mr. beatnick - "Church Street Blues" (Nebraska remix)
For the tenth release on Tief Music, the label enlist one of London's most respected and under-sung producers, Mr Beatnick. ‘Church Street Blues’ Follows on nicely from Beatnick’s first EP on the label; ‘Marshmallows’, which received support from the likes of Gerd Janson, Leon Vynehall, Midland, Massimilano Pagliara but to name a few. TIEF010 offers two emotive originals and a remix from Mister Saturday Night regular, Nebraska.
The title track is signature Beatnick. Crisp, perfectly swung percussion, plodding bass lines, off-kilter string samples and atmospheric pads.
Epic in parts, ‘Dawn Vapours’ sits nicely in line with the A1, stuttering drum machines, angelic pads and whirling effects. Nebraska is drafted in for the remix of ‘Church Street Blues’, chopping the string sample, adding congo loops with plenty of groove and heavy weight sub bass to the track, gearing it up nicely for club use.

Île Flottante is Mr. Beatnick´s 5th album, following 2023’s Joy In Variation (including the notorious cover of Love on a Real Train) and his well-received off-beat collaboration with London-based avant-garde agitator Richard Greenan – Coasty – this is his first contribution to the International Feel trademark. Probably best known for some big deep house revivalist tunes circa 2013 on the now dormant Don’t Be Afraid record label, Beatnick now converts that aural quality and dimensionality into the Balearic system.
Île Flottante takes its name from the tastiest French pudding of Mr. Beatnick’s childhood holidays. The name, also a jeux de mots - floating island - hinting at the album’s inspirations and sense of identity, as a danceable soundtrack to a fictional island. Explored with high intensity and over a yearlong process, the sounds of the well-worn, but never failing Balearic universes were a mind expanding influence. Think of genre staples like Software, Manuel Goettsching, Mark Barrott, Len Leise, Don Carlos, Gaussian Curve, Joan Bibiloni or Yasuaki Shimuzu.
„I spent a year listening to a lot of synthesized island music, and marveling at the many twinkling wonders of the Balearic musical universe. Struck by a sense of belonging that had often eluded me on my musical journey thus far, as the weirdo at the back of the club who had orbited many scenes for 20 years, but never felt like I fitted in, I found music that made me feel like I had come home. The songs that came out of this process are presented in the order that they were written - an open book of ocean hymns, honest and spoken from the heart.“
Île Flottante tries its very hardest to avoid being any one thing in particular. At one point, it is a gentle beach walk accompanied by polyrhythmic drum plod and flourishes of Guzheng. At another, the infamous James Yancey septuplet swing is repurposed against a marimba melody that wouldn’t be out of place in one of Link’s forest adventures.
Elsewhere, there are the bellows of distant whales, touches of Italian dream house and a splash of vintage madchester, all working to create a space that feels both familiar and loaded with well worn tropes, but with its own quirky sense of personality, facets which are often attributed to Mr. Beatnick’s holistic b-boy approach. This is his understanding of a Balearic (b-boy) stance. Just with a float instead of a freeze.

Tief bring together Axel Boman, Mark E and Mr Beatnick for volume 1 in their 'Dancing from..' various artist Ep's. Boman's 'We Are The Key's' heads the EP with trippy baselines, off kilter chords and rhythms. Mark E comes correct with the appropriately named 'Jungle UFO', an atmospheric jam suitable for a warm up. Tief mainstay Mr Beatnick delivers an acid tinged dance floor weapon with signature MPC programmed beats to round the EP off - essential!

Tief Music mainstays Sisterhood release their second EP for the label following up their hugely successful 'Call Me Ishmael' released back in 2013. Tunnels features three original tracks showing the London based duo's versatility and maturity as producers. The EP kicks off with 'Doublespeak', a hard-hitting peak time track, filled with arpeggiated synths and dubbed out FX. 'Tunnels' is deep and sparse, slowly building throughout its 7 minute run. Bicep reconstruct the title track, morphing it into a punchy, bassline focused roller with piercing atmospheric pads. 'Believe' closes the EP, a dreamy, sample based track utilizing beautiful floating chords to great effect.

The second Ep on Tief Music takes a slightly different approach incorporating african influences and sounds. Prophets of the south is the production project shared by Cape Town native 'Esa Mervin Granger' and Glasgow's 'Ooft'. Ooft, already an established producer in his own right releasing and remixing on labels such as 'Instruments Of Rapture' and 'Lets Play House' and Esa, one half of the 'Auntie Flo' live show, who is fast becoming recognized as an innovative solo beat maker producing 'african influenced' deep house and releasing on labels such as Burek and his own Rememory imprint met in Glasgow when Esa relocated there from Cape Town a few years back. Esa's African influences and talent for live percussion coupled with Ali Ooft's masterful production skills have come together to create some truly original pieces of music. A1 - The title track 'Ek Maak Julle Dance' means 'I make you dance' in Afrikaans, and it does exactly that. Its uses off beat chord staps along with hypnotic synth sounds to conjure up a ravey afro-house track well adapt for a peak time dance floor. B2 - Portable is originally from the same area of Cape Town as Esa which made him a fitting choice for remix duties. His mix of 'Ek Maak Julle Dance' offers an alternative mood to the original. Portable (aka Bodycode) employs his masterful production skills and programming to create a slightly off kilter but incredibly addictive and mesmerizing track that slowly progresses cleverly capturing the feeling and soul of the original. B1 - 'Boesman Lambada' is a beautifully deep, melodic, rhythmic track which combines lush synths with tuneful Marimba melodies and an eerie lo-fi vocal sample. B2 - 'Die Plain' is a slightly more up beat but equally atmospheric track harnessing a powerful driving bassline, sparing vocal samples and irresistible rhythms so typical of South African produced house music, a perfect example of two sounds coming together and meeting in the middle.
