Johannes Bügeleisen - Afterhours (L.Zylberberg Bathmix)
You know, when you've pulled too hard on the lollipop all night and you're left with only two options, the almost controlled landing or the one that fractures what little consideration you have left in humanity and yourself. Welcome to the new BFDM and the abyss of sensualities it provides. The track which offers the reading line of the opus is that of Johannes Bügeleisen, musician who has scoured the Berlin nights for more than 10 years, remaining at all times and circumstances endowed with a big heart and an immense class. A hymn to languorous afterhours, which is completed by a bathmix of the same song, proposed by another important figure of the Neukölln scene: Leo Zylberberg. The latter offers us a version like a scuba dive where the soap slips out of the hands into the bathtub, always during those blue hours where nocturnal and diurnal are not yet clearly defined.

Repress!
Originally designed as a friend-to-friend, unofficial comp to be played on your car system by the parking lot of some local minimarket with the woofers set to eleven, mullet in the wind and cans of energy drinks pouring, J-ZBEL's longed-for debut LP 'Dog's Fart Is So Bad The Cat Throws Up' (we'll leave you judge as to whether we're talking Schrödinger vs Pavlov theories here) is due for imminent landing in all good record stores, as foretold by a Mayan prophecy from circa 2000 BC.
Delving in iconoclastic themes and pop culture at its most sketchy and accidentally inspiring, the enigmatic Lyon-based trio enters the melee all horsepowers roaring and laser-guns blazing - delivering twelve cuts that span the broadest sonic spectrum as they fracture their way across changing sonic reliefs, from trancey
adrenaline rushes to 303-driven dance epics, through hyperfuturistic hardcore turns and further knee-buckling, breaksy manoeuvres.
Fruit of their trademark hybrid live and studio approach, some of the album's tracks were originally and exclusively conceived for live use, whilst another part has been produced in the studio from start to finish. The Easternmost-sounding jacking tune and album highlight 'Sebulba' feat. (faux-)Bristolian from a different mother Simo Cell was actually recorded last year during the latter's residency at Trempolino, in Nantes.
Layered with a richly hued palette of elements, J-ZBEL’s debut long-player melds choice samples of video-game soundtracks (check the Metal Gear alert noise and Mortal Kombat samples on 'Bertrand Au Mont D'Or' and 'Mortel Kombat'), playful polyrhythmic touches ('Le Riddim du Bardouin'), no-nonsense Goa trance inspiration ('Tunnel Vision'), but also liquid DnB and organically-grown junglisms ('Pardon Mouloud', 'Excremangue', 'Diablo Verde Part II') and - to top it all off in the most spectacular manner - the stadium-sized gabber madness of 'The J-ZBEL Anthem', sure to leave wisps of vapour in its wake. The Pilotwings - Shiva dans le Jura (feat Bigoudi)
Following their first album in 2016, The Pilotwings are back – having gone from two to three members - with the LP « Les Charismatiques » on the infamous Brothers From Different Mothers label.
As witty and sparkling as ever, the trio’s given birth to a 2020 millesime that dares to oscillate from synth-pop to digit dub, psych-rock and new-age ; combining acoustic sounds with traditional music, all tainted with an 80s summer-hit influence…
As whacky as it may sound at first listen through its melting-pot of personal anecdotes and dated corporate speeches, the album does succeed in avoiding the totally-offbeat ; by adjusting sensibilities and altering the way one listens to music these days, these tracks transcend and fly. Guided by anti-conformist synth-sounds, « Les Charismatiques » embarks on the path towards the gilded light of remission and spiritual rebirth !
New collaborations have also emerged on this album from long-lasting friendships but also impromptu meetings, with HAJJ firstly, the Dawn Records’ boss who needs no introduction, but also with their Lyon friend Amélie Arcuri alias Bigoudi, half of Schmilblick ; or more surprising, with the cult underground figure of Robert Lapassenkoff, crooner and singer from the 80s band of the same name who’s been recently re-issued on vinyle before joining the Pilotwings on tour.
5 years later the Pilotwings are back on BFDM with an album that seems ripe for tasting, like a fine wine with a mouthful of flavors. More
