Tonis Pipe Since 2004 Chris Wood has been working as a successful producer and remixer for labels including Souvenir, Below, Kindisch, MurMur, be_chosen or levelNONzero and in 2009 he started working with his long-time friend, fellow producer and co-owner of Freebase Records in Frankfurt, Meat (Carsten Schuchmann). Coming just a short time after the release of his collated singles collection, Retrospective, the first track on this new 12" from Chris Wood & Meat comes courtesy of deep house don, Mr. G. His remix provides a sparse take on the original 'Cock Robin,' jacking straight ahead into a hard-hitting house rhythm, complete with finger-clicks and vocal stabs. A definite dance-floor roller. On the flip, the duo have provided a brand new cut, 'Tony's Pipe,' which rattles with drilling percussion and soaks itself in a modulating, acid-tinged synth line, all built around emerging, muffled vocal samples.

Souvenir is proud to present its 44th EP from a duo of Frankfurt's favourite sons, Chris Wood and Carsten 'Meat' Schuchmann. Both Chris and Carsten have come up through Frankfurt's music scene, Chris with his long time residency at the infamous Monza club and Carsten having started the city's premier record shop Freebase, still going strong 18 years later. Trained as a studio engineer, Chris cut his chops under the wise wings of Pascal FEOS and joined forces with Meat, who held residencies at Cocoon and Robert Johnson. Last year they dropped the mighty 'Triple S' on Souvenir, which destroyed dance floors as far afield as Sao Paolo to Ibiza. For this release they offer up another wild percussive workout in the form of the title track, something a little more syncopated on the humorously titled 'Dub Your Step' and a bonus track with an infectiously familiar little melody, not to forget a reimagining of the delirious A-side from the head honchos themselves, Tiefschwarz. 'JR Juniors' itself brings a distinct jungle-era drum palette, rough snares and claps hammering away while a chopped vocal raves it up, the slower house tempo doing little to lessen the frantic stabbing synthline's effect. The brothers Schwarz smooth things over, bring funkier, tribal drums, reducing the vocal to a reverberating echo that ducks and weaves around your headspace. The third track, is like a little woodpecker has just landed straight in your eardrum, pecking out an insistent, wriggling bassline with an off-kilter half-step beat to accompany the track's name. The digital only, is a pile of children's building blocks whose constituent parts slowly come together, with an extremely familiar little melody underpinning the solid drum work.

Zeitlos, a german word meaning 'timeless' is one way to describe Chris Wood & Meat's new EP, Triple S. This is House of a different flavor, pulling influences from freestyle jazz and funk. We find ourselves late in the night. We enter Triple S; a smoky cool atmosphere, relaxed and ready. Light percussion leads us into the back, where a lone wandering bass line takes the stage. The simmer of hi hats and trample of toms usher in the kicks. Chugging along, a single jazz flute, and sassy women punch through the fog. The strings rise and the bass sinks into the cellar. Downplayed with style and elegance, Triple S is the perfect track for half past midnight, opening the gates and pouring your body on to the dancefloor. Moving along, we come to 'The Girl With The Blue'. We jump right into the beat, as saxaphones hum in the distance in anticipation of the hot and sultry build. The Perfect warm up to a great set on any hot dancefloor. Next up we Chris and Meat Go East. Taking us back to the days when disco ruled the world, and funk was king. Light chords from an electric piano accompanied by shakers get things moving in the right direction. The bass steps in and chords rise. 'The place I want to go' is where we end up, a bubbling mix of piano and funky guitar licks. The track holds itself well against Triple S and The Girl With The Blue as the feel-good, happy end to the EP. The Digital exclusive Dub version of Triple S gets down to business, stepping the energy up and hitting the bass where it counts; while maintaining all what makes Triple S what is is. Chris Woods & Meat open the doors of funk, and dive into jazz to prove themselves once again in this release, which is sure to make a splash wherever, and whenever played.
