returns before the tension is released and the melodies float effortlessly around the pounding rhythm.
Over on the B-Side, the ‘Sunset Mix’ jacks up the drums with kicks and claps that shake your spine. The bassline rolls steadily throughout the mix but the melodic lines this time are more restrained, introspective and subtle, echoing and harking to past rave memories with ease... More

Warsaw-based Bartosz Kruczynski returns as Earth Trax to Phonica’s main label, following on from last year’s well received ‘L’Avventura’ 12”, this time in collaboration with regular production partner Newborn Jr.
The pair have created a string of brilliant records together, such as ‘Sax & Flute’ on Rhythm Section, ‘Mirage’ on Les Yeux Orange and ‘If You’ on Shall Not Fade. Bartosz also has a growing solo discography under his own name, along with a variety of aliases such as The Phantom, Pejzaz, and of course; Earth Trax.
The A side here leads with the title track ‘Truth’, in which rose-tinted reminiscences of the golden early 90s era of House music echo, with dubbed out diva vocals cascading over wide snares, 303 acid lines and that almighty bassline, appearing through shimmering delays and reverbs in a vision of bygone nights at the Hacienda or Shelleys. Next up is the ‘Back Alley mix’ or a traditional dub mix - everything you need from the main mix but less vocal and more plays on THAT bassline with dub effects.
On the flip, as its title suggests, ‘Old Way, New Way’ bridges the gap, combing the same bassline driven Chicago house stylings with the deep new age textures that have characterised previous releases from the pair, flutes and pads floating sweetly above jacking drum grooves, reminiscent of mid-90s Italo House. Finally, ‘And Then’ fulfils the transformation, with ethereal late night pads enveloping a more lofi rhythm section and more flute for a more subtle, end of night Don Carlos ‘Alone’ feel. More

It’s been 5 years since North Lake delivered the ‘Moonwalker’ 12” on Phonica’s main label and it’s telling that to this day it’s one of the most requested for a repress. That’s not to say he’s been idle in the years since then, his releases for Life & Death, Permanent Vacation and Ellum Audio have cemented his reputation as a trusted producer in the world of leftfield Techno.
North Lake is Michigan-based Isaac Delongchamp and his ‘Hearing Voices’ EP features four tracks that illustrate his influences, stretching from classic Detroit Techno to Deep House and even New Age and Ambient. In fact, these four tracks could work as a story, from the opening title track, ‘Hearing Voices’ through two peak-time housers into the after-hours vibe of the final track.
‘Hearing Voices’ is the standout here based on a beautiful looping keyboard melody which subtly grows, progressing and ascending to a deceptive moment of silence before returning to its original melody. Next up ‘Vibing To Your Vibe’ is a perfect combination of organic and electronic elements with little synth details and an 80s Electro vibe adding to the 4/4 groove.
On the flip, the simple but devastatingly effective Omar S-esque ‘Magic Ride’, the EP’s peak energy moment and the logical follow-up to his first Phonica release with Dixon-favourite ‘Marlborol Noir’. Finally, the record comes to an end with ‘Teenage Heartbreak’, a mellow, classy House production that works just as well on the dancefloor as well as home listening. More

More

Phonica Records welcomes Spanish producer extraordinaire Pional to it’s main label with the ‘XME / One Night Stand’ 12”. Pional is Miguel Barros and the Madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. With a string of well received solo releases on Hivern Discs, Permanent Vacation, Young Turks and Counter, remixing the likes of The xx, Chairlift, The Rapture, Prins Thomas and John Talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘Fin’ album ender ‘So Will Be Now...’ with) as well as DJing around the world, Pional has been keeping very busy indeed. For his Phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. On the A-side, ‘XME’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. The slower and more foreboding ‘Quiet Ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. On the other side, ‘One Night Stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. The ‘Slow Drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.
