Its a slamming record. What more do you need to know? Ambivalent makes a strong Enemy after recent releases alongside the likes of Truncate, Silent Servant, and Skudge. The record is backed with a classy, stepping remix from Dustin Zahn and a floor filler from Amotik!

ambivalent - Whyou (Michael Mayer Mix)
AMBIVALENT is the monicker of DJ and producer Kevin McHugh: originally from the US, he has since found a new home base in Berlin where he produces trim and powerful techno for kinetic crowds. Accordingly, Ambivalent releases have found their way to classic dance imprints such as Ovum or Cocoon Recordings, and it’s with the latter that he recently found much acclaim for the „Daylights“ single, expanding a great run these past months with his La-4a analog project – now, he joins the Speicher ranks for SPEICHER 92: WHYOU is a rather muscular affair, boasting potent Moog riffs and a hungry TR 909. The flip side hosts a vigorous, hypnotic remix from Kompakt head MICHAEL MAYER – a personal hero of McHugh’s going back at least 15 years. Double headliner wax, with only the wheat and none of the chaff.

ambivalent - daylights
2
ambivalent - swung out
Tracklist: (A1) Daylights (B1) Swung Out Info: US born and meanwhile in Berlin residing Kevin McHugh aka Ambivalent presents his Cocoon Recordings single debut. Ambivalence seems to the be the musical direction here. "Daylights" is a sheer technomonster, musclepacked and full of dark detroit flavour but the used vocal samples and the harmonic synthstrings can't hide the magic touch of "Daylights". Although the massive techno bassline is the star of this track we are sure it will find its way into the sets of many house DJs, too. In contrast to that "Swung Out" appears way more like pure techno and cannot be filed as house at all. We are hypnotized by the shuffled rim shots and hi hats and Ambivalent drives this one straight through the dub universe. Techno is the destination and the dark vibe of "Swung Out" makes it a perfect after hour weapon.

ambivalent - phase doubt
2
ambivalent - selfed out
Tracklist: A1. Phase Doubt B1. Selfed Out Info: Having made his Ovum debut alongside Michael Penman on the hugly popular 'Shimmer' EP back in 2013, Berlin's US born resident Ambivalent returns to the label, flying solo, with his fantastic new double-header 'Phase Doubt'. A decade of making music has seen Ambivalent showcase his work on a envious list of labels from Minus to Mobilee, Cocoon to Clink and many more. Always looking to evolve, 2012 saw new faces and sounds from the American in the form of the housier Amber and the techno-tangent of LA-4A, both backed by the launch of his new vinyl imprint Valence. A busy, inspiring and impressively productive period. The Phase Doubt EP is his most recent creation and again sees Ambivalent avoid tiring techno templates to inspire with the latin rhythms and uplifting melodies of the title track. Dancing synth riffs, pulsing chords and scattered, rapid, snares all come together to create an exotic and heady opening number. On the flip, Selfed Out is built around its epic lead synth that both creates and dominates the outrageous groove and drive of the track. Stunning. .

Versatile 3 track techno ep on the new Valence label all with a knowing nod towards dancefloor hedonism. ''And'' is a rolling 909 clanger, while ''Or'' slips into dubby Berlin vibes. ''Not Yet'' takes a moody end-note on an expressive, melodic journey. Valance is exploring the depths of the dancefloor without drowning!

Ambivalent, - Witch Finder
2
Ambivalent, - Snowblind
Following his successful DJ mix _ground on digital-only label MINUS12, Ambivalent returns with more studio material on Minus. His Snowblind EP is a 2-track assertion of Minus' stripped-down techno bona-fides. The release follows last year's similarly driving, dancefloor-focused Plus 8 release Jackson, with a decidedly more dark tonality. A-side Snowblind lives up to its name in coldness and disorientation. With an insistent, simple hook, swirling delays and pounding drum hits, the track reaches an apex of energy, only to return to its plaintive hook and stripped, driving bass. The track has become an unmissable staple of Richie Hawtin's DJ sets, regularly played twice in a row, spiking the crowds' energy in his ENTER nights as well as massive international festival stages. B-side Witchfinder is loopier, but extends Snowblind's cold, driving analog power. With its heady melody, the track slips in and out of hypnotic repetition, varied by delays and short changes. Emulating some of Ambivalent's minimal heros like Hood and Mills, the track keeps its focus simple, but finds ample room to create drama with its bare essential parts. Aimed at the darker, energetic moments of techno sets, this EP anchors Ambivalent's focus on eerie melodies with his more recent higher-octane material.

Ambivalent, - Jackson
Although firmly entrenched in the Minus camp for years, this latest four track EP from US born, Berlin based Ambivalent marks a widening of his sonic remit. As such it arrives on the broader techno outpost that is Plus 8, and can be added to the likes of Clink for whom the man known as Kevin McHugh has also recorded. Carefully blending the soul of his American roots with a European propensity for machine music, Ambivalent’s ever evolving sonic blueprint here explores some of his most fluid grooves to date. ‘Jackson’ wastes no time in setting its stall out as a rolling tech cut swollen in a satisfying sub bass. As the track unfolds, though, it’s the spaces around the lolloping kicks and ticking hits that comes alive: alive with the endless crescendo of a hurried, muted organ sound that mesmerises as it cuts through the mix. With the arrival of some long-tailed and optimistic chords in the second half, it’s a masterfully economical use of colour that brings the whole thing alive with a subdued euphoria. Similar in construct is ‘Train to Brooklyn’, but this time the melody is much freer, falling up, down and side to side with an inebriated charm. Importantly, it adds a sonic looseness to the otherwise locomotive beats below. ‘Lear ’ – as the name suggests - is the more bullish sound that comes after too much inebriation: the beats boom and bash, hustling both each other and the echoing percussive line above. It’s tight, choppy stuff that would wake you from a moment of ennui with a loveable machismo. Striking a sweet spot between abstract digitalism and organic warmth once again is the digitalonly ‘Ghost Note’. With peppered hits and hats, claps and cow bells marking out the track’s cavernous sonic architecture, mysterious effects swoop in and out as de-tuned piano notes unfold with a devilish dynamism that both gives this track its name, and characterises the ‘floor facing EP overall.

This anticipated Clink release is produced by New York’s long time minimal techno connoisseur, Ambivalent aka Kevin McHugh. It is already being played and charted by the M-nus team, and was featured by Troy Pierce in the June issue of URB Magazine. Also making a strong appearance on this release is recording artist Hearthrob with his signature multifaceted sound. This EP, titled “Roomies”, shows the diversity of this fast rising minimal label by adding stripped down, dynamically percussive yet funky tracks to their archive of releases. This EP is a crate essential for minimal techno lovers this Fall.
