Kölsch - It Ends Where It Began (With Patrick Reilly)
I Talk To Water, the fifth album for Kompakt by Danish producer Kölsch, is the artist’s most personal statement yet. While all the trademarks that make his music so popular and powerful are still present – lush, melodic techno; swooping, trance-like figures; sensuous, shivery texturology – I Talk To Water is also a deep and intimate rapprochement with family and history, a beautiful, finely detailed document of loss and memory, and a tracing of the long, unbroken thread of grief that runs through our lives once we’ve lost those we loved. The emotional core of I Talk To Water, then, is a cache of recordings by Kölsch’s father, Patrick Reilly, who passed away in 2003 from brain cancer. With time rendered elastic by the pandemic and its associated lockdowns, its sudden, alienating shifts in everyday living, Kölsch found himself reflecting on his father’s passing and ongoing spiritual presence, thinking about how best to memorialise such a significant figure in his own life. Those recordings opened a gateway, of sorts, for Kölsch to move through – a way to bring past and present together and entwine them in a sensitive, poetic manner. Kölsch’s father was a musician – “touring in the sixties and seventies, in the Middle East especially, he was doing the whole hippy trail, playing guitar, and wrote some songs over the years,” he recalls. “But all in all, he decided to focus on family rather than pursue a [musical] career.” Reilly kept playing and writing music over the years, though Kölsch hadn’t listened to the material for some time: “I’d never had the guts to listen to it, because I just felt too fragile listening to his voice. It’s such a tough thing to go through.” During the pandemic, though, Kölsch listened through the fragmented body of work that his father had produced over the years. “I decided I’m gonna finally release my dad’s music twenty years after his passing,” he reflects. “This whole album is about the process of loss, and for me it’s been one of my main driving forces in my musical life, the whole emotional aspect of whatever I’ve done has been based in that feeling that he’s not there anymore.” Recordings of Reilly appear on three songs across I Talk To Water. His guitars drift pensively across “Grape”, offering a lush thread of melody that Kölsch wraps with clicking, driftwood rhythms and droning, melancholy bass. “Tell Me” is a lovely three-minute art song, a sadly beautiful reflection, minimally adorned with gentle keys and a muted pulse. And on the closing “It Ends Where It Began”, Kölsch lets his father’s acoustic guitar take centre stage for a lament that’s unexpectedly folksy, a guitar soli dream, which Reilly originally recorded in 1996. “He actually recorded it for my first album that never came out,” Kölsch reveals, “and I had it sitting around forever. That is purely him.” These three imagined collaborations between father and son are poised and delicate. But their relationship also marks the gorgeous music Kölsch has made across the rest of I Talk To Water, from the itchy yet lush “Pet Sound” (titled in tribute to one of Reilly’s favourite albums), the flickering synths and yearning vocal samples that slide through “Khenpo”, the ecstatic shuddering that marks “Only Get Better”, or “Implant”’s slow-motion pans and subtle reveals. There’s also the title song, where Kölsch is joined by guest Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), singing a mantra for internal reflection: “I talk to water / Searching for myself / Looking for answers / Oceans of you.” Farrell’s appearance brings another timbre, another spirit to the album, aligning neatly with his recent interest in electronic music. “He was completely taken by this idea of talking to water,” Kölsch says, thinking about the ways we collectively lean towards the natural world as a comfort and a listener, a guide through mourning, a way to map out the terrain of the heart. This mapping is something that Kölsch has proven remarkably adept at through the years; dance music for both body and mind, but also both for the here-and-now, and for the hereafter.

Kölsch - Environ
The sun is getting stronger in our northern hemisphere and the festival season is looming around the corner. This calls for a new Speicher release from someone who knows how to deliver joy in abundance: Kölsch. The first track’s name “Cold Air” might be somewhat misleading as it is a hell of a heater. Same goes for the heavy polka hitter “Environ” on which Rune is conjuring the vibes of his legendary Speicher debut from 2010, “Loreley”. As you’ve come to expect from the man with the hat: This is 100% primetime customer satisfaction with heart and soul.

KÖLSCH - Papageno 30 Years Later Feat. Waa Industry
Repress! The follow-up to KÖLSCH's much-acclaimed full-length "1977" • A sublime collection of melodic techno vignettes between musing introspection and explosive expression • 2xLP+DL CODE edition pressed on 180gr vinyl Revered Danish producer and live performer KÖLSCH follows his 2013 hit album "1977" (KOMPAKT 276 CD 107) with the new full-length "1983", again chaining up heroic techno tracks for a grandiose sonic journey to the vibrant heart of today's dance floor. Coupling contemporary production pizzaz with nostalgia-tinged soundscapes and sweeping melodies, this opus acts as both a skilfully composed portfolio of personal memories and a sublime collection of crowd-charming cuts - a modern classic in the making, coming from a master of his craft. Hot on the heels of SPEICHER 84 (KOMPAKT EXTRA 84), featuring club crackers DERDIEDAS and TWO BIRDS, the latest full-length offering from KÖLSCH is very much a travel album: "When I was a kid in 1983, we used to drive through Europe every summer on the way to the south of France", he explains. "A lot of my early music memories stem from these long travels, as we would listen to all my father's favorite records on the cassette deck. After getting a walkman, I would make up my own soundtrack for travelling, with early electro and hip hop creeping into my life. My father of course did not like it, and it never grace the official cassette deck of the car, obviously" These trips became a primary source of inspiration to a hungry young mind forced to sit on the backseat of a car for several days: "they were also journeys through the seasons. In Denmark, it would be spring time, so I could nearly see us driving through spring into the summer. The scenery would change, and so would the mood in the car." Informed by the symbolic quality of these slightly gauzy childhood memories, KÖLSCH's unique melange of emotional and functional elements works exceptionally well for the full-length format - a seamless transition of musing introspection and explosve expression, where catharsis never seems far away in dance-ready techno vignettes like MOONFACE, UNTERWEGS or PACER. From beatless opener and title track 1983 to the filigreed piano banger DIE ANDEREN or the bleep-infused synth-fest E45, each cut operates as its own little time capsule, storing bits and pieces of recollection and then magically transforming them into epic, beat-driven soundscapes. Confronted with other producers' input (and other memories), these traits find themselves extended in the most interesting ways - TALBOT, THE ROAD and CASSIOPEIA (also featured on KOMPAKT EXTRA 79) make excellent use of GREGOR SCHWELLENBACH's emotive orchestral flourishes, while BLOODLINE's lyrics come to life thanks to the distinct timbre of TOMAS HØFFDING of WHOMADEWHO fame. A new powerful take on an earlier collaboration, PAPAGENO 30 YEARS LATER not only rejoins WAA INDUSTRY on vocal duty, but also ends the album on a wonderfully elegiac, yet hopeful note - basically turning water into wine, as we've come to expect from KÖLSCH.

Kölsch - Pause
Repress! On his fourth album proper, Now Here No Where, Danish producer Kölsch (aka Rune Reilly Kölsch) is charting new terrain. Fans of his ‘years trilogy’ – 1977, 1983 and 1989, released on Kompakt over the past decade – were privy to a kind of sonic diary, an autobiography, tracking the artist’s early years through three albums of superior, meticulously rendered techno. Calling in collaborators where needed – most notably, the strings of Gregor Schwellenbach – there was still something deeply personal going down, not quite hermetic, but internally focused; the albums proved not only Kölsch’s mastery of his chosen form, but also his capacity to make techno personal, individual, and to trace histories of the self through music. But on Now Here No Where, Kölsch finds his feet firmly planted in the present. For Kölsch, this makes Nowhere Now Here “an album about life in the year 2020. A time defined by confusion, misinformation and environmental challenges. It is an emotional interpretation of personal and mental challenges, observations and personal growth.” Kölsch does this with music that effortlessly balances emotional heft with the dancefloor’s brimming desires. It’s a space that Kölsch has navigated for a while now – one of techno’s breakthrough acts, an in-demand DJ across the globe and a prolific and restlessly creative producer, he’s also Kompakt’s biggest-selling act – but Now Here No Where ratchets up the lushness, making for a delirious drift across twelve tracks that are at once perfectly poised and deeply trippy.

The year could not be complete without having a new release from the man behind the hat – KÖLSCH. He returns to SPEICHER following a phenomenal year of touring that took his DJing from the top of the Eifel Tower to the main stage of Tomorrowland. His IPSO imprint evolved into a global event and he released together with TIGA “HAL”, one of the biggest tracks of this summer. For SPEICHER 106, he takes an unexpected turn with EMOTICON. Found sounds take on new sonic form and the result is an unconventionally unique groove odyssey. LITTLE DEATH is anything but tragic or small. A choir chant explodes over top of an enchanting house beat which elevates over time to an almighty apex that we have learned to love and rely on from KÖLSCH.

1989 marks also Kölsch’s intensified deployment of real-life orchestral sounds and the conitunation of his extremely fruitful collab with Gregor Schwellenbach: after contributing to predecessor album “1983”, the Kompakt affiliate, composer and multi-instrumentalist now conducts the Heritage Orchestra for tracks KHAIRO, LIATH (featuring a violin solo by Kate Robinson) and SERJI, the latter of which Schwellenbach co-wrote and co-produced. The 24-person Heritage Orchstra consists of violins, violas, cellos and double basses, adding the sweeping drama and organic, richly layered textures that only real strings can produce – a deeply humane tone that is set with the album’s opening recording of the orchestra tuning its instruments (which incidentally also incorporates a voice recording from 1989 of Rune Reilly’s grandfather Ludwig). Seeing Kölsch’s propensity for vocalist cameos on his albums (Trœls Abrahamsen on “1977”, Tomas Høffding and Waa Industry on “1983”), one shouldn’t be surprised to find beautiful cut IN BOTTLES, which features vocals written and performed by Aurora Aksnes. After having produced such timeless tracks as “Loreley”, “Der Alte”, “DerDieDas” or “Cassiopeia”, expectations for new Kölsch material are expectably high – “there’s no doubting Kölsch’s mastery”, concluded Pitchfork when reviewing sophomore album “1983”, while Resident Advisor observed that “many electronic producers claim their albums have themes, but few can evoke a sense of faded nostalgia like Kölsch”, conjuring “moments of real magic”. 1989 certainly delivers on all of these fronts, engulfing the listener from the outset with its sonic coupling of classical composition and contemporary production – without sacrificing the impact on the dance floor: “despite its melancholy undercurrents”, Pitchfork finds Kölsch’s music to be looking “to dance for catharsis”. It’s how the Danish artist was able to inititate a head-turning run of global domination with his touring around the globe, remixes of Sven Väth, Flume and Coldplay, Ibiza commitments and his own BBC Radio 1 Residency radio show. Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac maybe put it simplest, noting “that man is sort of king when it comes to pianos and house music. He’s got a way of wrenching your emotions.”

Repress! KÖLSCH returns to SPEICHER / KOMPAKT EXTRA following the tremendous success of last year’s “Grey” (KOMPAKT EXTRA 93). A single that surprised everyone by catapulting the Danish artist into daytime UK radio. Alongside launching his own BBC1 residency, he continued to evolve as a DJ which has led to residencies launching in Cologne and Ibiza. KÖLSCH also launched his own record label IPSO which debuted a collaboration with MICHAEL MAYER with more to come... For his latest SPEICHER instalment, Rune revisits the bold, catchy minimalism of his earlier days: think of his INK AND NEEDLE alias or KÖLSCH’s very first SPEICHER / KOMPAKT EXTRA release (KOMPAKT EXTRA 68) and you’re not too far off the mark. PUSH is a raucous, sawtooth-y banger that quickly evolves into a high-flying space ride, thanks to its bursts of melody and a deep string break. On the flipside, GOODBYE creates a delightfully melancholic mood enhanced (and transcended) with organ-like synth textures, retro-futuristic bleeps and fragmented alien voices. Our SPEICHER series rapidly heads towards 100. Where it goes, only we know - so savour the flavour while it lasts.

Repress! The fifth SPEICHER release from Rune Reilly KÖLSCH comes after the face-twisting madness of "Loreley" (KOMPAKT EXTRA 68), the piano-driven melancholy of "Opa" (KOMPAKT EXTRA 70) or the bestselling chords from his collaboration with Gregor Schwellenbach (KOMPAKT EXTRA 79), somehow paying tribute to all of these within the confines of one admittedly massive two-tracker. Rune's first new original material in a while, these cuts follow much-acclaimed remix work for artists from the whole gamut of contemporary music, from high-profile pop stars like Coldplay to purveyors of fine house Monkey Safari or bass music aficionado Henry Krinkle.

Repress! Starting out in 2001 as a mere compilation series to tie up some loose ends from our regulars, SPEICHER has since become a guarantee for vanguard dance sounds from all over the planet, allowing KOMPAKT to invite and support electronic artists that comfortably inhabit both the delicate and the more deliberate ends of the electronic music spectrum. For SPEICHER 75, label staple and world-venerated club juggernaut KÖLSCH returns to the series with two expectedly masterful epics for the discerning floor. We’re quite used to the sight of even the most composed of crowds going strictly mental when Denmark’s Rune Reilly KÖLSCH drops another one of his anthemic cuts during a live performance – just think of timeless masterpieces like the hallucinogenic LORELEY (KOMPAKT EXTRA 68), the slightly nutty OPA (KOMPAKT EXTRA 70) or the sumptuous ALL THAT MATTERS (FMX/ATM 001): with literally every single one of his tracks being a wildly popular DJ choice, the man behind the chartbusters certainly knows how to create an impact. It’s those highly emotive yet unimpeachably simple leads we love so much with KÖLSCH, and we’re more than delighted to find them again in GOLDFISCH, a deliriously beautiful track full of shimmering pads and cinemascopic chords. A soaring trip to the eye of the storm, this will enchant hopers and mopers alike, making it the perfect primer for ZIG, the B-side’s majestic prime time mover. Kölsch - Der Alte
Repress! You thought it was a joke when we released a record named after Cologne's local beer, KÖLSCH. But you were wrong. Rune Riley Kölsch is not a joke. He's a tall Danish guy and it's quite likely that you've already heard some of his tracks out in a club. Maybe something from his amazing Ink & Needle series on his own Tattoo imprint or the track he's most known for: Calabria feat. Crystal Waters. After his impressive debut on KOMPAKT EXTRA "Loreley/Rheingold" he's back with another killer double header. "Opa" is one of the most unusual but yet amazingly effective techno tracks we've heard this year. It's steroid-driven funk with a heavily mental edge and powerful enough to lift the roof of any club. "Der Alte" pays tribute to Germany's long running TV series "The Old Man" with a rather juvenile sounding piano anthem that sits comfortably between balearic disco and Detroit techno. Prost, Mr Kölsch!

Kölsch - Silberpfeil
Repress! Kompakt welcomes a force to be reckoned on the fitting home of Speicher - Denmark's Rune Riley Kölsch. How appropriate that this talent was bestowed the (real) same name of the liquid gold that cascades from the taps of local watering holes in the city of Cologne? It's a matrimony made in heaven we say. His series of 12” releases under the guise of Ink & Needle on Tattoo Rec are cherished here at Kompakt. Tried and tested by Michael Mayer through his relentless touring throughout the summer, “Lorelei” has proven to have been a highlight. Though 4 to the floor, the spirit of Schaffel permeates Kölsch's utterly epic tune. This synth ride showers one's spirit and soul as refreshingly crisp and cool as the first gulp of Kölsch beer on a hot summer's day. The flipside “Silberpfeil” retains the simple playfulness that crests and builds with the single's partner track but straddles a deeper concoction of melody and harmony.
