The mysterious Usio project first showed its bewitching janus-face in 2013 with the release of Kuwa Huru, a star-striking collection of electronic blues for the dance floor that also constituted the first full-length album to appear on Studio Barnhus. Kuwa Jasiri is a follow-up and an appendix and something entirely new – these four tracks stem from intense rehearsals of Usio's emotive, energetic live show (coming soon, if you're lucky, to a dark basement/dewy forest floor near you). The breezing funk of opening track Gonna Make It, the freakish stomp of Planet Dust, Over The Andes in all its precipitous acid-jammin' glory and contemplative, elegant closing track Pamoja have all captivated us at Studio Barnhus. It's a beautiful night outside so we thought it might be time to let these birdies fly.

With a quiet intensity over the last 12 years, Strategy has proven himself to be an incredibly resourceful and rewarding musician in both group settings and as a solo artist. In the latter guise, this Portland producer/multi-instrumentalist (aka Paul Dickow) has released a prolific amount of excellent work for quality indie labels such as Kranky, Idle Hands, 100% Silk, Endless Flight, and Entr'acte, putting a cerebral yet sensual spin on dub, ambient, post rock, and house music.
For his Further Records debut, Noise Tape Self, Strategy delves ever deeper into his more ambient inclinations and experiments with tape loops. Most of the six tracks bear titles more suited for a library record, but Noise Tape Self lacks library music's faceless functionality; rather, it's an immersive soundtrack to stimulating one's imagination or losing one's bearings. Dickow says he became obsessed with making tape music in 2008, after tiring of using the computer as his main instrument. Fellow Portland producer/ingenious gear-tinkerer David Chandler (Solenoid) taught Dickow "how to make a tape loop that could be put inside a cassette tape. I got really into this, and got a 4 track, knowing this would allow me to have four synchronized loops per tape. I would then run each channel through a series of effects and 'perform' live mixes using the loops. I alternated between using source material of my own devising and using whatever source material happened to be on the cassettes I was hacking."
Noise Tape Self kicks off with "Awesome Piano," in which a fragment of a beautiful piano motif gets overwhelmed by a glorious vortex of static and distortion. We're immediately submerged in Strategy's alluring and disorienting world, where rupture and rapture converge. "Cassette Loop" is a gorgeous ambient piece with a lulling, aquatic quality that recalls such masters of uneasy listening as Rapoon, O Yuki Conjugate, and Aube. The self-descriptive "Ominous Lovely Piano" is a ghostly, microcosmic form of dub, an ultimate kind of headphone music of deep psychedelic interiority that's reminiscent of Paul Schütze's 1996 masterpiece, Apart. The hypnotic/amniotic ambience of "Lovely Loop" whispers of a peaceful eternity; this track could be an important step toward a new, improved strain of New Age. The album closes with "Rhen's Loop"; here's where the album really soars into the stratosphere and grows surreal wings. A five-dimensional headfuck of what sounds like analog-synth growls and whirs and desolate drones, "Rhen's Loop" is Doppler effected and disorienting, like a more somber take on Conrad Schnitzler's Ballet Statique. With Noise Tape Self, Strategy has found a way to build works of compelling, intimate grandeur with some of the humblest of sonic atoms. It's an alchemical wonder.

A long time friend of the label and an artist who needs no introduction, Recondite presents two unique techno narratives for his much anticipated first EP on Life and Death. Up first and straight out the gate like the turning of the great Boethian wheel, Think Twice turns over and on top of itself again, like the march of time and the fortunes of paupers and princes alike. An ever advancing urgent reminder of the transitory nature of the eternal now, it graces us with her beauty and leaves us with a shaking sensation deep in our bones. On the B side, Serak begins with a bellowing bass emitted like a series of holotropic breaths from belly of Stanislav Grof himself. A sequence of sounds sent like a fishing line to the depths of the psyche, it returns with a portentous melody that winds and wanders until exploding midway thru the piece in a burst of restrained emotion.

Jacek Sienkiewicz is back. “Drifting” is the artist's 5th full-length release and the second one on his Warsaw-based label Recognition since 1999. His records were played and strongly supported by
renowned artists such as Sven Väth and Richie Hawtin; legendary producers like Ricardo Villalobos, Uwe Schmidt and recently, Max Loderbauer collaborated with Jacek. “Drifting” takes its listener on a complex but still accessible journey to a state-of-the-art Techno territory where Carl Craig melodies coexist with stark minimalism of Robert Hood, but they serve only as entry points for further exploration. There is no doubt - Sienkiewicz knows all of his roots yet he
creates signature sound that results from his highly original approach to modern electronic music production. His new album can be seen as a personal diary that Sienkiewicz uses to invite all listeners, no matter what their listening preferences might be, for a deep and unique ride. Constant drift and dislocation creates imaginary landscapes of future unknown. It is a surprise gift in the times of market flood with predictable releases and tasteless hype.

His first EP on Bobby Donny opens with 'Dwayne Young', which puts the fun into funky with its deep vibe, filtered vocals and creative samplings. Slowing it down, 'Rio' is next, like a short but sweet interlude of off-kilter slow-mo experimentation. After a slew of acclaimed 12" EPs and a string of CD compilations and albums, Darkroom Dubs prepare to cut their first LP to wax, which comes from Portuguese newcomer Pedro Aguiar. Brimful of spectral intensity, Aguiar’s ‘Landscapes and Heartbreaks’ is an uninhibited package of field recordings and otherworldly tones that stay close to the aesthetic Darkroom Dubs fans hold dear and also inaugurate the label’s landmark step into the world of Long Play records. Just as the title suggests, the LP sonically explores the topography of an often- mournful setting and kicks off with the deeply cinematic ‘Western Digital’ before the cold, mechanical character of ‘The Ceremony’ layers bit-crushed textures with metallic, atonal drones. Hypnagogia then sets a rich and busy groove stuttering inside a cloudy cavern before ‘Black Palm’ spreads rich, undulating sweeps over sheets of liquid and delayed percussive knocks that are gently propelled by a low- passed thud. The lucent, minor key tones of ‘Redemption’ are then spread out before the ticking percussion of ‘Sacred Ritual’ patiently ferries the listener toward solace. ‘Helios’ then recalls the work of Keith Kenniff as rubbery, synthetic pops are contrasted against a soft melodic sheet before ‘Fadio Vadio’ rolls out a steady, chugging drum pattern and coarse, granular sweeps. ‘Orizaba’ and ‘Lost In You’ then inject some swooning synth tones, which work to round off a cohesive anthology of emotions that mark the first step for an extremely auspicious talent.

Poland's Father And Son Records And Tapes present first proper outing from label boss Maciek Sienkiewicz - three heavily edited tunes from different periods of popular music history. "The White Sheik" turns an obscure 80s Eastern Bloc groove into a full-on modern disco stormer, while "No Shit Sherlock" is 70s Brazilian fusion redux. Finally, the title track turns first few notes of one massive pop hit from '02 into hypnotic, entrancing journey in the vein of Terry Riley or Philip Glass. Fantastic cover art designed especially for this release by renowned contemporary artist Paulina Olowska.

Traxx, 18 months after Perseus Traxx brought us his first E.P, dedicated to four of the nine Muses of ancient Greece, Flight Recorder now brings you the second instalment dedicated to four more Muses, on "Goddesses Of Inspiration II" The feel is the same as before with jagged cutting tones jammed live then edited down. Heavy synths and scattered drums perform an ode characterising the appropriate Muses, as tangled wires and a pair of hands wrench the overload of inspiration they give from basic machines. Once again Perseus' release on Flight Recorder is a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

The second part in the Hudd Traxx 10th Anniversary 'Now & Then' compilation sees tracks from Luna City Express, Sek, Iz & Diz and Rick Wade. Berlin duo Luna City Express serve up a lush deep house groove that builds throughout the track, and will bring a smile to the faces of those who follow them on their beloved Moon Habour Recordings. Sek uses slick beats, trippy leads, a driving bassline and some 'Thug life' vocals to ensure this one has 'future classic' written all over it. Go back in time (to 2006 to be precise) on the 'Then' side to find Iz & Diz's 'Happy'. The words 'epic' & 'journey' are often misused in music but both can be mentioned about this track. It had devastating effect on first release and is set to do the same again nearly 10 years later. Rick Wade closes things out in fine style to fly the Detroit flag on an all Chicago / Detroit side.

As was to be expected from producers as floor-savvy as these two, the new offering bears all the hallmarks of a club favorite, incorporating the crisp rawness of early Kompakt stompers as well as the sophisticated sonics to be found in our current catalogue.The A-side of TIME IS RUNNING holds a particularly sure-footed entry in MICHAEL MAYER's track portfolio, with THE STICKLER being a welcome update on his more raucous output. The straightforward thump of this cut comes with sizzling percussion, siren-like synth stabs and throaty bass - a hearty techno romp that doesn't seem too interested in making prisoners. The flipside takes a similar line with THE BUDDY, a rock-solid floor jam from the hands of REINHARD VOIGT - it's a more than fitting contribution, enforcing the producer's madcap hypnotism with paranoid synth squelches and tenacious beats. If that's how old age sounds, we can't wait to hit that pension fund.

The Lost in Time series continues with the fourth release in Ralph Lawson’s new imprint. The label releases timeless music from a collective of maestros including Chez Damier, Tuccillo, Carl Finlow and Debukas. After the recent license of ‘Hold Over Me’ to No 19 Music the crew return to the mothership for ‘Lost on the Island’. A 3 track EP recorded between studios in Leeds, Paris and Ibiza from Lawson, Finlow and Tuccillo. The final mixing was carried out at Unblock studios in Ibiza after a series of excursions to very diverse places on the Island. ‘Nightcrawler' was inspired by a visit to DC10 while ‘Tide' was made for the Underground club and ‘I Don’t Know’ for the beaches of Salinas. Ralph Lawson is best known for his 20/20 Vision label and his live project 2020Soundsystem. Now concentrating on his house music roots with a heavy dub leaning. Fellow band-mate Fernando Pulichino has added bass to both the tracks on the flip side while Carl Finlow from Random Factor supplies intricate layers of classic synth sounds that remind us of something Larry Heard would play. Tuccillo, fresh from mixing his ‘Inside Out’ album on Get Physical is an analogue addict with a massive set up at Unblock HQ. On ‘Nightcrawler’ Tucci rocks the gear with rich, warm, massive sounding bass lines and rasping keyboards. A spattering of vocal hooks round off an EP that is strictly set to smash up the dance-floor while being a joy to listen to.

Next up on Optimo Music is the next wave of unique talent to emerge from Glasgow, once again recorded in the near-legendary Green Door studio. Four tracks of highly original, impossible to pigeonhole, dancefloor-not-dancefloor music. Junto Club are four men from Glasgow who have remained friends since they were teenagers through creating music they love. Whilst learning new instruments during a long winter, their sound was fashioned unexpectedly with sporadic melodies overlaid on taut drum machines, synthesizers and bass guitar. Many humble dance moves followed as the band began to carouse behind closed doors with their newly-found rhythm.

The Opilec Music label has once again cooked up a very special new project for its next EP: 'Dirty Talk' is a remake of the classic '80s Italo disco, proto-house tune by Klein & M.B.O. and has been produced by label boss I-Robots. The release comes with a Club Version made by I-Robots together with the Piatto Brothers, Alessandro & Davide, who bring a truly authentic Italo sound to the project with the use of the same vintage hardware utilised on the original (Roland SH1, Roland 808 etc). Davide Piatto was part of seminal act N.O.I.A., was the musician that provided the guitar & synth lines and all the electronic programming on the original 1982 version and was behind the Klein & M.B.O. productions along with Mario Boncaldo (r.i.p.) and Tony Carrasco. The original recording featured the vocals of Italian pop singer Rossana Casale and this vocal mix alongside the ever popular instrumental played a key part in the formation of Chicago fledgling House music sound. For this re-imaging I-Robots decided to update it and contacted cult disco soul singer, Donna McGhee of The Fatback Band, The Phreek and Universal Robot Band to provide a stunning new vocal. The club version is a dazzling bit of cosmic, lovably retro sounding disco-house with lush arps, sombre chords and seductive vocals from McGhee. Arranged and produced faithfully like the original, this is sure to once again grab the's world's attention. The Virgo Four original version (a digital only track) is a more modern sounding, deeper and stripped back house cut with driving rubbery drums and bouncy melodies, whilst the I-Robots Reconstruction is a deep and atmospheric, almost spiritual version, with whispered vocals, standout melodies and tons of colour in its grooves. This very special release is a collectors' edition that very much charts the earliest roots of Chicago house music. A remix Ep will follow soon with reworks by Gene Hunt and Radio Slave.

After 2014's set of acclaimed releases on L.I.E.S, Creme Organization and Rush Hour, Jorge Velez comes to Skudge White to drop a proper dose of relentless subterranean Techno. 4 tracks created with the adventurous dancefloor in mind. This is the sound of Velez at full command. "Les Méandres" leads the heavy charge as factory rhythms carry a sinister, echoed call-and-response synth pattern. Next "Blue Bottle", the heart of the 12" according to Velez, brings volcanic, hissing synths to an intense peak over hammering rhythms. "Tunnel" is the sound of "the most intense moment on the floor when it's just a blur of all sounds and lights and the pound of the drums" says Velez. Furious and abandoned yet with the floor firmly in view.

Vessel Records, as well as an outlet for Barnsley himself, will also release music from DJ W!ld, Burnski and Honesty in the coming months. ‘In The Woods' is one of Barnsley's strongest works to date and pairs a laid back groove with an infectious hook and indiscernible spoken word sample in 'Dinadon'. Using an understated rhythm and eerie atmospherics Hello?Repeat's Daze Maxim engineers a sullen vibe in his remix of 'Dinadon' before Barnsley teams up with Spanish producer Scan Mode in 'Colorado' for a hypnotic number incorporating an undulating lead synth and ethereal pads.

Lantern is Hud Mo's sophomore solo LP, having spent the past 6 years since his debut releasing hit singles and EPs and has been making his mark in the underground club scene for the last ten years.
