Matt Nowak drops a trio of mesmerising techno tracks on his Zaijenroots imprint this June with appearances from Sebastian Klenk and Jerome Sydenham.
Matt Nowak inaugurated the Zaijenroots discography under his No Mad Ronin moniker alongside Jerome Sydenham in 2013, before reappearing for the second release with Quiet Daze (Ian Pooley) on remix duties. As the label returns for its third outing Nowak pairs up with German producer Sebastian Klenk whilst distinguished veteran Sydenham carves up a remix. 'Aleister' sees Nowak and Klenk create an acosmic track that initiates with a touch of funk before sullen synths make way for punchy SP-1200 beats and unsettling throbs. Sydenham provides a rendition of No Mad Ronin 'Chemical Planet' from Zaijenroots second release, featuring a perennial hook joined by intangible spoken samples and a subtle sub bass. Lastly 'Lenore' ties things together with a subterranean cut abundant with echoes and spacey atmospherics.

Berlin-based imprint Zaijenroots was launched in 2013, with a collaborative EP entitled ‘They Are Strong’ from Ibadan main man, Jerome Sydenham, and No Mad Ronin, who returns to the imprint for a solo endeavor here. Mat Ronin aka No Mad Ronin, is a relatively fresh name to most, although it’s safe the material he has released has been of the highest quality, having debuted on Ibadan in 2012 with the ‘I Adventure’ EP. Recent support has come from the likes of Neville Watson, Mr.G, Osunlade, Ben Sims and Delano Smith, again strikingly indicating the
underground appeal, and impressive production style of this budding producer. The original mix of title cut, ‘Chemical Planet’, kicks things off here, a raw, dubbed-out number, built around gritty shuffling drums, heavily delayed chord stabs, hypnotic bass tones and tension building atmospherics. Things evolve in such a state throughout the tracks eight-minute duration, with processed vocals thrown into the mix and subtle nuances in the key elements reating a blossoming dynamic. Following on is the Quiet Daze remix of ‘Chemical Planet’, Daze, better known as Ian Pooley, offers up a stunningly contrasting mix, opting for a more direct 4/4 feel to the drums, riding out the infectious groove, while stuttering synth lines, and swirling atmospherics flutter around the foundations, incredible work as expected from such a proficient producer.
Then last up to close the single, No Mad Ronin turns in ‘See The Jungle Within’, a fantastic closing piece for the EP, winding things down with an ethereal vibe, as soft, cosseting pads build a profound depth to the record, and progressively evolve as the tracks blossoms. Then weighty kicks and raw, organic percussion are thrown into the mix driving the energy and movement around the synthesized elements.

No Mad Ronin, an architecture graduate of Bauhaus Weimar, first met Jerome Sydenham in 2010 and instantly connected with the legendary US producer. Since then, they pair have collaborated, with Sydenham taking the German producer under his arm and ultimately releasing a collaborative 12” on Ibadan in 2012 entitled ‘I Adventure’. Since then, No Mad Ronin has collaborated with the Analogue Cops as Bratha – the fruits of which will appear on unmarked vinyl early 2013. The debut Zaijenroots takes in two tracks from No Mad Ronin and two collaborative ones from his sometime mentor, Jerome Sydenham. Both producer’s contributions sit in the landscape between late night hypnotic house music and techno and all four tracks are master classes in trippy restraint. A high quality and no-nonsense beginng for the Zaijenroots imprint, No Mad Ronin v Jerome Sydenham’s ‘They Are Strong’ is release late-April on 12” vinyl.
