minimal violence - U41A
Recorded in the Autumn of 2017 at their studio in Vancouver’s Deep Blue; “MVX / U41A” is the first new music from Minimal Violence to be released on Ninja Tune’s Technicolor imprint and the first to be recorded outside their usual home production space. The result is a record that intends to reduce pop music to its emotive qualities and apply that abstract nostalgia back into dance tracks. Their penchant for the heavier and more aggressive side of dance music is most evident in its infiltration of the duo’s often raw and disorientating live set. Formed in 2015 the duo, consisting of Ashlee Luk and Lida P, have a string of releases to date with labels such as Lobster Theremin, 1080p and Jungle Gym Records. Drawing on Luk’s years of experience playing in punk bands, they combine hardware sequencers, drum machines and synths, to weave together acid tinged compositions that derive inspiration from early electronic and minimal synth through to heavier UK rave and hardcore.

Release Info:
As the z-axis of our planet tilts away, and a gulf of dusty earth, air and searing fire is revealed before us, Minimal Violence holds a unflinching stare, unveiling upon us Phase Three in an act of pure psychic release. Consecutive of the destruction of Phase One and the restructuring of Phase Two it only seems appropriate that the third phase of the series finds the project reaching a state of transcendence and transition as it also aligns with the shift from a duo to the solo venture of Ash Luk following the departure of co-founder Lida P.
This third EP of the DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] <--- TRUST series launches straight into the 145 bpm stomper Flatline. It is a track founded by a family spirit, with lyrics co-written with Luk’s mother and their step-father Mad Johnny on vocals and guitar. It draws a hoarse chant of passion, ".. nothing matters .. I still love you .. resuscitation .. resurrection .." in answer to arching melodic euphoria. Cold (sex) follows down a scorched earth driveway into distorted whistles, detuned melodies and some of the best sequencer abuse out there.
We Suocate on the Violence of Light reveals perhaps the finest expedition so far in Minimal Violence’s particular vein of acid-singed euphoric trance. Its synths smeared and merged unholy, where the drums meddle with the tensions between drum and bass and nail to the ground four to the floor rhythm. Focus On That Form pummels hard within a deep noise volley, scratching hard to rid its environments of any longer lasting lustre.
As ever, the transformative sound of Minimal Violence emerges deep from fire. Denying any uncertain embers an escape route, Luk casts anew from a seemingly unending source of unique energy.

Minimal Violence return to Tresor Records with Phase Two of their DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] <--- TRUST series. This five-track 12" kicks off straight into the dust storm of Dreams 4 Sale, a Lynchian trip through explosive breakbeat manipulation, sirens and cries deep into the abyss.
True to form, Ashlee Luk and Lika P harness raw tensions and lock into the flow on Mankind. An EBM monster, its bass sequences lay writhing non-stop, over a beat in full propulsion. Drawing to a close, the kick drum falls out leaving a suspended room full of action.
The Canadian duo then follows up with the sensational Hard Delivery, a 175bpm hi-NRG gabber barrage. Smeared synths hint at a melody, like a pair of pitched-up foghorns beaten down in a harsh rhythm world, as disfigured barks amp up the pressure. Prey Drive is the most straight techno track, its industrial bassline a cornerstone to grip onto, as its elements pile in on top. Closing track 1992 wears its identity on its sleeve, a pure rave track inspired by the early 90s sound. Distorted drums and synthesised strings coat a gnarled breakbeat with paranoid malice.
Sounding like nothing else right now, its influences are chewed-up and spat-out. There is no sound capable of sitting still, just a mutant sonic environment of destructive movement.
TRACKLIST: A1. Dreams for Sale 03.34 A2. Mankind 03.48 B1. Hard Delivery 03.51 B2. Prey Drive 04.26 B3. 1992 03.18

Minimal Violence - B2. The Next Screen Is Death
Tresor Records is pleased to welcome Minimal Violence to the label, starting with the first chapter in a series of three records entitled DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] <--- TRUST to be released during the next 12 months. At the furthest edges of their idiosyncratic brand of ferocious hardware techno, this first EP, Phase One, reveals the Vancouver duo to be expertly out on a limb. Mirroring the explosive cut and thrust of their live sets, their recorded output extends a metaphysical rave.
Throughout, Ash Luk and Lida P cut their cinematic melodies into a clattering rave hole, unceasingly revising the gravitational pull in each direction. Ravebomb finds a route of no-nonsense with its unhinged endorphin rush of surging EBM style bass and rough-handed rhythms. It is followed up by an alternate version of Ravebomb, the Fire Mix, which casts its elements into a heady psychoactive cloud on a collision course with its kick drum.
Glimpses of a rhythmic waywardness coat Perfect Rendition, full of tape tics and wobble, with a push to 90s UK, beat experimentations and the pull of arching hookworms.
Closing out the EP is The Next Screen Is Death, with a dystopian 80s wave sound, where short snippets of sampled mush imbue disturbed synth stabs, while arpeggiated basses drive with momentum a feverous descent in tandem with trance-echoing melodies.

Impulsive and intuitive hardware house & techno from Vancouver duo minimal violence aka Ashlee Luk & Lida P. The five tracks on 'Night Gym' soundtrack urban landscapes; textured synths, heavy kicks, and dense polyrhythms come together to form the duo's own brand of outsider house. Citing influence from both minimal synth and Chicago house, Night Gym arrives hot off the heels of the duo's self titled ep on Dublin based First Second Label which closely examined the intersections that lay between punk and techno. Recorded in February/March 2016 in the duo's home studio, the instinctual nature of live work flow plays an important role in the duo's creative process. Utilizing hardware (SH-101, TR-606/505/707, Waldorf Blofeld, Juno-60, DX-21, MPC1000) in addition to sourced samples with final compositions compiled and manipulated in Ableton, Night Gym is an example of the duo's diverse interests and collaborative nature. The duo recruited visual support from Chicago based graphic designer Kevin McCaughey of NONPOROUS for the distinct imagery of Night Gym. As well he designed the poster that comes in the 12" and screen printed a limited run of long sleeve t-shirts available through Boot Boys Biz.

hieroglyphic being - Home 95
Earlier this year Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being released “The Disco’s Of Imhotep” album via Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint. Drawing on the energy and spirituality of Sun-Ra, Moss conducted his machines to create a raw, pulsating and meditative work that focused as much on the dancefloor as on the synapses. It was universally praised: “Sweaty and ecstatic, elevated and pure…” (Pitchfork - 8.0); “Frequently sublime” (Crack Magazine); “Fires the mind and soothes the soul...” (The Quietus) and earned Moss a thoroughly deserved” Album Of The Month” spot in Mixmag. Never one to rest on his laurels, Hieroglyphic Being returns to Technicolour on 11th November 2016 with an essential 12” two-tracker paying homage to “The Natives” of Chicago’s nascent and fertile electronic music scene in the 90s. Fiercely visceral and channelling the same “rhythmic cubist” approach, ‘This Is 4 The Rave Bangers’ and ‘HOME 95’ are proffered as “Reinterpretations or a Revisionist’s retrospective of the early 90's electronic music based in Chicago during the rise of Rave Culture from a sonic anthropological narrative”.

The taleneted Frenchman delivering quality House for the discoteque... Ninja Tune's singles label Technicolour welcomes Parisian producer Nathan Melja (formerly simply "Melja") to the fold with a 4-track 12" EP of instinctive, effortless and beautifully understated techno entitled "No No No". Released on 13th May 2016, it's a direct reflection of his future-facing vision teamed with a healthy respect for house and techno's forebears and innovators. You can stream the title track via the Technicolour soundcloud and preorder the 12" now. Flitting between Paris and NYC, Nathan made his mark with two superb 12"s for Mister Saturday Night and a sterling EP for Opal Tapes offshoot imprint Black Opal in 2014-15. His residency Dream Real at Parisian clubbing institution Batofar has featured the likes of Moiré (Werkdiscs / Spectral), Technicolour labelmate Florian Kupfer and Italian don Madteo.

Technicolour maintains it's impressive run of form with the Dollar EP by Newcastle based hardware addict NY*AK. Following up on an excellent 12" for Karakul - a Phonica Records sub-label - he channels the spirit of legendary rhythm architects Herbie Hancock, Theo Parrish, Kenny Dope and Lil' Louie Vega, collating four rough gems made using an MPC, Nord Lead 2, Roland SH101, Roland 606, Juno 106, Jen SX1000, Rhodes 88MK1 and with the help of Mark Hand on keys, Misumami on vocals and Ian Blevins. Each track packs incredible punch in the groove stakes, undoubtedly the characteristic that has attracted the likes of Moodymann, Seven Davis Jr and Gilles Peterson to NY*AK's music.

Florian Kupfer first burst into dance music consciousness with 2013’s insta-classic Lifetrax, filling much of the subsequent two years with a flurry of singles (more on L.I.E.S., an anonymous but hotly picked-up white label edit of Sade, plus efforts for Rush Hour’s No ‘Label’ and W.T. Records) and DJ gigs across Europe, Australia, the USA and Russia. He surfaces once again for Technicolour — Ninja Tune's singles label—with Explora, a four-track EP, brimming with punchy percussion, swatches of low-end menace, mechanical grind at a steady build, and a deep unidentifiable rumble. There is a certain darkness which pervades his body of work and Explora is no stranger to it, submerging the listener deep in the void somewhere between the crazed collectivity of the dancefloor and the inescapable solitude of the home that awaits. Inspired in equal parts by the solace of Berlin winter, dormant emotions following the 9/11 attacks and psychedelic experimentation, Kupfer proves once again that much magic can be made on a one-take hardware jam in his bedroom.

Little is known about the London-based producer and DJ who goes by the name of U, but that hasn’t quelled praise from bedroom heads, industry tastemakers and big name press alike. Audio arbiter George FitzGerald originally met U on a holiday in Greece and immediately commissioned a handful of 12”s, each brimming with trademark mechanical bliss, like pleasure tinged with menace. U has since gone on to release for Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sounds (both as a solo artist and in collaboration with Babe, Terror as BTU), being given the nod by The Guardian, Mixmag and The Line of Best Fit. ThIs newest effort, an EP to be released on Technicolour this summer, takes that same flavour and concentrates it. In a past life, U was turned away from a prestigious Berlin club with the words “this is our place, we decide who comes in.” Spinning this dismissal into the release and leading track titles, U traverses different tempos and sonic swatches: the cavernous thump of techno lament“Our Place,” a hollowed orchestra of bric-a-brac on “Oma,” the tail-end of euphoria gently glowing on “Easy Prayer,” and a slow descent into the comedown as “Arcane Fantasy” fades out. Unlike picky doormen, We Decide Who Comes In ushers you straight through the door.

Deep and tripping acid backed with some jazzed out drumworks on the flip... Limited to 400 copies and pretty damn bad ass! *Shop customers - 1 copy each only* the label say"Producer and boss of Mathematics records, Chicago's Jamal Moss a.k.a Hieroglyphic Being is a one-off musical explorer. Jamal's music takes cues from the EBM and House that played a huge part in the city's musical underground in the late eighties and early nineties, notably Ron Hardy and Adonis, but also Industrial, Avant-Jazz and Noise. His tireless schedule of rough low-key releases over the last 12 years and his intense, very physical, psychedelic music, have made him a key exponent or maybe even a pioneer of what's recently come to be named 'Outsider House', although he prefers the more Sun-Ra like descriptors of 'Rhythmic Cubism' and 'Cosmic Be-Bop'. His releases, much like his music, have straddled House labels and the more leftfield avant garde electronic imprints with ease. However his deeply held Afrofuturist intent and the discipline of his radical designs set him apart from the pack. Always moving forward, his music is an ever-evolving transmission from his mind to our bodies, or as he sees it, a form of meditation that the supple, tuned listener will enjoy immensely."
