Delano Smith returns to his Mixmode imprint with a two-tracker this June, coming in the shape of ‘They’re Here / Safe Place’.


Detroit’s Delano Smith has long been one of the most respected figures in raw, understated house and techno both of his home turf of Detroit and further afield across the globe, racking up releases for revered imprints such as Sushitech, Third Ear, Kolour Recordings’ Undertones and of course his own Mixmode Recordings where he returns to here for the labels thirteenth installment.


Leading on the package is ‘They’re Coming’, which embraces Delano’s signature groove-driven feel via slick, snaking stab sequences, rumbling sub bass tones and an infectious organic drum groove to keep things smoothly flowing throughout.


‘Safe Place’ follows on the flip-side, edging things into deeper territories via ethereal pad swells, a heavily swung percussive shuffle and bumpy bass hits whilst resonant bell chime like synth tones ebb and flow throughout the hypnotic groove.

Delano Smith follows his debut full length for Sushitech by gliding along the Berlin/Detroit axis back to his roots. The label boss's return to his own Mixmode sees him explore earthy house rather than the streamlined beaters that made Odyssey such a smash. In short, Precipice (MM11) is three hypnotic tracks of organic Motor City textures and rhythms. Mariana's Song builds with the strong fluid motion omnipresent in all Smith's productions. Mechanical drums drive a rugged analogue bass line, while flowing pads are layered to create a bright soundscape. The track is one to captivate the floor, building effortlessly to lock it into step. Set over a tight locomotive groove, Delano's talent for twisting up vocal samples creates a smokey, atmosphere on Celebration. Toughening the drums and easing in the bottom end, choice drum fills heighten the impact of the beautifully swung drums. The dusty beats on Dream Come True bounce with a wide eyed rawness. At once fragile and assertive, the soft chords are reclined above a gently insistent bass line to give the floor or the home stereo a comfortable ride. Able to focus the output of his own label on the kind of tracks that first saw him emerge, Delano has built a bridge to introduce new ears to the sound of his city. Fans of Delano's earlier work are in for a treat here but new followers will be sucked into hypnotic and considered world of his productions.

As part of the label¿s mission to champion Dutch talent, Voyage Direct has always promoted new, up and coming, and little-known producers. Boss Tom Trago's master plan includes building a family of artists, in part through helping unheralded local producers to fulfill their potential.

On the label¿s latest release, he continues that approach, serving up a debut 12" from a mysterious young producer known only as Darling. Those paying close attention to the wider Dutch house and techno scene may have spotted his recent rework of Awanto3's 'Star Butchers' on Dekmantel, in which the man or woman of mystery added some killer keys to the Amsterdam legends woozy, deep house original.

While that rework was undoubtedly superb, Jacob's Lead offers a truer reflection of the shadowy producers previously hidden talents. As debut EPs go, it¿s a bit of a
cracker.

The title track, in particular, is a beauty. Its restless, hypnotic rhythm tips a wink to classic Dutch techno of old, while the undulating, analogue electronics and swirling pads recall the far-sighted retro-futurism of vintage Motor City material. Throw in some of Darlings trademark spine-tingling keys and a deliciously loved-up breakdown, and you have a choice chunk of life-affirming techno.

On the flip, Darling heads towards deeper territory with the bubbling melodies, starburst electronics and saucer-eyed chords of 'Video'. Unashamedly positive in sound and intent, it sounds like the kind of track that will be cited as a classic in two decades time. Melodious and infectious, it casts Darling as the Netherlands¿ answer to Larry Heard.

The interstellar electronics are once more pushed to the fore on closer '80 Axes', where jaunty synth lines combine with soft bongo hits to create an instinctive rhythm, and intergalactic melodies sprint between the speakers. You can dance if you want to, but lying down is
very much encouraged.

It was December 2015 when Simon Weiss delivered his first EP for Voyage Direct, an impressively intergalactic affair full of supersonic synthesizer arpeggio lines, Motor City influences and robotic drum machine hits. Two years on, the experienced Dutch producer returns to action for the first time since, in the process delivering another quartet of starryeyed productions.

Through releases on Deepermotions, Rush Hour and Hometaping is Killing Music, Weiss has established a reputation for combining a deep understanding of dancefloor dynamics with a sci-fi inspired futurist aesthetic. Both of these complimentary traits are much in evidence on his second outing for Voyage Direct.

Weiss blasts off via “Brain Fever”, where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics thrust our hero skywards. Think of it as techno for funk-fuelled, Italo-disco loving astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is only just underway. This intergalactic funk blueprint is explored further on the deeper and more melodious “You Want A Cigarette”, where Weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant TB-303 lines, rush-inducing chords and clattering machine percussion.

On “Space Ghetto (Booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. With kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs and funkfuelled synth-bass to the fore, Weiss offers his own unique take on electrofunk. Pleasingly fuzzy and tightly wrapped in the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto-house, it’s a typically far-sighted and attractive proposition.

With just two minutes to go until his spacecraft touches down on alien territory, Weiss rounds things off via the melancholic chord progressions and heartfelt vocoder vocals of “Intro”, a beat-free excursion just tailor made for dramatic set openings and spine-tingling mix endings. He may be stepping into unknown territory, but it won’t be the last you’ll hear from Simon Weiss.
