Sales Note
Gary Beck returns to Mutual Rytm as he unveils a selection of impactful cuts across his debut 12'' on the label, 'Upside Criminal'.
Bek Audio boss and Glasgow techno mainstay Gary Beck has long been a key figure in the scene with a unique sound that has shaped a vast discography. One of the genre's best, with appearances across iconic institutions and collaborations with legendary talents, he is a definitive talent. Returning to SHDW's Mutual Rytm imprint, his new EP lands following his recent appearance on the label's 'Federation Of Rytm III' VA, with the tracks on the package proving as go-to favourites for the label boss over recent months.
''Mutual Rytm has been nothing short of inspirational to me over the last years. I've been playing almost
everything from the label, as the tracks really suited what I was selecting in my DJ sets. The high-quality output really got my juices going to create something for the label, and I was delighted when Marco liked what I sent. This EP signals exactly where I am musically. I'm an absolute sucker for tracks with relentless groovy energy and little breaks, so it felt like a perfect fit. Tracks from the EP have been an absolute joy to play in my sets recently,
and I'm so excited to deliver this EP on my current favourite label, Mutual Rytm.'' - Gary Beck.
The powerful 'Upside Criminal' kicks off with hammering drums and pounding hits that create an inescapable wall of sound that will dominate dance floors of any size. There is more loopy energy to 'Sambana' with its ever more jagged synth stabs and fizzing drum textures while 'Pepper Track' is a futuristic techno workout with rattling snares and mutant synth details peeling off the straight-up groove. 'Rejected' is built around trapped vocal fragments that swirl about the mix to a disorientating effect as the high-speed drums and sheet metal synths race onwards, 'while
Ghost' closes out with a subtle sense of uplifting celebration from the synths that rise up through rusty, rickety techno grooves. Digital Bonus 'Variation 6.1' offers another searing and funky techno stomp, once again providing an extra gem for digital purchasers.

When the house music phenomenon was beginning, Chicago DJs like Ron Hardy and New Yorkers such as Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan would edit records for their own purposes, removing the parts they felt to be superfluous, concentrating instead on extending grooves and hooks, often adding their own basic synth lines and toughening up the percussion with what have now become classic synthesizers and drum machines. Warehouse Classics Vol.1 holds 4 killer tracks going from obscure disco to new wave, first popularised at the Music Box and rarely heard anywhere else.
Sir Leon Greg (another incarnation of Perseus Traxx) jams out then reinforces some edits of forgotten classics with a raw & personal analogue treatment for a devastating full effect on the dance floor, that is a far cry from the proliferation of over-produced squeaky-clean software edits. These are basic, raw ideas thrown down quickly and capturing the energy on 1/4” tape before moving on to the next set of sounds.
Musically, it's as delightfully funky and uncomplicated as you'd expect, a mesh of disco tracks and heavy, effect laden, machine-funk. Essential Item !

the cosmologist cosmology - For Real (The Cosmologist 2014 Reconstructed Disco Trip)
Those who have been following the Cosmology series from its inception will no doubt be familiar with the ad hoc release schedule and will perhaps have grown accustomed to the diverse range of styles that their ep's encompass. Each one has trodden a different path in the pursuit of updating pivotal dancefloor memories and Cosmology volume four is the most ambitious reworking to date. The choice for this instalment's source material is a topical one as the influence here comes from Herman Sonny Blount, better known as the Free Jazz pioneer Sun Ra. The start point for this project was some snatched vocals and the saxophone from the 1972 opus, 'Space is the Place'. The sax riff was originally recorded in a Quintuple (an unusual 5/4 meter, which anyone familiar with Sun Ra will attest that his chaotic band leading makes the edit process nigh on impossible). Ever up for the challenge, Laurie somehow managed to cajole this into a more friendly 4/4 time signature, which forms the off kilter and strangely hypnotic bassline that underpins the track, leaving just the faintest whisper of the original intact. This mid tempo burner increases the intensity as it progresses, taking its time to wrap itself round you, into your mind and once this haunting melody gets you, you stay got. Left of field adventurers will have fun trying testing their crowd with this, and figuring out what to file it under. Flip it over and we return to more familiar soulful surroundings, albeit with a notably different sphere of influence and approach from the A side. This too retains that trademark Cosmologist other-world spaciness and crate diggers and modern soul aficionados will identify the lush, swirling disco gem from Flowers, a hard to come by rarity, entitled "For Real". Oozing soul from the opening bar, we have a track where very little reconstruction work was needed, so instead a nuanced yet restrained alteration is employed which retains all the class, and gives it a respectful re-calibration, opening it to a slightly wider range of DJ's to program. This was recorded during the Christmas break of 2013, but sat in the can for almost a year awaiting another track to pair it up with. Two wildly contrasting edits that will add something to the ongoing what is a remix/ edit debate, this double header will be the perfect storm to bring in the new-year and comes beautifully presented on 180g heavyweight vinyl, with black inner and a spined manila sleeve. Under the influence, and always under the radar…

This is volume one of a two volume set from edit master Gay Marvine aptly called Dance Floor Favorites These are some of his most sought after unreleased edits that are known for their strong reaction on the dance floor. They cause an instant heat. Includes his own rude jacking acid jam “Banji Girl Realness”, using lines from Paris is Burning conjuring the energy of the dance floor battles that would ensue during a Ken Collier set at Heaven. “Keepyourbodyworkin” delivers that filth your dance floor needs, while “Street Life” simply elevates your floor, walking on air. And nothing shines the light stronger than “Weekend”, always a peak moment at a party.
