This time the Mojuba sublabel brings us the second part of the “Detroit“-series by the label owner Don Williams himself. This one-sided record features two fine examples of music inspired by the city of d. The first one is a pumping peak time cut to hit the dancefloors and might become an essential tool for the ambitious DJ. The second track convinces in its very own character, providing a feeling that many will recognize from the early years of techno, when this music was connected to the listener more in a deep and emotional way than we know it from today!

Nivek Tsoy, the producer with the exotic sounding name, adequately first surfaced on the scene with a track on Dessous‘s recent extraordinairy compilation „Best Kept Secrets“. Even though this following exciting debut 3-tracker is bound to pull him out of anonymity immediately, personal infos about this remarkably talented guy is hard to come by. The only result of an extensive internet research is a rather unattented Myspace profile maintaining the enigmatic beatsmith‘s location is Usbekistan. Some smartass wordacrobats out there will fumble around with the name and argue that if you spell Nivek Tsoy backwards you come up with the name Kevin Yost: the veteran producer who made a big splash in the houseworld and secured legendary status with his very first outings for Guidance and especially I!-Records. Cuts like „One Starry Night“ single-handedly gave a new definiton to the term „jazz-house“ with it‘s fluid guitar licks, the exuberant drum programming and it‘s unique fusion of bandstand atmosphere and electronics. Granted Kevin Yost appears as one of the few friends in Tsoy‘s Myspace profile and the conservatory studied percussionist often ventured into less obviously jazz influenced terrain especially with the popular tribalistic series „Bongo Madness“, but the dark sizzling atmosphere with it‘s haunting futuristic sounds, the totally fresh combination of heavy oldschool house dubs and more recent minimalism just seems so different from the style he’s famous for. I gotta admit though that Tsoy sensibility for hard-hitting grooves and the density of programming and arrangement matches Yost‘s mastery. But frankly: which punter gives a damn about the true identity of the producer and all these nerdy bio details anyway if he gets a good bodyworkout, which every single one of these cuts will provide in fine style.

„If archetypal rock music claims „Satisfaction” then the rhythmachine requieres emotion” wrote Kodwo Eshun in his 1998 book „More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction.” Today, almost ten
years later, his theory is still correct, and it shows that his idea is explosive when the rhythmachine is programmed against the common sense. Steven Ford aka Bruno Pronsato knows all of this, because
he knows rock music and its creative dead end street. He knows because he played in several rock bands in his hometown of Seattle, trying time and again to play the same songs, and the same rhythms in new ways. But that's a long time ago. Now, more than five years later, he generates music via synthezisers and computers - emotional rhythms far beyond any kind of cliché. His new longplayer „Why can’t we be like us” embodies his old passion for playing the drums as well as his addiction to ones and zeros. Instead of creating streamlined minimal, he has more of an abstract sound on his mind - one that lives on a dark, organic and percussive note. Nothing really new, he has always been unpredictable and funky with an organic twist between the beats. His tracks often rely on devious turns, flickering sounds, warm basslines and some free riding vocals. They still do, but more importantly now, they are more musical, more space filling and above all, much more percussive. His intention here is to provide you with a long player - not a compilation of danceable clubtracks. He wants to tell a story and he does it with nine long, grooving compositions that are full of rhythms that twist around bubbling sounds that seem to launch out of his very own inner space: sometimes a piano melody is dancing in space, then an undefinable vibrancy chirps out of the background, and in the next moment some unheared buzzing sighs in time and space. The only real red threat you can feel deeply is a soulful climax towards the last track „Why Can’t We Be Like Us”. A story-arc that makes his album look like a book that releases emotions via rhythms from chapter to chapter. An experimenting, playful track-architecture that never reacts too apparent with our nervous systems. This album feels like a locigal progression from his E.P.’s for labels like Orac, Philpot, Hello?Repeat and his creative powers as one part of the duo Half Hawaii on Perlon. Musical suspense that processes feelings and soul through electronic vibrations. Everything sounds like Bruno Pronsato plays it himself on his machines and follows the „I am an instrument”-dictum of the spacy free jazzer sun ra. He still maintains his own inner sound and translates it into unheard arrangements. To quote Kwodo Eshun ones more: „Drum and electronica converge in a new space of rhythmatic and syncussion!”

Gavin Herlihy has long been one of dance music's most respected journalists and DJs, and with two acclaimed releases on Mood Music last year and more recently a brace of top-drawer remixes for UNKLE and Alexkid, he's fast becoming one of its hottest producers. Freshly relocated to Berlin, his debut 12" for Kindisch, 'Opium Haze', confirms his status as a skilled and innovative player on the house and techno scene. 'Opium Haze' is as heady and intoxicating as its title implies; an effortlessly psychedelic piece of music that's nonetheless firmly rooted on the dancefloor. It begins with a clicky, funked-up conga tattoo cloaked in disorienting effects which partly obscure the jazzy melody rising up from the mix's depths. Out of that sticky, dubby fug emerges an insistent, upward-tripping piano line and synthesized string stabs - together forming the kind of rave-ready hook that'll cause immediate damage in the club. Herlihy is superbly heavy on the edit, using an Eastern woodwind sample, disembodied voices and various percussive elements to deliver build after build, drop after explosive drop. 'Opium Haze' is a hugely satisfying piece of music, and a club anthem-in-waiting. 'Professional Exit' is a more stripped-down but no less accomplished affair, driven by a warm, rippling bassline and phased electronics. Before the percussion intesifies and interlocks, offsetting a sparse one-note synth line which hangs in the air, thickening it with understated drama. At once seductive and unsettling, experimental and club-oriented, 'Professional Exit' is indeed a professional end to a highly professional 12".

After „1000 Miles“ (pfr73) and „Let Me Dance“ (pfr82) our one and only Martin Landsky is back with another strong release: „Man High“. Honni soit qui mal y pense, „Man High“ doesn‘t intent to glamourise drug abuse. It‘s a tribute to Captain Joe Kittinger and the Man High project, a pre space-age military project that took men in balloons to the upper layers of the earth‘s atmosphere. Not only took the balloon Joe Kittinger to a record high, he also performed a sky dive from 75.000 ft. Imagine how yo feel, falling free from the stratosphere, close to unconciousness, rotating like mad with 22 g ... Martin‘s track „Man High“ captures a bit of that vibe with it‘s live played wildpitch-like oscilating synth modulations.
All three tracks on the EP are breathing Martin Landsky‘s special analogue sound treatments and a rocking old school vibe. „Cold Eyes 2“ on B1 builds a bit more subtle while „Rugged“ on B2 is an offbeat driven dancefloor smasher. Brilliant release!
