Sian, - Wear Your Scars Like Medals
The tenth release from Aus Music is a tasty little bomb from Sian to kick off the new year. Graham Goodwin aka Sian is a Dublin native raised gypsy style in southern Spain. As a self confessed workaholic-spaced-out-nature-junkie’, his commitment to the avant garde lifestyle has seen him grace decks at the nicest clubs and festivals in the world. He’s also released two albums and many singles on labels as diverse as Pokerflat, Dessous, Karmarouge, Dirtcrew and Einmaleins. His own label is Octopus, which we’ll be bringing you a great deal more of in 2008. Wear Your Scars Like Medals - has a very different vibe to Sian’s first outing on Aus, his lush, melodic ‘Apple Tree’. ‘Wear Your Scars..’ is an all together darker, more brooding affair. With no bass line to speak of and sirens and toms carrying the
majority of the melody this can be classed as a truly tribal excursion. Roland Appel Remix - Taking the pitch of Sian’s sirens as the melodic starting point Roland builds a hypnotic deep techno track that is reminiscent of early Planet E releases. A gradual percussive build that continually evolves until reaching an anthemic peak. Roland Appel is best known to us as a member of quality nu jazzers Fauna Flash and Trüby Trio. But in the past year he’s been releasing as Roland Appel on Berlin’s excellent Sonar Kollectiv label. 2007 say him release two sublime dark techno hits - the epic Dark Soldier and Unforgiven. Remember kids - an appel a day keeps the doctor away.

Dublin based Sian aka Graham Goodwin has already released his debut single „Sei“ (pfr64) on Poker Flat, remixed by labelhead Steve Bug himself. Now, he switches over to Dessous, Bug’s second imprint for House Music in its broadest sense, where Sian now delivers his debut single „Cinematique“, an exciting 3-track EP. The A-side „Cinematique“ starts with a dark bass and a special rave-line, which leads you through the whole track. Banging claps and sharp hihats makes this track a good choice for ecstatic moments on the dancefloor. The B-side boasts „Praymantis“, a track reminiscent of old 808 State tracks, but stripped down to modern and soulful acid house. The second track on the B-sdie is „Domina“ which rounds up this versatile EP and has this special oldschool house feeling of releases on HiBias or from Don Carlos from the beginning of the 90s. A smart and relaxed journey from club’s peak time to smart afterhour sessions.

Sian (aka Dublin based Graham Goodwin) is another fresh, new member of the Poker Flat family. He is into putting the cart before the horse in regards of starting to produce a melody and then putting the beats together. Unusual, but effective as you can hear on „Sei“, what is, by the way, a type of whale, according to Graham, a marine biology freak. This release also features one of Steve Bug's rare remixes! The mood is relaxed but non-lethargic. This old school deep house feeling plus the modern techy additions make this track not only a perfect set opener or closer but also a peak time smoother. Lively synths, a lovely simple beat construct and a good portion of hysteric sunrise atmosphere - that’s it. To ace it up, Poker Flat head Steve Bug adds one of his rare remixes. As atmospheric and beautifully moody as the original, but with more of a funky, dancefloor groove. An exquisite delay on the warm chords, a deeper more determined groove, funky slinky percussive arrangement, plus the unique Steve Bug spice result in a killer remix. This one will stick in your mind for a while..
