The third instalment of the Après vinyl series explores the indie disco dimensions of Future Classic's 2 year old Sunday afternoon session in Sydney. When we commissioned Gemma Smith to produce four artworks for the series this angular and intense piece sat well with the spiky Hot Chip-meets-Junior Boys disco punk funk of Melbourne 3 piece Clubfeet. It also worked with Adelaide's Sidwho?, another promising newcomer who's recent 12" on Cage & Aviary's The Walls Have Ears imprint got rave reviews from Horse Meat Disco, Mock & Toof, Tim Sweeney and Optimo to name a few. Millionaire is an early taster of the pop sensibilities of Sid's forthcoming solo album with Future Classic. Sid's also a member of the Modular signed live disco act The Swiss. Chad and Nathan took some time out from the Future Classic HQ to turn in a remix of Millionaire together with good friend Bryan O'Callaghan who also happens to be head chef at the Tilbury where Après is held. Bryan quickly became a firm friend of Future Classic after Mudd and Aeroplane were booked for sets at Après with Bryan seeking us out, immediately impressing us with his unparalleled knowledge of rare disco and groove. Last but definitely not least (since it made the A1) came Pink Frosts remix of Evening Star by another local Sydney band Todd Sparrow. After a heavy vinyl digging session at Redeye Records,the store's vinyl buyer Scott, handed Nathan a CDR and the call was made then and there and we had our third Après release - an intentionally all Australian installment!

New kid on the block Jacob Korn (Dresden, Germany y'all!) convinced sometime somewhere in Toronto with a hearty live set that took a route over hip hop, down tempo house and all kinds of funkiness until it peaked with the disco-house-craze "I Like The Sun (But not on LEDs)". Much to the delight of a present Running Back A&R. Hands were shook and it took only 2 and a half years until the test pressing arrived. Supplemented with the slow burning "Selene" that really gets you the second time around, prevents the typical mistakes current deep house likes to make (at least, we think so) and is the sun god's sister, the A-side is good to go. Flip the script to see Prins Thomas in a good temper, rolling out the red carpet with one of his tried and tested remixes. "I Like The Sun" piles up to 13 minutes of true Diskomiks glory including drums that go on forever (bonus beats, y'all!) and some eye-cue-markers for those of you who are deaf already. Well, swell!

Joining forces with the Minsk-based whiz kid Maxim Samos, who makes his second appearance on Theomatic, AN-2 delivers two mid-paced numbers that naturally blend the elements of funk, rock and disco. Urban nomad Tolga Fidan continues Vakant’s limited series VALT with a much sought-after track which has been around for a while. Fidan, just moved to Berlin a few weeks ago, says ‘So Long Paris’
in such unique style that that we hope he’ll never leave Berlin again. Vakant’s VALT series has been kicked off last year with Onur Özer and keeps on delivering music straight for the dancefloor.

Yore proudly adds Detroit's "Drivetrain" to the stable. Drivetrain's the nom de plume for Derrick Thompson, a DJ and producer who heads up Soiree Records International, a label with a strong soulful house focus, who has been around since Detroit's early days. With over 50 releases on his back, from Beatdown Sessions to numerous Remixes & Collaborations, you can tell that "Drivetrain" has a soft spot in his heart for the rich production values of '70s Philly soul associated with producers such as Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell. That kinship comes through loud and clear in the EP's second cut, "The Rain," when Thompson sweetens the tune's brisk rhythms with triangle, electric piano, alto sax, flute, acoustic bass and a gravelly "Make love (in the rain)" command that sounds like it's oozing from the lips of a tasty DJ.
"The Rain" is trumped by the A-side's "Angel (Serenity Mix)," which opens with a sinuous house thrust and then heats up with a tight, jacking groove that Thompson soulfully embellishes with synthesizer flourishes and a smooth vocal refrain of the song's title. The vibe is lush and soulful in the extreme, with the vocals alternating between a soft murmur and robust declamation while the percolating, dub-inflected house pulse pushes determinedly forward underneath. The EP ends with the title track, "Tragedy Park," which is closer in spirit to a stomping techno Raver that's had a smidgen of acid thrown in for extra flavour. Definitely a floor shaking Bomb!
